Plant ontogenetic changes in vein and stomatal traits and their relationship with economic traits in leaves of three Mediterranean oaks

Aims We compared vein and stomatal traits of seedlings and adults of three Mediterranean Quercus *** work suggests that gas-exchange rates tend to be higher at the seedling stage than in *** objective was to determine whether vein and stomatal traits vary throughout whole-plant ontogeny in parallel with the changes in gas-exchange *** addressed the following alternative hypotheses:hypothesis 1—seedlings show higher vein and stomatal densities than adults;and hypothesis 2—seedlings have lower investments in vascular tissues to reduce construction *** Ten specimens from each growth stage were randomly sampled for each species in a location in central-western *** measured mean stomatal and vein traits(size and number of stomata per unit of leaf area,vein density,vein volume,vein to epidermis distance),leaf mass per area and lamina *** Findings Minor vein density and vein volume per area increased with tree age,which seems inconsistent with the ontogenetic trends in gas-exchange *** discrepancy is in support of our hypothesis 2,and it suggests that,at the seedling stage,reducing investments in vascular tissues in benefit of maximizing growth rates is a *** interveinal distances in seedlings were compensated by smaller vein to epidermis *** thin leaves of the seedlings may thus constitute as a necessary trait for achieving shorter path length distances for the transport of water to evaporation sites without the need for a strong investment in costly vascular tissues.

This research clearly outlines the supply chain in a process of evolution and digital transformation,where the collaboration of its members is concentrated,having technological tools to help chain *** analyze the advantages that this transformation produces in the supply chain,as well as its different processes,this study has a systemic perspective that involves precise elements for organizational development,such as the different phases of each process,operations,logistics,and *** must be borne in mind that any strategy in industrial companies grants the automation of procedures in the supply chain and determines a product in any phase of production,making the organization more sensitive to any variation in *** methodology included a bibliographic and non-experimental review that allows a descriptive and analytical study,which details the various characteristics of the fact that is being investigated,collecting information through interviews with different people who are involved with industrial *** the results obtained,it was identified that digital transformation helps reduce costs and generates greater *** conclusion,it was obtained that the digital supply chain helps in each of the phases of the processes,these are supervised by devices that help to have fast and effective information.

Road-Spine versus Road-Tube： Roads as Space Generators

Arteries devoted to sustain streams of users, resources and debris, are a foremost factor and pre-condition of the development of urban areas and of the transformation of landscapes. Roadscapes reflect outcomes related to super urbanization tendencies. Often conceived as isolated tubes, roads cut and obscure form, structure, biotic and abiotic factors of sites, urban fabrics and spaces. A broad vision of landscape is a basis for reconceiving roads. The concept of road-spine emerges： the road is conceived as the basis of a bundle of routes, nodes, surfaces, poles and tiles, devised to frame and shape a mosaic of open spaces, crops, farms, stores, basins and service areas. The road-spine entails the idea of a permeable infrastructure devised to integrate diverse functions： from serving various forms of motion, by ordering an isotropic grid of routes, to framing a porous urbanscape; from disposing surfaces meant to preserve biocenosis and biotopes, to favoring osmosis amid land uses. It also prefigures a distribution of land uses dependent on site vocations, and a mosaic of scenarios open to encounter, evasion, rest, amusement, participation, and to spontaneous practices of space.

Effect of Tantalum Doping on TiO<sub>2</sub>Nanotube Arrays for Water-Splitting

This work is intended to define a new possible methodology for TiO2 doping through the use of electrochemical deposition of tantalum directly on the titanium nanotubes obtained by a previous galvanostatic anodization treatment in an ethylene glycol solution. This method does not seem to cause any influence on the nanotube structure, showing final products with news and interesting features with respect to the unmodified sample. Together with a decrease in the band gap and flat band potential of the TiO2 nanotubes, the tantalum doped specimen reports an increase of the photo conversion efficiency under UV light.

Pesticide Residue Control in the Years 1983-1985

Levels of organochlorinated, organophosphate, dithiocarbamic, benzimidazolic, and phthalimidic compounds, as well as some other pesticide residues obtained from Regional Laboratories in the years 1983-1985, were assembled and presented as a part of a study aimed at evaluating food contamination. Approximately 2000 samples of vegetables, fruits, cereals, and food of animal origin were analyzed by local laboratories during the years 1983, 1984, and 1985. Samples were randomly obtained from the market, at production levels, or sometimes at custom sites. Approximately 10,000 determinations of single compounds or classes of compounds were carried out. The analytical results are presented and compared with the Italian maximum residue limits. In the majority of the samples analyzed, either there were no residues or the residues were below the permitted level for the specific pesticide in each commodity. High levels of residues were present in a few cases, mainly with respect to some fungicides in fruits and vegetables and chlorinated compounds in some animal products. (c)1989 Academic Press, Inc.

Grafting effects on bioactive compounds,chemical and agronomic traits of‘Corbarino’tomato grown under greenhouse healthy conditions

In tomatoes,grafting onto resistant rootstocks represents an effective strategy to control several soil-borne diseases that reduce crop profitability,especially for landraceswith little or no resistance tomultiple pathogens/*** this study,the high-value‘Corbarino’tomato landrace was grafted onto seven commercial Solanum interspecific rootstocks to evaluate graft compatibility,yield performance,and qualitative characteristics under greenhouse healthy *** rootstocks were themost effective in improving fruit yield without negatively affecting the carpometric,technological,and health-related traits of the traditional tomato.‘Dinafort’rootstock increased fresh and dry yield,harvest index,and fruit/clusters,while mean fruit weight,shape index,total and soluble solid content,simple sugars,organic acids,flavonoids,ascorbic acid,and trans-lycopene content did not differ with respect to the ungrafted‘Corbarino’.‘Interpro’rootstock also showed promising results for the overall yield and quality traits,although it reduced the trans-lycopene content in the fruit.‘Silex’rootstock showed the highest harvest index as result of decreased *** fruit quality induced by‘Silex’was satisfactory and high levels of simple sugars,flavonoids,ascorbic acid,and trans-lycopene were also ***,graft success,especially for‘Dinafort’and‘Silex’,needs to be improved by investigating more suitable methods for seedling production,grafting,acclimatization,etc.

Genetic variants involved in gallstone formation and capsaicin metabolism,and the risk of gallbladder cancer in Chilean women

AIM:To determine the effects of genetic variants associated with gallstone formation and capsaicin (a pungent component of chili pepper) metabolism on the risk of gallbladder cancer (GBC).METHODS: A total of 57 patients with GBC, 119 patients with gallstones, and 70 controls were enrolled in this study. DNA was extracted from their blood or paraffi n block sample using standard commercial kits. The statuses of the genetic variants were assayed using Taqman SNP Genotyping Assays or Custom Taqman SNP Genotyping ***:The non-ancestral T/T genotype of apolipoprotein B rs693 polymorphism was associated with a decreased risk of GBC (OR:0.14,95% CI:0.03-0.63). The T/T genotype of cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) rs708272 polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of GBC (OR:5.04,95% CI:1.43-17.8).CONCLUSION: Genetic variants involved in gallstone formation such as the apolipoprotein B rs693 and CETP rs 708272 polymorphisms may be related to the risk of developing GBC in Chilean women.

We report graphene films composed mostly of one or two layers of graphene grown by controlled carbon precipitation on the surface of polycrystalline Ni thin films during atmospheric chemical vapor deposition(CVD).Controlling both the methane concentration during CVD and the substrate cooling rate during graphene growth can signifi cantly improve the thickness *** a result,one-or two-layer graphene regions occupy up to 87%of the fi lm *** layer coverage accounts for 5%11%of the overall fi *** regions expand across multiple grain boundaries of the underlying polycrystalline Ni fi *** number density of sites with multilayer graphene/graphite(>2 layers)is reduced as the cooling rate *** fi lms can also be transferred to other substrates and their sizes are only limited by the sizes of the Ni fi lm and the CVD ***,we demonstrate the formation of fi lms as large as 1 in^(2).These fi ndings represent an important step towards the fabrication of large-scale high-quality graphene samples.

The agriculture in Biskra,southeastern Algeria,is based on traditional practices and characterized by small irrigated *** the last decades,the increasing demand in water as well as the scarcity of rainfall has forced many farmers to use groundwater of low quality to maintain the profitability of their ***,this practice seems to be the main harmful factor for soil quality in the region since it is responsible for the salinization of the irrigated *** to assess the impact of this phenomenon,the soils of the irrigated perimeter of El Ghrous-a representative rural community located in the west of Biskra-have been analyzed.A set of 82 soil samples was collected from top and subsoil(0-15 and15-35 cm respectively),on which the following physicochemical analyzes were performed:Ca^(2+),Mg^(2+),K^(+),Na^(+),Cl^(-),SO_(4)^(2-),HCO_(3)^(-),NO_(3)^(-),pH,electrical conductivity(EC)and sodium adsorption ratio.A Principal Component Analysis was performed to individuate the geochemical processes that influenced significantly the evolution of soil salinity and its *** results showed a calcium sulfate(CaSO_(4))facies with a high risk of salinity and a low to medium risk of *** calcite residual alkalinity and generalized residual alkalinity decreased as the solutions became more *** of the samples were oversaturated in carbonate minerals(aragonite,calcite,and dolomite)and under saturated in evaporitic minerals(anhydrite,gypsum,and halite).Finally,two multiple linear regressions(using cations and anions as independent variables)have been proposed to quantify soil *** equations,with an accuracy of 85%,can represent a time and money-saving tool for managers and farmers to estimate the EC,in comparison to the traditional estimation methods.

A prospective analysis of factors that influence weight loss in patients undergoing radiotherapy

Malnutrition occurs frequently in patients with ***,a variety of nutritional and tumorrelated factors must be taken into account in these *** this relationship,we aimed to prospectively evaluate the risk factors that influence weight loss in patients undergoing radiotherapy with oral nutritional supplementation and dietetic *** loss of 74 patients during radiotherapy and 1 month after treatment was *** such as age,gender,tumor location,tumor stage,Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status(ECOG PS)score,and the use of chemotherapy were analyzed to evaluate their influence on weight *** patients underwent oral nutritional supplementation and dietetic ***-six(65.7%)patients lost weight,with a mean weight loss of(4.73±3.91)kg,during *** 1 month after treatment,45(66.2%)patients lost weight,presenting a mean weight loss of(4.96±4.04)kg,corresponding to a(6.84±5.24)%net reduction from their baseline *** and neck cancer patients had a mean weight loss of(3.25±5.30)kg,whereas the remaining patients had a mean weight loss of(0.64±2.39)kg(P=0.028)during *** the multivariate analysis,the head and neck tumor location(P=0.005),use of chemotherapy(P=0.011),and ECOG PS score of 2-3(P=0.026)were considered independent risk *** status and parameters,such as tumor location(especially the head and neck),the use of chemotherapy,and the ECOG PS score,should be evaluated before radiotherapy because these factors can influence weight loss during radiotherapy and 1 month after treatment.
