Wheat genotypic variability in grain yield and carbon isotope discrimination under Mediterranean conditions assessed by spectral reflectance

A collection of 368 advanced lines and cultivars of spring wheat（Triticum aestivum L.） from Chile, Uruguay, and CIMMYT（Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maíz y Trigo）, with good agronomic characteristics were evaluated under the Mediterranean conditions of central Chile. Three different water regimes were assayed： severe water stress（SWS, rain fed）, mild water stress（MWS; one irrigation around booting）, and full irrigation（FI; four irrigations： at tillering,flag leaf appearance, heading, and middle grain filling）. Traits evaluated were grain yield（GY）, agronomical yield components,days from sowing to heading, carbon isotope discrimination（△^13C） in kernels, and canopy spectral reflectance. Correlation analyses were performed for 70 spectral reflectance indices（SRI） and the other traits evaluated in the three trials. GY and △^13C were the traits best correlated with SRI, particularly when these indices were measured during grain filling. However,only GY could be predicted using a single regression, with ResearchNormalized Difference Moisture Index（NDMI2： 2,200; 1,100）having the best fit to the data for the three trials. For △^13C, only individual regressions could be forecast under FI（r^2： 0.25–0.37）and MWS（r^2： 0.45–0.59） but not under SWS（r^2： 0.03–0.09）.NIR‐based SRI proved to be better predictors than those that combine visible and NIR wavelengths.

Performance of Dairy Cows Supplemented with By-Pass Fat under Heat Stress Conditions

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of supplementation with a protected fat source on the productive response, metabolic environment and physiological indicators in Holstein cows under heat stress conditions during a 12-week experimental period. Thirty Holstein cows were distributed in 15 blocks by parity (2.0 ± 1.1), days in milk (182 ± 80) and milk production (29.4 ± 5.7 kg·day-1) at the beginning of the trial and randomly assigned within each block to the following treatments (diets): SPF: supplementation with protected fat or WPF: without supplementation with protected fat. All the cows were kept in a dry-lot where they were given a partial mixed ration (PMR) ad libitum while in the milking parlor they received individual supplementation depending on the treatment. The SPF diet contained 4.0 kg·day-1 concentrate in pellet form + 0.6 kg·day-1 ground corn grain + 0.7 kg·day-1 protected fat, while the WPF diet was similar to that offered in SPF, but the protected fat was isoenergetically replaced by ground corn grain. The fat supplement contained fats of animal and vegetable origin and microencapsulation was used for its preparation. Total dry matter and metabolic energy intakes were similar (p > 0.05) between treatments. Fat corrected milk (4% FCM) production was higher (p = 0.04), while energy corrected milk and fat productions tended (p = 0.06) to be higher in cows from the SPF group, without effects (p > 0.05) on the rest of the milk production and composition parameters. These results could be attributed to an improvement in the efficiency of the use of the energy consumed. Protected fat supplementation neither modified the metabolic profile, nor reduced the respiratory rate and body temperature of heat-stressed cows. Future research is needed to explain this latter result.

Synthesis of activated carbons from black sapote seeds,characterization and application in the elimination of heavy metals and textile dyes

Many different techniques may be used to remove industrial pollutants from wastewater. Adsorption using activated carbon has been reported to be an effective method. This work proposes the use of a vegetable residue(black sapote seeds) as a raw material for its synthesis. These carbons were chemically activated using phosphoric acid and carbonized at 673 and 873 K. Adsorption isotherms were constructed for the textile dyes on the carbons, and this data was treated using Langmuir’s equation to quantitatively describe the adsorption process. The synthesized carbons were characterized using FTIR, EA, SEM, Nitrogen adsorption(specific surface areas of 879 and 652 m2·g-1), and their points of zero charge(2.1 and 2.3). It was possible to adsorb both heavy metals and textile dyes present in aqueous solutions and wastewaters using these activated carbons. Heavy metals were adsorbed almost completely by both carbons. Cationic dyes where adsorbed(58–59.8 mg·g-1) in greater amounts compared to anionic dyes(10–58.8 mg·g-1). The amount of anionic dyes adsorbed increased almost 30% by changing the pH of the solutions. One of the carbons was thermally regenerated on three occasions without losing its adsorption capacity and it was proved in a flow system.

The structure and biological function of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in regulating gene expression in a cell is far from known. CircRNAs are unique molecules that contain potent regulatory elements. CircRNAs actively interact with miRNAs (sponging), affecting their regulation and functions. In addition, circRNAs have roles in transcriptional regulation, splicing, and peptide synthesis. With all these properties, circRNAs could play an essential role in diseases, especially Alzheimer’s. Their role in early diagnosis, previous to present symptoms, prognosis associated with neuropathological AD of specific circRNAs, and one of their primary functions is to act as a sponge for miRNAs, which could be a starting point for future gene therapy. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge of these exciting molecules and their potential use as new markers for AD risk. This article will focus on circRNAs deregulated in Alzheimer’s.

The present study was conducted to investigate the ability of Saccharomyces cerevisiae RC016(Sc)-based feed additive to reduce liver toxicity,residual aflatoxin B1(AFB1)levels and influence intestinal structure in broiler chickens fed chronic aflatoxin B1-contaminated diets.A total of 100 one-day-old male commercial line(Ross)broiler chickens were divided into 4 treatments,with 5 pens per treatment and 5 broiler chickens per *** were randomly assigned to 4 treatments,which were namely treatment 1(T1),control diet(CD);T2,CD+Sc at 1 g/kg;T3,CD+AFB1 at 100μg/kg;T4,CD+Sc at 1 g/kg+AFB1 at100μg/*** liver histopathology of broiler chickens fed diets with AFB1 showed diffused microvacuolar fatty *** addition of Sc showed normal hepatocytes similar to the *** small intestine villi from AFB1 group showed atrophy,hyperplasia of goblet cells,prominent inflammatory infiltrate and *** contrast,the small intestine villi from birds that received the yeast plus AFB1 showed an absence of inflammatory infiltrate,and atrophy;moreover,a lower number of goblet cells compared to the groups with AFB1 was *** morphometric intestine studies showed that a significant decrease(Pvalues when Sc was applied to AFB1-contaminated *** the intestinal villus height and apparent adsorption area did not show significant differences(P>0.05),there was a tendency to improve these *** residual levels of AFB1 in livers were significantly reduced(Pvers besides improving the histomorphometric parameters and modulating the toxic effect of AFB1 in the intestine.

AIM: To study glutamine synthetase (GS) activity and glutamate uptake in the hippocampus and frontal cortex (FC) from rats with prehepatic portal vein hypertension. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were divided into shamoperated group and a portal hypertension (PH) group with a regulated stricture of the portal vein. Animals were sacrificed by decapitation 14 d after portal vein stricture. GS activity was determined in the hippocampus and FC. Specific uptake of radiolabeled L-glutamate was studied using synaptosome-enriched fractions that were freshly prepared from both brain areas. RESULTS: We observed that the activity of GS increased in the hippocampus of PH rats, as compared to control animals, and decreased in the FC. A significant decrease in glutamate uptake was found in both brain areas, and was more marked in the hippocampus. The decrease in glutamate uptake might have been caused by a deficient transport function, signif icantly and persistent increase in this excitatory neurotransmitter activity. CONCLUSION: The presence of moderate ammonia blood levels may add to the toxicity of excitotoxic glutamate in the brain, which causes alterations in brain function. Portal vein stricture that causes portal hypertension modif ies the normal function in some brain regions.

Background: Evidence shows an association between grip strength and health;however, grip strength cut-offs for the detection of metabolic syndrome(MetS) in Latin American populations are scarce. The purpose of this study was to determine cut-offs of normalized grip strength(NGS)for the detection of MetS in a large nonrepresentative sample of a collegiate student population from ***: A total of 1795 volunteers(61.4% female;age = 20.68 ± 3.10 years, mean ± SD), ranging between 18 and 30 years of age participated in the study. Strength was estimated using a handheld dynamometer and normalized to body mass(handgrip strength(kg)/body mass(kg)). Anthropometrics, serum lipids indices, blood pressure, and fasting plasma glucose were measured. Body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. MetS was defined as including ≥3 of the 5 metabolic abnormalities according to the International Diabetes Federation definition. A metabolic risk score was computed from the following components: waist circumference, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, glucose, and systolic and diastolic blood ***: Receiver operating curve analysis showed significant discriminatory accuracy of NGS in identifying the thresholds and risk *** strength was associated with increased prevalence of MetS. In males, weak, intermediate, and strong NGS values at these points were0.615, respectively. In females, these cut-off points were 0.437, ***: Our sex-specific cut-offs of NGS could be incorporated into a clinical setting for identifying college students at cardiometabolic disease risk.

A Comparative Study of Different Strains of Trichoderma under Different Conditions of Temperature and pH for the Control of Rhizoctonia solani

Severe damage caused by R. solani in the potato crop and the current limitations for its control justify the assessment of potential biocontrol agents and their relationship with abiotic factors to be successfully included in sustainable production systems. The aim of this study was to test the effect of temperature (10˚C, 15˚C, 25˚C, 35˚C) and pH (5.5, 7, 8.5) on the growth and antagonist mechanisms of 26 native strains of 11 species of Trichoderma for the control of R. solani. The response obtained was dependent on the isolation, rather than on the Trichoderma specie that was tested. Most of them showed greater growth at 25˚C and pH 5.5, with overgrowth values between 75% and 100% and greater percentage of radial growth inhibition (PRGI) at 50%. A greater ability to compete for the substrate is observed, enhanced by its higher growth rate. Hyphal interaction mechanisms were varied and, at least, 92% of the isolations showed a minimum of two different types. Knowledge of the behavior of the different strains in front of varied abiotic factors will enable an understanding of the population dynamic of Trichoderma and the identification of the most efficient strains for the control of R. solani.

Molecular Docking Studies of Estrone-Coumarin Derivatives as Aromatase and 17β-HSD1 Inhibitors Related to Hormone Receptor Positive (HR+) Breast Cancer

Hormone Receptor positive (HR+) breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. New strategies in the treatments have targeted the estrogen biosynthesis pathways including the inhibition of the aromatase and 17β-HSD1 enzymes. The present work, describes the study of a new family of 9 hybrid compounds derived from estrone attached to a coumarin fragment, linked through different lengths of hydrocarbon chains. The activity of these compounds was evaluated by molecular docking with two relevant enzymes in breast cancer (HR+). It has been proposed nine compounds as 17β-HSD1 inhibitors and six as aromatase inhibitors. We found important interactions with key amino acids at the orthosteric site of each enzyme and their score values compared to the crystallographic ligand. The in silico analysis showed good score values in the proposed compounds, where the steroidal portion presented important interactions with Met374 and Tyr155 in aromatase and in 17β-HSD1 respectively. Highlighting Compounds 2, 5 and 8 with an aromatic ring at the C4 position of the coumarin moiety, which favored arene-H type interactions essential for protein-ligand recognition. In addition, the results related to the 17β-HSD1 enzyme demonstrated how the length of the linker influences the interaction;the best score was found for derivative 8 with a chain of 8 methylenes.
