BACKGROUND:Fatty liver is a common chronic liver disease *** is associated with an increasing morbidity in china in recent *** aim of this study was to analyze the effect of drinking alcohol on the hemoglobin and biochemical values of patients with fatty ***:We investigated the clinical and laboratory data of 669 patients with fatty *** the 669 patients,166 consumed alcohol more than 60 g per week for at least 2 years,and 503 did not have a history of long-term alcohol *** further analyzed the relationship between alcohol consumption and clinical characteristics of these ***:The values of aspartate transaminase (AST),gammaglutamyl transpeptidase (GGT),and hemoglobin in the long-term consumption group were significantly higher than those in the non long-term consumption group (P<0.05).In the patients without long-term alcohol consumption,the values of GGT and hemoglobin in patients with light alcohol consumption were significantly higher than those in non alcohol consumers (P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Alcohol consumption is associated with significantly increased values of AST,GGT,and hemoglobin in patients with fatty liver,suggesting their potential roles in hepatic steatosis.

Aim: To determine the distribution of cysteinyl leukotriene receptor 2 （CysLT2）, one of the cysteinyl leukotriene receptors, in human brains with traumatic injury and tumors. Methods: Brain specimens were obtained from patients who underwent brain surgery. CysLT2in brain tissues was examined using immunohis-tochemical analysis. Results: CysLT2was expressed in the smooth muscle cells （not in the endothelial cells） of arteries and veins. CysLT2was also expressed in the granulocytes in both vessels and in the brain parenchyma. In addition, CysLT2was detected in neuron- and glial-appearing cells in either the late stages of traumatic injury or in the area surrounding the tumors. Microvessels regenerated 8 d after trauma and CysLT2expression was recorded in their endothelial cells. Conclusion: CysLT2is distributed in vascular smooth muscle cells and granulocytes, and brain trauma and tumor can induce its expression in vascular endothelial cells and in a number of other cells.

Comparison of high order aberration after conventional and customized ablation in myopic LASIK in different eyes of the same patient

Purpose: To verify whether there exists any difference in higher order aberrations after undergoing myopic LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) with conventional ablation and customized ablation in different eyes of the same patient. Methods: This was a prospective randomized study of 54 myopic eyes (27 patients) that underwent LASIK using the Nidek EC-5000 ex-cimer laser system (Nidek, Gamagori, Japan). Topography-guided customized aspheric treatment zone (CATz) was used in the first eye of the patient (study group) and the other eye of the same patient was operated on with conventional ablation (control group). Higher order aberrations [root-mean-square (RMS) in the 5-mm zone] of both groups were observed with the Nidek OPD-Scan aberrometer before and 3 months after LASIK. Preoperative mean refractive error was similar between two eyes of the same patient (t=?0.577, P>0.05). Results: Preoperatively, higher order aberrations (RMS in the 5-mm zone) in the CATz ablation and conventional groups were (0.3600±0.0341) μm and (0.2680±0.1421) μm, respectively. This difference was not statistically significant (t=1.292, P>0.05). Three months after LASIK, higher order aberrations (RMS in 5-mm zone) in the CATz ablation and conventional groups were (0.3627±0.1510) μm and (0.3991±0.1582) μm, respectively. No statistically significant difference was noted between pre- and postoperative higher order aberrations in the CATz group (t=?0.047, P>0.05). However, a statistically significant increase in higher order aberrations was observed after conventional ablation (t=?5.261, P<0.05). A statistically sig-nificant difference was noted in the increase of higher order aberrations after LASIK between groups (t=?2.050, P=0.045). Con-clusion: LASIK with conventional ablation and topography-guided CATz ablation resulted in the same BSCVA (best specta-cle-corrected visual acuity) 3 month after LASIK. Objective: To find out an optimal condition for isola-tion and primary culture of ***: Rat hepatocytes were isolated by a two-stepcollagenase perfusion, and cultured in hepatozyme-SFM. The reduction of MTT to formazan salt was ex-amined. Supernatant medium was collected for analy-sis of alanine aminotransferase（ALT） and ***: The two-step collagenase perfusion yielded39±12×10;cells/g liver tissue with a viability of88%±2%. Fine morphology and stable urea synthesisfor one week could be achieved when hepatocytes werecultured in ***: High yield of hepatocytes can be isolatedwith two-step collagenese perfusion. Hepatozyme-SFM is suitable for sustained growth of hepatocytes.

BACKGROUND:Increasing evidence suggests that a close interaction of Kupffer cells with T cells plays a central role in concanavalin A-induced hepatic injury in mice,but the underlying mechanisms remain *** present study aimed to determine the relative roles of Th1 and Th17 type responses in concanavalin A-induced hepatic injury in mice, and to investigate whether or not Kupffer cells contribute to hepatic injury via a Th1 or Th17 type response-dependent pathway. METHODS:Immune-mediated hepatic injury was induced in C57BL/6 mice by intravenous injection of concanavalin A. Kupffer cells were inactivated by pretreatment with gadolinium chloride 24 hours before the concanavalin A *** interferon-gamma(IFN-γ)and interleukin-17(IL-17)pathways were blocked by specific neutralizing *** injury was assessed using serum transferase activity and pathological *** of inflammatory cytokines within the liver was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry. BACKGROUND: Currently, more and more nucleos(t)ide analogs are appearing as therapeutic options in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Their efficacy and safety profile in hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection have already been studied in detail worldwide. This review summarizes the efficacy of lamivudine, adefovir, entecavir and newer antiviral agents such as emtricitabine, telbivudine and clevudine in the treatment of hepatitis B in different clinical situations. DATA SOURCES: An English-language literature search using OVID and MEDLINE was performed and a total of 40 articles on the treatment of chronic hepatitis with nucleos(t)ide analogues were selected. RESULTS: Nucleos(t)ide analogs such as lamivudine, adefovir and entecavir are well tolerated and induce a decrease in serum HBV-DNA levels associated with normalization of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels. But their sustained response with HBeAg to anti-HBe seroconversion is rarely obtained and HBsAg loss is exceptional. The response is maintained during therapy which needs to be continued indefinitely in the majority of patients since withdrawal of treatment is generally followed by a rapid reactivation of hepatitis B. However, drug resistant mutations can be induced in long-term treatment. Other newer antiviral agents such as emtricitabine, telbivudine and clevudine in the treatment of hepatitis B are still under phaseⅡorⅢclinical trials. CONCLUSIONS: Nucleos(t)ide analogs play an important role in the therapy of hepatitis B now and in the future. Lamivudine is limited by the frequent emergence of drugresistant (HBV) mutants (YMDD). Adefovir and entecavir appear to be effective against both YMDD mutation and wild type. Therapeutic options against hepatitis B virus remain a major clinical challenge.

Triptolide （TP）,a traditional Chinese medicine,has been reported to be effective in thetreatment of autoimmune diseases and exerting antineoplastic activity in several human tumor cell *** investigates the antitumor effect of TP in human colon cancer cells （SW114） and myelocytic leukemia（K562）,and elucidates the possible molecular mechanism ***114 and K562 cells were treatedwith different doses of TP （0,5,10,20,or 50 ng/ml）.The cell viability was assessed by 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide （MTT）. Results demonstrated that TP inhibited the proliferation ofboth tumor cell lines in a dose-dependent *** further investigate its mechanisms,the productsprostaglandin E2（PGE2） and nitric oxide （NO） were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay（ELISA）.Our data showed that TP strongly inhibited the production of NO and PGE2. Consistent with theseresults,the expression of inducible NO synthase （iNOS） and cyclooxygenase-2 （COX-2） was up-regulatedboth at the mRNA level and the protein expression level,as shown by real-time RT-PCR and *** results indicated that the inhibition of the inflammatory factor COX-2 and iNOS activitycould be involved in the antitumor mechanisms of TP.

BACKGROUND: The past decade has witnessed the rapid development of liver transplantation in china. The 1-year survival of liver transplant patients comes to 80% in many leading medical centers and the number of liver transplanta- tion is increasing. However, liver transplantation in china is facing several challenges including recipient with hepato- cellular carcinoma (HCC), recurrence of HCC and hepati- tis B, long-term postoperative care, the bridge to liver transplantation, and shortage of liver donor. This review was to understand the status of and problems in liver trans- plantation in china. DATA RESOURCES: An English-language literature search using MEDLINE (1990-2003) on liver transplantation and other related reports and review articles in Chinese from major transplant centers in china. RESULTS: HCC is one of the main indications for liver transplantation in china but different centers adopted dif- ferent criteria for selection of patients. Hepatitis B virus re- infection is a vital problem after liver transplantation in HBV-related patients. More and more attention was fo- cused on long-term postoperative care and donor shortage. Artificial liver support system has been applied in patients waiting for a graft in many centers. CONCLUSIONS: HCC remains to be one of the main indi- cations for liver transplantation in china; combined hepati- tis B immune globulin and lamivudine is considered effec- tive to prevent hepatitis B virus reinfection. Apart from long-term postoperative care for the improvement of the survival rate, early steroid withdrawal is feasible in liver transplantation. Living donor liver transplantation, split liv- er transplantation, and marginal donor transplantation can deal with donor shortage to some extent. Artificial liver as- sist system serves as a bridge to liver transplantation.
