The thin film hardness estimation by nanoindentation is influenced by substrate beyond a critical relative indentation depth(CRID). In this study we developed a methodology to identify the CRID in amorphous carbon film. Three types of amorphous carbon film deposited on silicon have been studied. The nanoindentation tests were carried out applying a 0.1–10 mN load range on a Berkovich diamond tip, leading to penetration depth-to-film thickness ratios of 8–100%. The work regained during unloading(We) and the work performed during loading(Wt) was estimated for each indentation. The trend of unload-to-load ratio(We/Wt) data as a function of depth has been studied. We/Wtdepth profiles showed a sigmoid trend and the data were fitted by means of a Hill sigmoid equation. Using Hill sigmoid fit and a simple analytical method it is possible to estimate CRID of carbon based films.

The Liberian economy has experienced one of the worst declines with an estimated 90%decline in its gross domestic product（GDP）between the years 1989 to *** level of GDP decline is said to be one of the worst declines in *** decline of the economy came about as a result of mismanagement and civil strife that ravished the country’s *** aim of this study was to analyze the impact of foreign direct investment on the economic growth of Liberia covering the period 1980 to *** ARDL Modeling or"bound" testing approach was employed to investigate the linkages among the multivariate time series in the Liberian economy and draw up optimal policy *** this study,the estimated ARDL using the real gross domestic product（RGDP）as a proxy for economic growth shows that there is a negative long-run relationship between FDI and economic *** long-run Granger Causality Test empirically portrays that the coefficients of RGDP and FDI are negatively signed and statistically significant in all Vector error correction models（VECMs）which means that,there is causality between the variables of interest in the *** findings revealed that FDI is negatively related to economic *** means until the right economic policies and measures are taken to positively impact the growth variables as lay out by the Solow model plus other variables especially those used in this research,foreign direct investment remains of less significance to the growth of the Liberian economy and that it should not be seen as a remedy to revitalize the Liberian economy as is widely believed to be by policy makers and international partners.

Through KNCV/TB CARE 1 Project, the first set of 9 Xpert MTB/RIF machines were installed in Nigeria in 2011 with additional 6 machines in 2012 for improved diagnosis of TB and DR-TB in the country. The study assessed the performance of the Xpert MTB/RIF machines over the period of 2011-2012 in various locations and its impact on TB diagnosis among PLHIV （people living with HIV）. A total of 3,725 sputa samples were tested by Xpert MTB/RIF machines. Of these, a total of 463 （12.4%） sputa samples were from PLHIV AFB smears negative suspects. Three hundred and fifty seven （77.0%） sputa samples tested MTB negative, 78 （17.0%） tested MTB positive while 28 （6.0%） samples had error results. This indicated an additional diagnostic yield of about 17.0% over AFB test. Of those that were MTB positives, 5 （6.4%） had resistance to rifampicin. The study shows the need to expand Xpert MTB/RIF services to ART centres as well as to other states of the country to aid early detection and diagnosis of TB in PLHIV patients and MTB Rifampicin resistance cases as well as prevent transmission or resistance strains of YB.

Exploring the Nexus between Climate Hazards and Conflict in Lamu County: Implications for Community Adaptation Action Plans

This paper investigated the complex relationship between climate change and security in Lamu County, with focus on community perceptions, vulnerabilities, and adaptation strategies. The study utilized a participatory approach involving Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) to gather insights from diverse community members. Results revealed a growing recognition of climate change as a significant factor amplifying security risks, including resource-based conflicts, food and water insecurity, pest and disease outbreaks, and rising sea levels. The analysis of historical climate data indicated shifts in rainfall patterns and rising temperatures, exacerbating these hazards. Furthermore, it underscores the need to mainstream climate change actions across various sectors for sustainable development and human security. Lamu County in Kenya faces a myriad of security challenges stemming from climate change, with the community perceiving droughts, pests, diseases, and conflicts as prominent hazards. These climatic impacts have led to crop failures, livestock losses, water scarcity, property damage, displacement, and instability. Local adaptation strategies have shown varying degrees of effectiveness, highlighting the need for community-specific and sustainable solutions. The study identified local adaptation strategies and emphasized the importance of early warning systems, informed decision-making, and mainstreaming climate change actions across sectors to enhance human security and sustainable development. However, it also acknowledges limitations in community participation and suggests future research avenues to ensure the inclusion of marginalized voices in such studies.

The high premium placed on the organically produced cocoa in the international market coupled with its health and environmental benefits necessitated recent focus on research into the use of agricultural wastes as source of nutrients in cocoa (T. cacao) production. The study was carried out at the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN), Ibadan (Lat. 7°25'N Long. 3°25'E), South-western, Nigeria during the 2010/2011 seedling production season to compare the effects of NPK (20:10:10) fertilizer, Cocoa Pod Husk and Oil Palm Bunch Ash (CPHA and OPA) on the seedling growth and dry matter yield of cocoa (T. cacao). Equivalent amount of different rates of two nutrients sources CPHA and OPA were applied one month after planting at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 t/ha respectively, recommended rate of 10 kg·N of the conventional NPK (20:10:10). Fertilizer was used as reference fertilizer. Results indicated that all the fertilizer materials positively and significantly (p > 0.05) increased the growth parameters considered. The influence of the ash materials irrespective of sources on the nutrient uptake, dry matter yield of cocoa seedlings and shoot to root ratio were either higher than or had a comparable results with the reference fertilizer (NPK 20:10:10). CPHA and OPA applied at a rate of 4 t/ha significantly (p > 0.05) increased the plant height and root length of cocoa seedlings respectively relative to control and in—organic fertilizer and could therefore be recommended for the prospective and existing Nigerian cocoa farmers for raising their seedlings in the nursery before transplanting to the field.

The purpose of our study was to compare interfractional bony setup variations in pelvic anatomy with two immobilization devices, the patient-specific Vac-Lok and the generic Dual Leg Positioner system (both Civco Medical Solutions, Kalona, IA), for bilateral proton radiotherapy of the prostate. Two groups of 10 patients were studied. Computed tomography (CT) was performed three times a week, yielding 233 CT image sets for the vacuum system group and 252 for the other group. The translational shifts of the pelvic bone and prostate and rotation of the upper femurs of the femoral heads with respect to the simulation CT images were analyzed. Along the anterior-posterior and lateral axes, mean and systematic translational variations of the pelvic bone and prostate, relative to skin fiducials, were significantly lower in the Vac-Lok group (all p 0.01) than in the Dual Leg Positioner group. Abduction of the upper femur, the dominant rotation, had random rotational variations of 1.9° and 2.0° and systematic rotations of 3.1° and 2.9° for the vacuum and generic system groups, respectively. Femoral abduction was highly correlated with anterior prostate displacement for both femurs in both groups (p tion introduced during simulation CT, particularly with the generic immobilization system. High degrees of femoral rotation may introduce prostate translation and distal misalignment of lateral proton beams with the prostate.
