Malaria Retinopathy among Under-Five Children with Severe and Uncomplicated Malaria in a Tertiary Health Institution in Southwest Nigeria: A Comparative Study

Introduction: Malaria retinopathy refers to retinal abnormalities unique to malaria resulting from prolonged parasitization by Plasmodium falciparum. Identifying these features and treating them promptly could prevent lethal complications of malaria. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify and compare retinal findings in severe and uncomplicated malaria. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 260 subjects was equally divided into two groups of severe and uncomplicated malaria. Direct ophthalmoscopy was done at recruitment for all subjects. Information on sociodemographics, physical examination, nutritional status, and retinal abnormalities were recorded. A p-value Results: There were 141 (54.2%) males and 70 (26.9%) aged between 13 - 24 months. Severe anaemia, multiple convulsions, prostration, and cerebral malaria were the predominant forms of severe malaria. Twenty-three (17.7%) subjects with severe malaria and none with uncomplicated malaria had retinopathy. Retinal whitening (17.7%), vessel changes (16.2%), and retinal haemorrhages (5.4%) were the major forms of retinopathy. Retinopathy occurred in 43.8% of those with cerebral malaria. Retinal whitening and vessel changes were significantly associated with multiple convulsions, cerebral malaria, and metabolic acidosis;retinal haemorrhage was associated with cerebral malaria and haemoglobinuria (p = 0.022) and vessel changes with hypoglycaemia (p = 0.037). Cerebral malaria was an independent predictor of retinal whitening (p = 0.004) and vessel changes (p = 0.008) while haemoglobinuria was an independent predictor of retinal haemorrhages (p = 0.007). Conclusion: Ophthalmoscopy is an important examination in children with severe malaria which could assist in early detection and with prompt treatment, reduce morbidities and mortalities.

Development of Optimum Operating Conditions for Quality Attributes in Deep-Fat Frying of Dodo Produced from Plantain Using Response Surface Methodology

Response surface methodology involving historical data design has been successfully developed with the aim of predicting optimum operating conditions for dodo fried from plantain. Frying temperature and time were 150, 160, 170, 180 and 190°C and 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 min respectively. The parameters analyzed included moisture content, oil content, texture and change in colour. The fitted functions were optimized for moisture content, oil content, texture and change in colour in order to obtain a product with the acceptable quality attributes. Frying conditions had significant (p R2) of the generated models ranged from 0.91 to 0.99. Optimum frying condition was 177.51°C for 2.10 min. This gave 14.16% moisture content, 1.54% oil content, 2.93 N texture and 40.89 change in colour. Desirability of 0.7 was obtained for optimum conditions. Therefore, the estimated response surface model can be used to optimize the frying process of dodo fried from plantain.

Optimum Development of a Saturated Oil Field

This project investigated the potential optimal development strategy for a saturated reservoir, with a gas cap. It assessed the viability of three production methods—solution gas drive (primary depletion), water flooding and gas injection, using varying injector well numbers. This project also undertook sensitivity analysis in the field, concluding that the development of another appraisal well would vastly improve the accuracy of NPV calculation. Furthermore, this project ascertained an optimized recovery method, based on numerical production simulations and economic modelling, of initial solution gas drive recovery, until reservoir pressure equals the bubble point pressure, at which point three water flooding injectors should be employed, developed at six-month intervals to maximise production while limiting CAPEX and OPEX as much as possible.

Propranolol-Induced Epistaxis in a Woman with Multiple Obstetric Complications: Case Report

Epistaxis is a common complaint which is rarely life-threatening, as most cases are self-limited and as such unreported. However, it may be a significant cause for concern if it becomes recurrent. Although a number of medications including topical antihistamines and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are known aetiological factors for epistaxis due to their antiplatelet effects, beta blockers are not being widely reported as a possible cause. This report presents the case of a 34-year-old G2P0+1, who was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in pregnancy and subsequently reported epistaxis twice at different occasion and different hospital settings when propranolol was introduced for her treatment, with resolution of epistaxis after withdrawal of propranolol. The report aims to highlight and sensitize physicians to the possible risk of bleeding in patients placed on beta blockers especially propranolol for a wide range of medical condition due to its thrombocytopathic effect.

The most important components of electrical vehicles are the battery and the related cooling *** subsystems play a major role in determining the overall electric vehicle *** this study,a novel cooling system with fluid in the battery cell is proposed,by which the energy storage system can be optimized through control of the temperature of the batteries.A sensitivity analysis is conducted considering the maximum temperature,the heat rate,the coolant temperature,and the geometry of the *** numerical simulations show that the parameters for the trapezoidal compartment have an impact on the thermal performance of *** optimal geometry is proposed *** is concluded that for high values of Reynolds number for which the flow becomes turbulent,a decrease in the battery temperature can be obtained thereby avoiding thermal stresses.

Background: Exposure to plastic fumes can lead to severe occupational hazards due to inhalation, ingestion or direct contact wide variety of potentially harmful by-products during the manufacturing and burning of plastics. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of respiratory symptoms in plastic factory workers, evaluate the respiratory function of plastic factory workers and the association between respiratory symptoms and the duration of employment. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study done among plastic factory workers. Using a random sampling technique, 190 individuals (95 subjects and 95 control) above 18 years of age were recruited. Data were obtained with a validated questionnaire and Spirometry was done. Result: The mean age of the study group and control were 30.27 ± 7.38 and 25.92 ± 4.63 respectively (t = 4.877;p Conclusion: Workplace exposure to plastic fumes can lead to development of respiratory symptoms and impaired pulmonary function.

The Study of the Antimicrobial Properties of Selected Engineering Materials’ Surfaces

This paper studies the antimicrobial activity of selected engineering materials surfaces at room and chill temperatures. The antimicrobial effects of selected materials surfaces were evaluated by dropping the test pieces into prepared cultures of Bacillus spp, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aereus isolated from fruits, animal feaces and natural environment respectively. Bacteria count obtained after 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240 and 300 minutes at room temperature and chill condition was taken and compared with their initial count. The amount of live bacteria drops by several orders of magnitude, to zero, on metallic copper and brass within 30 to 300 minutes in both room and chill conditions. In contrast, no reduction is seen in the number of colonies of live bacteria on plastics, ceramic and stainless steel in both room and chill conditions. These results suggest that the selection of metallic copper and brass for touch surfaces in hospitals, surfaces exposed to fruit processing and household utensils can materially assist in reducing bacterial contamination, which should lead to a reduction in the transmission of infectious organisms.

This study comprehensively evaluates the integration and effectiveness of green mining technologies within the mining sector,specifically focusing on mitigating the environmental impact of traditional mining *** primary goal is to establish a sustainable mining model that significantly reduces energy consumption and minimizes ecological *** achieve this,the study employs a mixed-method approach,integrating quantitative data analysis from monitored mining sites and qualitative insights from industry *** parameters include energy consumption,greenhouse gas emissions,and reductions in chemical *** findings reveal that effective integration of green mining technologies leads to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions,lower energy consumption,and improved waste management compared to traditional ***,the use of electric vehicles and renewable energy sources in mining operations has resulted in decreased carbon emissions and energy usage across studied *** research concludes that green mining practices,when supported by robust technological integration and regulatory frameworks,not only enhance environmental sustainability but also boost economic efficiency within the mining *** study recommends increased investment in the research and development of green technologies and calls for tighter regulatory oversight to ensure the widespread adoption and optimization of these practices.

Introduction: Africa was noted as a challenging place for allied health care professions including occupational therapy. Those challenges include promotion of occupational therapy and educational program. The University of Rwanda started the occupational therapy training program in 2014 with support of different stakeholders such as Humanity & Inclusion (HI), Rwanda. Aim: This study aimed to explore the contribution of different stakeholders in the development of occupational therapy programs and impact on the profession in Rwanda. Methods: A survey and mixed method of qualitative and quantitative approach was used. Client satisfaction questionnaire, semi-structured self-generated questionnaire were administered to the participants. Results: The majority of occupational therapists were between 20 and 30 years old and only half of the entire population were employed. Majority of the involved Universities excellently achieved their responsibilities. However, few of them reported to have achieved only 50% of their responsibilities. Other contributors like lecturers reported to have excellently achieved their duties while others reported to have achieved only 50%. Non-Governmental Organizations reported to contribute to enough level however there were some organizations contributed to the lowest level below 50%. The client receiving the Occupational Therapy services showed that they are very satisfied at the level of 73.5%, satisfied at 59% and not all satisfied at 20%. Conclusion: This study concluded that there is need for various stakeholders’ contributions, and a need for further study to explore the impact of occupational therapy profession in rehabilitation healthcare system of Rwanda.
