Relationship between apoptotic markers in semen from fertile men and demographic, hormonal and seminal characteristics

Apoptosis in the testis has two putative roles during normal spermatogenesis; limitation of the germ cell population to numbers that can be supported by the Sertoli cells, and, possibly, selective depletion of meiotic and postmeiotic abnormal germ cells. We investigated the demographic and biological correlates of the pro-apoptotic marker Fas and the anti-apoptotic marker Bcl-xL in sperm cells of fertile men. Six hundred and four men from Greenland, Poland and Ukraine were consecutively enrolled during their pregnant wife＇s antenatal visits. Semen analysis was performed as recommended by the World Health Organization. Immunofluorescence coupled to flow cytometry was utilized for detection of apoptotic markers in the sperm cell. DNA damage was assessed by flow cytometry using both the sperm chromatin structure assay （SCSA） and the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labelling （TUNEL） assay. The percentage of Fas-positive sperm cells was higher in men with high total sperm count （P〈O.01）, more motile sperms （P=-O.04） and fewer sperm head defects （P=-O.05）. These associations were consistent within and across study regions. Furthermore, testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone （FSH） and sexual hormone-binding globulin （SHBG） were significantly negatively correlated with Fas within and across regions as well. The data indicated no association between the anti-apoptotic Bcl-xL marker and semen or personal characteristics. The finding of Fas-positive sperm cells associated with better semen quality in a cohort of spouses of pregnant women seems different from previous data obtained in infertile men and warrants further investigation to clarify the biological significance of sperm apoptotic markers.

目的　提高对艾滋病 (AIDS)合并隐球菌脑膜炎的认识。方法　对赤道几内亚巴塔地区医院 18例AIDS合并隐球菌脑膜炎患者进行临床综合分析。结果　 18例AIDS合并隐球菌脑膜炎患者的临床主要表现为 :发热、剧烈头痛、极度乏力、肢体痛、脑膜刺激征及消瘦与脱水等。脑脊液 (CSF)培养均为新型隐球菌生长 ;涂片及隐球菌多糖荚膜抗原 (ELISA法 )检测的阳性率分别为 77 8% (14/ 18) ,94 4% (17/ 18)。结论　隐球菌脑膜炎为AIDS常见机会性感染及主要致死病因之一。

Dynamics of electrodeposition of tetraethylthioram disulphide(TETD) on pyrite surface

The electrode process of pyrite in diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) solution pH 11.4 was investigated by using cyclic voltammetry, potentiost atic and chronopotentiometry. Tetraethylthioram disulphide(TETD) was electrodepo sited on pyrite electrode surface as the electrode potential is higher than 0.2 V. The relationship of the current density caused by diffusion and reaction time can be ascertained as i =1/(9.08×10 -5 +4.77×10 -3 t 0.5 ) , and the diffusion coefficient of DDTC on pyrite surface is about 3.72×10 - 6 cm 2/s. At pH 11.4, the thickness of TETD adsorbed on pyr ite surface is about 1.63 molecule layer. The electrochemical dynamics equation of the reduction of TETD on pyrite surface is given as η =0.116-0.064log[1- ( t/τ ) 0.5 ]. The kinetic parameters were determined as follows: the ex change current density ( i 0) is 3.08 μA/cm 2; the transmission coeffi cient( α ) is 0.462.

Non-invasive home lung impedance monitoring in early post-acute heart failure discharge: Three case reports

BACKGROUND Patients discharged after hospitalization for acute heart failure(AHF) are frequently readmitted due to an incomplete decongestion, which is difficult to assess clinically. Recently, it has been shown that the use of a highly sensitive,non-invasive device measuring lung impedance(LI) reduces hospitalizations for heart failure(HF); it has also been shown that this device reduces the cardiovascular and all-cause mortality of stable HF patients when used in longterm out-patient follow-ups. The aim of these case series is to demonstrate the potential additive role of non-invasive home LI monitoring in the early postdischarge *** SUMMARY We present a case series of three patients who had performed daily LI measurements at home using the edema guard monitor(EGM) during 30 d after an episode of AHF. All patients had a history of chronic ischemic HF with a reduced ejection fraction and were hospitalized for 6–17 d. LI measurements were successfully made at home by patients with the help of their caregivers. The patients were carefully followed up by HF specialists who reacted to the values of LI measurements, blood pressure, heart rate and clinical symptoms. LI reduction was a more frequent trigger to medication adjustments compared to changes in symptoms or vital signs. Besides, LI dynamics closely tracked the use and dose of *** Our case series suggests non-invasive home LI monitoring with EGM to be a reliable and potentially useful tool for the early detection of congestion or dehydration and thus for the further successful stabilization of a HF patient after a worsening episode.

Experiences of Screening for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm—In and Out on Five Minutes

Background: The purpose of AAA screening is to prevent rupture and mortality. Screening for life-threatening diseases is a double-edged sword. The aim of this study is to describe 65-year-old men’s experiences of health related quality of life and anxiety after screening for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, and experiences of information and reasons for not participating. Methods: 368 men answered Short Form 36 (SF-36), and anxiety and depression scale (HAD). 72 telephone interviews were conducted with the participants and 77 with those who declined to take part in the screening programme. Results: The SF-36 domains of Physical Function and Role limitations due to emotional health problems were significantly better for men who had undergone screening compared to a matched population. Compared to non-smokers, smokers had lower values in the SF-36 domains of general health perceptions, social functioning, role limitations due to emotional health problems and mental health. 80% of patients did not experience any form of anxiety/panic in connection with the screening invitation. Of the men who did not participate, 56% stated that they would like to be screened or had already undergone the examination. Conclusion: The men who underwent the investigation were healthier in some of the SF-36 domains than the general population. The participants did not experience any great anxiety before the screening and despite the short duration of the examination.

Clinical cardiac regenerative studies in children

Although the incidence of pediatric heart failure is low, the mortality is relatively high, with severe clinical symptoms requiring repeated hospitalization or intensive care treatment in the surviving patients. Cardiac biopsy specimens have revealed a higher number of resident human cardiac progenitor cells, with greater proliferation and differentiation capacity, in the neonatal period as compared with adults, demonstrating the regeneration potential of the young heart, with rising interest in cardiac regeneration therapy in critically ill pediatric patients. We review here the available literature data, searching the MEDLINE, Google Scholar and EMBASE database for completed, and *** homepage for ongoing studies involving pediatric cardiac regeneration reports. Because of difficulties conducting randomized blinded clinical trials in pediatric patients, mostly case reports or cohort studies with a limited number of individuals have been published in the field of pediatric regenerative cardiology. The majority of pediatric autologous cell transplantations into the cardiac tissue have been performed in critically ill children with severe or terminal heart failure. Congenital heart disease, myocarditis, and idiopathic hypertrophic or dilated cardiomyopathy leading to congestive heart failure are some possible areas of interest for pediatric cardiac regeneration therapy. Autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells, progenitor cells, or cardiospheres have been applied either intracoronary or percutaneously intramyocardially in severely ill children, leading to a reported clinical benefit of cell-based cardiac therapies. In conclusion, compassionate use of autologous stem cell administration has led to at least short-term improvement in heart function and clinical stability in the majority of the critically ill pediatric patients.
