Characterization of aerodynamic performance of wind-lens turbine using high-fidelity CFD simulations

Wind-lens turbines(WLTs)exhibit the prospect of a higher output power and more suitability for urban areas in comparison to bare wind turbines.The wind-lens typically comprises a diffuser shroud coupled with a flange appended to the exit periphery of the shroud.Wind-lenses can boost the velocity of the incoming wind through the turbine rotor owing to the creation of a lowpressure zone downstream the flanged diffuser.In this paper,the aerodynamic performance of the wind-lens is computationally assessed using high-fidelity transient CFD simulations for shrouds with different profiles,aiming to assess the effect of change of some design parameters such as length,area ratio and flange height of the diffuser shroud on the power augmentation.The power coefficient(Cp)is calculated by solving the URANS equations with the aid of the SST k–ωmodel.Furthermore,comparisons with experimental data for validation are accomplished to prove that the proposed methodology could be able to precisely predict the aerodynamic behavior of the windlens turbine.The results affirm that wind-lens with cycloidal profile yield an augmentation of about 58%increase in power coefficient compared to bare wind turbine of the same rotor swept-area.It is also emphasized that diffusers(cycloid type)of small length could achieve a twice increase in power coefficient while maintaining large flange heights.

BACKGROUND:Monkeypox(mpox) is a viral infection that is primarily endemic to countries in Africa,but large outbreaks outside of Africa have been historically rare.In June 2022,mpox began to spread across Europe and North America,causing the World Health Organization(WHO) to declare mpox a public health emergency of international concern.This article aims to review clinical presentation,diagnosis,and prevention and treatment strategies on mpox,providing the basic knowledge for prevention and control for emergency providers.METHODS:We conducted a review of the literature using PubMed and SCOPUS databases from their beginnings to the end of July 2023.The inclusion criteria were studies on adult patients focusing on emerging infections that described an approach to a public health emergency of international concern,systematic reviews,clinical guidelines,and retrospective studies.Studies that were not published in English were excluded.RESULTS:We included 50 studies in this review.The initial symptoms of mpox are non-specific:fever,malaise,myalgias,and sore throat.Rash,a common presentation of mpox,usually occurs 2–4 weeks after the prodrome,but the presence of lymphadenopathy may distinguish mpox from other infections from the Poxviridae family.Life-threatening complications such as pneumonia,sepsis,encephalitis,myocarditis,and death can occur.There are documented co-occurrences of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections that can worsen morbidity.CONCLUSION:The initial presentation of mpox is non-specific.The preferred treatment included tecovirimat in patients with severe illness or at high risk of developing severe disease and vaccination with two doses of JYNNEOS.However,careful history and physical examination can raise the clinicians’ suspicion and point toward a prompt diagnosis.There are diff erent modalities to prevent and treat mpox infection.

Chromium adsorption on surface activated biochar made from tannery liming sludge:A waste-to-wealth approach

In a beamhouse,liming plays a key role in the removal of hair/wool and epidermis,but problems are created when waste liming sludge is discharged to the environment.The treatment of tannery wastewater is another major challenge to the industry.In this study,thermally-activated biochars derived from liming sludge were studied for their effective adsorption of chromium(Cr)from the tannery wastewater.The thermally activated biochars(B500,B550,B600,and B650)were prepared at different temperatures from the liming sludge.Their characteristics before and after the treatment were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy,Bru-nauer-Emmett-Teller,and scanning electron microscopy analyses.The related functional groups(C-H,O-H,C-N,and=C-O)and chromium adsorption capacity were determined according to the surface morphology,element contents(C,O,Ca,Na,Al,Mg,and Si),surface area(5.8-9.2 m^(2)/g),pore size(5.22-5.53 nm),and particle size(652-1034 nm)of the experimental biochars.The biochar originated at 600°C from the tannery liming sludge(B600)had a greater surface area with a chromium adsorption capacity of 99.8%in comparison to B500,B550,and B650 biochars.This study developed an innovative way of utilizing liming sludge waste to minimize the pollution load and wastewater treatment cost in the tannery industry.

Plants in their natural environment are constantly subjected to various abiotic and biotic stressors and,therefore,have developed several defense mechanisms to maintain fitness.Stress responses are intricate and require various physiological,biochemical,and cellular changes in plants.The reaction mechanisms in plants subjected to drought,salinity,or heat stress alone have been explained in numerous studies.However,the field conditions are significantly different from the controlled laboratory conditions.In the field,crops or plants are simultaneously exposed to two or more abiotic and/or biotic stress conditions,such as a combination of salinity and heat,drought and cold,or any of the abiotic stresses combined with pathogen infection.Studies have shown that plants’reactions to combinations of more than two stress factors are distinct and cannot be explicitly deduced from their responses to different stresses when applied separately.Therefore,additional research is needed to understand the complete mechanism of plant responses to stress by analyzing data between single stress and multiple stress responses.This review aims to provide an overview of current research on plant responses to a combination of various stress conditions and their influence on the metabolic,transcriptional,and physiological characteristics of plants.

Kaiy(medieval cautery)is an ancient method of heat therapy in traditional Persian medicine(TPM).Some of its important applications have been neglected during the medical revolution.Meanwhile,different treatment modalities that incorporate heat,including moxibustion,have progressed in traditional Chinese medicine.In this study,we reviewed the main TPM textbooks that were written specifically in the field of kaiy.We considered the traditional teachings in the context of contemporary information,gathered from the scientific literature about moxibustion and modern cauterization.Some surgical therapeutic indications of kaiy(e.g.,debridement and coagulative procedures)have been advanced by the innovation of electro-cauterization.However,those therapeutic applications that were based on the TPM humoral theory for relieving body coldness or myofascial pains—which are similar to moxibustion usages—have not received the same attention.Apart from the broad similarities of kaiy and moxibustion as thermal therapies with similar indications,there is a striking correspondence between kaiy point mapping and acupoints.Therefore,further research on different kaiy aspects is recommended.

The World Health Organization(WHO)refers to the 2019 new coronavirus epidemic as COVID-19,and it has caused an unprecedented global crisis for several nations.Nearly every country around the globe is now very concerned about the effects of the COVID-19 outbreaks,which were previously only experienced by Chinese residents.Most of these nations are now under a partial or complete state of lockdown due to the lack of resources needed to combat the COVID-19 epidemic and the concern about overstretched healthcare systems.Every time the pandemic surprises them by providing new values for various parameters,all the connected research groups strive to understand the behavior of the pandemic to determine when it will stop.The prediction models in this research were created using deep neural networks and Decision Trees(DT).DT employs the support vector machine method,which predicts the transition from an initial dataset to actual figures using a function trained on a model.Extended short-term memory networks(LSTMs)are a special sort of recurrent neural network(RNN)that can pick up on long-term dependencies.As an added bonus,it is helpful when the neural network can both recall current events and recall past events,resulting in an accurate prediction for COVID-19.We provided a solid foundation for intelligent healthcare by devising an intelligence COVID-19 monitoring framework.We developed a data analysis methodology,including data preparation and dataset splitting.We examine two popular algorithms,LSTM and Decision tree on the official datasets.Moreover,we have analysed the effectiveness of deep learning and machine learning methods to predict the scale of the pandemic.Key issues and challenges are discussed for future improvement.It is expected that the results these methods provide for the Health Scenario would be reliable and credible.

Data Trusts are an important emerging approach to enabling the much wider sharing of data from many different sources and for many different purposes,backed by the confidence of clear and unambiguous data governance.Data Trusts combine the technical infrastructure for sharing data with the governance framework of a legal trust.The concept of a data Trust applied specifically to spatial data offers significant opportunities for new and future applications,addressing some longstanding barriers to data sharing,such as location privacy and data sovereignty.This paper introduces and explores the concept of a‘spatial data Trust’by identifying and explaining the key functions and characteristics required to underpin a data Trust for spatial data.The work identifiesfive key features of spatial data Trusts that demand specific attention and connects these features to a history of relevant work in thefield,including spatial data infrastructures(SDIs),location privacy,and spatial data quality.The conclusions identify several key strands of research for the future development of this rapidly emerging framework for spatial data sharing.

Cellulose Nanocrystal from Washingtonia Fibre and Its Characterization

Cellulose nanocrystal(CNC)is a biomaterial derived from plant lignocellulosic components,widely applied in various industrial fields.Concurrently,with the growth of awareness in developing green nanomaterial,the explored Washingtonia fibre could be alternative biomass for obtaining CNC products.In the present work,different acid concentrations of 5%,15%,and 25%hydrochloric solutions were employed to produce CNCs from Washingtonia fibre.With the chemical treatments,the yield of the CNC product was successfully retained at 21.6%-25.1%.Individually separated and needle-shaped CNC particles could be observed under the microscopic viewing with the increased acid concentrations.From elemental analysis,a relatively pure cellulose compartment was produced for all CNC samples.The zeta potential values between-10 to-16 mV proved that each nanoparticle sample possessed dispersion ability within an aqueous solution.Meanwhile,the degree of crystallinity and the thermal behavior of CNCs were enhanced with the increased acidic concentrations.Hence,the isolated CNCs(with 15%)from Washingtonia fibre lead a CNC with the highest aspect ratio(30).This parameter is so important that these structures show empowering points of view as nanomaterials for reinforced polymer composites,and it could be a reliable nano-filler for the composite fabrication process in the future.

Spatial correlation of pit and mound topography with canopy gaps in a virgin mixed beech forest, northern Iran

In a reserved forest parcel in a virgin eastern Hyrcanian mixed beech forest,80 ha was surveyed to determine the pit and mound topography,canopy gaps and dead trees.The aim was to investigate the spatial patterns and correlation of pit and mound features with canopy gaps.Seventy-five canopy gaps and 61 pit and mound features were identified.The univariate first order nearest neighbor(R_(CE))and bivariate second order test(Ripley’s K)statistic were applied.R_(CE) statistics highlighted a general aggregation pattern for canopy gaps and pits and mounds,while pits and mounds alone were more clumped.Distances between canopy gaps were 130 m average,whereas distances between pit and mound features and dead trees were 60 and 78 m,respectively.Spatial positive correlation of canopy gaps with pits and mounds were observed with all distances.The result of spatial correlations between canopy gaps with pits and mounds confirmed that windthrows cause micro successions in fallen tree ecosystem-scale correlated with gap phase dynamics in the forest community-scale.

An Intelligent Forecasting Model for Disease Prediction Using Stack Ensembling Approach

This research work proposes a new stack-based generalization ensemble model to forecast the number of incidences of conjunctivitis disease.In addition to forecasting the occurrences of conjunctivitis incidences,the proposed model also improves performance by using the ensemble model.Weekly rate of acute Conjunctivitis per 1000 for Hong Kong is collected for the duration of the first week of January 2010 to the last week of December 2019.Pre-processing techniques such as imputation of missing values and logarithmic transformation are applied to pre-process the data sets.A stacked generalization ensemble model based on Auto-ARIMA(Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average),NNAR(Neural Network Autoregression),ETS(Exponential Smoothing),HW(Holt Winter)is proposed and applied on the dataset.Predictive analysis is conducted on the collected dataset of conjunctivitis disease,and further compared for different performance measures.The result shows that the RMSE(Root Mean Square Error),MAE(Mean Absolute Error),MAPE(Mean Absolute Percentage Error),ACF1(Auto Correlation Function)of the proposed ensemble is decreased significantly.Considering the RMSE,for instance,error values are reduced by 39.23%,9.13%,20.42%,and 17.13%in comparison to Auto-ARIMA,NAR,ETS,and HW model respectively.This research concludes that the accuracy of the forecasting of diseases can be significantly increased by applying the proposed stack generalization ensemble model as it minimizes the prediction error and hence provides better prediction trends as compared to Auto-ARIMA,NAR,ETS,and HW model applied discretely.
