This paper attempts to resolve the reported contradiction in the literature about the characteristics of high-performance/cost-effective fenestration of residential buildings,particularly in hot *** considered issues are the window glazing property(ten commercial glazing types),facade orientation(four main orientations),window-to-wall ratio(WWR)(0.2–0.8),and solar shading overhangs and side-fins(nine shading conditions).The results of the simulated runs reveal that the glazing quality has a superior effect over the other fenestration parameters and controls their effect on the energy consumption of residential ***,using low-performance windows on buildings yields larger effects of WWR,facade orientation,and solar shading than high-performance *** the WWR increases from 0.2 to 0.8,the building energy consumption using the low-performance window increases 6.46 times than that using the highperformance *** best facade orientation is changed from north to south according to the glazing *** addition,the solar shading need is correlated as a function of a window-glazing property and *** cost analysis shows that the high-performance windows without solar shading are cost-effective as they have the largest net present cost compared to lowperformance windows with or without solar ***,replacing low-performance windows with high-performance ones,in an existing residential building,saves about 12.7 MWh of electricity and 11.05 tons of CO_(2) annually.

This study investigates the potential of enhancing oil recovery from a Middle East heavy oil field via hot water injection followed by injection of a chemical surfactant and/or a biosurfactant produced by a Bacillus subtilis strain which was isolated from oil-contaminated *** results reveal that the biosurfactant and the chemical surfactant reduced the residual oil saturation after a hot water ***,it was found that the performance of the biosurfactant increased by mixing it with the chemical *** is expected that the structure of the biosurfactant used in this study was changed when mixed with the chemical surfactant as a probable synergetic effect of biosurfactant-chemical surfactants was observed on enhancing oil recovery,when used as a mixture,rather than *** work proved that it is more feasible to inject the biosurfactant as a blend with the chemical surfactant,at the tertiary recovery *** might be attributed to the fact that in the secondary mode,improvement of the macroscopic sweep efficiency is important,whereas in the tertiary recovery mode,the microscopic sweep efficiency matters mainly and it is improved by the biosurfactantchemical surfactant *** as evidenced by this study,the biosurfactant worked better than the chemical surfactant in reducing the residual heavy oil saturation after a hot water flood.

This study proposes an intelligent data analysis model for finding optimal patterns in human activities on the basis of biometric features obtained from four sensors installed on smartphone and smartwatch devices. The proposed model, referred to as Scheduling Activities of smartphone and smartwatch based on Optimal Pattern Model(SA-OPM), consists of four main stages. The first stage relates to the collection of data from four sensors in real time(i.e., two smartphone sensors called accelerometer and gyroscope and two smartwatch sensors of the same name).The second stage involves the preprocessing of the data by converting them into graphs. As graphs are difficult to deal with directly, a deterministic selection algorithm is proposed as a new method to find the optimal root to split the graphs into multiple subgraphs. The third stage entails determining the number of samples related to each subgraph by using the optimization technique called the lion optimization algorithm. The final stage involves the generation of patterns from the optimal subgraph by using the association pattern algorithm called g Span. The pattern finder based on Forward-Backward Rules(FBR) generates the optimal patterns and thus aids humans in organizing their activities. Results indicate that the proposed SA-OPM model generates robust and authentic patterns of human activities.

Several available mechanistic-empirical pavement design methods fail to include predictive model for permanent deformation(PD)of unbound granular materials(UGMs),which make these methods more *** addition,there are limited regression models capable of predicting the PD under multistress levels,and these models have regression limitations and generally fail to cover the complexity of UGM *** researches are focused on using new methods of computational intelligence systems to address the problems,such as artificial neural network(ANN).In this context,we aim to develop an artificial neural model to predict the PD of UGMs exposed to repeated *** repeated load triaxial tests(RLTTs)were conducted on base and subbase materials locally available in Victoria,Australia to investigate the PD properties of the tested materials and to prepare the database of the neural *** were prepared over different moisture contents and gradations to cover a wide testing *** ANN model consists of one input layer with five neurons,one hidden layer with twelve neurons,and one output layer with one *** five inputs were the number of load cycles,deviatoric stress,moisture content,coefficient of uniformity,and coefficient of *** sensitivity analysis showed that the most important indicator that impacts PD is the number of load cycles with influence factor of 41%.It shows that the ANN method is rapid and efficient to predict the PD,which could be implemented in the Austroads pavement design method.

In this study, titania nanotubes （TNTs） were prepared by hydrothermal method with the aim to compare the properties of these one-dimensional tubular nanostructures＇ reinforced nanocomposites with the carbon and halloysite nanotubes＇（CNTs and HNTs, respectively） reinforced nanocomposites. Low density polyethylene （LDPE） was used as the matrix material. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized and compared by means of their morphological, mechanical and thermal properties. SEM results showed enhanced interracial interaction and better dispersion of TNTs and HNTs into LDPE with the incorporation of a MAPE compatibilizer, however, these interactions seem to be absent between CNTs and LDPE, and the CNTs remained agglomerated. Contact angle measurements revealed that CNT filled nanocomposites are more hydrophilic than HNT composites, and less than TNT composites. CNTs provided better tensile strength and Young＇s modulus than HNT and TNT nanocomposites, a 42% increase in tensile strength and Young＇s modulus is achieved compared to LDPE. Tear strength improvement was noticed in the TNT composites with a value of 35.4 N. mm -1, compared to CNT composites with a value of 25.5 *** 1 -s- 1. all the prepared nanocomposites are more thermally stable than neat LDPE and the best improvement in thermal stability was observed for CNT reinforced nanocomposites. CNTs depicted the best improvement in tensile and thermal properties and the MAPE compatibilizer effective- ness regarding morphological, mechanical and thermal properties was only observed for TNT and HNT systems.

Background The relative resolution of the nuclear track detector to distinguish between the different energies of alpha particles has been *** This done by modeling the nuclear track of LR-115 detector,the revealed tracks have been classified and their diameters were measured with numerical densities replication depending on the fitting by resonance Breit–Wigner formula,the optimum etching time was chose with the least standard deviation of the spectral distribution of tracks diameter according to the average track diameter(D).Purpose The spectral distribution width(ΔD)was determined at Full Width at Half Maxima(FWHM).The results and comparisons showed the resonance Breit–Wigner formula it had a preference in improving the relative resolution of the detector as compared with the Gaussian and Wblfit *** turns out the application of image analysis software by MATLAB technique leads to give fast and accurate nuclear track parameters for *** The digitally counting system is high accurate and infinite speed in completing the *** results obtained with respect to the measurement of 238U concentration in the standard samples,showed the superiority of digitally system in the determination of these concentration in comparison with manually system,with average error rate no exceeding of 4.175%.

Hazard maps are essential tools to aid decision makers in land-use planning,sustainable infrastructure development,and emergency *** the availability of historical data,there has been no attempt to produce hazard maps for *** cooperation with the World Bank,this study investigated the natural and anthropogenic hazards that affect *** objective was to assess the hazards that face Kuwait and map the hazards of most *** maps depicting the spatial distribution of hazard-prone areas are discussed in this *** assessment maps were generated using multiple datasets and techniques,including meteorological data,satellite imagery,and *** profiling identified a total of 25 hazards,of which five“priority”hazards were explored in detail:(1)surface water flooding;(2)dust storms and sand encroachment;(3)drought;(4)air pollution;and(5)oil *** results of this study can aid decision makers in targeting the hazards of most *** developed maps are valuable tools for emergency response and hazard mitigation.

This paper aims to assess the effect of dry band location of contaminated porcelain insulators under various flashover voltages due to *** locations of dry bands are proposed to be tested under different severity of contamination artificially produce using salt deposit density(SDD)sprayed on an *** tests of polluted insulators under proposed scenarios have been *** flashover voltage of clean insulators has been identified as a reference value to analyze the effect of contamination distribution and its *** dry band dimension has been taken into consideration in experimental *** flashover voltage has been predicted using an artificial neural network(ANN)technique based on the laboratory test *** ANN approach is constructed with five input data(geometry the insulator and parameters of contamination)and flashover voltage as the output of the *** indicated that the pollution distribution based on the proposed scenario has a significant influence on the flashover voltage *** of the ANN model reveals that the relative error values between the experimental results and the prediction appeared to be within 5%.This indicates the significant efficiency of the ANN technique in predicting the flashover voltage insulator under test.

Hydrological and economic feasibility of mitigating a stressed coastal aquifer using managed aquifer recharge: a case study of Jamma aquifer, Oman

This study explored the hydrological and economic feasibility of managed aquifer recharge(MAR) using tertiary treated wastewater(TWW) to mitigate salinity in the coastal aquifer of Jamma, Oman. A steady-state groundwater flow and transport model, using MODFLOW software, was developed and calibrated. Different managerial scenarios were simulated and the results reveal that the Jamma aquifer will be further deteriorated in the next 20 a if it remains unmanaged. The groundwater table will decline further by more than 3 m on average; and the iso-concentration salinity line of 1500 mg/L will advance 2.7 km inland, which will severely affect the farming activities in the area. However, MAR using TWW when integrated with the management of groundwater abstraction(e.g., using modern irrigation systems to reduce the abstraction rate) becomes hydrologically feasible to augment the aquifer storage and control seawater intrusion, and hence improves the farming activities. The results indicate that:(1) injecting TWW in the vicinity of irrigation wells(Scenario A2);(2) investing in smart water meters and online control of pumping from the wells to reduce the abstraction rate by 25%(Scenario B); and(3) a combination of both(Scenario B2) are feasible scenarios with positive net present values. Recharge in upstream areas is found not economically feasible because of the very high investment cost of the installation of pipes to transport the TWW over a distance of 12.5 km. Because of securing funds are challenging, Scenario B would be the best option and the second-best option is Scenario A2. Scenario B2 has the lowest net benefit investment ratio and is very attractive because it entails integrated demand and supply management of groundwater. It is required to reduce pumping and to invest in injecting TWW to improve groundwater quality in the vicinity of irrigation wells and to form a hydrological barrier to control seawater intrusion in the long run.
