The Combined Effects of the Tropical and Extratropical Quasi-biweekly Oscillations on the Record-setting Mei-yu Rainfall in the Summer of 2020

During June-July 2020,the strongest recorded mei-yu rainfall occurred in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.The rainfall processes exhibited an obvious quasi-biweekly(biweekly in brief)variability,and there are altogether five cycles.It is found that the biweekly rainfall cycle mainly arises from the collaborative effects of biweekly variabilities from both the tropics and extratropics.As for the tropics,the biweekly meridional march and retreat of the western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH)is particularly evident.As for the extratropics,geopotential height anomalies near Lake Baikal are active.The former is attributed to the intensified biweekly activity of the southwest-northeast oriented EastAsian Pacific wave train(EAP)originating from the tropical western Pacific,while the latter is associated with the biweekly activities of the eastward propagating Eurasia mid-high latitudinal wave train and the westward propagating North Pacific wave train.Why the biweekly activities of these wave trains intensified is further diagnosed from the perspective of thermodynamical forcing and also from the modulation of interannual background on intraseasonal variability.It is found that the strongest recorded convection anchoring over the tropical western Indian Ocean(IO)triggers anomalous descent over the tropical western Pacific,which modulates the biweekly activity of the EAP.Meanwhile,the anomalous diabatic heating over the IO causes changes of the meridional thermodynamic contrast across the IO to the high latitudes,which modulates the extratropical wave trains.A further diagnosis of barotropic kinetic energy conversion suggests that the active occurrence of two extratropical biweekly wave trains is attributed to the increased efficiency of energy conversion from basic flow.The westward propagation of the extratropical North Pacific wave train is attributed to the weakened and northshifted upper-level westerly,which is caused by the SST warmth near the Kuroshio extension.

2D Q-compensated multi-component elastic Gaussian beam migration

Elastic waves are affected by viscoelasticity during the propagation through the Earth,resulting in energy attenuation and phase distortion,in turn resulting in low seismic imaging accuracy.Therefore,viscoelasticity should be considered in seismic migration imaging.We propose a Q compensated multicomponent elastic Gaussian beam migration(Q-EGBM)method to(1)separate the elastic-wave data into longitudinal(P)and transverse(S)waves to perform PP-wave and PS-wave imaging;(2)recover the amplitude loss caused by attenuation;(3)correct phase distortions caused by dispersion;(4)improve the resolution of migration imaging.In this paper,to accomplish(2),(3),and(4),we derive complex-valued traveltimes in viscoelastic media.The results of numerical experiments using a simple five-layer model and a sophisticated BP gas model show that the method presented here has significant advantages in recovering energy decay and correcting phase distortion,as well as significantly improving imaging resolution.

Cp^*Co(Ⅲ)-catalyzed direct C—H amidation of azines has been developed.This co nversion could proceed smoothly in the absence of external oxidants,acids or bases,with excellent regioselectivity and broad functional group tolerance,CO2 was released as the sole byproduct,thus providing an environmentally benign amidation process.The products obtained are important intermediates in organic synthesis.

A New Lyapunov Based Robust Control for Uncertain Mechanical Systems

We design a new robust controller for uncertain mechanical systems. The inertia matrix0s singularity and upper bound property are first analyzed. It is shown that the inertia matrix may be positive semi-definite due to over-simplified model. Further-more, the inertia matrix0s being uniformly bounded above is also limited. A robust controller is proposed to suppress the effect of uncertainty in mechanical systems with the assumption of uniform positive definiteness and upper bound of the inertia matrix. We theoretically prove that the robust control renders uniform boundedness and uniform ultimate boundedness. The size of the ultimate boundedness ball can be made arbitrarily small by the designer. Simulation results are presented and discussed.

Static superconducting gantry‑based proton CT combined with X‑ray CT as prior image for FLASH proton therapy

Proton FLASH therapy with an ultra-high dose rate is in urgent need of more accurate treatment plan system(TPS)to promote the development of proton computed tomography(CT)without intrinsic error compared with the transformation from X-ray CT.This paper presents an imaging mode of proton CT based on static superconducting gantry different from the conventional rotational gantry.The beam energy for proton CT is fixed at 350 MeV,which is boosted by a compact proton linac from 230 MeV,and then delivered by the gantry to scan the patient’s body for proton imaging.This study demonstrates that the static superconducting gantry-based proton CT is effective in clinical applications.In particular,the imaging mode,which combines the relative stopping power(RSP)map from X-ray CT as prior knowledge,can produce much a higher accuracy RSP map for TPSs and positioning and achieve ultra-fast image for real-time image-guided radiotherapy.This paper presents the conceptual design of a boosting linac,static superconducting gantry and proton CT imaging equipment.The feasibility of energy enhancement is verified by simulation,and results from Geant4 simulations and reconstruction algorithms are presented,including the simulation verification of the advantage of the imaging mode.

The default mode network is affected in the early stage of simian immunodeficiency virus infection:a longitudinal study

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome infection can lead to cognitive dysfunction represented by changes in the default mode network.Most recent studies have been cross-sectional and thus have not revealed dynamic changes in the default mode network following acquired immune deficiency syndrome infection and antiretroviral therapy.Specifically,when brain imaging data at only one time point are analyzed,determining the duration at which the default mode network is the most effective following antiretroviral therapy after the occurrence of acquired immune deficiency syndrome.However,because infection times and other factors are often uncertain,longitudinal studies cannot be conducted directly in the clinic.Therefore,in this study,we performed a longitudinal study on the dynamic changes in the default mode network over time in a rhesus monkey model of simian immunodeficiency virus infection.We found marked changes in default mode network connectivity in 11 pairs of regions of interest at baseline and 10 days and 4 weeks after virus inoculation.Significant interactions between treatment and time were observed in the default mode network connectivity of regions of interest pairs area 31/V6.R and area 8/frontal eye field(FEF).L,area 8/FEF.L and caudal temporal parietal occipital area(TPOC).R,and area 31/V6.R and TPOC.L.ART administered 4 weeks after infection not only interrupted the progress of simian immunodeficiency virus infection but also preserved brain function to a large extent.These findings suggest that the default mode network is affected in the early stage of simian immunodeficiency virus infection and that it may serve as a potential biomarker for early changes in brain function and an objective indicator for making early clinical intervention decisions.

Molecular dynamic simulation and transmission electron microscopy(TEM)characterization was employed to investigate the{1012}twinning mechanism in magnesium.A partial dislocation assisted twinning nucleation mechanism was proposed based on simulation results,in which the twin lattice was reconstructed from parental matrix by two-step sweeping of partial dislocations on different close packed planes from matrix and the subsequently formed twin precursor respectively.A{101^(-)2}twin precursor was observed adjacent to matrix/twin interface by a spherical aberration corrected TEM,which indicated the hexagonal-close-packed(hep)matrix-quasi face-centered cubic(fee)twinning precursorsh.c.p twin transformation sequence during{101^(-)2}twinning process.

Design,fabrication,and cold test of an S-band high-gradient accelerating structure for compact proton therapy facility

An S-band high-gradient accelerating structure is designed for a proton therapy linear accelerator(linac)to accommodate the new development of compact,singleroom facilities and ultra-high dose rate(FLASH)radiotherapy.To optimize the design,an efficient optimization scheme is applied to improve the simulation efficiency.An S-band accelerating structure with 2856 MHz is designed with a low beta of 0.38,which is a difficult structure to achieve for a linac accelerating proton particles from 70 to 250 MeV,as a high gradient up to 50 MV/m is required.A special design involving a dual-feed coupler eliminates the dipole field effect.This paper presents all the details pertaining to the design,fabrication,and cold test results of the S-band high-gradient accelerating structure.

BACKGROUND Dopamine and cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cAMP)-regulated phosphop-rotein with an apparent Mr of 32000(DARPP-32)is a protein that is involved in regulating dopamine and cAMP signaling pathways in the brain.However,recent studies have shown that DARPP-32 is also expressed in other tissues,including colorectal cancer(CRC),where its function is not well understood.AIM To explore the effect of DARPP-32 on CRC progression.METHODS The expression levels of DARPP-32 were assessed in CRC tissues using both quantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry assays.The proliferative capacity of CRC cell lines was evaluated with Cell Counting Kit-8 and 5-ethynyl-2’-deoxyuridine assays,while apoptosis was measured by flow cytometry.The migratory and invasive potential of CRC cell lines were deter-mined using wound healing and transwell chamber assays.In vivo studies involved monitoring the growth rate of xenograft tumors.Finally,the underlying molecular mechanism of DARPP-32 was investigated through RNA-sequencing and western blot analyses.RESULTS DARPP-32 was frequently upregulated in CRC and associated with abnormal clinicopathological features in CRC.Overexpression of DARPP-32 was shown to promote cancer cell proliferation,migration,and invasion and reduce apoptosis.DARPP-32 knockdown resulted in the opposite functional effects.Mechanistically,DARPP-32 may regulate the phosphoinositide 3-kinase(PI3K)/AKT signaling pathway in order to carry out its biological function.CONCLUSION DARPP-32 promotes CRC progression via the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

Natural variation in the promoter of OsHMA3 contributes to differential grain cadmium accumulation between Indica and Japonica rice

Rice is a major source of cadmium(Cd) intake for Asian people. Indica rice usually accumulates more Cd in shoots and grains than Japonica rice. However, underlying genetic bases for differential Cd accumulation between Indica and Japonica rice are still unknown. In this study, we cloned a quantitative trait locus(QTL) grain Cd concentration on chromosome 7(GCC7) responsible for differential grain Cd accumulation between two rice varieties by performing QTL analysis and map-based cloning. We found that the two GCC7 alleles, GCC7PA64s and GCC793-11, had different promoter activity of OsHMA3,leading to different OsHMA3 expression and different shoot and grain Cd concentrations. By analyzing the distribution of different haplotypes of GCC7 among diverse rice accessions, we discovered that the high and low Cd accumulation alleles, namely GCC793-11 and GCC7PA64s, were preferentially distributed in Indica and Japonica rice,respectively. We further showed that the GCC7PA64sallele can be used to replace the GCC793-11 allele in the super cultivar 93-11 to reduce grain Cd concentration without adverse effect on agronomic traits. Our results thus reveal that the QTL GCC7 with sequence variation in the OsHMA3 promoter is an important determinant controlling differential grain Cd accumulation between Indica and Japonica rice.
