Turbulent combustion in a DLR (German Aerospace Center) Scramjet engine was simulated using the newly-proposed Partially Resolved Numerical Simulation (PRNS) procedure. The PRNS procedure uses temporal filtering to define large-scale turbulence, and the model developed to account for unresolved scales is grid independent. No problem about inner commutation error and inconsistencies will arise from the PRNS, while such issues are of concern in traditional Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methods. The mean results have good agreement with the experiment data and the flow structures with small scales are well resolved.

Coffee drinking and pancreatic cancer risk:A meta-analysis of cohort studies

AIM:To quantitatively assess the relationship between coffee consumption and incidence of pancreatic cancer in a meta-analysis of cohort studies. METHODS:We searched MEDLINE,EMBASE,Science Citation Index Expanded and bibliographies of retrieved *** were included if they reported relative risks(RRs)and corresponding 95%CIs of pancreatic cancer with respect to frequency of coffee *** performed random-effects meta-analyses and metaregressions of study-specific incremental estimates to determine the risk of pancreatic cancer associated with a 1 cup/d increment in coffee consumption. RESULTS:Fourteen studies met the inclusion criteria, which included 671 080 individuals(1496 cancer events) with an average follow-up of 14.9 *** with individuals who did not drink or seldom drank coffee per day,the pooled RR of pancreatic cancer was 0.82 (95%CI:0.69-0.95)for regular coffee drinkers,0.86 (0.76-0.96)for low to moderate coffee drinkers,and 0.68(0.51-0.84)for high *** subgroup analyses,we noted that,coffee drinking was associated witha reduced risk of pancreatic cancer in men,while this association was not seen in *** associations were also similar in studies from North America,Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. CONCLUSION:Findings from this meta-analysis suggest that there is an inverse relationship between coffee drinking and risk of pancreatic cancer.

A molten salt reactor(MSR)has outstanding features considering the application of thorium fuel,inherent safety,sustainability,and resistance to ***,fissile material^(233)U is significantly rare at the current stage,thus it is difficult for MSR to achieve a pure thorium-uranium fuel ***,using plutonium or enriched uranium as the initial fuel for MSR is more *** this study,we aim to verify the feasibility of a small modular MSR that utilizes plutonium as the starting fuel(SM-MSR-Pu),and highlight its advantages and ***,the structural design and fuel management scheme of the SM-MSR-Pu were ***,the neutronic characteristics,such as the graphite-irradiation lifetime,burn-up performance,and coefficient of temperature reactivity were calculated to analyze the physical characteristics of the *** results indicate that plutonium is a feasible and advantageous starting fuel for a SM-MSR;however,there are certain shortcomings that need to be *** a 250 MWth SM-MSR-Pu,approximately 288.64 kg^(233)U of plutonium with a purity of greater than 90% is produced while 978.00 kg is burned every ten *** temperature reactivity coefficient decreases from -4.0 to -6.5 pcm K^(-1) over the 50-year operating time,which ensures a long-term safe ***,the amount of plutonium and accumulation of minor actinides(MAs)would increase as the burn-up time increases,and the annual production and purity of^(233)U will *** achieve an optimal burn-up performance,setting the entire operation time to 30 years is ***,more than 3600 kg of plutonium eventually accumulate in the *** research is required to effectively utilize this accumulated plutonium.

Proteome of human colon cancer stem cells:A comparative analysis

AIM: To isolate and identify the biological characteristics of human colon cancer stem cells (SW1116 cells) and further study their proteome. METHODS: SW1116 cells were isolated and cultured with a serum-free medium (SFM). Sphere formation was assayed to observe the formation of colon cancer stem cell spheres. SW1116 cells were inoculated into a serum-containing medium for observing their differentiation characteristics. Proliferation curve and cross-resistance of SW1116 cells to different drugs were detected by MTT. Percentage of SP cells in SW1116 cells was detected with Hoechst33342 staining. Telomerase activity in SW1116cells was checked by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Expressions of stem cell relevant genes and proteins were detected by reverse transcription-PCR and Western blot, respectively. Total protein was isolated from SW1116 cells by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and differentially expressed proteins were identified by tandem mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/TOF). RESULTS: The isolated SW1116 cells presented as spheroid and suspension growths in SFM with a strong self-renewal, proliferation, differentiation and drug-resistance ability. The percentage of SP cells in SW1116 cells was 38.9%. The SW1116 cells co-expressed the CD133 and CD29 proteins. The telomerase activity in SW1116 cells was increased. The expressions of different stem cell relevant genes and proteins were detected. The proteomic analysis showed that the 26 protein spots were differently expressed in SW1116 cells and 10 protein spots were identified as ubiquitin fusiondegradation 1-like protein, nuclear chloride channel protein, tubulin β, Raichu404X, stratifi n, F-actin capping protein α-1 subunit, eukaryotic translation elongation factor 1 delta isoform 2, hypothetical protein, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and guanine nucleotide binding protein β polypeptide 2-like 1, respectively. It was proved numerically that the Domain Decomposition Method CDDM) with one layer overlapping grids is identical to the block iterative method of linear algebra equations. The results obtained by using DDM could be in reasonable agreement with the results of full-domain simulation. With the three dimensional solver developed by the authors, the flow field in a pipe was simulated by using the full-domain DDM with one layer overlapping grids and with patched grids respectively. Both of the two cases led to the convergent solution. Further research shows the superiority of the DDM with one layer overlapping grids to the DDM with patched grids. A comparison between the numerical results obtained by the authors and the experimental results given by Enayet[3] shows that the numerical results are reasonable.

There is growing evidence of the high transmission potential of COVID-19 through virus-laden *** aerosols are inhaled in various concentrations,an overall assessment of transmission risks at different indoor scales is ***,a comprehensive risk assessment method that evaluates the direct link between short-range and room-scale zones is stl *** this paper,a risk assessment model combining both short-range and room-scale effects is developed to obtain effective reproduction number in confined indoor environments,called Turbulent Jet Wells Riley(TJWR)*** with the viral load data and aerosol generation data of different human respiratory activities,the Monte Carlo simulation method is applied to calculate the quanta emission rate,which further provides the input parameters of the TJWR *** known outbreaks(Hangzhou banquet hall X,Guangzhou restaurant Y,and Hong Kong restaurant Z,China)are chosen to validate the TJWR *** show that the TJWR model is more efficient than the original Wells-Riley *** average relative error of the TJWR model ranges between 9%and 44%,while for the Wells-Riley model,it ranges between 57%and 78%.The TJWR model also proves that infection risk assessments using the well-mixed assumption can systematically underestimate the transmission risk for those close to the ***,there is a significant positive linear correlation between the total number of exposed individuals at the short-range and the effective reproduction *** newly developed TJWR model has great potential for rapid and real-time overall airborne transmission risk assessment in buildings and cities.

This paper presents a high-accuracy method for solving 2-D incompressible viscous N-S equations in tensor forms. A domain decomposition method was used to divide the computational domain into several regular blocks with the overlapping grid in order to transfer data between sub-domains and to remove numerical singularity caused by domain decomposition. Using the method and algorithm presented above, the flow passing an ellipse was computed and the formation and evolution of the vortex shedding was successfully simulated.

When investigating the vortex-induced vibration(VIV)of marine risers,extrapolating the dynamic response on the entire length based on limited sensor measurements is a crucial step in both laboratory experiments and fatigue monitoring of real *** problem is conventionally solved using the modal decomposition method,based on the principle that the response can be approximated by a weighted sum of limited vibration ***,the method is not valid when the problem is underdetermined,i.e.,the number of unknown mode weights is more than the number of known *** study proposed a sparse modal decomposition method based on the compressed sensing theory and the Compressive Sampling Matching Pursuit(Co Sa MP)algorithm,exploiting the sparsity of VIV in the modal *** the validation study based on high-order VIV experiment data,the proposed method successfully reconstructed the response using only seven acceleration measurements when the conventional methods failed.A primary advantage of the proposed method is that it offers a completely data-driven approach for the underdetermined VIV reconstruction problem,which is more favorable than existing model-dependent solutions for many practical applications such as riser structural health monitoring.

Hydrogen economy based on electrochemical water splitting exemplified one of the most promising means for overcoming the rapid consumption of fossil fuels and the serious deterioration of global *** development of earth-abundant,efficient,and durable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)plays a vital role in the commercialization of water ***,the self-supported electrode with unique nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide(N-rGO)nanoflakes and WS_(2) hierarchical nanoflower that were grown directly on carbon cloth(CC)substrate(WS_(2)/N-rGO/CC)was successfully synthesized using a facile dual-step hydrothermal *** as-synthesized 50%1T/2H-WS_(2)/N-rGO/CC(WGC),which possessed high metallic 1T phase of 57%not only efficiently exposed more active sites and accelerated mass/charge diffusion,but also endowed excellent structural lustiness,robust stability,and durability at a high current *** a result,the 50%WGC exhibited lower overpotentials and Tafel slopes of 21.13 mV(29.55 mV∙dec^(-1))and 80.35 mV(137.02 mV∙dec^(-1))as compared to 20%Pt-C/CC,respectively for catalyzing acidic and alkaline hydrogen evolution ***,the as-synthesized 50%WGC also depicted long-term stability for more than 8 h in the high-current-density regions(100 and 220 mA∙cm^(-2)).In brief,this work reveals a self-supported electrode as an extraordinary alternative to Pt-based catalysts for HER in a wide pH range,while paving a facile strategy to develop advanced electrocatalysts with abundant heterointerfaces for practical applications in energy-saving hydrogen production.
