The fertility of human-altered soils,Anthrosols,developed from past settlement activities for crop production is scarcely *** study evaluated the fertility of Anthrosols developed from the 15th to mid-20th century AD settlement in Old Buipe,Savanna region,Ghana,to determine whether abandoned localities are suitable for arable *** activities enhanced the physical attributes of the Anthrosols:brown to dark brown intergrain fine soil,15%−35%organic matter,15%−30%potsherd,and 5%−15%charred *** Anthrosols were slightly acidic to neutral reactions(pH_([H_(2)O])5.67−6.83,pH_([cacl_(2)])5.83−6.95),high cation exchange capacity(CEC;18.77−45.31me/100 g),electric conductivity(EC=0.28−0.36 dS m^(−1)),accumulation,and distribution of organic C,total N,P,Mn,Cu,Zn,K,and Fe,and available P,K,Ca,Mg,S,Mn,Fe,Cu,and ***-available nutrients were comparatively higher than concentrations in non-anthropogenic *** level of releasability(bioavailable fractions of total concentrations)of P,K,Ca,Mn,Fe,Cu,and Zn partly compensates for low plant-available *** of chemical and physical properties of Anthrosols make them fertile for arable *** signatures of settlement activities are strong and can remain in soils for a long time,even under harsh environmental conditions.

Environmental mercury exposure, semen quality and reproductive hormones in Greenlandic Inuit and European men： a cross-sectional study

Several animal studies indicate that mercury is a male reproductive toxicant, but human studies are few and contradictory. We examined semen characteristics and serum levels of reproductive hormones in relation to environmental exposure to mercury. Blood and semen samples were collected from 529 male partners of pregnant women living in Greenland, Poland and Ukraine between May 2002 and February 2004. The median concentration of the total content of mercury in whole blood was 9.2 ng ml-1 in Greenland （0.2- 385.8 ng ml-1）, 1.0 ng m1-1 in Poland （0.2-6.4 ng ml-z） and 1.0 ng ml-I in Ukraine （0.2-4.9 ng ml-1）. We found a significantly positive association between the blood levels of mercury and serum concentration of inhibin B in men from Greenland （p=0.074, 95% confidence interval （CI）=0.021 to 0.126） and in an analysis including men from all three regions （p=0.067, 95% C1=0.024 to O. 110）. The association may be due to beneficial effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids （PUFAs）, which are contained in seafood and fish. No significant association （P〉O.05） was found between blood concentrations of mercury and any of the other measured semen characteristics （semen volume, total sperm count, sperm concentration, morphology and motility） and reproductive hormones （free androgen index {FAI）, follicle-stimulating hormone （FSH）, luteinizing hormone （LH）, testosterone and LH xtestosterone） in any region. In conclusion, the findings do not provide evidence that environmental mercury exposure in Greenlandic and European men with median whole blood concentration up to 10 ng m1^-1 has adverse effects on biomarkers of male reproductive health.

Research on a Dispersed Networked CAD/CAM System of Motorcycle

In order to improve competitive ability of market, mo torcycle enterprises, special the small and middle sized ones must use IT to org anize social resource and adopt effective production mode, namely the dispersed networked design and manufacturing (DNDM), which was put forward and proved to b e one of vitality production modes in recent years. In responding to the new pro duction mode of VMCE, a dispersed networked CAD/CAM system (DNCADMS) of motorcyc le products should be developed. The objective of this paper is to investigate a new design and manufacturing mode and technical environment of motorcycle produ ction based on the concept of the DNDM for the small and meddle sized motorcycle enterprises. Because there are various CAx software systems, including differen t kinds of isolated CD, CAD, CAE, CAPP, CAM, PDM, and so on, are used at differe nt stages of the life period of motorcycle products under heterogeneous environm ents, to build a DNCADMS of motorcycle with high performance, some key issues, n amely the architecture of the DNCADMS, the integration of the isolated CAx softw are systems (CAxs), the data communication and exchange between these isolated s ystems and the data share problem under the dispersed heterogeneous database env ironment, should be solved well. For this, the idea we propose is the combinatio n of Web, CORBA, STEP and Java, which provides an effective mechanism to support the integration of isolated CAxs, and support communication and interoperabilit y among CAx systems. Each isolated CAx has been encapsulated respectively by a c ontainer, which is implemented by the ORBs and the IDL of the COBRA technology s tandard, and managed by the application index server. Apoptosis in the testis has two putative roles during normal spermatogenesis; limitation of the germ cell population to numbers that can be supported by the Sertoli cells, and, possibly, selective depletion of meiotic and postmeiotic abnormal germ cells. We investigated the demographic and biological correlates of the pro-apoptotic marker Fas and the anti-apoptotic marker Bcl-xL in sperm cells of fertile men. Six hundred and four men from Greenland, Poland and Ukraine were consecutively enrolled during their pregnant wife＇s antenatal visits. Semen analysis was performed as recommended by the World Health Organization. Immunofluorescence coupled to flow cytometry was utilized for detection of apoptotic markers in the sperm cell. DNA damage was assessed by flow cytometry using both the sperm chromatin structure assay （SCSA） and the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labelling （TUNEL） assay. The percentage of Fas-positive sperm cells was higher in men with high total sperm count （P〈O.01）, more motile sperms （P=-O.04） and fewer sperm head defects （P=-O.05）. These associations were consistent within and across study regions. Furthermore, testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone （FSH） and sexual hormone-binding globulin （SHBG） were significantly negatively correlated with Fas within and across regions as well. The data indicated no association between the anti-apoptotic Bcl-xL marker and semen or personal characteristics. The finding of Fas-positive sperm cells associated with better semen quality in a cohort of spouses of pregnant women seems different from previous data obtained in infertile men and warrants further investigation to clarify the biological significance of sperm apoptotic markers.

Dynamics of electrodeposition of tetraethylthioram disulphide(TETD) on pyrite surface

The electrode process of pyrite in diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) solution pH 11.4 was investigated by using cyclic voltammetry, potentiost atic and chronopotentiometry. Tetraethylthioram disulphide(TETD) was electrodepo sited on pyrite electrode surface as the electrode potential is higher than 0.2 V. The relationship of the current density caused by diffusion and reaction time can be ascertained as i =1/(9.08×10 -5 +4.77×10 -3 t 0.5 ) , and the diffusion coefficient of DDTC on pyrite surface is about 3.72×10 - 6 cm 2/s. At pH 11.4, the thickness of TETD adsorbed on pyr ite surface is about 1.63 molecule layer. The electrochemical dynamics equation of the reduction of TETD on pyrite surface is given as η =0.116-0.064log[1- ( t/τ ) 0.5 ]. The kinetic parameters were determined as follows: the ex change current density ( i 0) is 3.08 μA/cm 2; the transmission coeffi cient( α ) is 0.462.
