BACKGROUND The importance of the neuronal microenvironment has been recently highlighted in gut region-specific diabetic enteric neuropathy. Regionally distinct thickening of endothelial basement membrane(BM) of intestinal capillaries supplying the myenteric ganglia coincide with neuronal damage in different intestinal segments. Accelerated synthesis of matrix molecules and reduced degradation of matrix components may also contribute to the imbalance of extracellular matrix dynamics resulting in BM thickening. Among the matrix degrading proteinases, matrix metalloproteinase 9(MMp9) and its tissue inhibitor(TIMp1) are essential in regulating extracellular matrix *** To evaluate the intestinal segment-specific effects of diabetes and insulin replacement on ganglionic BM thickness, MMp9 and TIMp1 *** Ten weeks after the onset of hyperglycaemia gut segments were taken from the duodenum and ileum of streptozotocin-induced diabetic, insulin-treated diabetic and sex-and age-matched control rats. The thickness of BM surrounding myenteric ganglia was measured by electron microscopic morphometry. Wholemount preparations of myenteric plexus were prepared from the different gut regions for MMp9/TIMp1 double-labelling fluorescent immunohistochemistry. post-embedding immunogold electron microscopy was applied on ultrathin sections to evaluate the MMp9 and TIMp1 expression in myenteric ganglia and their microenvironment from different gut segments and conditions. The MMp9 and TIMp1 messenger ribonucleic acid(m RNA) level was measured by quantitative polymerase chain *** Ten weeks after the onset of hyperglycaemia, the ganglionic BM was significantly thickened in the diabetic ileum, while it remained intact in the duodenum. The immediate insulin treatment prevented the diabetes-related thickening of the BM surrounding the ileal myenteric ganglia. Methylphenidate Misuse in Adults: Survey of 414 primary Care physicians in Germany and Comparison with the Literature

Objectives: This paper deals with the methylphenidate (MpH) misuse by adults in Germany. Results of a survey among primary care physicians/internists have been supplemented by a comparison with the literature. Methods: In the period from October 5-20, 2015, a survey was sent to 414 primary care physicians/internists in four German cities (n = 10 were undeliverable). The response rate was 58% (n = 235). 34 original works on MpH abuse worldwide were found in the literature and are used in the analysis of the present data situation. The literature published before November 9, 2015 is considered in this paper. Results: 14% of the doctors who took part in the survey said that they had been asked for MpH prescriptions without any medical indication. The most frequent reason given for the request (42%) was adult attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) not verified by documents. According to the comparison with the literature, university students had a lifetime prevalence of MpH misuse ranging from 0.8% to 16.6% and school children had a misuse rate of 4.0%. In the civilian US population, the misuse rate was 4.2%. Among patients in possession of a current MpH prescription due to a diagnosis, the lifetime prevalence was 29% and among adolescents with suspected alcohol and/or drug problems 20%. Conclusions: MpH misuse is a major problem which has not been studied sufficiently. MpH misuse not only plays a role in the field of psychiatry, but also in other disciplines. Misuse particularly following a therapeutic prescription should be taken into account.

We reported here the first known case of natural infection of a lion(panthera leo-Linnaeus,1738) with Leishmania(Leithmania) chagasi(***) in *** specimen was created by a circus handler in the state of mato Grosso and was donated to the zoological park of the Federal University of mato *** by *** was detected using a pCR-RFLp *** was known that the domestic felids can act as reservoir of infection of *** in endemic areas, making it important that studies demonstrate their participation in the epidemiological chain. We demonstrate in this work that wild animals can have an important role in the epidemiological chain and must be considered in order to plan methods of control of this zoonosis.

Background:It remains unclear if the vascular and connective tissue structures of primary and metastatic tumors are intrinsically determined or whether these characteristics are defined by the host *** we examined the microanatomical steps of vasculature and connective tissue development of C38 colon carcinoma in different ***:Tumors produced in mice at five different locations(the cecal wall,skin,liver,lung,and brain)were ana-lyzed using fluorescent immunohistochemistry,electron microscopy and quantitative real-time polymerase chain ***:We found that in the cecal wall,skin,liver,and lung,resident fibroblasts differentiate into collagenous matrix-producing myofibroblasts at the tumor *** activated fibroblasts together with the produced matrix were incorporated by the *** connective tissue development culminated in the appearance of intratumoral tissue columns(centrally located single microvessels embedded in connective tissue and smooth muscle actin-expressing myofibroblasts surrounded by basement membrane).Conversely,in the brain(which lacks fibroblasts),C38 metasta-ses only induced the development of vascularized desmoplastic tissue columns when the growing tumor reached the fibroblast-containing ***:Our data suggest that the desmoplastic host tissue response is induced by tumor-derived fibrogenic molecules acting on host tissue *** concluded that not only the host tissue characteristics but also the tumor-derived fibrogenic signals determine the vascular and connective tissue structure of tumors.

Microbiological biostimulant promotes rooting of olive cuttings

Crohn's disease environmental factors in the developing world: A case-control study in a statewide catchment area in Brazil

AIM To identify environmental risk factors associated with the development of Crohn's disease(CD) in order to reassess the hygiene *** A hospital-based, case-control study was carried out with CD patients(n = 145) and controls(n = 163)representing a socioeconomically diverse statewide catchment area in Brazil. Controls were recruited from caregivers of patients seen in different outpatient clinics at the same hospital. A multi-item survey with 94 questions regarding family history of CD, perinatal and childhood circumstances, living conditions, tobacco use and familial socioeconomic status was carried out by interviewers. RESULTS On the univariate analysis, predictive variables for CD included being male, under age of 40, a high education level, urban dweller, smaller family size, exposure to enteric pathogens and user of treated water(p riate analysis, variables significantly associated with CD were male gender(OR = 2.09), under age 40(OR = 3.10), white(OR = 2.32), from a small family in childhood(OR = 2.34) and adulthood(OR = 3.02), absence of viral infections in childhood(OR = 2.23), exposure to enteric pathogens(OR = 2.41), having had an appendectomy(OR = 2.47) and prior or current smoker(OR = 2.83/1.12). CONCLUSION Most variables supporting the "hygiene hypothesis" are associated with the development of CD but are not independent predictors of the diagnosis.

Facility managers＇ perceptions on building performance assessment

During the operational phase, building performance may decrease in various areas, so that the end users' requirements are no longer met. Consequently, indicators are useful to assess and improve the performance of existing buildings. In this study, we carried out a literature review and organized a focus group with facility management experts to gather and analyze facility managers' perceptions on operational indicators that could be used to assess the performance of buildings. The results revealed that the core indicators used to measure a building's operational performance are related to safety and assets working properly, health and comfort, space functionality,and energy performance. The findings also revealed that these indicators can be obtained from three sources: a)facility managers/operators, who carry out corrective maintenance and perform technical inspections, b) regular users, who report complaints and fill-in satisfaction questionnaires, and c) sporadic users, who also fill-in satisfaction questionnaires. These indicators and their sources can contribute to a better analysis of building performance and the definition of measures to improve performance during the operational phase of a building.

The Brazilian state of Acre has an extensive natural reserve of bamboo,making it one of the largest in loco gene *** aim of this study was to characterize the structure and genetic diversity of Guadua weberbaueri *** two populations,one native(FApB)and the other anthropized(FApBA),using ISSR *** results show that the FApB population exhibited higher values for all estimates of population ***,the FApBA population also showed high heterozygosity,corroborated by estimated gene flow(Nm=3.9)between the *** study of the association between Nei’s genetic distances and the geographic distances between the populations were significantly correlated(r=0.45,p=0.01),corroborated by the dendrogram revealing two distinct groups corresponding to the collection sites,without mixing classes between populations in the same *** for the coancestry coefficient,pairs of individuals in the first distance class were positive and significant,indicating that plants that are geographically closer share common alleles with a frequency greater than by chance,which means that there is a tendency that geographically closer individuals are *** presented similar genetic structure when the geographical distance between them was up to 56 m for FApB and up to 156 m for *** was concluded that anthropized environments exhibit less genetic diversity than native environments,inferring risks for species conservation if appropriate and planned management techniques are not adopted.

Novel agents and new therapeutic approaches for treatment of multiple myeloma

This review summarizes the therapeutic strategies and the drugs actually in development for the management of myeloma patients. Multiple myeloma is caused by the expansion of monoclonal plasma cells and secretion of M-protein(immunoglobulins, Bence Jones protein and free light chains). Multiple myeloma still remains an incurable disease with a high incidence rate in the elderly, despite the introduction of several new therapeutic agents(bortezomib, lenalidomide and thalidomide) which have changed its natural history. The high heterogeneity of this disease leads to large differences in clinical responses to treatments. Thus, the choice of the best treatment is a difficult issue. However, the introduction of new drugs has made it possible to achieve high response rates and good quality respons-es with long-term disease control. Interactions between tumor cells and their bone marrow microenvironment play a pivotal role in the development, maintenance, and progression of myeloma, inducing also drug resistance. These knowledges have improved treatment options, leading to the approval of new drugs which not only target the malignant cell itself, but also its microenvironment. These agents are in preclinical/early clinical evaluation and they appear to further improve disease control, but their use is still not approved outside of clinical trials.
