This self repair system is based upon harmless ground borne bacteria as the self-healing *** bacteria are activated after the concrete is cracked and the bacterial spores are exposed to moisture and *** bacterial reproduction process creates a calcite by-product which fills the cracks in the *** sealing the cracks in concrete,an effective barrier to air or liquid borne deleterious materials are formed and as a consequence of this,enhanced durability is achieved in the structure,result-ing in lower life cycle *** concrete/mortar prisms were cracked and tested for water *** were then left for 56 days to heal and were subject to a test for water *** was observed and a reduced water flow(74%and 32%healed)measured with the healed samples when compared to the specimens that were cracked and subjected to a water flow test without any healing *** number of samples were limited and a larger scale test is recommended for further work;however,this is a proof of concept of the process of healing and testing.

If concrete is crack free,deleterious substances can be avoided entering the body of the material,that may corrode the rebar or encourage freeze/thaw *** paper examines a self healing system of cementitious *** induced calcite precipitation was used to heal cracks in concrete with calcite using bacillus bacteria in alkaline conditions to generate a calcite filling *** healing of cracked prisms was determined using a water flow and absorption test and the results were expressed to record the healing as a *** findings of the tests showed that a significant degree of self healing had taken place after 56 days after inducing a crack to the concrete prisms and the water flow test was appropriate to determine the degree of self healing taking *** of this process are such that the process requires a biological laboratory to create the spore impregnated *** the aggregate is prepared,the batching process is essentially the same as any normal concrete.A practical use of this system could be developed using cover panels of self healing material to act as permanent formwork,thus placing the healing ingredients where they are needed at a minimum *** system has huge potential for the creation of a self repairing sustainable infrastructure.

Fertilizer phosphorus(P)is a finite resource,necessitating the development of innovative solutions for P fertilizer efficiency in agricultural ***-inositol hexakisphosphate(phytate)constitutes the majority of identified organic P in many soil types and is poorly available to *** phytase-producing biofertilizers into soil presents a viable and environmentally acceptable way of utilizing P from phytate,while reducing the need for mineral P application.A deeper understanding of the microbial ecology in relation to degradation of phytate under natural soil conditions is however needed to obtain successful biofertilizer candidates able to compete in complex soil *** we present the development of a microcosm for studying microbial communities able to colonize and utilize Ca-phytate hotspots in *** results provide evidence that the recruited microbial population mineralizes ***,quantification of bacterial genes associated with organic P cycling in alkaline soils indicated that the phosphatases PhoX and PhoD may play a larger role in phytate mineralization in soil than previously *** sequencing and BioLog®catabolism studies show that hotspots containing Ca-phytate,recruited a different set of microorganisms when compared to those containing an addition of C source alone,with the genus Streptomyces specifically *** propose that Streptomyces represents an hitherto unexplored resource as P biofertilizer with competitive advantage for utilizing CaPhy in an inherently competitive soil *** further conclude that the use of our newly designed microcosm presents an innovative approach for isolating soil microorganisms with the potential to degrade precipitated phytate in solum.

Purpose Elite endurance runners frequently utilise live high-train high(LHTH)altitude training to improve endurance per-formance at sea level(SL).Individual variability in response to the hypoxic exposure have resulted in contradictory *** the present case study,changes in total haemoglobin mass(tHbmass)and physiological capacity,in response to 4-weeks of LHTH were *** tested if a hypoxic sensitivity test(HST)could predict altitude-induced adaptations to *** Fifteen elite athletes were selected to complete 4-weeks of LHTH(~2400 m).Athletes visited the laboratory for preliminary testing(PRE),to determine lactate threshold(LT),lactate turn point(LTP),maximal oxygen uptake VO_(2max)and *** LHTH,athletes completed daily physiological measures[arterial oxygen saturation(SpO2)and body mass]and subjective wellbeing *** was repeated,for those who completed the full camp,post-LHTH(POST).Additionally,athletes completed the HST prior to *** A difference(P<0.05)was found from PRE to POST in average tHbmass(1.8%±3.4%),VO_(2max)(2.7%±3.4%),LT(6.1%±4.6%)and LTP(5.4%±3.8%),after 4-weeks *** revealed a decrease in oxygen saturation at rest(ΔSp_(r))and higher hypoxic ventilatory response at rest(HVRr)predicted individual changes *** hypoxic cardiac response at rest(HCRr)and higher HVRr predicted individual changes VO_(2max).Conclusion Four weeks of LHTH at~2400 m increased tHbmass and enhanced physiological capacity in elite endurance *** was no observed relationship between these changes and baseline characteristics,pre-LHTH serum ferritin levels,or reported incidents of musculoskeletal injury or *** HST did however,estimate changes in tHbmass and VO_(2max).HST prior to LHTH could allow coaches and practitioners to better inform the acclimatisation strategies and train-ing load application of endurance runners at altitude.

Effective treatment of infection in chronic wounds is critical to improve patient outcomes and prevent severe complications,including systemic infections,increased morbidity,and *** treatments,including antibiotic administration and antimicrobial dressings,are challenged by the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance and patients’sensitivity to the delivered *** studies have demonstrated the potential of a new antimicrobial agent,Gallium maltolate(GaM);however,the high burst release from the GaMloaded hydrogel gauze required frequent dressing *** address this need,we developed a hydrogel foambased wound dressing with GaM-loaded microspheres for sustained infection ***,the minimal inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations(MIC and MBC)of GaM against two Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from chronic wounds were *** significant adverse effects of GaM on dermal fibroblasts were shown at the MIC,indicating an acceptable selectivity *** the sustained release of GaM,electrospraying was employed to fabricate microspheres with different release *** investigation of loading and microsphere size on release kinetics indicated that the larger microsphere size and lower GaM loading resulted in a sustained GaM release profile over the target 5 *** of the GaM-loaded hydrogel dressing demonstrated cytocompatibility and antibacterial activities with a zone of inhibition *** equine distal limb wound model was developed and utilized to demonstrate the efficacy of GaM-loaded hydrogel foam in *** antimicrobial hydrogel foam dressing displayed the potential to combat methicillin-resistant ***(MRSA)infection with controlled GaM release to improve chronic wound healing.

The Southern Irumide Belt(SIB)is an orogenic belt consisting of a number of lithologically varied Mesoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic terranes that were thrust upon each *** belt lies along the southwest margin of the Archaean to Proterozoic Congo Craton,and bears a Neoproterozoic tectonothermal overprint relating to the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian collision between the Congo and Kalahari *** preserves a record of about 500 million years of plate interaction along this part of the Congo *** zircon samples from the SIB were analysed for U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopes,as well as trace element *** data are used to constrain sediment-source relationships between SIB terranes and other Gondwanan terranes such as the local Congo Craton and Irumide belt and wider afield to Madagascar(Azania)and *** correlations are then used to interpret the Mesoproterozoic to Neoproterozoic affinity of the rocks and evolution of the *** zircon samples from the Chewore-Rufunsa and Kacholola(previously referred to as Luangwa-Nyimba)terranes of the SIB yield zircon U-Pb age populations and evolvedε(Hf)(t)values that are similar to the Muva Supergroup found throughout eastern Zambia,primarily correlating with Ubendian-Usagaran(ca.2.05-1.80 Ga)phase magmatism and a cryptic basement terrane that has been suggested to underlie the Bangweulu Block and Irumide *** data suggest that the SIB was depositionally connected to the Congo Craton throughout the *** more eastern Nyimba-Sinda terrane of the SIB(previously referred to as Petauke-Sinda terrane)records detrital zircon ages andε(Hf)(t)values that correlate with ca.1.1-1.0 Ga magmatism exposed elsewhere in the SIB and Irumide *** ascribe this difference in age populations to the polyphase development of the province,where the sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Nyimba-Sinda terrane accumulated in extensional basins that developed in the *** deposition wou
