Changes in the adult sex ratio of six duck species breeding populations over two decades

Despite all efforts,long-term changes in the adult sex ratios of breeding duck populations are still unclear;this uncertainty is especially true for male-bias populations,which are often under the scrutiny of researchers lacking convenient results for the active protection of endangered *** with male-bias populations are usually strongly affected by a decline in population size that leads to a higher extinction *** this study,we examined our long-term data of the abundance of breeding populations in six duck species(Mallard Anas platyrhynchos,Gadwall Mareca strepera,Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina,Common Pochard Aythya ferina,Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula,and Common Goldeneye Bucephala clangula)from fishponds in South Bohemia,Czechia,between 2004 and *** evidence was used to assess long-term changes in the adult sex ratio in these breeding populations and investigate the possible effects of the NAO index(North Atlantic Oscillation index)on them,indicating climate conditions in *** determined a long-term decrease of the proportion of females in the breeding season in two of the six examined species:Common Pochard and Red-crested Pochard,which is driven by the long-term increase in the number of males in contrast to the decreasing or stable number of females likely caused by different migration behaviours between females and *** the case of Common Pochard,in breeding populations,we estimated 60-65%of males in the early 2000s rising to 75-80%in the early ***,we establish no significant effects linked to climate conditions of the previous winter in these species as a crucial cause of the changes of the proportion of females in the breeding population.

For the first time,the mechanism of metal aluminum dissolution in NaF-ScF_(3) eutectic melts and the chemical interaction between the constituents of this mixture have been thoroughly studied by a combination of differential thermal analysis(DTA),high temperature and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR),and X-ray diffraction(XRD) coupled with the molecular dynamic *** formation of an insoluble Al_(3)Sc alloy in molten(NaF-ScF_(3))_(eut)system was proven,and the chemical mechanism of this aluminothermic Al_(3)Sc alloy production was *** ex situ examinations bring to light the formation of NaScF_4 and solid solution of Na_(3)(Al,Sc)F_(6) in cooled *** molecular dynamics calculations of the bath allow us to construct the structural model and to predict viscosity,density and electrical conductivity of the reagent melt to help to optimize the conditions of the alloy synthesis.

Is It about a Bicycle? A Posthumanist Perspective on the Role of Women’s Bicycles in WWII Resistance Movements

Background: Understanding the role of species identity in interactions among individuals is crucial for assessing the productivity and stability of mixed forests over time. However, there is limited knowledge concerning the variation in competitive effect and response of different species along climatic gradients. In this study, we investigated the importance of climate, tree size, and competition on the growth of three tree species: spruce(Picea abies), fir(Abies alba), and beech(Fagus sylvatica), and examined their competitive response and effect along a climatic ***: We selected 39 plots distributed across the European mountains with records of the position and growth of 5,759 individuals. For each target species, models relating tree growth to tree size, climate and competition were proposed. Competition was modelled using a neighbourhood competition index that considered the effects of inter-and intraspecific competition on target trees. Competitive responses and effects were related to *** methods and information theory were used to select the best ***: Our findings revealed that competition had a greater impact on target species growth than tree size or climate. Climate did influence the competitive effects of neighbouring species, but it did not affect the target species? response to competition. The strength of competitive effects varied along the gradient, contingent on the identity of the interacting species. When the target species exhibited an intermediate competitive effect relative to neighbouring species, both higher inter-than intraspecific competitive effects and competition reduction occurred along the gradient. The formation of amyloid fibrils from soluble proteins is a common form of self-assembly phenomenon that has fundamental connections with biological functions and human *** was converted from its soluble native state into highly organized amyloid *** treatment was used to break amyloid fibrils to fibrillar fragments–*** force microscopy and fluorescence microscopy was employed to characterize the morphology of the amyloid assemblies and neural cells–amyloid *** results demonstrate that prefibrillar intermediated and their mixture with proteins exhibit toxicity,although native proteins and fibrils appear to have no effect on number of *** findings confirm that innocuous hen lysozyme can be engineered to produce both cytotoxic fibrillar fragments and non-toxic mature amyloid *** work further strengthens the claim that amyloid conformation,and not the identity of the protein,is key to cellular toxicity and the underlying specific cell death mechanism.

The modification of amyloid fibrils cytotoxicity through exogenous nanomaterials is crucial to understand the processes controlling the role of protein aggregation in the related *** influence of nanoparticles on amyloid stability yields great interest due to the small size and high surface area-to-volume ratio of *** physico-chemical parameters play a role in the interaction of proteins and nanoparticles in solution,thus influencing the disaggregation of preformed *** have examined the influence of two kinds of metallic nanoparticles on lysozyme amyloid fibrils using a multi-technique approach and focalized their impact on cytotoxicity on human neuroblastoma cells(SH-SY5Y).In particular,fluorescence,infrared and circular dichroism spectroscopies,optical and atomic force microscopy experiments have been carried out;the results are analyzed to rationalize the effects of these complexes on neural cell *** is remarkable,that the fibrils in the presence of AuNPs,unlike fibrils alone or with AgNPs,do not generate a significant cytotoxic effect even at high concentration and an amyloid degradation effect is visible.

Concept of the integrative aspects of the forest ecosystem services with case study on recreation services assessment in Slovakia

Introduction:This paper presents basic information on the research,classification,and application of the functions of tree species and their communities(mainly forest)in *** main aim is a scientific assessment of acquired knowledge regarding the functional effects of forests under real ecological,forest management and socio-economic conditions from various regions in Slovakia;the most up-to-date findings concerning the ecology and economics of natural resources will be applied *** second part of the paper presents methodological possibilities for valuation of outdoor recreation in *** methods and methodological approaches suitable to a valuation of recreation based on various principles and criteria(preference and non-preference methods,cost-based methods,revenue-based methods,and direct and indirect methods)are analyzed.A practical application of one indirect preference method(travel cost method)is made to evaluate outdoor recreation in forests in *** and conclusions:A new classification system and a methodology of integrative utilization of forest functions for the forest ecosystem services are *** recreation in forests,besides recreational forests and areas,assumes the character of a public good:its use by individuals has some influence on utilization by other individuals,and single users cannot be excluded from its ***,some stimulation for its production is *** principle,there are no markets for these kinds of public goods and *** total value of outdoor recreation in forests in Slovakia amounted to€163.4 million;if opportunity time costs were included,this amounted to as much as€825.7 million.

Highly Functional Polyol Synthesis from Epoxidized Tall Oil Fatty Acids

In this work, free tall oil fatty acids were epoxidized with in-situ generated peroxyacetic acid. Reaction kineticsof epoxidation was investigated by oxirane content and iodine value titrimetric determination, as well as FTIRspectra analysis. A highly functional biobased polyol was synthesized by functionalizing epoxidized tall oilfatty acids with triethanolamine using Montmorillonite K10 as a catalyst. The obtained polyol was analyzed byFTIR and MALDI-TOF MS. The most common chemical and physical characteristics of obtained polyol weredetermined.
