Investigation of synergistic antibacterial effect of organic acids and ultrasound against pathogen biofilms on lettuce

The aim of this study was to investigate the inactivation effect of organic acids and ultrasound against Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes biofilms on the surface of lettuce leaves and to determine the effect of these inactivation treatments on the quality characteristics of the *** leaves with biofilms formed following inoculation with *** and *** were treated individually or simultaneously with ultrasound and different organic acids(acetic acid,malic acid,citric acid and lactic acid)for periods of 10,30 and 60 *** treatments caused synergistic and antagonistic inactivation of pathogen *** addition,the anti-biofilm effect of combined treatments was found to be higher compared with a single *** an increase in treatment time from 10 min to 60 min,biofilm detachment rate was increased on the surface of the *** reduction in *** and *** biofilms varied from 0.43 to 5.54 log CFU/cm^(2) and from 0.40 to 4.23 log CFU/cm^(2),*** acid and malic acid showed stronger anti-biofilm activities than the other organic *** these results indicate that biofilm inactivation on lettuce samples depends on target microbial species,the type of organic acid,the treatment time,and ***,decontamination treatments for 60 min did not adversely affect the colour,texture or sensory quality of the *** conclusion,the combined treatment of ultrasound and organic acid is suggested as a promising hurdle technology in order to remove pathogen biofilms from fresh produce.

Essential oils are effective antimicrobials on important some pathogenic bacteria and can be added packaging materials due to absorb various surfaces. In this study, the aim is to determinate of antimicrobial effects of methyl cellulose films with containing various proportions thyme, rosemary, coriander, basil and pimento berry oils （1%, 2%, 3% and 4% g/cc） against important bacteria as a surface contaminant Listeria innocua by in vitro. For this purpose, 1 cm diameter discs were cut from methyl cellulose films containing essential oils and inhibition zone diameter which were measured by the agar diffusion method. As the results of these analyses, all prepared active edible methyl cellulose films were antimicrobial effects on Listeria innocua. The most powerful antimicrobial effect achieved with methyl cellulose film including coriander oil on Listeria innocua. And also the weakest antimicrobial effect achieved with methyl cellulose film including rosemary oil on Listeria. All results were significant by statistically （p 〈 0.01） and all analyses were replicated in three times.

In this study, a novel three functional chain extender （TATATRIOL） was synthesized from the reaction of 1,3,5- tri（prop-2-en-1-yl）-1,3,5-triazinane-2,4,6-trione （TATA） with 2-sulfanylethanol. Then new thermoplastic polyurethanes （TPUs） were synthesized by a one-step bulk polymerization from the reaction of 1,1＇-methanediylbis（4- isocyanatocyclohexane）（H12MDI）, a poly（ethylene adipate） based polyester polyol and a chain extender. Butane-l,4-diol （BD） and the newly synthesized monomer, TATATRIOL, were used as chain extenders. The effects of TATATRIOL on the properties of the TPU were investigated and compared to those of the TPU prepared with BD. The TPUs which derived from the sulfur containing chain extender displayed lower modulus and high elongation at break values than the analogous TPUs derived from BD. Moreover sulfur containing TPUs exhibited higher thermal stability.

Determination of Rennet Clotting Time by Texture Analysis Method

In this study, texture analysis method was used for the determination of rennet flocculation time (tfloc) and rennet clotting time (tclot) of rennet-induced reconstitued milk samples with different CaCl2 concentrations. The rennet flocculation time (RFT) and rennet clotting time (RCT) were also determined by using the Berridge test and sensory evaluation. The hardness value versus renneting time curves derived from texture analysis gave a good modified exponential relationship for each CaCl2 concentration and the curves were used to calculate flocculation time and clotting time parameters. It was found that the parameters (tfloc and tclot) appeared strongly correlated with RFT and RCT, respectively. Texture analysis was proved as a suitable method to control the rennet-induced coagulation and determine the rennet clotting time. It was also determined that enrichment of milk with CaCl2 leaded to a decrease in flocculation and clotting times and an increase in rate of clotting and gel hardness.

AIM: To evaluate survival data in patients with gastric cancer in relation to postoperative adjuvant therapy and survival determinantsMETHODS: A total of 201 patients(mean ± SD age: 56.0 ± 11.9 years, 69.7% were males) with gastric carcinoma who were operated and followed up at Lutfi Kirdar Kartal Training and Research Hospital between 1998 and 2010 were included in this retrospective study. Follow up was evaluated divided into two consecutive periods(before 2008 and 2008-2010, respectively) based on introduction of 3-D conformal technique in radiotherapy at our clinic in 2008. Data on patient demographics, clinical and histopathological characteristics of gastric carcinoma and the type of treatment applied after surgery [postoperative adjuvant treatment protocols including chemoradiotherapy(CRT) and chemotherapy(CT), supportive therapy or follow up without any treatment] were recorded. The median duration and determinants of local recurrence free(LRF) survival, distant metastasis free(DMF) survival and overall survival were evaluated in the overall population as well as with respect to follow up years [1998-2008(n = 127) vs 2008-2010(n = 74)].RESULTS: Median duration for LRF survival, DMF survival and overall survival were 31.9, 24.1 and 31.9 mo, respectively in patients with postoperative adjuvant CRT. No significant difference was noted in median duration for LRF survival, DMF survival and overall survival with respect to treatment protocols in the overall population and also with respect to followed up periods. In the overall population, CT protocols FUFA [5-fluorouracil(400 mg/m2) and leucovorin-folinic acid(FA, 20 mg/m2)](29.9 mo) and UFT + Antre [a fixed combination of the oral FU prodrug tegafur(flouroprymidine, FT, 300 mg/m2 per day) with FA(Antrex?), 15 mg tablet, two times a day](42.5 mo) was significantly associated with longer LRF survival times than other CT protocols(P = 0.036), while no difference was noted between CT protocols in terms of DMF surviv

Nowadays, internet-based surveys are increasingly used for data collection, because their usage is simple and cheap. Also they give fast access to a large group of respondents. There are many factors affecting internet surveys, such as measurement, survey design and sampling selection bias. The sampling has an important place in selection bias in internet survey. In terms of sample selection, the type of access to internet surveys has several limitations. There are internet surveys based on restricted access and on voluntary participation, and these are characterized by their implementation according to the type of survey. It can be used probability and non-probability sampling, both of which may lead to biased estimates. There are different ways to correct for selection biases;poststratification or weighting class adjustments, raking or rim weighting, generalized regression modeling and propensity score adjustments. This paper aims to describe methodological problems about selection bias issues and to give a review in internet surveys. Also the objective of this study is to show the effect of various correction techniques for reducing selection bias.

The Influence of Heat Treatment on Interaction of Green Tea Flavonoids with Milk Proteins

Several heat treatment norms are applied in the dairy industry during the manufacture of various products. The knowledge on the influence of temperature on the proteins-flavonoid binding is critical for optimization of process conditions. The aim of this study was to establish the effect of heat treatment on the interaction between milk proteins and flavonoids and also determine when to apply heat treatment. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) analysis revealed that free flavonoids decreased in the presence of milk proteins and a binding ratio (%) was calculated based on this decrease. Three different heat treatment norms were selected (80, 85 and 90℃×10 min). Analyses were carried out in both sodium caseinate and skimmed milk samples to observe the possible effect of milk serum proteins on the interaction. The binding ratio between flavonoids and proteins was found to be higher in the samples where green tea extract (GTE) was added before heat treatment than in the samples where GTE was added after heat treatment in both the skimmed milk and sodium caseinate systems. Results of protein surface hydrophobicity (PSH) index and protein partition also demonstrated that heat treatment must be applied after the addition of GTE to improve the amount of GTE binding to milk proteins.

A Literature Review: Pharmaceutical Care an Evolving Role at Community Pharmacies in Pakistan

The aim of this paper is to highlight the role of pharmaceutical care at community pharmacies in Pakistan. The paper draws on the literature related to current dispensing practices at community pharmacies in developing countries as well as in Pakistan. There are approximately 63,000 community pharmacies in Pakistan, and according to an estimate, 80% of the medicines are being distributed through this channel to majority of the population. They often lack adequate facilities, staffing and equipments. Absence of pharmacists and their roles being performed by the non-qualified personnel working at community pharmacies are a common practice. There are 8102 pharmacists who are categorized as a category, 31,000 pharmacy technicians categorized in B & C category in the country. There is a shortage of pharmacists who could be engaged for ensuring good pharmacy practices. There are only ten percent of the total pharmacists who work at community pharmacies in the country according to the Pharmacy Council of Pakistan. All kind of medicines are freely available irrespective of their status as prescription or over the counter drugs. The paper highlights that the professional role of pharmacist in hospitals and community pharmacies is switching from dispensing and sale of drugs, to patient counselling. But, the concept of pharmaceutical care at community pharmacies has not been acknowledged yet in Pakistan. The process of prescription handling is poor and patients are often treated without a proper prescription. Prescription validation, drug labeling and patient counseling are the missing components in effective patient management at the community pharmacies. The paper concludes that although laws exist, but due to lack of accountability and weak regulatory framework their proper implementation is not witnessed. Usage as Complementary Correspondence Analysis and Logistic Regression in a Scientific Survey on Self Healing Methods

The aim of this study is to show complementary usage of logistic and correspondence analysis in a research subject to self-healing methodologies. Firstly, the number of the variables is reduced by logistic regression according to relationship between dependent and independent variables and then research carries on searching variables. The relationship among the behaviours of individuals and their demographic characteristics is modelled by logistic regression and shown graphically by correspondence analysis. In application, first of all, the effect of age, sex, marital status, education level, occupation and income level and present health condition, on appreciating self-health, is explained by a model. As a result of that model, it can be said that the effect of age, occupation and present health condition is reasonable. After analysing that model, the relationship between categorical variables (age, sex, occupation, preferred precautions, and worth of personal health) is shown graphically by multiple correspondence analysis.
