Bionic lightweight design of limb leg units for hydraulic quadruped robots by additive manufacturing and topology optimization

Galloping cheetahs,climbing mountain goats,and load hauling horses all show desirable locomotion capability,which motivates the development of quadruped robots.Among various quadruped robots,hydraulically driven quadruped robots show great potential in unstructured environments due to their discrete landing positions and large payloads.As the most critical movement unit of a quadruped robot,the limb leg unit(LLU)directly affects movement speed and reliability,and requires a compact and lightweight design.Inspired by the dexterous skeleton–muscle systems of cheetahs and humans,this paper proposes a highly integrated bionic actuator system for a better dynamic performance of an LLU.We propose that a cylinder barrel with multiple element interfaces and internal smooth channels is realized using metal additive manufacturing,and hybrid lattice structures are introduced into the lightweight design of the piston rod.In addition,additive manufacturing and topology optimization are incorporated to reduce the redundant material of the structural parts of the LLU.The mechanical properties of the actuator system are verified by numerical simulation and experiments,and the power density of the actuators is far greater than that of cheetah muscle.The mass of the optimized LLU is reduced by 24.5%,and the optimized LLU shows better response time performance when given a step signal,and presents a good trajectory tracking ability with the increase in motion frequency.

The storage and utilization of carbohydrates in response to elevation mediated by tree organs in subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forests

Global climate change can affect tree growth and carbon sink function by influencing plant carbohydrate synthesis and utilization,while elevation can be used as an ideal setting under natural conditions to simulate climate change effects.The effect of elevation on tree growth may depend on organ type.However,the allocation patterns of nonstructural and structural carbohydrates(NSCs and SCs,respectively)in different tree organs and their response to elevation remain unclear.We selected four dominant tree species,Schima superba,Castanopsis eyrei,Castanopsis fargesii and Michelia maudiae,along an elevation gradient from 609 to 1,207 m in subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forests and analyzed leaf,trunk,and fine root NSCs,carbon(C),nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)concentrations and the relative abundance of SCs.Leaf NSCs increased initially and then decreased,and trunk NSCs increased with increasing elevation.However,root NSCs decreased with increasing elevation.The relative abundance of SCs in leaves and trunks decreased,while the relative abundance of root SCs increased with increasing elevation.No significant correlations between SCs and NSCs in leaves were detected,while there were negative correlations between SCs and NSCs in trunks,roots,and all organs.Hierarchical partitioning analysis indicated that plant C/N and C/P were the main predictors of changes in SCs and NSCs.Our results suggest that tree organs have divergent responses to elevation and that increasing elevation will inhibit the aboveground part growth and enhance the root growth of trees.A tradeoff between the C distribution used for growth and storage was confirmed along the elevation gradient,which is mainly manifested in the"sink"organs of NSCs.Our results provide insight into tree growth in the context of global climate change scenarios in subtropical forest ecosystems.

Colorectal carcinoma(CRC),the third most commonly diagnosed cancer,accounts for 9.7%of all newly diagnosed cancer cases and 9.4%of cancer-related deaths globally.1 Recent studies have demonstrated that post-transcriptional RNA modifications,such as N^(6)-methyladenosine,N^(5)-methylcytosine,and N^(7)-methylguanosine,play critical roles in the regulation of mRNA stability and translation,primary microRNA processing,and lncRNA-protein complex that contributes to the progression of human cancer.

Tillers are unique inflorescence-like branches in grasses,and their number determines the panicle number,plant architecture,and yield(Shang et al.,2021).Tiller formation mainly undergoes axillary meristem(AM)initiation and tiller bud outgrowth(Wang et al.,2018;Yan et al.,2023).The rice(Oryza sativa)KNOX gene OSH1 is expressed in AMs,and an osh1 mutant produces fewer tillers(Tanaka et al.,2015).

High-efficiency ultrasonic assisted drilling of CFRP/Ti stacks under non-separation type and dry conditions

In this study,to address the low efficiency for conventional ultrasonic-assisted drlling(UAD)of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic and titanium alloy(CFRP/Ti)stacks,feasibility experiments of non-separation UAD,in which continuous cutting between the tool and the workpiece occurs at a high feed rate,are carried out.The experimental results indicate that,compared to conventional separation UAD,the non-separation UAD effectively reduces the cutting forces by 24.2%and 1.9%for CFRP stage and 22.1%and 2.6%for the Ti stage at the feed rates of 50 and 70μm/r,respectively.Furthermore,the non-separation UAD significantly improves hole quality,including higher hole diameter accuracy,lower hole surface roughness,and less hole damage.In addition,the non-separation UAD can decrease adhesive tool wear.This study demonstrates that,compared to conventional drilling(CD),the non-separation UAD can effectively improve drilling quality and tool life while maintaining high efficiency.

Efficient and selective H_(2)O_(2)production through uranyl-assisted photocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction process in a uranium-organic framework

Harnessing solar energy by photocatalytically converting oxygen and water into high-value-added H_(2)O_(2)is a promising way of alleviating both environmental and energy issues.It is worth noting that suppressing detrimental side reactions,such as the generation of·O_(2)^(-),is a critical approach to enhancing H_(2)O_(2)production.Herein,a 2-fold interpenetrating 3D uranium-organic framework(YTU-W-1)was developed and introduced for photocatalytic H_(2)O_(2)production.The material demonstrates a different photocatalytic mechanism when employing uranyl as an initiator,as compared with the conventional semiconductor photocatalytic pathway involving photo-generated charge carriers.Benefiting from the strong hydrogen abstraction effect of the U≡O·and the direct one-step oxygen reduction pathway,YTU-W-1 exhibits enhanced photocatalytic performance for H_(2)O_(2)production with yield efficiency of 221μmol h-1g-1.Furthermore,YTU-W-1 displays a high H_(2)O_(2)selectivity of 68%,confirmed by rotating ring-disk electrode(RRDE)measurement.DFTcalculations were used to elucidate the critical role of uranyl in the photocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction for H_(2)O_(2)production.This research introduces an innovative approach to photo-driven H_(2)O_(2)production,underscoring the potential for heterogeneous catalysts to engage in photocatalytic reactions independently of photogenerated charge carriers.

Sorghum(Sorghum bicolor(L.)Moench)is a world cereal crop used in China for producing Baijiu,a distilled spirit.We report a telomere-to-telomere genome assembly of the Baijiu cultivar Hongyingzi,HYZ-T2T,using ultralong reads.The 10 chromosome pairs contained 33,462 genes,of which 93%were functionally annotated.The 20 telomeres and 10 centromeric regions on the HYZ-T2T chromosomes were predicted and two consecutive large inversions on chromosome 2 were characterized.A 65-gene reconstruction of the metabolic pathway of tannins,the flavor substances in Baijiu,was performed and may advance the breeding of sorghum cultivars for Baijiu production.

Hypertension has become a growing public health concern worldwide.In fact,hypertension is commonly associated with increased morbidity and mortality.Currently,oligonucleotide drugs have proven to be promising therapeutic agents for various diseases.In the present study,we aimed to demonstrate that a herbal small RNA(s RNA),XKC-sRNA-h3(B55710460,F221.I000082.B11),exhibits potent antihypertensive effects by targeting angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE)in mice.When compared with captopril,oral administration of the sphingosine(d18:1)-XKC-s RNA-h3 bencaosome more effectively prevented angiotensin II-induced hypertensive cardiac damage and alleviated kidney injury in mice.Such findings indicated that XKC-sRNA-h3 may be a novel orally available ACE inhibitor type oligonucleotide drug for hypertension.

Microwave-induced high-energy sites and targeted energy transition promising for efficient energy deployment

Diverse interactions between microwaves and irradiated media provide a solid foundation for identifying novel organization pathways for energy flow.In this study,a high-energy-site phenomenon and targeted-energy transition mechanism were identified in a particular microwave heating(MH)process.Intense discharges were observed when microwaves were imposed on irregularly sized SiC particles,producing tremendous heat that was 8-fold the amount generated in the discharge-free case.Energy efficiency was thereby greatly improved in the electricity-microwaves-effective heat transition.Meanwhile,the dispersed microwave field energy concentrated in small sites,where local temperatures could reach 2000℃–4000℃,with the energy density reaching up to 4.010^(5) W/kg.This can be called a high-energy site phenomenon which could induce further processes or reactions enhancement by coupling effects of heat,light,and plasma.The whole process,including microwave energy concentration and intense site-energy release,shapes a targeted-energy transition mechanism that can be optimized in a controlled manner through morphology design.In particular,the discharge intensity,frequency,and high-energy sites were strengthened through the fabrication of sharp nano/microstructures,conferring twice the energy efficiency of untreated metal wires.The microwave-induced high-energy sites and targeted energy transition provide an important pathway for high-efficiency energy deployment and may lead to promising applications.

RIS-Assisted Communications in Correlated Rayleigh Channels:Comparison of Training Overhead Reduction Schemes

Channel training in reconfigurable intelligent surface(RIS)-assisted communications is usually conducted in an on-off manner,resulting in unaffordable training time overhead when the number of RIS elements is large.In this paper,for correlated Rayleigh channels,we compare three typical training overhead reduction schemes,namely RIS element selection(Scheme 1),element grouping(Scheme 2),and statistical CSI-based phase shifts design(Scheme3).For Scheme 1 and Scheme 2,we propose two algorithms to select RIS elements(or form element groups) and determine the optimal number of activated elements(or formed groups),based on the channel correlation information only;for Scheme 3,we consider a semi-definite programming-based approach in the literature,and propose an alternative dominant eigenvector-based method for determining the RIS phase shifts vector.Via extensive simulations,we compare the achievable ergodic rates of these schemes versus the signal-to-noise ratio,the channel correlation level,and the element number-to-coherent time ratio,respectively,and discuss possible switching of the three schemes over these system parameters.At last,operation regions of the considered training overhead reduction schemes are shown in the plane characterized by the system parameters,which provides useful guidelines for practical scheme determination.
