Fe/S oxidation-coupled arsenic speciation transformation mediated by AMD enrichment culture under different pH conditions

Arsenic(As)speciation transformation in acid mine drainage(AMD)is comprehensively affected by biological and abiotic factors,such as microbially mediated Fe/S redox reactions and changes in environmental conditions(pH and oxidation-reduction potential).However,their combined impacts on arsenic speciation transformation remain poorly studied.Therefore,we explored arsenic transformation and immobilization during pyrite dissolution mediated by AMD enrichment culture under different acidic pH conditions.The results for incubation and mineralogical transformation of solid residues show that in the presence of AMD enrichment culture,pH 2.0,2.5,and 3.0 are more conducive to the formation of jarosites and ferric arsenate,which could immobilize high quantities of dissolved arsenic by adsorption and coprecipitation.The pH conditions significantly affect the initial adsorption of microbial cells to the minerals and the evolution of microbial community structure,further infuencing the biodissolution of pyrite and the release and oxidation process of Fe/S.The results of Fe/S/As speciation transformation of the solid residues show that the transformation of Fe,S,and As in solution is mainly regulated by pH and potential values,which imposed significantly different effects on the formation of secondary minerals and thus arsenic oxidation and immobilization.The above results indicated that arsenic transformation is closely related to the Fe/S oxidation associated with pyrite bio-oxidation,and this correlation is critically regulated by the pH conditions of the system.

Effect of the surface microstructure of arsenopyrite on the attachment of Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans in the presence of dissolved As(Ⅲ)

Understanding bacterial adsorption and the evolution of biofilms on arsenopyrite with different surface structures is of great signific-ance to clarifying the mechanism of microbe-mineral interfacial interactions and the production of acidic mine drainage impacting the environ-ment.In this study,the attachment of Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans cells and subsequent biofilm formation on arsenopyrite with different surface structures in the presence of dissolved As(Ⅲ)was studied.Arsenopyrite slices with a specific surface were obtained by electrochemic-al corrosion at 0.26 V.The scanning electronic microscopy-energy dispersion spectra analyses indicated that the arsenopyrite surface deficient in sulfur and iron obtained by electrochemical treatment was not favorable for the initial adsorption of bacteria,and the addition of As(Ⅲ)in-hibited the adsorption of microbial cells.Epifluorescence microscopy showed that the number of cells attaching to the arsenopyrite surface in-creased with time;however,biofilm formation was delayed significantly when As(Ⅲ)was added.

Photoacoustic dual-comb spectroscopy(DCS),converting spectral information in the optical frequency domain to the audio frequency domain via multi-heterodyne beating,enables background-free spectral measurements with high resolution and broad bandwidth.However,the detection sensitivity remains limited due to the low power of individual comb lines and the lack of broadband acoustic resonators.Here,we develop cavity-enhanced photoacoustic DCS,which overcomes these limitations by using a high-finesse optical cavity for the power amplification of dual-frequency combs and a broadband acoustic resonator with a flat-top frequency response.We demonstrate high-resolution spectroscopic measurements of trace amounts of C2H2,NH3 and CO in the entire telecommunications C-band.The method shows a minimum detection limit of 0.6 ppb C2H2 at the measurement time of 100 s,corresponding to the noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 7×10−10 cm−1.The proposed cavityenhanced photoacoustic DCS may open new avenues for ultrasensitive,high-resolution,and multi-species gas detection with widespread applications.

Modified electronic structure and enhanced hydroxyl adsorption make quaternary Pt-based nanosheets efficient anode electrocatalysts for formic acid-/alcohol-air fuel cells

Surface/interface engineering of a multimetallic nanostructure with diverse electrocatalytic properties for direct liquid fuel cells is desirable yet challenging.Herein,using visible light,a class of quaternary Pt_(1)Ag_(0.1)Bi_(0.16)Te_(0.29)ultrathin nanosheets is fabricated and used as high-performance anode electrocatalysts for formic acid-/alcohol-air fuel cells.The modified electronic structure of Pt,enhanced hydroxyl adsorption,and abundant exterior defects afford Pt_(1)Ag_(0.1)Bi_(0.16)Te_(0.29)/C high intrinsic anodic electrocatalytic activity to boost the power densities of direct formic acid-/methanol-/ethanol-/ethylene glycol-/glycerol-air fuel cells,and the corresponding peak power density of Pt_(1)Ag_(0.1)Bi_(0.16)Te_(0.29)/C is respectively 129.7,142.3,105.4,124.3,and 128.0 mW cm^(-2),considerably outperforming Pt/C.Operando in situ Fourier transform infrared reflection spectroscopy reveals that formic acid oxidation on Pt_(1)Ag_(0.1)Bi_(0.16)Te_(0.29)/C occurs via a CO_(2)-free direct pathway.Density functional theory calculations show that the presence of Ag,Bi,and Te in Pt_(1)Ag_(0.1)Bi_(0.16)Te_(0.29)suppresses CO^(*)formation while optimizing dehydrogenation steps and synergistic effect and modified Pt effectively enhance H_(2)O dissociation to improve electrocatalytic performance.This synthesis strategy can be extended to 43 other types of ultrathin multimetallic nanosheets(from ternary to octonary nanosheets),and efficiently capture precious metals(i.e.,Pd,Pt,Rh,Ru,Au,and Ag)from different water sources.

Extraordinary hot extreme in summer 2022 over the Yangtze River basin modulated by the La Nina condition under global warming

A widespread and prolonged hot extreme hit the Yangtze River basin in summer 2022,with 300 sites established new temperature records and nearly 96%stations endured more than 40 hot days.From the perspective of the combination effect of the global warming and La Nina condition,potential mechanisms of the hot extreme were investigated.Such a record-breaking hot extreme was caused by an extremely strong and westward-shifted western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH).The global warming effect contributed primarily to the abnormal hot days in the Yangtze River basin,coupled with the modulation of the La Nina condition.The sea surface temperature anomaly pattern under La Nina condition favored more convection activities over the western Pacific,encouraging an enhanced and westward-extended WPSH.In addition,an observation-based attribution analysis indicates that anthropogenic warming may increase the probability of such extensively persistent hot extremeby1.8 times.

Track-Pattern-Based Characteristics of Extratropical Transitioning Tropical Cyclones in the Western North Pacific

Based on the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center(RSMC)Tokyo-Typhoon Center best-track data and the NCEP-NCAR reanalysis dataset,extratropical transitioning(ET)tropical cyclones(ETCs)over the western North Pacific(WNP)during 1951–2021 are classified into six clusters using the fuzzy c-means clustering method(FCM)according to their track patterns.The characteristics of the six hard-clustered ETCs with the highest membership coefficient are shown.Most tropical cyclones(TCs)that were assigned to clusters C2,C5,and C6 made landfall over eastern Asian countries,which severely threatened these regions.Among landfalling TCs,93.2%completed their ET after landfall,whereas 39.8%of ETCs completed their transition within one day.The frequency of ETCs over the WNP has decreased in the past four decades,wherein cluster C5 demonstrated a significant decrease on both interannual and interdecadal timescales with the expansion and intensification of the western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH).This large-scale circulation pattern is favorable for C2 and causes it to become the dominant track pattern,owning to it containing the largest number of intensifying ETCs among the six clusters,a number that has increased insignificantly over the past four decades.The surface roughness variation and three-dimensional background circulation led to C5 containing the maximum number of landfalling TCs and a minimum number of intensifying ETCs.Our results will facilitate a better understanding of the spatiotemporal distributions of ET events and associated environment background fields,which will benefit the effective monitoring of these events over the WNP.

Deep genome skimming reveals the hybrid origin of Pseudosasa gracilis (Poaceae: Bambusoideae)

Pseudosasa gracilis(Poaceae:Bambusoideae)is a temperate woody bamboo species endemic to Southcentral China with a narrow distribution.Previous phylogenetic studies revealed an unexpected,isolated phylogenetic position of Ps.gracilis.Here we conducted phylogenomic analysis by sampling populations of Ps.gracilis and its sympatric species Ps.nanunica and Sinosasa polytricha reflecting different genomic signals,by deep genome skimming.Integrating molecular evidence from chloroplast genes and genome-wide SNPs,we deciphered the phylogenetic relationships of Ps.gracilis.Both plastid and nuclear data indicate that Ps.gracilis is more closely related to Sinosasa,which is discordant with the taxonomic treatment.To further explore this molecular-morphological conflict,we screened 411“perfect-copy”syntenic genes to reconstruct phylogenies using both the concatenation and coalescent methods.We observed extensive discordance between gene trees and the putative species tree.A significant hybridization event was detected based on 411 genes from the D subgenome,showing Ps.gracilis was a hybrid descendant between Sinosasa longiligulata and Ps.nanunica,with 63.56%and 36.44%inheritance probabilities of each parent.Moreover,introgression events were detected in the C subgenome between Ps.gracilis and S.polytricha in the same distribution region.Our findings suggest that sympatric hybridization and introgression play a crucial role in the origin of Ps.gracilis.By providing an empirical example of bamboo of hybrid origin using comprehensive analyses based on genomic data from different inheritance systems and morphological characters,our study represents a step forward in understanding of reticulate evolution of bamboos.

Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is an incurable disease characterized by remission-relapse cycles throughout its course.Both Crohn's disease(CD)and ulcerative colitis(UC),the two main forms of IBD,exhibit tendency to develop complications and substantial heterogeneity in terms of frequency and severity of relapse,thus posing great challenges to the clinical management for IBD.Current treatment strategies are effective in different ways in induction and maintenance therapies for IBD.Recent advances in studies of genetics,pharmacogenetics,proteomics and microbiome provide a strong driving force for identifying molecular markers of prognosis and treatment response,which should help clinicians manage IBD patients more effectively,and then,improve clinical outcomes and reduce treatment costs of patients.In this review,we summarize and discuss precision medicine in IBD,focusing on predictive markers of disease course and treatment response,and monitoring indices during therapeutic drug monitoring.

Design methodology,synthesis,and control strategy of the high-speed planetary rover

The planned missions to explore the surfaces of the Moon and Mars require high exploration efficiency,thus imposing new demands on the mobility system of planetary rovers.In this paper,a design method for a high-speed planetary rover(HPR)is proposed,and the representative configurations are modeled and simulated.First,the influence of the planetary surface environment on the design of HPRs is analyzed,and the design factors for HPRs are determined by studying a single-wheel suspension.Second,a design methodology for HPRs is proposed.The adaptive suspension mechanisms of a four-wheeled rover are synthesized using the all-wheel-attachment condition and position and orientation characteristics theory,which are expressed in the form of a graph theory for the increase in elastic components and active joints.Finally,a dynamic model is built,and a simulation is carried out for the proposed rover.The validity of the proposed method and rover is verified,thus highlighting their potential application in future planetary exploration.

Analysis of risk factors of suicidal ideation in adolescent patients with depression and construction of prediction model

BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder is a common mental illness among adolescents and is the largest disease burden in this age group.Most adolescent patients with depression have suicidal ideation(SI);however,few studies have focused on the factors related to SI,and effective predictive models are lacking.AIM To construct a risk prediction model for SI in adolescent depression and provide a reference assessment tool for prevention.METHODS The data of 150 adolescent patients with depression at the First People's Hospital of Lianyungang from June 2020 to December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed.Based on whether or not they had SI,they were divided into a SI group(n=91)and a non-SI group(n=59).The general data and laboratory indices of the two groups were compared.Logistic regression was used to analyze the factors influencing SI in adolescent patients with depression,a nomogram prediction model was constructed based on the analysis results,and internal evaluation was performed.Receiver operating characteristic and calibration curves were used to evaluate the model’s efficacy,and the clinical application value was evaluated using decision curve analysis(DCA).RESULTS There were differences in trauma history,triggers,serum ferritin levels(SF),highsensitivity C-reactive protein levels(hs-CRP),and high-density lipoprotein(HDLC)levels between the two groups(P<0.05).Logistic regression analysis showed that trauma history,predisposing factors,SF,hs-CRP,and HDL-C were factors influencing SI in adolescent patients with depression.The area under the curve of the nomogram prediction model was 0.831(95%CI:0.763–0.899),sensitivity was 0.912,and specificity was 0.678.The higher net benefit of the DCA and the average absolute error of the calibration curve were 0.043,indicating that the model had a good fit.CONCLUSION The nomogram prediction model based on trauma history,triggers,ferritin,serum hs-CRP,and HDL-C levels can effectively predict the risk of SI in adolescent patients with depression.
