E-jiao(Colla Corii Asini,CCA)has been widely used as a healthy food and Chinese medicine.Although authentic CCA is characterized by its typical sweet and neutral fragrance,its aroma components have been rarely investigated.This work investigated the aroma-active components and antioxidant activity of 19 CCAs from different geographical origins.CCA extracts obtained by simultaneous distillation and extraction were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS),gas chromatography-olfactometry(GC-O)and sensory analysis.The antioxidant activity of CCAs was determined by ABTS and DPPH assays.A total of 65 volatile compounds were identified and quantified by GC-MS and 23 aroma-active compounds were identified by GC-O and aroma extract dilution analysis.The most powerful aroma-active compounds were identified based on the flavor dilution factor and their contents were compared among the 19 CCAs.Principal component analysis of the 23 aroma-active components showed 3 significant clusters.Canonical correlation analysis between antioxidant assays and the 23 aroma-active compounds indicates strong correlation(r=0.9776,p=0.0281).Analysis of aroma-active components shows potential for quality evaluation and discrimination of CCAs from different geographical origins.

AIM:To compare the consistency of two autorefractors(Tianle RM-9000 and Topcon KR-800)for school-age myopia children,and to provide a basis for largescale data analysis and comparison.METHODS:The refractive error in 909 subjects(age 4–18y)were measured using both autorefractors without cycloplegia.The data were analyzed using Fourier decomposition and the correlation coefficients,intraclass correlation coefficients(ICC),and Bland-Altman limits of agreement(LoA)for each parameter were calculated.RESULTS:There was a strong correlation between the spherical equivalent(SE),sphere diopter(DS),and cylinder diopter(DC)readings of the Tianle RM-9000 and those of the Topcon KR-800,with correlation coefficient values of 0.98,0.98 and 0.83 and ICC values of 0.99,0.99 and 0.93,respectively.However,the correlation coefficients and ICC values of J0 and J45 were unreliable(R=-0.004,-0.034;both ICC<0.10).Bland-Altman analysis revealed that SE,DS,and DC measured by the Tianle RM-9000 were significantly biased toward myopia compared with the Topcon KR-800,and the mean differences were-0.072,-0.026,-0.091 D,respectively(all P<0.01).The minimum absolute value of the difference within the 95%LoA for SE,DS,and DC was 0.63 D,0.50 D,0.62 D,respectively;all these values were in the clinically acceptable range.For J0 and J45,the mean differences were close to zero(P=0.43,0.84);however,the 95%LoA were relatively wide(J0 SD:0.53;95%CI:-1.00,1.10;J45 SD:0.52;95%CI:-1.00,1.00).CONCLUSION:The two autorefractors are consistent with each other,as the differences in SE,DS,and DC were within the clinically acceptable range.Readers can compare the data measured by either device in different studies and use the two devices in the same study to generate a dataset that can be analyzed together.However,the J0 and J45 vectors are unreliable and should not be used to assess astigmatism.

Objective Postoperative delirium(POD)has become a critical challenge with severe consequences and increased incidences as the global population ages.However,the underlying mechanism is yet unknown.Our study aimed to explore the changes in metabolites in three specific brain regions and saliva of older mice with postoperative delirium behavior and to identify potential non-invasive biomarkers.Methods Eighteen-month-old male C57/BL6 mice were randomly assigned to the anesthesia/surgery or control group.Behavioral tests were conducted 24 h before surgery and 6,9,and 24 h after surgery.Complement C3(C3)and S100 calcium-binding protein B protein(S100beta)levels were measured in the hippocampus,and a metabolomics analysis was performed on saliva,hippocampus,cortex,and amygdala samples.Results In total,43,33,38,and 14 differential metabolites were detected in the saliva,hippocampus,cortex,and amygdala,respectively.“Pyruvate”“alpha-linolenic acid”and“2-oleoyl-1-palmitoy-snglycero-3-phosphocholine”are enriched in one common pathway and may be potential non-invasive biomarkers for POD.Common changes were observed in the three brain regions,with the upregulation of 1-methylhistidine and downregulation of D-glutamine.Conclusion Dysfunctions in energy metabolism,oxidative stress,and neurotransmitter dysregulation are implicated in the development of POD.The identification of changes in the level of salivary metabolite biomarkers could aid in the development of noninvasive diagnostic methods for POD.

BACKGROUND Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio(NLR),fibrosis index based on four factors(Fib4),aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index(APRI)can be used for prognostic evaluation of hepatocellular carcinoma.However,no study has established an individualized prediction model for the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma based on these factors.AIM To screen the factors that affect the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma and establish a nomogram model that predicts postoperative liver failure after hepatic resection in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.METHODS In total,220 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma treated in our hospital from January 2022 to January 2023 were selected.They were divided into 154 participants in the modeling cohort,and 66 in the validation cohort.Comparative analysis of the changes in NLR,Fib4,and APRI levels in 154 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma before liver resection and at 3 mo,6 mo,and 12 mo postoperatively was conducted.Binary logistic regression to analyze the influencing factors on the occurrence of liver failure in hepatocellular carcinoma patients,roadmap prediction modeling,and validation,patient work characteristic curves(ROCs)to evaluate the predictive efficacy of the model,calibration curves to assess the consistency,and decision curve analysis(DCA)to evaluate the model’s validity were also conducted.RESULTS Binary logistic regression showed that Child-Pugh grading,Surgical site,NLR,Fib4,and APRI were all risk factors for liver failure after hepatic resection in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.The modeling cohort built a column-line graph model,and the area under the ROC curve was 0.986[95%confidence in terval(CI):0.963-1.000].The patients in the validation cohort utilized the column-line graph to predict the probability of survival in the validation cohort and plotted the ROC curve with an area under the curve of the model of 0.692(95%CI:0.548-0.837).The deviation of the actual outcome curves from the calibration curves of the column-line plots gener

The impact wear behavior and damage mechanism of dissimilar welded joints between U26Mn frog and U75 V rail before and after normalizing treatment were studied by cyclic impact tests.The experiment indicated that the impact wear volume of the joints increased with the increasing number of impact cycles.The main wear mechanisms include pitting wear,mild fatigue wear,delamination wear,and fatigue wear,and plastic deformation was the primary impact wear mechanism.Among them,fatigue wear had the greatest influence on wear volume,while other wear mechanisms had limited effect.The impact wear resistance of the base material was better than that of the heat-affected zone.Normalizing treatment was beneficial to improving the impact wear resistance of welded joints owing to its effect to promote pearlite recovery,grain refinement,and uniform distribution of grains.The martensite generated in the rail welded joints aggravated the impact wear damage to the materials,which should be avoided.

Bio-based cyclodextrins(CDs)are a common research object in supramolecular chemistry.The special cavity structure of CDs can form supramolecular self-assemblies such as vesicles and microcrystals through weak interaction with guest molecules.The different forms of supramolecular self-assemblies can be transformed into each other under certain conditions.The regulation of supramolecular self-assembly is not only helpful to understand the self-assembly principle,but also beneficial to its application.In the present study,the self-assembly behavior of epoxy-β-cyclodextrin(EP-β-CD)and mixed anionic and cationic surfactant system(sodium dodecyl sulfate/dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide,SDS/DTAB)in aqueous solution was studied.Morphological and particle size characterization found that the SDS/DTAB@EP-β-CD complex,as the basic building unit,self-assembled into worm-like micelles at lower temperatures and vesicles at higher temperatures.Nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR)analysis revealed that the driving force for the formation of vesicles and worm-like micelles was the hydrogen bonds between EP-β-CD molecules,while water molecules played an important role in promoting vesicle formation between SDS/DTAB@EP-β-CD units.Herein,the mechanism of the morphologic transformation of SDS/DTAB@EP-β-CD supramolecular aggregates induced by temperature was elucidated by exploring the self-assembly process,which may provide an excellent basis for the development of delivery carriers.

Background:The discovery of regulatory cell death has led to a breakthrough in the therapeutic field.Various forms of cell death,such as necrosis,apoptosis,pyroptosis,autophagy,and ferroptosis,play an important role in the development of liver diseases.In general,more than one form of cell death pathways is responsible for the disease state.Therefore,it is particularly important to study the regulation and interaction of various cell death forms in liver diseases.Data sources:We performed a PubMed search up to November 2022 with the following keywords:ferritinophagy,ferroptosis,and liver disease.We also used terms such as signal path,inducer,and inhibitor to supplement the query results.Results:This review summarized the basic characteristics of ferritinophagy and ferroptosis and the regulation of ferroptosis by ferritinophagy and reviewed the key targets and treatment strategies of ferroptosis in different liver diseases.Conclusions:Ferritinophagy is a potential therapeutic target in ferroptosis-related liver diseases.

Extracellular vesicles(EVs)are considered to be a new generation of bioinspired nanoscale drug delivery systems due to their low immunogenicity,natural functionality,and excellent biocompatibility.However,limitations such as low uptake efficiency,insufficient production,and inhomogeneous performance undermine their potential.To address these issues,numerous researchers have put forward various methods and applications for enhancing EV uptake in recent decades.In this review,we introduce various methods for the cellular uptake of EVs and summarize recent advances on the methods and mechanisms for enhancing EV uptake.In addition,we provide further understanding regarding enhancing EV uptake and put forward prospects and challenges for the development of EV-based therapy in the future.
