Zinc partitioning in basmati rice varieties as influenced by Zn fertilization

Zinc(Zn) ferti-fortification using different sources and methods in Zn deficient soils is being advocated to increase Zn concentration in rice kernel as an alternative to pursuing greater Zn-use efficiency(ZnUE). A two-year field study was conducted to assess the effect of Zn application on Zn content and uptake at several growth stages and in several parts of the rice kernel: hull, bran, and the white rice kernel. Variety ‘PB 1509' with 1.25 kg Zn ha^(-1) as Zn-EDTA + 0.5% foliar spray(FS) at maximum tillering(MT) and panicle initiation(PI) stages registered the highest Zn content in hull, bran, and white rice kernel. Among parts of the rice kernel, Zn concentration decreased in the order hull > bran > white rice kernel,indicating that brown rice kernels are much denser in Zn content than polished *** the higher Zn accumulation in the bran, brown rice consumption, especially in Asia and Africa, could be recommended to overcome Zn malnutrition. The variety ‘PB 1401'showed the highest Zn uptake in rice straw, while ‘PB 1509' showed the highest Zn uptake in hull and white rice kernel. Application of 1.25 kg Zn ha^(-1)(Zn-EDTA) + 0.5% FS at MT and PI and 2.5 kg Zn ha^(-1) ZnSO_4·7H_2O(ZnSHH) + 0.5% FS at MT and PI resulted in higher Zn uptake than other treatments. On average, about one third of total Zn uptake remained in the white rice kernel, with the remaining two thirds accumulating in both hull and bran of brown rice. Zn-EDTA along with 0.5% FS, despite the application of a lower quantity of Zn leading to the highest Zn mobilization efficiency index(ZnMEI) and Zn-induced nitrogen recovery efficiency(ZniNRE), produced the highest kernel yield. However, of the two Zn sources, Zn-EDTA contributed more to the increase in ZnUE than did ZnSHH.

Purification and characterization of CHpro1, a thermotolerant, alkali-stable and oxidation-resisting protease of Chumathang hotspring

Metagenomic approaches are recently used for searching novel open reading frames （ORFs） coding enzymes employed in pharmaceutical, rood industries, etc. In this study, a metagenornic library was constructed from Chumathang hotspring sediment DNA. The library consisted of approximately 9,000 clones and was screened for protease activity. A clone exhibiting protease activity was identified and named CHprol. Sequencing of CHprol revealed that the ORF encoded a functional protein of 363 amino acids belonging to peptidase S8-S53 superfamily. CHprol shared 41% sequence similarity with a reported protease （subtilase family） and 35 % structural similarity with the crystal structure of Pro-Tk sps. of Thermococcus kodarkaenasis. In silico modeling the 3D structure of CHprol showed that it has two beta sheets, 10 alpha helices and 11 strands. Catalytic triad prediction implied CHprol to be a serine protease. The optimum temperature and pH of the purified protease were found to be 80 ℃ and 11.0, respectively. The enzyme was active at 5 % concentration of hydrogen peroxide and retained 60 % of activity at 10 % concentration. The thermotolerant, alkalophilic and oxidant stable properties of the protease make it a potential can- didate for biotechnological applications.

Emerging sub-synchronous interactions(SSI)in wind-integrated power systems have added intense attention after numerous incidents in the US and China due to the involvement of series compensated transmission lines and power electronics *** phenomenon occurs when two power system elements exchange energy below the synchro-nous *** phenomenon related to wind power plants is one of the most significant challenges to main-taining stability,while SSI phenomenon in practical wind farms,which has been observed recently,has not yet been described on the source of conventional SSI *** paper first explains the traditional development of SSI and its classification as given by the IEEE,and then it proposes a classification of SSI according to the current research status,reviews several mitigation techniques and challenges,and discusses analysis techniques for *** paper also describes the effect of the active damping controllers,control scheme parameters,degree of series compensation,and various techniques used in wind power plants(WPPs).In particular,a supplementary damping controller with converter controllers in Doubly Fed Induction Generator based WPPs is briefly *** paper provides a real-istic viewpoint and a potential outlook for the readers to properly deal with SSI and its mitigation techniques,which can help power engineers for the planning,economical operation,and future expansion of sustainable development.

Hunting of hunted:an ensemble modeling approach to evaluate suitable habitats for caracals in India

Background:Large-scale hunting and various anthropogenic pressures in the recent past have pushed the Asiatic caracal(Caracal caracal schmitzi),an elusive medium-sized and locally threatened felid species towards local extinction in *** widely distributed historically,it has been sparsely reported from several regions of central and northern states in India till twentieth ***,the species distribution became confined only to the states of Rajasthan,Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh,which have had reported sightings in the twenty-first *** order to highlight the potentially suitable habitats for Asiatic caracals in India,we targeted forth-filtering of the spatial model ensemble by creating and utilizing the validated and spatially thinned species presence information(n=69)and related ecological variables(aridity,NDVI,precipitation seasonality,temperature seasonality,terrain ruggedness),filtered with anthropological variable(nightlight).Results:Out of eight spatial prediction models,the two most parsimonious models,Random Forest(AUC 0.91)and MaxEnt(AUC 0.89)were weighted and *** ensemble model indicated several clustered habitats,covering 1207.83 km^(2)areas in Kachchh(Gujarat),Aravalli mountains(Rajasthan),Malwa plateau(Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh),and Bundelkhand region(Madhya Pradesh)as potentially suitable habitats for *** probabilities of pixels were further regressed with converted vegetation height data within selected highly potential habitats,i.e.,Ranthambore Kuno Landscape(RKL)(suitability~0.44+0.03(vegetation height)^(**),R^(2)=0.27).The regression model inferred a significant positive relation between vegetation height and habitat suitability,hence the lowest ordinal class out of three classes of converted vegetation height was masked out from the RKL,which yielded in an area of 567 km^(2) as potentially highly suitable habitats for caracals,which can be further proposed as survey areas and conservation priority are

The novel coronavirus disease-2019(COVID-19)is caused by a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus which belongs to the Coronaviridae *** March 2019 the World Health Organization declared that COVID-19 was a ***-19 patients typically have a fever,dry cough,dyspnea,fatigue,and *** patients also report gastrointestinal(GI)symptoms,including diarrhea,nausea,vomiting,and abdominal pain,as well as liver enzyme ***,many studies have found severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)viral RNA in rectal swabs and stool specimens of asymptomatic COVID-19 *** addition,viral receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and transmembrane protease serine-type 2,were also found to be highly expressed in gastrointestinal epithelial cells of the intestinal ***,SARS-CoV-2 can dynamically infect and replicate in both GI and liver *** together these results indicate that the GI tract is a potential target of ***,the present review summarizes the vital information available to date on COVID-19 and its impact on GI aspects.

In many construction projects,a proactive slope stability evaluation is a *** many deterministic or non-deterministic approaches have been commonly used,metaheuristic approaches have resulted in high precision and significant outcomes for slope stability analysis *** current work focuses on the reliable assessment of critical failure surfaces associated with the least factor of safety value in both homogeneous and non-homogeneous slopes using a new simplified meta-heuristic approach called optics-inspired optimization(OIO).The algorithm utilizes six different LEM methods as a fitness function for deriving the factor of *** analysis over three benchmark studies has been performed to demonstrate the algorithm's robustness and *** implementation found more robust results as compared to previous ***,the algorithm's statistical implication is conducted using the ANOVA test,which inferred better *** this interpretation,the approach claims to be suitable and efficient for slope stability analysis.

Novel targeting approaches and signaling pathways of colorectal cancer: An insight

Colorectal cancer(CRC) is the third most common cancer of mortality in the world. Chemotherapy based treatment leads to innumerable side effects as it delivers the anticancer drug to both normal cells besides cancer cells. Sonic Hedgehog(SHH), Wnt wingless-type mouse mammary tumor virus/β-catenin, transforming growth factor-β/SMAD, epidermal growth factor receptor and Notch are the main signaling pathways involved in the progression of CRC. Targeted therapies necessitate information regarding the particular aberrant pathways. Advancements in gene therapies have resulted in the recognition of novel therapeutic targets related with these signal-transduction cascades. CRC is a stepwise process where mutations occur over the time and activation of oncogenes and deactivation of tissue suppressor genes takes place. Genetic changes which are responsible for the induction of carcinogenesis include loss of heterozygosity in tumor suppressor genes such as adenomatous polyposis coli, mutation or deletion of genes like p53 and K-ras. Therefore, many gene-therapy approaches like gene correction, virusdirected enzyme-prodrug therapy, immunogenetic manipulation and virotherapy are currently being explored. Development of novel strategies for the safe and effective delivery of drugs to the cancerous site is the need of the hour. This editorial accentuates different novel strategies with emphasis on gene therapy and immunotherapy for the management of CRC.
