Efficiency in hydrocarbon degradation and biosurfactant production by Joostella sp.A8 when grown in pure culture and consortia

Joostella strains are emerging candidates for biosurfactant production. Here such ability was analyzed for Joostella strain A8 in comparison with Alcanivorax strain A53 and Pseudomonas strain A6, all previously isolated from hydrocarbon enrichment cultures made of polychaete homogenates. In pure cultures Joostella sp. A8 showed the highest stable emulsion percentage（78.33%）, hydrophobicity rate（62.67%）, and an optimal surface tension reduction during growth in mineral medium supplemented with diesel oil（reduction of about 12 mN/m）, thus proving to be highly competitive with Alcanivorax and Pseudomonas strains. During growth in pure culture different level of biodegradation were detected for Alcanivorax strain A53（52.7%）,Pseudomonas strain A6（38.2%） and Joostella strain A8（26.8%）. When growing in consortia,isolates achieved similar abundance values, with the best efficiency that was observed for the Joostella-Pseudomonas co-culture. Gas-chromatographic analysis revealed an increase in the biodegradation efficiency in co-cultures（about 90%）, suggesting that the contemporary action of different bacterial species could improve the process. Results were useful to compare the efficiencies of well-known biosurfactant producers（i.e. Pseudomonas and Alcanivorax representatives） with a still unknown biosurfactant producer, i.e. Joostella, and to confirm them as optimal biosurfactant-producing candidates.

Is human hepatocellular carcinoma a hormone-responsive tumor?

Before the positive results recently obtained with multitarget tyrosine kinase inhibitor sorafenib,there was no standard systemic treatment for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Sex hormones receptors are expressed in a significant proportion of HCC *** preclinical and epidemiological studies supporting a relationship between sex hormones and HCC tumorigenesis,several randomized controlled trials (RCTs)tested the efficacy of the anti-estrogen tamoxifen as systemic *** among these trials showed no survival advantage from the administration of tamoxifen,and the recent Cochrane systematic review produced a completely negative *** questions the relevance of estrogen receptor-mediated pathways in ***,a possible explanation for these disappointing results is the lack of proper patients selection according to sex hormones receptors expression,but unfortunately the interaction between this expression and efficacy of tamoxifen has not been studied *** has been also proposed that negative results might be explained if tamoxifen acts in HCC via an estrogen receptor-independent pathway,that requires higher doses than those usually administered, but an Asian RCT conducted to assess dose-response effect was completely ***,preliminaryresults have been obtained when hormonal treatment (tamoxifen or megestrol)has been selected according to the presence of wild-type or variant estrogen receptors respectively,but no large RCTs are available to support this *** results have been obtained also with anti-androgen *** conclusion,there is no robust evidence to consider HCC a hormone-responsive *** treatments should not be part of the current management of HCC.

Bitumen Removal Determination on Asphalt Pavement Using Digital Imaging Processing and Spectral Analysis

This research aims to define an efficient and fast quantification of bitumen removal on the road surface by Digital Imaging Processing (DIP) and spectral analysis. The retrieval of bitumen removal is an important issue for road management and environmental studies related to asphalt wear and environmental pollution. The calculation of the Exposed Aggregate Index (EAI), based on DIP, allows to quantify in each frame the superficial removal of bitumen and the exposure of aggregates. A procedure, based on non-parametric classification process of digital images, gives a fast response of EAI. A correlation among EAI and spectral data, between 390 nm and 900 nm range, is evaluated. Results show a good correlation between spectral data at different wavelength and EAI. Finally, this work evaluates the possibility to retrieve asphalt bitumen removal through remote sensed imagery.
