Effect of dietary supplementation with olive and sunflower oils on lipid profile and liver histology in rats fed high cholesterol diet

Objective: To compare the effects of high-monounsaturated(MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA) against the metabolic disorders elicited by a high-cholesterol diet(Hc) in rats. Methods: Using in vivo dietary manipulation, rats were fed with different diets containing 4% soybean oil(cholesterol free diet) and 1% Hc containing 12% olive oil(Hc+OO) enriched with MUFA and 12% sunflower oil(Hc+SO) enriched with PUFA for 60 d. Serum lipid levels and hepatic steatosis were evaluated after the treatment period. Results: comparatively, rats treated with Hc+OO diet experienced a decrease in the serum LDL-c, VLDL-c and cT levels compared to those fed with Hc+SO diet(Pc+OO provoked significant microvesicular steatosis situated in the hepatic acinar zone 1. conclusions: Hc+OO diet has high absorption velocity in the acinar zone 1 of liver compared to the Hc+SO diet. Based on this, the reduction of the LDL-c, VLDL-c and cT serum levels in the animals treated with Hc+OO diet can be caused by the delay in the FA release to the blood.

chemometric Analysis of an Sanitary Landfill Leachate

This paper presents a study on the biotic/abiotic conditions of the S?o Giácomo sanitary landfill, located near the city of caxias do Sul, Brazil, through statistical analysis of fourteen physic-chemical data sets for the leachate, produced in the garbage dump site over a long period of years. Different chemometric methods are used in the statistical analysis. For example, the correlations between the variables, related to the degraded organic matter and biological activity, are determined by means of multivariate methods. The results highlight that BOD, cOD, VTS, FTS and TS give information on the anaerobic degradation of the organic matter contained in the cells, and suggest that the greater the contribution of the variables with positive weights in Pc1 the greater the level of organic matter degradation. The variables TN, Amon Nit. and alkalinity are related to the biological activity and determine the potency of the variables in relation to time. The greater the contribution of the variables related to organic degradation the greater the values in Pc2 and the lesser the potency of these variables, whose influence is greater in the second stage of anaerobic degradation. The variables of Pc2 is important plans of the contamination of the leached in the bodies hídrics.

Tailoring the partitioning of proteins using ionic liquids as adjuvants in polymer-polymer aqueous biphasic systems

Aqueous biphasic systems(ABS)are promising for proteins purification;however,when dealing with samples comprising several proteins,the selectivity towards a target protein is difficult to *** this work,the addition of ionic liquids(ILs)as adjuvants(5 wt%and 10 wt%)in ABS composed of polyethylene glycol(PEG)and dextran was investigated to tailor proteins partitioning between the coexisting *** liquid-liquid phase diagrams were determined at 298 K,followed by partition studies of three proteins(bovine serum albumin(BSA),immunoglobulin G(IgG),and cytochrome c(cyt c)).Partition coefficients of IgG and BSA indicate the preference of both proteins to the dextran-rich phase,whereas cyt c has no preferential partitioning between the *** addition of chloride-based ILs as adjuvants allows to increase or decrease the partition coefficients,thus tailoring the proteins partitioning between the *** partitioning essentially depends on the IL content in each phase,whereas cyt c and IgG partitioning is ruled by the ILs chemical structure and established *** docking was carried out to address the ILs effect on the proteins partitioning,supporting experimental observations,while identifying the specific interactions *** partition of each protein in polymer-salt ABS with ILs as adjuvants was determined,demonstrating the higher tailoring ability of polymer-polymer ABS when adding ***,the partition of each protein in presence of the remaining ones was determined,as well as the selectivity of the studied systems to separate each pair of proteins,paving the way for their use in liquidliquid chromatography.

Migraine is a recurrent and commonly disabling primary headache disorder that affects over 17% of women and 5%-8% of men. Migraine susceptibility is multifactorial with genetic, hormonal and environmental factors all playing an important role. The physiopathology of migraine is complex and still not fully understood. Many different neuropeptides, neurotransmitters and brain pathways have been implicated. In connection with the myriad mechanisms and pathways implicated in migraine, a variety of multisystemic comorbidities(e.g., cardiovascular, psychiatric and other neurological conditions) have been found to be closely associated with migraine. Recent reports demonstrate an increased frequency of gastrointestinal(GI) disorders in patients with migraine compared with the general population. Helicobacter pylori infection, irritable bowel syndrome, gastroparesis, hepatobiliary disorders, celiac disease and alterations in the microbiota have been linked to the occurrence of migraine. Several mechanisms involving the gut-brain axis, such as a chronic inflammatory response with inflammatory and vasoactive mediators passing to the circulatory system, intestinal microbiota modulation of the enteric immunological milieu and dysfunction of the autonomic and enteric nervous system, have been postulated to explain these associations. However, the precise mechanisms and pathways related to the gut-brain axis in migraine need to be fully elucidated. In this review, we survey the available literature linking migraine with GI disorders. We discuss the possible physiopathological mechanisms, and clinical implications as well as several future areas of interest for research.

cytoprotective role of heme oxygenase-1 and heme degradation derived end products in liver injury

The activation of heme oxygenase-1(HO-1) appears to be an endogenous defensive mechanism used by cells to reduce inflammation and tissue damage in a number of injury models. HO-1, a stress-responsive enzyme that catabolizes heme into carbon monoxide(cO), biliverdin and iron, has previously been shown to protect grafts from ischemia/reperfusion and *** addition, the products of the HO-catalyzed reaction, particularly cO and biliverdin/bilirubin, have been shown to exert protective effects in the liver against a number of stimuli, as in chronic hepatitis c and in transplanted liver grafts. Furthermore, the induction of HO-1 expression can protect the liver against damage caused by a number of chemical compounds. More specifically, the cO derived from HO-1-mediated heme catabolism has been shown to be involved in the regulation of inflammation; furthermore, administration of low concentrations of exogenous cO has a protective effect against inflammation. Both murine and human HO-1 deficiencies have systemic manifestations associated with iron metabolism, such as hepatic overload(with signs of a chronic hepatitis) and iron deficiency anemia(with paradoxical increased levels of ferritin).Hypoxia induces HO-1 expression in multiple rodent,bovine and monkey cell lines, but interestingly, hypoxia represses expression of the human HO-1 gene in a variety of human cell types(endothelial cells, epithelial cells, T cells). These data suggest that HO-1 and cO are promising novel therapeutic molecules for patients with inflammatory diseases. In this review, we present what is currently known regarding the role of HO-1 in liver injuries and in particular, we focus on the implications of targeted induction of HO-1 as a potential therapeutic strategy to protect the liver against chemically induced injury.
