Highly effective sorbents obtained by trea.ing agrowaste products in cold plasma

Sorbents are widely used in purifica.ion of va.ious liquids and gases, offering a universal means for wastewater and air clea.ing. The most promising sorbents are those obtained from agrowaste products such as rice or buckwheat husk. Processing of husk in cold plasma modifies the composition, structure and surface properties of the raw material and raises its porosity, thus substantially improving the sorption properties of the final *** as a raw material for producing sorbents has the following advantageous properties: (1) appropriate chemical composition; (2) low cost; (3) high dispersity, due to which there is no need in any special treatment of the material prior to its exposing to plasma; (4) scaly structure and developed porous surface ensuring a high surface-to-volume ra.io. The best properties are displayed by the sorbents obtained in cold plasma under reduced pressures of 53.2 Pa. The raw material traverses the region occupied by the plasma and, as it does so, it gets heated up to a temperature of 250 - 350 ℃. The whole process involves two stages: combustion of the raw material and modifica.ion of its properties under the action of the plasma. The combustion proceeds due to the oxygen contained in the starting material. During the combustion, the hydrogen contained in the starting material and some part of the carbon also burn out. The resultant scaly sorbent is accumulated in a cooler. The scales are black; they range in sizes from 1mm to 5 mm. The sorbents obtained are remarkable for their useful properties and outperform most of the tra.itional sorbents used in modern industry. The starting materials are inexpensive, and their resources are almost unlimited. The sorbents have rather a low production cost (1.8-2.5 $/kg). Evalua.ion of Shear Strength and Cone Penetra.ion Resistance Beha.ior of Tropical Silt Loam Soil under Uni-a.ial Compression

Laboratory investiga.ions were conducted to study strength characteristics of silt loam soil of ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, under uni-a.ial compression tests. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of applied pressure and moisture content on strength indices such as bulk density, penetra.ion resistance and shear strength of the soil and to develop rela.ionships between the strength indices for predictive purposes necessary in soil management. The compression was carried out at different moisture contents determined according to the consistency limits of the soil. The applied pressure ranged from 75 to 600 kPa. Values of bulk density, penetra.ion resistance and shear strength increased with increase in moisture content up to peak values after which the values decreased with further increase in moisture content. Regression models were used to describe the trends in the results for the soil. Results also showed that bulk density and soil strength normally regarded as indicators of soil qua.ity are affected by moisture content and applied pressure and that these properties can be predicted using the models generated from the study.

金刚石-硬质合金复合片的耐磨性是一个非常重要的技术指标,但迄今为止国际上尚无统一的PDC耐磨性测试标准。本文在分析我国和乌克兰评价PDC耐磨性方法优缺点的基础上进行了对比性研究,指出乌克兰超硬材料研究所按复合片在实验台上切削岩块的磨损高度和面积来评价的方法,更接近于孔底岩石破碎过程,PDC的几何磨耗量可更全面真实地反映复合片在钻探生产中的工作寿命。同时,讨论了乌克兰方法需要完善的地方。

PAHs in Sediments along the Semi-Closed Areas of Alexandria, Egypt

Sediment samples were collected from 49 sampling sta.ions along the semi-closed areas of Alexandria coasts, Egypt. Total concentra.ions of 15 out of 16 EPA-PAHs in sediments were va.ied from 4.2 to 886 ng.g–1 with an average value of 176 ng.g–1 (dry wt). The average total orga.ic carbon (TOC) percent was va.ied from 0.04 to 7.65%. Higher concentra.ion of total pyrolytic hydrocarbons (∑COMB) than total fossil hydrocarbons (∑COMB), declared that atmospheric fall-out is the significant source of PAHs to ma.ine sediments of the semi-closed area of Alexandria. The selected marked compounds and special PAHs compound ra.ios (phenanthrene/anthracene;fluoranthene/pyrene;∑COMB/ ∑EPA-PAHs) suggest the pyrogenic origins, especially traffic exhausts, are the dominant sources of PAHs in most loca.ions. interferences of rather petrogenic and pyrolytic PAH conta.ina.ions were noticed in the harbours, especially ma.ine area due to petroleum products deliveries and fuel combustion emissions from the ships sta.ing alongside the quays.

Using partial electrodes and a multifrequency electrical source,we present a large-bandwidth,large-amplitude clamped–clamped microbeam resonator excited near the higher order modes of *** analytically and experimentally investigate the nonlinear dyna.ics of the microbeam under a two-source harmonic *** first-frequency source is swept around the first three modes of vibra.ion,whereas the second source frequency remains *** additive and subtractive resonances are *** illustrated that by properly tuning the frequency and amplitude of the excita.ion force,the frequency bandwidth of the resonator is *** microbeam is fabricated using polyimide as a structural layer coated with nickel from the top and chromium and gold layers from the *** the Galerkin method,a reduced order model is derived to simulate the sta.ic and dyna.ic response of the device.A good agreement between the theoretical and experimental data are reported.
