Antifouling evaluation of extracts from Red Sea soft corals against primary biofilm and biofouling

Objectives: To evaluate antifouling property of extracts from Red Sea soft corals against primary biofilm and biofouling.Methods: Seven species of soft corals Sarcophyton glaucum(a), Sinularia compressa,Sinularia cruciata(a), Heteroxenia fuscescens(a), Sarcophyton glaucum(b), Heteroxenia fuscescens(b) and Sinularia cruciata(b) were chosen to test their extracts as antibacterial and antifouling agents in Eastern Harbour of Alexandria, Mediterranean Sea.Bioactive compounds of soft corals were extracted by using methanol and concentrated under vacuum. The residues of extracts were mixed in formulation of inert paint which consisted of rosin, chlorinated rubber and ferrous oxide against micro and macro fouling organisms. The formulated paints were then applied on PVC panels twice by brush,hanged in a steel frame and immersed in Eastern Harbour of Alexandria Mediterranean Sea followed by visual inspection and photographic recordings.Results: After 185 days of immersion in seawater, the antifouling results agreed with the antibacterial results where extracts of Sinularia compressa and Heteroxenia fuscescens(b) gave the best activity against marine fouling tubeworms and barnacles. The inhibition activity was correlated with the major functional groups(hydroxyl, amino, carbonyl,aliphatic(fatty acids), C]C of alkene or aromatic rings and CeC l of aryl halides) of the extracts.Conclusions: The strong antifouling activity makes them promising candidates for new antifouling additives. After the screening and application of natural organic compounds from soft corals, marine organisms show activity against micro and macro fouling organisms.

Numerical and experimental analyses of rock failure mechanisms due to microwave treatment

Despite the extensive studies conducted on the effectiveness of microwave treatment as a novel rock preconditioning method,there is yet to find reliable data on the rock failure mechanisms due to microwave heating.In addition,there is no significant discussion on the energy efficiency of the method as one of the important factors among the mining and geotechnical engineers in the industry.This study presents a novel experimental method to evaluate two main rock failure mechanisms due to microwave treatment without applying any mechanical forces,i.***.distributed and concentrated heating.The result shows that the existence of a small and concentrated fraction of a strong microwave absorbing mineral will change the failure mechanism from the distributed heating to the concentrated heating,which can increase the weakening over microwave efficiency(WOME)by more than 10 folds.This observation is further investigated using the developed coupled numerical model.It is shown that at the same input energy,the existence of microwave absorbing minerals can cause major heat concentration inside the rock and increase the maximum temperature by up to three times.

Fast adaptive regression-based model predictive control

Model predictive control(MPC)is an optimal control method that predicts the future states of the system being controlled and estimates the optimal control inputs that drive the predicted states to the required reference.The computations of the MPC are performed at pre-determined sample instances over a finite time horizon.The number of sample instances and the horizon length determine the performance of the MPC and its computational cost.A long horizon with a large sample count allows the MPC to better estimate the inputs when the states have rapid changes over time,which results in better performance but at the expense of high computational cost.However,this long horizon is not always necessary,especially for slowly-varying states.In this case,a short horizon with less sample count is preferable as the same MPC performance can be obtained but at a fraction of the computational cost.In this paper,we propose an adaptive regression-based MPC that predicts the best minimum horizon length and the sample count from several features extracted from the time-varying changes of the states.The proposed technique builds a synthetic dataset using the system model and utilizes the dataset to train a support vector regressor that performs the prediction.The proposed technique is experimentally compared with several state-of-the-art techniques on both linear and non-linear models.The proposed technique shows a superior reduction in computational time with a reduction of about 35–65%compared with the other techniques without introducing a noticeable loss in performance.

研究在医用Ti6Al4V合金上采用阴极电弧蒸发沉积制备的纳米晶TiAlN涂层的表面特性和体外腐蚀性能。采用XRD和FE-SEM对其结构和表面形貌进行分析,采用显微压痕法表征其表面的显微硬度,在模拟体液和人工唾液中进行体外腐蚀实验。结果表明:与无涂层合金相比,沉积TiAlN涂层后合金的表面硬度提高,为44.4 GPa,弹性模量为419.9 GPa,塑性变形能力增强,润湿角由(70.61±1.25)°增大到(86.27±2.2)°。生物腐蚀实验表明,沉积TiAlN涂层后,Ti6Al4V合金的腐蚀电位显著正移约150 m V,腐蚀电流密度显著降低约一个数量级,电荷转移电阻提高,证明合金的耐腐蚀性提高。与无涂层的合金相比,沉积TiAlN涂层后合金的表面性能、力学性能和耐腐蚀性能均有所提高。

Does local vaginal estrogen after tension-free transobturator vaginal tape reduce overactive bladder symptoms in postmenopausal women? A prospective randomized, controlled study

Objective:We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of topical estrogen after transvaginal tension-free vaginal tape-obturator(TVT-O)in the treatment of de novo overactive bladder symptoms that appear after surgery.Methods:This is a prospective randomized controlled study performed in the Urology and Gynecology Departments,Kasr Al Ainy Hospital,Cairo University,Cairo,Egypt.Two hundred and ten postmenopausal females presenting during the period between January 2017 and November 2020 with stress urinary incontinence were included in the study.Patients were divided into two groups,105 patients in Group A(treatment group)and 105 patients in Group B(control group).Patients in Group A underwent transvaginal TVT-O followed by local vaginal estrogen treatment for 6 months,while patients in Group B underwent transvaginal TVT-O only.The study included any postmenopausal female with urodynamic stress urinary incontinence.All patients had to fulfill a 3-day bladder diary,overactive bladder symptoms score,urine analysis,urodynamic study,and post-voiding residual urine measurement by abdominal ultrasound preoperatively and at 3-month and 6-month follow-ups.Results:At 6-month follow-up,daytime frequency was reduced to 8%in Group A(increased to 21%in Group B)with a statistically significant difference between both groups(p=0.009).At 6-month follow-up,nocturia was 8%in Group A(11%in Group B)with no statistically significant difference between both groups(p=0.469).There was a statistically significant difference between both groups as regards to urinary urgency at 6-month follow-up(p=0.024).There was a statistically significant difference in postoperative wound healing events as regards to cure,hyperemia,gapping,and wound infection 1 week after intervention between both groups(p=0.008).No local or systemic side-effects were reported from local estrogen use.Conclusion:Local vaginal estrogen treatment given to postmenopausal patients after midurethral sling procedures can reduce the symptoms of daytime frequency and urinary urgency.Long-ter

药品和个人护理产品(PPCPs)是一类新兴的有机污染物(EOC),包含各类抗生素、激素和人工合成麝香等。近些年,PPCPs在生活污水和工业废水中被广泛检出,如果不经过处理,将通过江河湖泊,在食物链中层层富集,最终影响人类健康。大多数PPCPs结构稳定,自然条件下难以降解,常规水处理技术难以将其有效去除。光催化技术是一种将太阳能转化为化学能的工艺,具有环保、可持续和低成本的优点,因此被广泛应用于PPCPs类污染物的降解。铋基光催化剂(BiVO)具有窄带隙、n型结构、可见光响应、无毒、成本低、稳定性好等优点,可作为光催化剂降解PPCPs。为提高BiVO电子空穴的分离效率,本研究采用金属和非金属掺杂。此外,为了节省制备过程中的功耗,使用快速合成方法在低于100℃条件下制备不同的光催化剂,以降解各种PPCPs。与水热合成法(HSM)和微波水热合成法(MHSM)相比,快速合成方法在低于100℃(STSM)对氧氟沙星(OFL)的降解表现出优越性,STSM、HSM和MHSM制备的BiVO对OFL的去除率分别为0.02855、0.02151和0.01422 min。研究还表明,制备条件的p H值为7时,Gd掺杂比其他金属掺杂更有优势,Br掺杂相对于S掺杂更有优势。利用紫外-可见漫反射光谱(DRS)、透射电子显微镜(TEM)、扫描电子显微镜(SEM)、X射线衍射(XRD)、X射线光电子能谱(XPS)、光致发光光谱(PL)和比表面积分析(BET)对光催化剂进行表征,分析改性前后光催化剂的特性。Gd掺杂使BiVO具有四方相结构,而Br的掺杂对BiVO的单斜相结构没有影响。采用快速合成方法在低于100℃条件下合成原始和改性BiVO光催化剂,结果表明,快速合成的材料在Gd掺杂后显著增加了原始BiVO光催化剂材料的比表面积。同时,Br的掺杂对BiVO的吸收边和禁带宽度影响较小,而Gd的掺杂对吸收边和禁带宽度有较大影响。此外,Gd掺杂影响了BiVO的粒径,使其粒径变小,有助于提高其吸附和光催化活性,而Br对原始BiVO的粒径几乎没有影响。在太阳光条件下,5%、7%和10%的Gd掺杂BiVO对OFL的去除速率常数分别是未改性BiVO的1.53、1.61和1.83倍。暗反应40 min,光照1 h后,5%Gd-BiVO对双氯芬酸、盐酸四环素、氧氟沙星、罗丹明B和磺胺嘧啶(10 mg/L)的降解率分别达到98.63±0.08%、98.07±0.49%、97.98±2.02%、92.09±0.36%和78.56±0.38%。在酸性条件下,Gd掺杂的光催化剂具有较好的光催化性能,SO和HPO显著抑制了OFL的降解,这是由于SO和HPO离子对h和OH的捕获。5%Gd-BiVO在循环使用5次后也表现出较好的降解性能,具有良好的可重复利用性。研究发现,在BiVO、Br-BiVO和Gd-BiVO体系中,光生空穴h和O是主要的活性物种,而OH在整个体系中的作用较小。根据淬灭实验和ESR实验结果,提出了BiVO和Gd-BiVO体系的降解机制。本研究通过较简单方法制备的Gd掺杂BiVO光催化剂,提升了光生电子空穴的分离效率,在模拟太阳光照射下,实现了高效降解PPCPs和染料类污染物。

Novel design of a compact tunable dual band wireless power transfer(TDB-WPT)system for multiple WPT applications

In this study we present the design and realization of a tunable dual band wireless power transfer(TDB-WPT)coupled resonator system.The frequency response of the tunable band can be controlled using a surface-mounted varactor.The transmitter(Tx)and the receiver(Rx)circuits are symmetric.The top layer contains a feed line with an impedance of 50Ω.Two identical half rings defected ground structures(HR-DGSs)are loaded on the bottom using a varactor diode.We propose a solution for restricted WPT systems working at a single band application according to the operating frequency.The effects of geometry,orientation,relative distance,and misalignments on the coupling coefficients were studied.To validate the simulation results,the proposed TDB-WPT system was fabricated and tested.The system occupied a space of 40 mm×40 mm.It can deliver power to the receiver with an average coupling efficiency of 98%at the tuned band from 817 to 1018 MHz and an efficiency of 95%at a fixed band of 1.6 GHz at a significant transmission distance of 22 mm.The results of the measurements accorded well with those of an equivalent model and the simulation.

A new approach towards the sustainability of urban-rural integration:The development strategy for central villages in the Abbasiya District of Iraq using GIS techniques

The development of rural areas usually has a positive impact on the urban-rural integration. This study explores an innovative approach to stimulate rural development by proposing qualified villages as central villages that can provide basic urban services for their residents and residents of neighboring villages. This approach can contribute to overcoming the various problems that rural areas faced at the social, economic, and environmental levels. It seeks to achieve spatial sustainability of rural areas, representing a new approach by integrating urban development methods to revitalize rural villages. The study analyzed 15 villages belonging to Abbasiya District of AL Kufa City in the Najaf Governorate of Iraq. Based on the GIS techniques and the analysis of urban service indicators(village population, percentage of urban building materials used in villages, distance between village and health centers, distance between village and main roads, nature of economic activity, distance between village and educational institutions, distance between village and drinking water sources, number of communication towers, and distance between village and urban administrative center), this study proposed that Abu Gharb and Albu Ghraib can served as central villages in Abbasiya District in the future. This study establishes a new rural spatial structure to achieve rural sustainable development, improves the development status of rural areas, and provides a theoretical basis for the government and relevant institutions to use urban service indicators, achieving rural sustainable development and formulating relevant development policies in Abbasiya District.
