Constructing of heterojunction was identified as a feasible way to improve photocatalytic activity of pho-tocatalyst.In this work,a n-p type Bi_(2)WO_(6)/AgInS_(2)S-scheme heterojunction was successfully prepared for organic pollutants degradation.This Bi_(2)WO_(6)/AgInS_(2)S-scheme heterojunction exhibited much higher pho-tocatalytic activity towards Rhodamine B(92.24%,expose to visible light for 60 min),norfloxacin(81.73%,expose to visible light for 90 min)and levofloxacin(87.46%,expose to visible light for 90 min)than pure Bi_(2)WO_(6)and pure AgInS_(2).Toxicity analysis indicated the low environmental toxicity of Rhodamine B degradation intermediates for Rye seeds and Sudangrass seeds germination and growth.Mechanism study displayed that AgInS_(2)and Bi_(2)WO_(6)work as the primary photocatalyst to form·O_(2)−andOH,respectively.The improved photocatalytic activity of the Bi_(2)WO_(6)/AgInS_(2)S-scheme heterojunction was due to the im-proved light response range and intensified carrier separation capability.Additionally,a S-scheme charge transfer mechanism including multiple charge transfer channels was proposed.This work could provide an effective strategy for organic pollutants degradation in wastewater.

As a photochemical reaction that can stiffen the cornea,corneal collagen cross-linking(CXL) is the only promising method of preventing the progress of keratectasia,such as keratoconus and secondary ectasia following refractive surgery. The aim of CXL is to stabilize the underlying condition,with a small chance of visual improvement. Combining CXL with refractive surgery targeting both stabilization and reshaping of the corneal tissue for visual function improvement is a good treatment option. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and unbiased summary of the published research regarding combined CXL and refractive surgery,including measures and results,to help elucidate the future direction of CXL.

Fumarate is a value-added chemical that is widely used in food,medicine,material,and agriculture industries.With the rising attention to the demand for fumarate and sustainable development,many novel alternative ways that can replace the traditional petrochemical routes emerged.The in vitro cell-free multi-enzyme catalysis is an effective method to produce high value chemicals.In this study,a multi-enzyme catalytic pathway comprising three enzymes for fumarate production from low-cost substrates acetate and glyoxylate was designed.The acetyl-CoA synthase,malate synthase,and fumarase from Escherichia coli were selected and the coenzyme A achieved recyclable.The enzymatic properties and optimization of reaction system were investigated,reaching a fumarate yield of 0.34 mM with a conversion rate of 34%after 20 h of reaction.We proposed and realized the conversion of acetate and glyoxylate to fumarate in vitro using a cell-free multi-enzyme catalytic system,thus providing an alternative approach for the production of fumarate.

To guarantee the exact proton dose applied to patients and ensure treatment safety while disrupting and destroying tumor cells,it is essential to accurately monitor the proton beam current in real time during patient treatment.Because clinical treatment requires a proton beam current in the∼nA range,nondestructive beam current monitors(BCMs)are preferred to minimize the degradation of beam quality.However,this poses significant challenges in accurately monitoring such extremely low beam intensities.This study proposes a cavity-type BCM equipped with a dielectric plate to reduce its dimensions and achieve sufficient measurement sensitivity for practical requirements.A prototype cavity BCM was fabricated,and off-line testing was performed using a metal wire to simulate the beam to study its performance.Both the simulation and experi-mental results showed that the cavity BCM could measure ultralow proton beam currents with a resolution up to 0.03 nA.

AIM：To report the clinical results of iontophoresis-assisted epithelium-on corneal crosslinking（I-CXL） using 0.1% riboflavin in distilled water for progressive keratoconus. METHODS：In this prospective clinical study, we examined 94 eyes of 75 patients with progressive keratoconus who were treated with I-CXL using 0.1% riboflavin in distilled water. Best correct visual acuity（BCVA）, Scheimpflug tomography, corneal topography, anterior segment optical coherence tomography, intraocular pressure, and endothelial cell density were evaluated at baseline and 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 mo after I-CXL.RESULTS：After 24 mo I-CXL, compared to the level at baseline, BCVA significantly improved 0.14±0.07（P=0.010）; mean keratometry signifi cantly decreased 0.72±1.97（P=0.021）; maximum keratometry significantly reduced 2.30±5.01（P=0.014）; central keratoconus index significantly reduced 0.04±0.08（P=0.007）. The demarcation line was visible in 83.1% of eyes at 1mo after treatment, with a depth of 298.95±51.97 μm, and gradually indistinguishable. One eye had repeat treatment. Intraocular pressure and endothelial cell density did not change significantly.CONCLUSION：I-CXL using 0.1% riboflavin halts keratoconus progression within 24 mo, resulting in a significant improvement in visual and topographic parameters. Moreover, the depth of the demarcation line is similar to that previously reported in standard epithelium-off CXL procedures.

On the Downshift of Wave Frequency for Bragg Resonance

For surface gravity waves propagating over a horizontal bottom that consists of a patch of sinusoidal ripples,strong wave reflection occurs under the Bragg resonance condition.The critical wave frequency,at which the peak reflection coefficient is obtained,has been observed in both physical experiments and direct numerical simulations to be downshifted from the well-known theoretical prediction.It has long been speculated that the downshift may be attributed to higher-order rippled bottom and free-surface boundary effects,but the intrinsic mechanism remains unclear.By a regular perturbation analysis,we derive the theoretical solution of frequency downshift due to third-order nonlinear effects of both bottom and free-surface boundaries.It is found that the bottom nonlinearity plays the dominant role in frequency downshift while the free-surface nonlinearity actually causes frequency upshift.The frequency downshift/upshift has a quadratic dependence in the bottom/free-surface steepness.Polychromatic bottom leads to a larger frequency downshift relative to the monochromatic bottom.In addition,direct numerical simulations based on the high-order spectral method are conducted to validate the present theory.The theoretical solution of frequency downshift compares well with the numerical simulations and available experimental data.

Riboflavin concentration in corneal stroma after intracameral injection

AIM: To evaluate the enrichment of riboflavin in the corneal stroma after intracameral injection to research the barrier ability of the corneal endothelium to riboflavin in vivo.METHODS: The right eyes of 30 New Zealand white rabbits were divided into three groups. Different concentrations riboflavin-balanced salt solutions(BSS)were injected into the anterior chamber(10 with 0.5%, 10 with 1%, and 10 with 2%). Eight corneal buttons of 8.5mm in diameter from each group were dissected at 30 min after injection and the riboflavin concentrations in the corneal stroma were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) after removing the epithelium and endothelium. The other two rabbits in every group were observed for 24 h and sacrificed. As a comparison, the riboflavin concentrations from 16 corneal stromal samples were determined using HPLC after instillation of 0.1% riboflavin-BSS solution for30 min on the corneal surface(8 without epithelium and 8with intact epithelium).RESULTS: The mean riboflavin concentrations were11.19, 18.97, 25.08, 20.18, and 1.13 μg/g for 0.5%, 1%, 2%,de-epithelialzed samples, and the transepithelial groups,respectively. The color change of the corneal stroma and the HPLC results showed that enrichment with riboflavin similar to classical de-epithelialized corneal collagen crosslinking(CXL) could be achieved by intracameral 1%riboflavin-BSS solution after 30min; the effect appeared to be continuous for at least 30 min.CONCLUSION: Riboflavin can effectively penetrate the corneal stroma through the endothelium after an intracameral injection in vivo, so it could be an enhancing method that could improve the corneal riboflavin concentration in transepithelial CXL.

The Decapentaplegic(Dpp)and Wingless(Wg)signal pathways play important roles in numerous biological processes in Drosophila.The Drosophila vestigial(vg)gene is selectively required for wing imaginal disc cell proliferation,which is essential for the formation of the adult wing and halter structures,and is regulated by Dpp and Wg signaling.Using a Drosophila invasion model of wing epithelium,we showed herein that inhibition of Dpp or Wg signaling promoted cells to migrate across the cell lineage restrictive anterior/posterior(A/P)compartment boundary.Being downstream of both Dpp and Wg signaling,vg can block cell migration induced by loss of either pathway.In addition,suppression of vg is sufficient to induce cell migration across the A/P boundary.Transcriptomic analysis revealed potential downstream genes involved in the cell migration after suppressing vg in the wing disc.We further demonstrated that the c-jun N-terminal kinase(JNK)signaling promoted cell migration induced by vg suppression by upregulating Caspase activity.Taken together,our results revealed the requirement ofVg for suppressing cell migration and clarified how developmental signals collaborate to stabilize cells along the compartment boundary.

Novel models for simulating maize growth based on thermal time and photothermal units: Applications under various mulching practices

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the three major food crops and an important source of carbohydrates for maintaining food security around the world.Plant height (H),stem diameter (SD),leaf area index (LAI) and dry matter (DM) are important growth parameters that influence maize production.However,the combined effect of temperature and light on maize growth is rarely considered in crop growth models.Ten maize growth models based on the modified logistic growth equation (Mlog) and the Mitscherlich growth equation (Mit) were proposed to simulate the H,SD,LAI and DM of maize under different mulching practices based on experimental data from 2015–2018.Either the accumulative growing degree-days (AGDD),helio thermal units (HTU),photothermal units (PTU) or photoperiod thermal units (PPTU,first proposed here) was used as a single driving factor in the models;or AGDD was combined with either accumulative actual solar hours (ASS),accumulative photoperiod response (APR,first proposed here) or accumulative maximum possible sunshine hours (ADL) as the dual driving factors in the models.The model performances were evaluated using seven statistical indicators and a global performance index.The results showed that the three mulching practices significantly increased the maize growth rates and the maximum values of the growth curves compared with non-mulching.Among the four single factor-driven models,the overall performance of the Mlog_(PTU)Model was the best,followed by the Mlog_(AGDD)Model.The Mlog_(PPTU)Model was better than the Mlog_(AGDD)Model in simulating SD and LAI.Among the 10 models,the overall performance of the Mlog_(AGDD–APR)Model was the best,followed by the Mlog_(AGDD–ASS)Model.Specifically,the Mlog_(AGDD–APR)Model performed the best in simulating H and LAI,while the Mlog_(AGDD–ADL)and Mlog_(AGDD–ASS)models performed the best in simulating SD and DM,respectively.In conclusion,the modified logistic growth equations with AGDD and either APR,ASS or ADL as the dual driving factors outperformed the commonly used modified

Numerous recent studies have shown that myeloid-derived suppressor cells(MDSCs),a strongly heterogeneous population of immunosuppressive cells,are dysregulated in the presence of many cancers.MDSCs present different phenotypes and play prominent roles in the tumor microenvironment.To date,gene therapies targeting MDSCs are the most innovative and flexible methods to specifically modify the tumor microenvironment.Here,we summarize current studies related to the phenotypes,functions,and mechanisms of MDSCs and explore the therapeutic landscape of chemokines that affect the balance between subpopulations of MDSCs.
