On-site solar PV generation and use: Self-consumption andself-sufficiency

As energy storage systems are typically not installed with residential solar photovoltaic (PV) systems,any “excess” solar energy exceeding the house load remains unharvested or is exported to the *** paper introduces an approach towards a system design for improved PV self-consumptionand self-sufficiency. As a result, a polyvalent heat pump, offering heating, cooling and domestic hotwater, is considered alongside water storage tanks and batteries. Our method of system analysisbegins with annual hourly thermal loads for heating and cooling a typical Australian house inGeelong, Victoria. These hourly heating and cooling loads are determined using Transient SystemSimulation (TRNSYS) software. The house’s annual hourly electricity consumption is analysed usingsmart meter data downloaded from the power supplier and PV generation data measured with aPV system controller. The results reveal that the proposed system could increase PV self-consumptionand self-sufficiency to 41.96% and 86.34%, respectively, resulting in the annual imported energybeing reduced by about 74%. The paper also provides sensitivity analyses for the hot and coldstorage tank sizes, the coefficient of performance of the heat pump, solar PV and battery *** establishing the limits of thermal storage size, a significant impact on self-efficiency can berealised through battery storage. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using a polyvalent heatpump together with water storage tanks and, ultimately, batteries to increase PV self-consumptionand self-sufficiency. Future work will concentrate on determining a best-fit approach to systemsizing embedded within the TRNSYS simulation tool.

A recent study shed light on transcriptional regulation of myofiber-derived Dkk3,a secreted protein involved in muscle differentiation,which has therapeutic implications in damage-induced muscle regeneration and obesity-associated muscle *** in muscle regeneration have been centered on resident muscle stem cells(MuSCs),also known as satellite *** muscle damage,quiescent MuSCs are activated to enter the cell cycle and start *** give rise to myogenic progenitor cells or myoblasts that differentiate into *** fuse with each other to form multinucleate myotubes that further mature to become myofibers[1].Each of the above stages is characterized by cascades of gene expression patterns orches-trated by distinct transcription factors receiving external signals from the microenvironment in alliance with physical interactions between the differentiating muscle cells and the other cell types in the muscle[2].

A new estimation method and an anisotropy index for the deformation modulus of jointed rock masses

The deformation modulus of a rock mass is an important parameter to describe its mechanical *** this study,an analytical method is developed to determine the deformation modulus of jointed rock masses,which considers the mechanical properties of intact rocks and joints based on the superposition *** to incorporating the variations in the orientations and sizes of joint sets,the proposed method is applicable to the rock mass with persistent and parallel joints as well as that with nonpersistent and nonparallel *** addition,an anisotropy index AIdmfor the deformation modulus is defined to quantitatively describe the anisotropy of rock *** range of AIdmis from 0 to 1,and the more anisotropic the rock mass is,the larger the value of AIdmwill *** evaluate the proposed method,20 groups of numerical experiments are conducted with the universal distinct element code(UDEC).For each experimental group,the deformation modulus in 24 directions are obtained by UDEC(numerical value)and the proposed method(predicted value),and then the mean error rates are *** that the mean error rate is the mean value of the error rates of the deformation modulus in 24 directions,where for each direction,the error rate is equal to the ratio of numerical value minus predicted value to the numerical *** results show that(i)for different experimental groups,the mean error rates vary between 5.06%and 22.03%;(ii)the error rates for the discrete fracture networks(DFNs)with two sets of joints are at the same level as those with one set of joints;and(iii)therefore,the proposed method for estimating the deformation modulus of jointed rock masses is valid.

Type Ia supernovae(SNe Ia)play a key role in the fields of astrophysics and *** is widely accepted that SNe Ia arise from thermonuclear explosions of white dwarfs(WDs)in binary ***,there is no consensus on the fundamental aspects of the nature of SN Ia progenitors and their actual explosion *** fundamentally flaws our understanding of these important astrophysical *** this review,we outline the diversity of SNe Ia and the proposed progenitor models and explosion *** discuss the recent theoretical and observational progress in addressing the SN Ia progenitor and explosion mechanism in terms of the observables at various stages of the explosion,including rates and delay times,pre-explosion companion stars,ejecta–companion interaction,early excess emission,early radio/X-ray emission from circumstellar material interaction,surviving companion stars,late-time spectra and photometry,polarization signals and supernova remnant *** the efforts from both the theoretical and observational sides,questions of how the WDs reach an explosive state and what progenitor systems are more likely to produce SNe Ia remain *** single published model is able to consistently explain all observational features and the full diversity of SNe *** may indicate that either a new progenitor paradigm or an improvement in current models is needed if all SNe Ia arise from the same *** alternative scenario is that different progenitor channels and explosion mechanisms contribute to SNe *** the next decade,the ongoing campaigns with the James Webb Space Telescope,Gaia and the Zwicky Transient Facility,and upcoming extensive projects with the Vera *** Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time and the Square Kilometre Array will allow us to conduct not only studies of individual SNe Ia in unprecedented detail but also systematic investigations for different subclasses of SNe *** will advance theory and observation

Influence of Near Real-Time Green Vegetation Fraction Data on Numerical Weather Prediction by WRF over North China

The green vegetation fraction(GVF)can greatly influence the partitioning of surface sensible and latent heat fluxes in numerical weather prediction(NWP)***,the multiyear averaged monthly GVF climatology—the most commonly used representation of the vegetation state in models—cannot capture the real-time vegetation state *** this study,a near real-time(NRT)GVF dataset generated from an 8-day composite of the normalized difference vegetation index is compared with the 10-yr averaged monthly GVF provided by the WRF *** annual variability of the GVF over North China is examined in *** differences between the two GVF datasets are found over dryland,grassland,and cropland/grassland mosaic *** experiments using different GVF datasets are performed to assess the impacts of GVF on forecasts of screen-level temperature and *** results show that using NRT GVF can lead to a widespread reduction of 2-m temperature forecast errors from April to *** against in-situ observations shows that the positive impact on 2-m temperature forecasts in the morning is more distinct than that in the *** study demonstrates that NRT GVF can provide a more realistic representation of the vegetation state,which in turn helps to improve short-range forecasts in arid and semiarid regions of North ***,our study shows that the negative effect of using NRT GVF is closely related to the initial soil moisture.

Human shoulder joints exhibit stable but highly active characteristics due to a large amount of soft *** Element(FE)modelling plays an important role in enhancing our understanding of the mechanism of shoulder ***,the previous FE shoulder models largely neglected the Three-Dimensional(3D)volume of soft tissues and their sophisticated interactions with the *** study develops a 3D model of the rotator cuff and deltoid muscles and *** also includes cartilage and,for the first time,main ligaments around the joint to provide a better computational representation of the delicate interaction of the soft *** model has potential value for studying the force transfer mechanism and overall joint stability variation caused by 3D pathological changes of rotator cuff *** analysis systems and Magnetic Resonance(MR)scans were used to collect shoulder movement and geometric data from a young healthy subject,*** on MR images,a FE model with detailed representations of the musculoskeletal components was constructed.A multi-body model and the measured motion data were utilised to estimate the loading and boundary ***-static FE analyses simulated four instants of the measured scapular *** determined glenohumeral motion,stress/strain distribution in soft tissues,contact area,and mean/peak contact pressure were found to increase monotonically from 0°to 30°of *** results of muscle forces,bone-on-bone contact force,and superior-inferior movement of the humeral centre during motion were consistent with previous experimental and numerical *** is concluded that the constructed FE shoulder model can accurately estimate the biomechanics in the investigated range of motion and may be further used for the comprehensive study of shoulder musculoskeletal disorders.

Determining axial dispersion coefficients of pilot-scale annular pulsed disc and doughnut columns

In this study,a computational fluid dynamics(CFD)method was adopted to calculate axial dispersion coefficients of annular pulsed disc and doughnut columns(APDDCs).Passive tracer was uniformly injected by pulse input at the continuous phase inlet,and its concentration governing equation was solved in liquid–liquidtwo-phase flow *** residence time distributions(RTDs)were obtained using the surface monitoring *** adopted RTD–CFD method was verified by comparing the axial dispersion coefficient between simulation and experimental results in the ***,in pilot-scale APDDCs,the axial dispersion coefficients predicted by the CFD–RTD method were approximately three times larger than experimental results determined by the steady-state concentration profile *** experimental method was demonstrated to be insensitive to the variation of the axial dispersion *** CFD–RTD method was more recommended to determine the axial dispersion *** was found that the axial dispersion coefficient increased with an increase in pulsation intensity,column diameter,and plate spacing,but was little affected by the throughput.

Semiconducting conjugated polymer nanoparticles(SPNs)represent an emerging class of phototheranostic materi-als with great promise for cancer *** this report,low-bandgap electron donoracceptor(DA)-conjugated SPNs with sur-face cloaked by red blood cell membrane(RBCM)are developed for highly e ective photoacoustic imaging and photothermal *** resulting RBCM-coated SPN(SPN@RBCM)displays remarkable near-infrared light absorption and good photosta-bility,as well as high photothermal conver-sion e ciency for photoacoustic imaging and photothermal ***,due to the small size(<5 nm),SPN@RBCM has the advantages of deep tumor penetration and rapid clearance from the body with no appreciable *** RBCM endows the SPNs with prolonged systematic circulation time,less reticuloendothelial system uptake and reduced immune-recognition,hence improving tumor accumulation after intravenous injection,which provides strong photoacoustic signals and exerts excellent photothermal therapeutic e ***,this work provides a valuable paradigm for safe and highly e cient tumor pho-toacoustic imaging and photothermal therapy for further clinical translation.

Pseudo-Spectral Method for Space Fractional Diffusion Equation

This paper presents a numerical scheme for space fractional diffusion equations (SFDEs) based on pseudo-spectral method. In this approach, using the Guass-Lobatto nodes, the unknown function is approximated by orthogonal polynomials or interpolation polynomials. Then, by using pseudo-spectral method, the SFDE is reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations for time variable t. The high order Runge-Kutta scheme can be used to solve the system. So, a high order numerical scheme is derived. Numerical examples illustrate that the results obtained by this method agree well with the analytical solutions.
