Besides the Indonesian throughflow(ITF), the South China Sea throughflow(SCSTF) also contributes to the water transport from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean. However, this South China Sea(SCS) branch at the Karimata Strait is poorly observed until 2007, even though its importance has been suggested by numerical studies for decades. In this paper, we review the nearly 10-year field measurement in the Karimata Strait by the execution of the projects of "SCS-Indonesian Seas Transport/Exchange(SITE) and Impacts on Seasonal Fish Migration" and "The Transport, Internal Waves and Mixing in the Indonesian Throughflow regions(TIMIT) and Impacts on Marine Ecosystem", which extend the observations from the western Indonesian seas to the east to include the main channels of the ITF, is introduced. Some major achievements from these projects are summarized.

Effect of Leachate Recirculation on Settlement and Leachate Generation of Municipal Solid Waste from Landfill Lysimeter

The objectives of this study are to determine the settlement and leachate generation from landfill lysimeters of municipal solid waste. Two identical lysimeters with a diameter and height of 0.70 m and 2.40 m were prepared, respectively. The lysimeters were operated with and without leachate recirculation treatment. The settlement and leachate generation were quantified daily. The analysis of settlement was conducted by using hyperbolic function and curve fitting. Based on the experiments result, it is observed that garbage pile settlement in lysimeter treated with leachate recirculation （L-2） is higher than without recirculation treatment （L-1） as showed by the hyperbolic function and curve fitting result. The ultimate settlement （S_wlt） for L-1 and L-2 that used hyperbolic function were 0.487 m and 0.53 m, respectively. Meanwhile （S_wlt） that using curve fitting resulted 0.74 m, and 0.68 m for L-1 and L-2, respectively. The lysimeter which treated with leachate recirculation treatment showed a higher leachate height than without the treatment.

近年来,企业社会责任（CSR）在企业界和学术研究中意义日益凸显。“企业社会责任”一词清楚地表明,企业需要额外承担社会责任,而以往公司仅看重在生产经营活动中对股东负责的义务。如今,赋权概念已成为一种发展范式。印度尼西亚政府有望将协调和负责一系列的社区发展活动,使整个社区都能积极参与,同时公司通过其“企业社会责任”来履行社会责任,为社区赋权进程做出贡献。本研究评估了一家矿业公司（PT Vale Indonesia）开展的企业社会责任活动。在过去的五十年中,PT Vale Indonesia（PTVI）一直根据与印度尼西亚政府签订的工程合同（Co W）协议,在印度尼西亚Sorowako附近露天开采镍矿和通过设备进行加工。本文通过对PTVI实施的企业社会责任计划（即综合社区发展计划）的调查研究,提供了PTVI的计划使周边社区有益的实证证据。本研究的目的是探索企业社会责任实践的概念,PTVI通过对该概念的观察和应用,创造了有助于社区赋权的双赢局面。该案例研究的结果有助于更深入地了解综合社区发展计划（ICDP）在社区赋权中的作用,并有助于了解公司如何应对企业社会责任活动对社区赋权的挑战。此外,本研究还为企业社会责任实践模式、地方政府和社会工作者在印度尼西亚旨在促进社区赋权的企业社会责任倡议中的作用以及实际情况提出了建议,本研究将为制定一个有效的企业社会责任模式进行社区赋权提供参考。

Break Up of <i>N</i>-Soliton Bound State in a Gradient Refractive Index Waveguide with Nonlocal Nonlinearity

We study the propagation of N-soliton bound state in a triangular gradient refractive index waveguide with nonlocal nonlinearity. The study is based on the direct numerical solutions of the model and subsequent eigenvalues evolution of the corresponding Zakharov-Shabat spectral problem. In the waveguide with local nonlinearity, the velocity of a single soliton is found to be symmetric around zero and therefore the soliton oscillates periodically inside the waveguide. If the nonlocality is presence in the medium, the periodic motion of soliton is destroyed due to the soliton experiences additional positive acceleration induced by the nonlocality. In the waveguide with the same strength of nonlocality, a higher amplitude soliton experiences higher nonlocality effects, i.e. larger acceleration. Based on this soliton behavior we predict the break up of N-soliton bound state into their single-soliton constituents. We notice that the splitting process does not affect the amplitude of each soliton component.

Prosody in speech synthesis systems (text-to-speech) is a determinant of tone, duration, and loudness of speech sound. Intonation is a part of prosody which determines the speech tone. In Indonesian, intonation is determined by the structure of sentences, types of sentences, and also the position of the word in a sentence. In this study, a model of speech synthesis that focuses on its intonation is proposed. The speech intonation is determined by sentence structure, intonation patterns of the example sentences, and general rules of Indonesian pronunciation. The model receives texts and intonation patterns as inputs. Based on the general principle of Indonesian pronunciation, a prosody file was made. Based on input text, sentence structure is determined and then interval among parts of a sentence (phrase) can be determined. These intervals are used to correct the duration of the initial prosody file. Furthermore, the frequencies in prosody file were corrected using intonation patterns. The final result is prosody file that can be pronounced by speech engine application. Experiment results of studies using the original voice of radio news announcer and the speech synthesis show that the peaks of?F0?are determined by general rules or intonation patterns which are dominant. Similarity test with the PESQ method shows that the result of the synthesis is 1.18 at MOS-LQO scale.

Antioxidant activity of curcumine as protector on methylmercury inducedpancreas damage in mice

Curcumin has been reported to have a strong antioxidant activity. In recent years, use of antioxidant in reducing heavy metal toxicities has been increased worldwide. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of curcumin on methylmercury-induced pancreas damage in mice. Briefly, 50 male mice were divided into five groups as follows: negative control(mice were given daily with aquadest); positive control(mice were orally given 2 mg/kg BW methylmercury daily for 35 d); and the treatment groups(mice were orally adminstered with curcumin 100 mg; 200 mg; 400 mg/kg BW daily for 35 d, and from 5th day, animals were given 2 mg/kg BW methylmercury daily 1 h after curcumin administration for 30 d). On day 35, levels of glucose, insulin, MDA, SOD and GPx were measured. Pancreas also was fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin solution for histopathological examination. The results revealed that methylmercury toxicity induced a significant increase in the levels of glucose and MDA. Moreover, a significant decrease in insulin, SOD and GPx levels was observed, and pancreas tissues showed degeneration and necrotic changes in the islets of Langerhans. Treatment with curcumin(400 mg/kg BW but not 200 mg/kg BW and 100 mg/kg BW) significantly(P<0.05) decreased glucose and MDA levels in pancreas in mercury-induced mice. Treatment with curcumin 400 mg/kg BW also significantly increased insulin, SOD and GPx levels and reversed the histopathological damage in methylmercury-induced mice. Taken together, curcumin could be a potent natural herbal product, which had pancreas protective effect against methylmercury-induced pancreas damage in mice.

Manuscript preprocessing is the earliest stage in transliteration process of manuscripts in Javanese scripts. Manuscript preprocessing stage is aimed to produce images of letters which form the manuscripts to be processed further in manuscript transliteration system. There are four main steps in manuscript preprocessing, which are manuscript binarization, noise reduction, line segmentation, and character segmentation for every line image produced by line segmentation. The result of the test on parts of PB.A57 manuscript which contains 291 character images, with 95% level of confidence concluded that the success percentage of preprocessing in producing Javanese character images ranged 85.9% - 94.82%.
