Meyer-Neldel Rule in Plasma Polythiophene Thin Films

In polymers, the electronic activation energy depends on the fragmentation, crosslinking, dopants, moisture and in general on the structure-environment interaction. This has a special importance in plasma polymers because fragmentation and crosslinking are usually higher than in other polymers. In this work, DC electrical conductivity of polythiophene thin films prepared by plasma (pPTh) was studied using the Meyer-Neldel (MN) rule to calculate the characteristic MN energy and temperature as a function of moisture and metallic dopants. The experimental data for pPTh synthesized in different conditions indicated that EM = 32 meV and TM = 373 K, suggesting a thermally activated conduction mechanism;however, in polymer-metal matrices with metal concentration higher than the percolation threshold, the conduction mechanism is different causing that the MN rule was only partially fulfilled. The congruence of the experimental data with the multiexcitation entropy model is discussed.

Bioinformatic Analysis of Potential Pathogenicity Effectors of <i>Candidatus</i>Liberibacter asiaticus, Causal Agent of Citrus Huanglongbing

Huanglongbing (HLB) or citrus greening is currently the most important citrus disease, caused by the bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas). The impossibility of isolating it causes understanding its pathogenic mechanisms to be a complicated task. Recent studies identified 16 proteins with the signal peptide needed to be secreted in the plant and cause the disease. The present study aims to perform a bioinformatic analysis of these proteins with the function prediction approach by gene ontology (GO) and the detection of conserved domains. It was observed that of the 16 proteins analyzed not all are found in different infective strains reported in the literature. The GO analysis allowed us to relate different proteins with the biological process of energy and pathogenic activity, especially CLIBASIA_03315 and CLIBASIA_05115, respectively. The domain analysis allowed the observation of a β-CA domain, tentatively related to the damage caused to the chloroplast and a PAAR domain associated with the T6SS secretory system. Our results provide information on the possible function of potential pathogenicity effectors in CLas.

Alginate is a widely used polymer matrix in food industry since it allows formation of spherical, soft, and strong membranes adequate for encapsulation of a large amount of products, including food. The flow rate of alginate solutions and the permeability of the capsules were evaluated within an acidic-low acidic pH range and different alginate concentrations. In solutions adjusted at different pH （3.0 to 7.0） with concentrations of alginate of 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2% w/v, flow rates at 20 ℃ were 6.95 to 10.00, 4.54-5.35, and 2.60-2.80 mL sl, respectively. Permeability of the capsules was evaluated in terms of the diffusion of H＋ions （expressed as pH） and soluble solids （~Brix）. Meanwhile both diffusions were minor at 4.0 〈 pH 〈 7.0 and were significantly superior at more acidic pH （P 〈 0.05）, alginate concentration did not present significant effect. Yellow, purple, and red juices from Stenocereus spp. fruits （pitayas） were encapsulated using 1.0% of alginate and stored with isotonic solution （3 mL g^-1） at 4 ℃ in the dark. The capsules were spherical with diameter between 4.59 and 470 mm, weight from 82.60 to 97.50 rag, and volume of 0.075-0.098 mL. Pigment （total betalains content） diffusion reached equilibrium at 24 h of storage, at which point retentions of total betalains in the yellow, purple, and red capsules were 87.79, 96.13, and 85.13%, respectively. Also, changes in the color of the capsules were observed during storage.

Judgment Formation towards Health Risk Behaviors Concerning Obesity: An Integration Information Theory Approach

A sample of 80 secondary students was required to take an information integration theory study to explore judgment formation toward health risk behavior regarding obesity. Here, twelve social scenarios containing a simulated actor were implemented (vignettes) having in mind a three factor experimental factor design (diet, weight and physical activity). Subjects had to read each vignette and provide an answer by marking ten points anchored scale to provide judgment on actors’ possible health risk outcome. Results showed that study participants valuated diet as the most relevant factor, followed by the description of weight and finally followed by the factor of physical activity. They impose systematic thinking to integrate different sources of information provided by factor manipulation in the vignettes by using a cognitive summative rule. Implications of this study result to clinical intervention in obesity as well as for theoretical considerations of cognitive models of health risk behavior are discussed in the present article.

Effects of Estradiol on 5-HTsA and 5-HT2c Receptor Immunolabeling in Rat Hippocampus

Steroid hormones participate in the modulation of serotonergic transmission, including the regulation of synthetic and metabolic enzyme production, as well as receptor and transporter activity. The changes of 5-HT5A and 5-HT2c immunolabeling induced by steroids in the hippocampus ofovariectomized rats were studied in this work. Densitometric analysis in rat hippocampi were carried out for adjacent brain coronal immunolabeled sections after treatment with subcutaneous injections of vehicle, estradiol, progesterone or the combination of both steroids in ovariectomized rats. Exposure to estradiol and the combination of estradiol and progesterone significantly reduced the 5-HT5A-like immunosignal in the CA 1 region while progesterone did not induce changes. On the other hand, exposure to the combination of estradiol and progesterone or estradiol alone increased the 5-HT2c immunosignal in the same region. These results indicate that estradiol is involved in the discrete regulation of serotonin receptors 5-HT5A and 5-HT2c in rat hippocampus.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are usually suitable candidates for the development of drug delivery devices. Sol-gel chemistry represents an easy method to obtain porous silica nanoparticles. Mesoporous silica nanomaterials have been widely used for drug delivery purposes. In this work we synthesized silica based materials using two molar alkoxide:water ratios 1:4 and 1:8, incorporating paracetamol to develop a nano-sized matrix for controlled release purposes. The samples exhibited different values for surface area, porosity, particle size and distinct punctual defects. Infrared and UV-visible spectroscopic studies were carried out to demonstrate the effect of water concentration and the adequate incorporation of paracetamol molecules. Nitrogen adsorption characterization was realized and the estimated BET surface values were from 532 to 825 m2/g. Kinetic analysis of drug release profiles was performed using the hyperbola model. Transmission electron micrographs showed that all the materials formed aggregates of small particles with size between 10 - 60 nm. Mesoporous SiO2 materials were proved to be a suitable system for controlled release of paracetamol.

Low serum levels of ghrelin are associated with gallstone disease

AIM： To explore the role of ghrelin in gallstone disease. METHODS： We carried out a cross-sectional study in 150 subjects, 38 with gallstones （cases） and 112 controls. We also did a real-time PCR-RT study in twenty gallbladder samples each. Body mass index （BNI）, serum insulin, ghrelin, and serum lipids were measured. Logistic regression analyses （univariate and multivariate） were conducted to estimate the probability of gallstone disease associated with serum ghrelin concentrations. RESULTS： Cases were statistically different from controls in gender distribution （P = 0.01）, age （53 vs 44 yr, P = 0.002）, BNI （28 vs 25; P = 0.004）, and glucose （5.26 vs 4.98 mmol/L; P = 0.05）. The prevalence of ghrelin serum levels above the third tercile was lower in subjects without metabolic syndrome （P 〈 0.05）. In a multivariate model, we found a protective effect, when ghrelin values were higher than the median value （OR = 0.27, 95%CI 0.09-0.82, P = 0.02）. Twenty （20%） gallbladder specimens expressed ghrelin mRNA. CONCLUSION： Serum ghrelin concentrations are associated with a protective effect of GD.

Quantity and Quality of Water in the River LermamLake Chapala Watershed, Mexico

Water overexploitation in the Lerma-Chapala Watershed, located in central Mexico, is linked to the development of a strong federal hydrocracy with the mission to capture as much water as possible in order to satisfy social and political demands through the construction of dams and irrigation systems. The reduction in freshwater quantity and the deterioration of water quality are the outcome of industrial inflows, agriculture and urban untreated wastewater. This study has been leaded to determine hydrological, water quality, seed bioassays and the lake fisheries＇ decreases throughout its historical tendencies （1980-2004） in relation to changes in water levels. Hydrological data and water samples for chemical analysis, inorganic nutrients and seed bioassay, were taken from 10 sites alongside the river and two sites from Lake Chapala in years 2005 and 2009, the WQINsF （National Sanitation Foundation Water Quality Index） was estimated. The dissolved oxygen along the river was from anoxic （0.4） to 7 mg/L and the lake had 6.75 mg/L to 7.36 mg/L; the river had highest nutrients variations, Ntot and Ptot 1 mg/L to 〉 10 mg/L. The lake had few physicochemical variations and the lowest nutrient concentrations; WQINsF （water quality index） in the river-lake system showed very bad-bad quality and contamination in river, bad quality-light contamination in lake. Seed bioassays showed inhibition of root elongation and declining fisheries when low water levels were presented. Chapala Lake had better physicochemical and limnological conditions because of the wind action and water column mixing; in contrast the river, high hidrological variations caused by water administration in middle basin.

High blood pressure is the main risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, it affects many people worldwide and is a public health problem. This study explored the acute and chronic actions of a mixture of turmeric (95% curcumin) plus black pepper (95% piperine) extracts, in the blood pressure pattern in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) along they age. For the acute study male adult (4 - 7 months old) SHR and their control Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) were used. A single oral dose of the mixture of turmeric/black pepper extracts (200 mg/2mg, respectively) suspension was administered. Tail-cuff was used to determine blood pressure during 180 min. For the chronic study, young (1-month-old) male SHR and their control WKY rats were fed with standard chow, or standard chow combined with cocoa, or combined with cocoa plus the mixture of turmeric/black pepper extracts;tail-cuff was used to determine blood pressure once a week, along 12 weeks. In a second chronic assay adult (5 months old) male SHR and their control WKY rats were fed with standard chow, or standard chow combined with cocoa, or combined with cocoa plus the mixture of turmeric/black pepper extracts;tail-cuff was used to determine blood pressure once a week, along 12 weeks. In all three studies, a decrease in systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure was observed, being higher in SHR and negligible in WKY rats. The mixture of turmeric/black pepper extracts showed antihypertensive actions in SHR rats with no effect on WKY rats. The mixture delayed the onset of hypertension in young SHR rats.
