Novel gripper module and method for automated assembly of miniature parts

During assembly process,the miniature part needs to be fixed in its assembly position.In some occasions where adhesive is used,the joining force is not established due to the adhesive curing process,in that case the locking of parts is required.Manual locking is difficult to meet the increasing demand for mass production.To solve this problem and realize fully automatic assembly,a novel gripper module was designed and corresponding locking method was proposed.Thanks to the functional integration,the gripper module is capable of manipulating and locking the part.This module is integrated into the assembly system and plays a crucial role in automatic assembly.The locking method for automatic assembly is based on the integration of the part picking up and the locking unit releasing.After being placed accurately at its desired position,the miniature part can be automatically locked by releasing the locking unit.The innovative structure and mechanism of the gripper module convert the spring force into the locking force of the miniature part,ensuring non-rigid locking and suitable small locking force.Locking principle,flexibility and limitations of the proposed method were clarified in detail.Moreover,an effective compensation strategy was used to achieve accurate and stable pickup of the part,which increased the reliability of the assembly process.During automatic locking,the disturbances to the part due to the eccentric load were analyzed.The effectiveness of the gripper module and proposed method was verified by experiment.Experimental results indicated that the modular system integrated with the gripper module could meet the requirements of fully automatic assembly.Manual locking is replaced by automatic locking,and workers are liberated from tedious manual operations.The improvement of automation level enables assembly equipment to be applied to mass production scenarios.

Gene therapy and genome editing for primary immunodeficiency diseases

In past two decades the gene therapy using genetic modified autologous hematopoietic stem cells(HSCs)transduced with the viral vector has become a promising alternative option for treating primary immunodeficiency diseases(PIDs).Despite of some pitfalls at early stage clinical trials,the field of gene therapy has advanced significantly in the last decade with improvements in viral vector safety,preparatory regime for manufacturing high quality virus,automated CD34 cell purification.Hence,the overall outcome from the clinical trials for the different PIDs has been very encouraging.In addition to the viral vector based gene therapy,the recent fast moving forward developments in genome editing using engineered nucleases in HSCs has provided a new promising platform for the treatment of PIDs.This review provides an overall outcome and progress in gene therapy clinical trials for SCID-X,ADA-SCID,WAS,X-CGD,and the recent developments in genome editing technology applied in HSCs for developing potential therapy,particular in the key studies for PIDs.

Choice of Force Fields and Water Models for Sampling Solution Conformations of Bacteriophage T4 Lysozyme

A protein may exist as an ensem-ble of di erent conformations in solution,which cannot be repre-sented by a single static structure.Molecular dy-namics(MD)simulation has become a useful tool for sampling protein conformations in solution,but force elds and water models are important issues.This work presents a case study of the bacteriophage T4 lysozyme(T4L).We have found that MD simulations using a classic AMBER99SB force eld and TIP4P water model cannot well describe hinge-bending domain motion of the wild-type T4L at the timescale of one microsecond.Other combinations,such as a residue-speci c force eld called RSFF2+and a dispersion-corrected water model TIP4P-D,are able to sample reasonable solution conformations of T4L,which are in good agreement with experimental data.This primary study may provide candidates of force elds and water models for further investigating conformational transition of T4L.

Cilium,an organelle with a unique proteome and organization,protruding from the cell surface,generally serves as a force generator and signaling compartment.During ciliogenesis,ciliary proteins are synthesized in cytoplasm and transported into cilia by intraflagellar transport(IFT)particles,where the inner counterparts undergo reverse trafficking.The homeostasis of IFT plays a key role in cilial structure assembly and signaling transduction.Much progress has been made on the mechanisms and functions of IFT;however,recent studies have revealed the involvement of IFT particle subunits in organogenesis and spermatogenesis.In this review,we discuss new concepts concerning the molecular functions of IFT protein IFT25 and how its interactions with other IFT particle subunits are involved in mammalian development and fertility.

Distributional patterns of anemophilous tree pollen indicating the pathways of Indian monsoon through QinghaieTibetan Plateau

The distribution pattern of vegetation on QinghaieTibetan Plateau is fundamentally influenced by the plateau climate, which is mainly controlled by Indian monsoon during summer. The long distance transportation of pollen（mostly anemophilous taxa） produced by trees on the plateau has been recorded by modern pollen samples in previous studies, and hypothesized to be a good indicator of monsoon dynamics.Here we use 270 surface pollen samples from QinghaieTibetan Plateau to test the distribution patterns of the anemophilous tree pollen. Meanwhile factors related to Indian monsoon affecting pollen transportation are simulated and analyzed. Results show that depositional patterns of anemophilous tree pollen, especially Abies, Pinus, Quercus and Betula are completely controlled by the pathways of Indian monsoon. This is reflected by climatic indicators of the atmospheric pressure pattern over JuneeJ ulye August, by the precipitation pattern over JuneeJulyeAugust and by the topographic feature of the plateau. The spatial interpolation of thin plate spline results also display two depositional centers（ca. 30°N, 95°E and 30°N, 105°E）of the anemophilous tree pollen. In contrast to previous conclusion that pollen distributional pattern is determined by mean annual precipitation, we argue that Indian monsoon is the essential controller because of the synchronization between timing of monsoon wind and timing of plants flowering. Our finding strongly suggests that distributional pattern of anemophilous tree pollen on the plateau is a good proxy of Indian monsoon.

Modeling impact of culture facilities on hydrodynamics and solute transport in marine aquaculture waters of North Yellow Sea

An increasing number of marine aquaculture facilities have been placed in shallow bays and open sea,which might significantly affect hydrodynamic and solute transport processes in marine aquaculture waters.In this study,a coupled hydrodynamic and solute transport model was developed with high-resolution schemes in marine aquaculture waters based on depth-averaged shallow water equations.A new expression of drag force was incorporated into the momentum equations to express the resistance of suspended culture cages.The coupled model was used to simulate the effect of suspended structures on tidal currents and the movement of a contaminant cloud in the marine aquaculture of the North Yellow Sea,China.The simulation results showed a low-velocity area appearing inside the aquaculture cage area,with a maximum reduction rate of velocity close to 45%under high-density culture.The results also showed that tidal currents were sensitive to the density of suspended cages,the length of cages,and the drag coefficients of cages.The transport processes of pollutants inside aquaculture facilities were inhibited away from the vicinity of the culture cage area because of the diminished tidal currents.Therefore,the suspended cages significantly affected the transport processes of pollutants in the coastal aquaculture waters.Furthermore,the reduced horizontal velocity significantly decreased the food supply for the aquaculture areas from the surrounding sea.

Clinical and Radiological Features of Wallerian Degeneration of the Middle Cerebellar Peduncles Secondary to Pontine Infarction

Background： Wallerian degeneration （WD） of bilateral middle cerebellar its characteristics have not yet been clarified because of the low incidence peduncles （MCPs） can occur following pontine infarction, but Thus, the present study discussed the clinical and radiological features to improve the awareness of this disease. Methods： Clinical and radiological information from consecutive individuals diagnosed with WD of bilateral MCPs following pontine infarction in three hospitals over the past 4 years between October 2012 and October 2016 were retrospectively investigated and compared with a control group （patients with pontine infarction had no secondary WD）. Results： This study involved 30 patients with WD of MCPs, with a detection rate of only 4.9%. The primary infarctions （χ2 -24.791, P = 0.001, vs. control group） were located in the paramedian pons in 21 cases （70.0%）, and ventrolateral pons in nine cases （30.0%）. WD of the MCPs was detected 8-24 weeks after pons infarction using conventional magnetic resonance imaging （M RI）; all secondary WDs were asymptomatic and detected incidentally. All WD lesions exhibited bilateral, symmetrical, and boundary blurring on MRI. The signal features were hypointense on Tl-weighted imaging, hyperintense on T2-weighted imaging and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery, and slightly hyperintense or isointense on diffusion-weighted imaging and apparent diffusion coefficient maps. Secondary brainstem atrophy was found in six （20.0%） cases. A Modified Rankin Scale score 0-2 was found in 10 （33.3%） cases and score 〉2 in 20 （66.7%） cases at 90 days after discharge, and the short-term prognosis was worse than that in control group （χ2 =12.814, P - 0.001 ）. Conclusions： Despite the rarity of bilateral and symmetrical lesions of MCPs, secondary WD should be highly suspected if these lesions occur within 6 months after pontine infarction, particularly parainedian ports. Microstructural characterization and mechanical properties of(TiC+TiB)/TA15 composites prepared by an in-situ synthesis method

Titanium matrix composites reinforced with ceramic particles are considered a promising engineering material due to their combination of high specific strength,low density,and high modulus.In this study,the TA15-based composites reinforced with a volume fraction of 10% to 25%(TiB+TiC)were prepared using powder metallurgy and casting technique.Microstructural characterization and phase constitution were examined using optical microscopy(OM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and X-ray diffraction(XRD).In addition,the microhardness,room temperature(RT)and high temperature(HT)tensile properties of the composites were evaluated.Results revealed that the reinforcements are distributed uniformly even in the composites with a high volume of TiB and TiC.However,as the volume fraction exceeds 15%,TiB and TiC particles become coarsening and exhibit rod-like and dendritic-like morphology.Microhardness increases gradually from 321.2 HV for the base alloy to a maximum of 473.3 HV as the reinforcement increases to 25vol.%.Tensile test results indicate that a reinforcement volume fraction above 20% is beneficial for enhancing tensile strength and yield strength at high temperatures,but it has an adverse effect on room temperature elongation.Conversely,if the reinforcement volume fraction is below 20%,it can improve high-temperature elongation when the temperature exceeds 600℃.

Investigation on catalytic distillation for ethyl acetate production with different catalytic packing structures

The catalytic packing is the core component of the catalytic distillation,and how the catalyst exists in the packing has significant influence on the process.To investigate the effect of catalyst packings on the catalytic distillation process,the classical ethyl acetate reactive distillation system was utilized,and a supported catalytic packing(SCP)was prepared in comparison with the conventional tea-bag catalytic packing(TBP).Laboratory scale experiments showed that the ethyl acetate conversion of the SCP was superior to the TBP at a low catalyst loading.The effects of reaction kinetics,mass transfer performance and actual catalytic efficiency of the packings on this process were regarded as reasons and studied by combining the experiments and numerical simulation.Results suggested that the relatively immediate“in-situ separation”caused by the rapid reaction kinetics and better mass transfer performance of SCP may be a main reason for the difference of the conversion.

Trajectory optimization of a deflectable nose missile

The deflectable nose missile has a longer range by deflecting its nose to improve its aerodynamic feature.Based on detached eddy simulation(DES), the supersonic flow fields of a missile with deflectable nose are simulated numerically and its aerodynamic force coefficients are calculated under the condition of the deflection angles vary from 0° to 8°, angles of attack, 0°-8°, and mach numbers, 2 to 5. Coupling these aerodynamic coefficients with the plumb plane ballistic equations, the extended flight range has been calculated. Furthermore, the genetic algorithm(GA) is employed for the solution of maximum range of the deflected missile.
