Modeling and Forecasting of SARS CoV-2 Cases in Sierra Leone

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS CoV-2) has been a global threat spreading in Sierra Leone, and many studies are being conducted using various Statistical models to predict the probable evolution of this pandemic. In this paper, we use the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model with the aim of forecasting the cumulative confirmed cases of SARS CoV-2 in Sierra Leone. The Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) was applied to the training data as a criterion method to select the best model. In addition, the statistical measure RMSE and MAPE were utilized for testing this data, and the model with the minimum RMSE and MAPE was selected for future forecasting. ARIMA (3, 2, 1) was confirmed to be the optimal model based on the lowest AIC value. This model was then applied to study the trend of SARS CoV-2 from 1st February 2022 to 30th February 2022. The result shows that incidence of SARS CoV-2 from 1st February 2022 to 30th February 2022, increasing growth steep in Sierra Leone (7718.629, 95% confidence limit of 6785.985 - 8651.274).

This study aimed to investigate the serological characteristics of Ebola virus(EBOV) infection during the late phase of the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone. In total, 877 blood samples from 694 suspected Ebola virus disease(EVD) cases assessed from March to December 2015, were analyzed via real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) for viral RNA and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) and Luminex to detect antibodies against EBOV. Viral load and EBOV-specific IgM/IgG titers displayed a declining trend during March to December 2015. Viral RNA load decreased rapidly at earlier stages after disease onset, while EBOV-specific IgM and IgG still persisted in 58.1%(18/31) and 93.5%(29/31) of the confirmed EVD patients and in 3.8%(25/663) and 17.8%(118/663) of the RNA-negative suspected patients in the later phase, respectively. Dynamic analysis of longitudinally collected samples from eight EVD patients revealed typically reversed trends of declining viral load and increasing IgM and/or IgG titers in response to the EBOV *** present results indicate that certain populations of Sierra Leone developed immunity to an EBOV infection in the late phase of the outbreak, providing novel insights into the risk assessment of EBOV infections among human populations.

Background:The 2014-2016 Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa was the largest outbreak of Ebola virus disease(EVD)in *** the influence of other prevalent diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome(HIV/AIDS)will help improve treatment and supportive care of patients with *** presentation:We examined HIV and hepatitis C virus(HCV)antibody prevalence among suspected EVD cases from the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Biological Safety Laboratory during the epidemic in Sierra *** and HCV antibodies were tested in 678 EVD-negative samples by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.A high HIV prevalence(17.6%)and low HCV prevalence(0.22%)were observed among the suspected ***,we found decreased HIV positive rates among the suspected cases over the course of the *** suggests a potentially beneficial effect of an improved public health system after assistance from the World Health Organization and other international aid ***:This EVD epidemic had a considerable impact on the public health system and influenced the prevalence of HIV found among suspected cases in Sierra Leone,but also provided an opportunity to establish a better surveillance network for infectious diseases.

The onsite next generation sequencing(NGS)of Ebola virus(EBOV)genomes during the 2013–2016 Ebola epidemic in Western Africa provides an opportunity to trace the origin,transmission,and evolution of this ***,we have diagnosed a cohort of EBOV patients in Sierra Leone in 2015,during the late phase of the *** surviving EBOV patients had a recovery process characterized by decreasing viremia,fever,and biochemical *** genomes sequenced through the longitudinal blood samples of these patients showed dynamic intra-host substitutions of the virus during acute infection,including the previously described short stretches of 13 serial TNC ***,within individual patients,samples collected during the early phase of infection possessed Ts at these nucleotide sites,whereas they were replaced by Cs in samples collected in the later phase,suggesting that these short stretches of TNC mutations could emerge *** addition,up to a total of 35 nucleotide sites spanning the EBOV genome were mutated *** study showed the dynamic intra-host adaptation of EBOV during patient recovery and gave more insight into the complex EBOV-host interactions.

Cassava Groundnut Intercropping: A Sustainable Land Management Practice for Increasing Crop Productivity and Organic Carbon Stock on Smallholder Farms

Cassava-groundnut intercropping is not a common practice among smallholder farmers in Sierra Leone even though both crops are well suited for intercropping. On-farm trials were conducted in three locations (Bai Largor, Bassah, and Njala Kanima) in the Moyamba district during the 2021 cropping season to investigate the efficacy of cassava-groundnut intercropping for increasing crop productivity and soil organic carbon stock on smallholder farms in the Moyamba district, Southern Sierra Leone. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design in three replications with treatments of sole groundnut, sole cassava and cassava-groundnut intercropping. Data on the yield and yield components of cassava and groundnut were analysed using the PROC MIXED procedure of SAS 9.4 and means were compared using the standard error of difference (SED). The above-ground biomass, number of roots per plant, and fresh root yield of cassava were not significantly (p > 0.05) affected by the cassava-based cropping system. Averaged across locations, intercropping cassava with groundnut decreased the above-ground biomass, the number of roots per plant, and fresh root yield of cassava by 17%, 11%, and 17%, respectively. The above-ground biomass, number of pods per plant and fresh pod yield of groundnut were significantly (p 1), the highest net revenue and benefit-cost ratio. The benefit-cost ratio was also favourable for the sole cassava (BCR > 1) but not favourable for the sole groundnut (BCR < 1). Averaged across locations, intercropping cassava with groundnut increased the benefit-cost ratio by 121% and 13% when compared to the sole groundnut and sole cassava. In the event of a 40% yield loss for the cassava and groundnut, the benefit-cost ratio was favourable (1.12) only for the cassava groundnut intercropping system. Genetic and Agronomic Parameter Estimates of Growth, Yield and Related Traits of Maize (Zea mays L.) under Different Rates of Nitrogen Fertilization

This study evaluated the genetic and agronomic parameter estimates of maize under different nitrogen rates. The trial was established at the Njala Agricultural Research Centre experimental site during 2021 and 2022 in a split block design with three maize varieties (IWCD2, 2009EVDT, and DMR-ESR-Yellow) and seven nitrogen (0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 kg∙N∙ha−1) rates. Findings showed that cob diameter and anthesis silking time (ASI) had intermediate heritability, ASI had high genetic advance, ASI and grain yield had high genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), while traits with high phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were plant height, ASI, grain yield, number of kernel per cob, number of kernel rows, ear length, and ear height. The PCV values were higher than GCV, indicating the influence of the environment in the studied traits. Nitrogen rates and variety significantly (p −1 plots exhibiting the lowest and highest grain yields of 1238 kg∙ha−1 and 2098 kg∙ha−1, respectively. Variety and nitrogen effects on partial factor productivity (PFPN), agronomic efficiency (AEN), net returns (NR), value cost ratio (VCR) and marginal return (MR) indicated that these parameters were significantly affected (p N (41.3 kg grain kg−1∙N) and AEN (29.4 kg grain kg−1∙N) were obtained in the 30 kg∙N∙ha−1 plots, while the highest VCR (2.8) and MR (SLL 1.8 SLL−1 spent on N) were obtained in the 180 kg∙N∙ha−1.
