Understanding rock strength is essential when undertaking major excavation projects,as accurate assessments ensure both safe and cost-effective engineered *** the cost-safety trade-off becomes more imperative during the construction of critical infrastructure such as nuclear power stations,where key components are built within relatively deep *** these engineered slopes is reliant on rock strength models,which are generally parameterised using estimates of rock properties(*** compressive strength,rock disturbance)measured prior to the commencement of ***,the physical process of excavation weakens the remaining rock ***,the model also requires an adjustment for the anticipated rock *** practice,this parameter is difficult to quantify and as a result it is often poorly *** can have a significant impact on the final design and cost of *** present results from passive and active seismic surveys,which image the extent and degree of disturbance within recently excavated slopes at the construction site of Hinkley Point C nuclear power *** from active seismic surveys indicate that the disturbance is primarily confined to 0.5 m from the excavated *** conjunction,passive monitoring is used to detected seismic events corresponding to fracturing on the cm-scale and event locations are in agreement with 0.5 m of disturbance into the rock *** suggests rock disturbance at this site is relatively low and occurred during and immediately after the excavation.A ratio of seismic velocities recorded before and after excavations are used to determine the disturbance parameter required for the Hoek eBrown rock failure criterion,and we assess that rock disturbance is low with the magnitude of the disturbance diminishing more quickly than expected into the excavated *** methods provide a low-cost and quick method to assess excavation related rock mass disturbance,

Background:We aimed to evaluate the medium-term efficacy of sleeve gastrectomy(SG)***-en-Y gastric bypass(RYGB)on remission of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAfLD)in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Methods:We identified severely obese patients[body mass index(BMI)>35 kg/m^(2)]with NAfLD(as defined by the Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery Study)and T2DM(as defined by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American College of Endocrinology)who underwent SG or RYGB in a single university surgical *** cohorts were match-paired and data were analysed after at least 3 years of follow *** key outcomes measured were:(I)the improvement of liver function tests and NAfLD markers;(II)glycemic control and insulin ***:Ninety-six patients were investigated;44(45.8%)were *** mean pre-operative BMI was 45.2 kg/m2 in the SG and 42.0 kg/m^(2) in the RYGB *** and RYGB both significantly reduced serum liver enzyme *** markers resolved 2 years after SG in all *** contrast,only 78%and 80%of patients achieved remission of NAfLD 2 and 3 years after RYBG *** procedures resulted in comparable rates of remission of ***:Bariatric surgery with SG may be preferable to RYGB for obese patients with NAfLD and T2DM based on the rates of remission of markers of these ***,our results need to be confirmed in prospective *** the metabolic effects of specific bariatric surgical procedures may facilitate the development of a personalised approach to weight-loss surgery.

We systematically investigate the magnetic properties of Cu4-xZnx(OH)6fBr using the neutron diffraction and muon spin rotation and relaxation(μSR) ***-diffraction measurements suggest that the longrange magnetic order and the orthorhombic nuclear structure in the x=0 sample can persist up to x=0.23 and 0.43,*** temperature dependence of the zero-field μSR spectra provides two characteristic temperatures,TA0 and Tλ,which are associated with the initial drop close to zero time and the long-time exponential decay of the muon relaxation,*** between TA0 and TM from previously reported magnetic-susceptibility measurements suggest that the former comes from the short-range interlayer-spin clusters that persist up to x=*** the other hand,the doping level where Tλ becomes zero is about 0.66,which is much higher than threshold of the long-range order,i.e.,~*** results suggest that the change in the nuclear structure may alter the spin dynamics of the kagome layers and a gapped quantum-spin-liquid state may exist above x=0.66 with the perfect kagome planes.
