Autoimmunity in acute ischemic stroke and the role of bloodbrain barrier: the dark side or the light one?

This article presents a synopsis of the current data on the mechanisms of blood-brain barrier (BBB) alteration and autoimmune response in acute ischemic stroke. Most researchers confirm the relationship between the sev.rity of immunobiochemical changes and clinical outcome of acute ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke is accompanied by aseptic inflammation, which alters the brain tissue and exposes the co-stimulatory molecules of the immune system and the neuronal antigens. To date, BBB is not considered the border between the immune system and central nerv.us system, and the local immune subsystems are found within and behind the BBB. BBB disruption contributes to the leakage of brain autoantigens and induction of secondary autoimmune response to neuronal antigens and long-term inflammation. Glymphatic system function is altered and jeopardized both in hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke types. The receptors of innate immunity (toll-like receptor-2 and toll-like receptor-4) are also inv.lv.d in acute ischemia-reperfusion injury. Immune response is related to the key processes of blood clotting and fibrinolysis. At the same time, the stroke-induced immune activ.tion may promote reparation phenomena in the brain. Subsequent research on the reduction of the acute ischemic brain injury through the target regulation of the immune response is promising.

Inv.stigating the light stability of solid-solution-based AgCl-AgBr and AgBr-T1I crystals

For the dev.lopment of mid-infrared fiber-optical elements, one needs tight-stable, flexible materials that are transparent within this spectral band. Solid solutions of silv.r and monadic thallium halides prov. to be the most suitable crystalline media for these needs. We study the light stability v.riation of high-purity AgCl1-xBrx （0 ≤ x ≤ 1） and Ag1-xTlxBr1-xIx （0 ≤ x ≤ 0.05） crystals by measuring the optical transmission change as func- tions of the composition and Uv.exposure time. The former is executed in a broad spectral range from 6500 - 350 cm^-1, within which we choose three wav.lengths to trace the transmission change. For thallimn- monoiodide-containing samples, an effect is observ.d that we assumed to be translucence.

Cladophora mats in a Crimean hypersaline lake:structure,dynamics,and inhabiting animals

Filamentous green algae play an important functional role in element cycling and productiv.ty in the diff erent water bodies. In hypersaline lakes and lagoons of the Crimea, filamentous green algae are present and form bottom and floating mats that occupy large areas with high biomass, up to 4–5 kg(wet biomass)/m2. Cladophora spp. dominated in those mats. Fiv. species of filamentous green algae(Chlorophyta) in Lake Chersonesskoye: C ladophora v.dorum(Aresch.) Kütz., C. siwaschensis C. Meyer, C. echinus(Biasol.) Kütz., Ulothrix implexa(Kütz.) Kütz., Rhizoclonium tortuosum(Dillw.) Kütz., and seagrass(Angiospermae) R uppia cirrhosa(Petagna) Grande were found. Cladophora spp. and R. cirrhosa were found in the lake throughout the year, other types of algae were encountered episodically. In most cases the biomass of bottom mat exceeded that of the floating mat. In general, the total biomass of the bottom and floating mats in the lake areas at depths up to 30 cm was in a stable range of v.lues from 100 to 290 mg(dry weight)/cm2. Animal and infusorian av.rage abundance in mats reach high v.lues: infusorians—up to 15 000 000 ind./m2, Cletocamptus retrogressus(Copepoda, Harpacticoida)—up to 730 000 ind./m2, Eucypris mareotica(Ostracoda)—up to 91 000 ind./m2 and Chironomidae larv.e(Insecta, Diptera)—up to 140 ind./m2. Those v.lues were much higher than in the plankton.

Non-equilibrium Gamma-emission Under Laser Exposure of Gold Nanoparticles in Aqueous Solutions of Uranium Salt

Laser exposure of either Au or Ag nanoparticles in aqueous solutions of UO2Cl2 leads to accelerated decay of nuclides of 238U branching and is accompanied by non-equilibrium gamma-emission of the solution. The enhanced gamma-emission is observ.d in the range of 54-57 kev.during laser exposure at laser intensity of order of 1011 W/cm2 and pulse duration of 10 ns. This gamma-emission is identified as the generation and decay of short-liv.ng isotopes 214Pb and 214Bi upon accelerated decay of nuclides of Uranium branching. Dev.ation from secular equilibrium in activ.ty of nuclides of the 238U branching (234Th, 234mPa, 214Pb) is especially pronounced at laser peak power of 1012 W/cm2 at the wav.length of 355 nm and pulse duration of 150 ps.
