Geomorphological processes and landforms of glacier forelands in the upper Aktru river basin(Gornyi Altai), russia: evidence for rapid recent retreat and paraglacial adjustment

The glaciers in the Aktru river basin of Gornyi Altai, russia currently represent some of the fastest receding glaciers in the world. Formation of the morainic complexes closest to the contemporary glaciers in the Aktru river basin took place during the 17^th-18^th centuries with recession commencing at the end of the 18 th century. Coupled with this glacial retreat, earth surface processes and vegetation succession are responding to shape the glacier forelands. This article presents the first geomorphological maps for the upper reaches of the Aktru river basin and focuses on the geomorphological landforms that occur in the rapidly changing glacier forelands. Geomorphological mapping is difficult in steep mountainous regions and, thus, mapping was completed using satellite imagery, field mapping and observations coupled with highresolution aerial photography obtained from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs). Critical steps of the procedure used to process UAV imagery and difficulties encountered in this mountainous terrain are noted. The acquired spatial data enable the mapping and classification of small-scale transient geomorphological features such as talus, glacial and glaciofluvial landforms. Their dynamics provide insights into supraglacial and subglacial processes of the glaciers of the Aktru river basin and subsequent paraglacial adjustment. The presented highresolution spatial data, which can also be obtained at high temporal resolutions in the future, can act as a reference frame for geomorphologists and ecologists studying the temporal evolution of glacier forelands of the Aktru river basin during paraglacial adjustment and subsequent colonisation and stabilisation by biota.

From non-alcoholic fatty liver disease to metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease:rationale and implications for the new terminology

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)was the term first used to describe hepatic steatosis in patients with the metabolic syndrome who did not consume excess amounts of *** liver disease(ALD)has many similarities to NAFLD in both pathogenesis and *** entity is now the most prevalent chronic liver disease worldwide as a consequence of the epidemic of *** to incorporate the importance of the metabolic syndrome in the development of steatosis resulted in the renaming of NAFLD as metabolic-associated fatty liver *** new term,however,has the disadvantage of the use of terms that may be perceived as *** terms fatty and non-alcoholic have negative connotations in many *** addition,non-alcoholic is not usually a term applicable to pediatric cases of hepatic ***,an international collaborative effort,with participants from 56 countries,after a global consultation process,recommended to change the nomenclature to steatotic liver disease-including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease,metabolic-associated steatohepatitis and metabolic dysfunction-associated *** new terminology is consistent with most of the previously published epidemiological studies and will have a major impact on research into diagnosis,prognosis and treatment.

Wave propagation in parallel-plate waveguides filled with nonlinear left-handed material

A theoretical investigation of field components for transverse electric mode in the parallel-plate waveguides has been studied. In this analysis two different types of waveguide structures have been discussed, i.e., （a） normal good/perfect conducting parallel-plate waveguide filled with nonlinear left-handed material and （b） high-temperature-superconducting parallel-plate waveguide filled with nonlinear left-handed material. The dispersion relations of transverse electric mode have also been discussed for these two types of waveguide structures.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms:Prevalence,sociodemographics and treatment patterns in the adult Israeli population

AIM： To evaluate the prevalence and sociodemographics of gastroesophageal reflux disease （GErD） symptoms and to identify treatment patterns among GErD patients. METHODS： A telephone survey of a representative sample of the adult Israeli population was conducted. The questionnaire included detailed sociodemographics, history of GErD symptoms and the various treatments used. rESULTS： The survey included 2027 subjects. Twice weekly, once weekly and monthly GEP, D symptoms were reported by 8.4%, 12.5% and 21.5% of subjects, respectively. There was no difference in prevalence between men and woman; however, GErD symptoms were significantly more prevalent within the older age group and lower socioeconomic status. Among those reporting weekly symptoms, a quarter did not use any kind of therapy and another quarter used various traditional remedies （e.g. soda, milk, almonds, etc.）. Antacids were used by 35.1%, H2 blockers by 13.2% and PPIs by 17.5%. CONCLUSION： We found that 12.5% of the adult Israeli population experience weekly GErD symptoms. GErD prevalence and sociodemographics are similar to those described in other Western countries, and treatment is still suboptimal.

Preparation and antibacterial activities of metal complexes of norfloxacin

The metal complexes of norfloxacin were prepared, and their structures were characterized using spectroscopic techniques like Ir, 1H NMr, UV, atomic absorption, and CHN analysis. The solubility, melting point, and conductance measurements were also performed. These studies suggested that norfloxacin formed complexes with the metals utilizing carbonyl oxygen atom of the ring and carboxylic group oxygen atom. The antibacterial activities of these metal complexes against 14 different Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms were studied by the disk susceptibility method. It was observed that the complexes of norfloxacin with magnesium, calcium, cobalt, nickel, and copper showed improved activity compared with the stated drug.

Isolation, characterization and culture of Thy1-positive cells from fetal rat livers

AIM： To investigate whether Thyl recognizes oval cells in the fetal liver and to characterize the cultured Thy1 selected cells from E14 rat livers. METHODS： Thyl populations were analyzed by fluorescence activated cell sorter analysis. Thyl positive cells were isolated using magnetic beads. Hepatic markers were detected by Western blotting, immunocytochemistry and rT-PCr. rESULTS： The percentage of Thyl-positive cells decreased during early development of fetal rat liver （E13-E16）. E14 fetal livers contained 7.8% Thy1 positive cells, of which 61% were positive for α-fetoprotein （AFP） and 25% expressed albumin. The Thy1＋ population expressed oval cell markers c-Kit and CXCr4, liver enriched-transcription factors HNF1α and HNF6, hepatocytic markers albumin, AFP and cytokeratin 18, and biliary marker cytokeratin 19. Thy1- selected cells formed only mesenchymal colonies when plated on collagen and in serum-containing media. Thyl selected cells were able to form hepatic colonies positive for HNF1α, HNF6, albumin, AFP, cytokeratin 18, cytokeratin 19 and glycogen, when grown on STO feeder layers in serum free-media. CONCLUSION： Oval cells positive for Thyl are present in early liver embryonic stages.

To gain insight into the genetic regulation of lipid metabolism in tomato, we conducted metabolic trait loci （mQTL） analysis following the lipidomic profiling of fruit pericarp and leaf tissue of the Solanum pennellii introgression lines （IL）. To enhance mapping resolution for selected fruit-specific mQTL, we profiled the lipids in a subset of independently derived S. pennellii backcross inbred lines, as well as in a nearsogenic sub-iL population. We identified a putative lecithin：cholesterol acyltransferase that controls the levels of several lipids, and two members of the class III lipase family, LIP1 and LIP2, that were associated with decreased levels of diacylglycerols （DAGs） and triacylglycerols （TAGs）. Lipases of this class cleave fatty acids from the glycerol backbone of acylglycerols. The released fatty acids serve as precursors of flavor volatiles. We show that LIP1 expression correlates with fatty acid-derived volatile levels. We further confirm the function of LIP1 in TAG and DAG breakdown and volatile synthesis using transgenic plants. Taken together, our study extensively characterized the genetic architecture of Upophilic compounds in tomato and demonstrated at molecular level that release of free fatty acids from the glycerol backbone can have a major impact on downstream volatile synthesis.

Metal complexes of ciprofloxacin were synthesized to study the effect of the drug on the metals present in the body or metals co-administered as multivitamin therapy. These complexes were then characterized by Ir, UV, 1 H NMr, CHN and AA analyses. It was found that the metals coordinated through the β-keto carboxylic group, forming four coordinated complexes having square planar geometry. The effect of the antibacterial activity of these complexes with respect to parent drug was also studied against 14 different Gram + ve and Gram – ve organisms by the disk susceptibility technique. Some complexes showed improve activity as compared with the stated drug.

Effect of erythromycin on image quality and transit time of capsule endoscopy: A two-center study

AIM: To compare the effect of oral erythromycin vs no preparation with prokinetics on the transit time and the image quality of capsule endoscopy (CE) in evaluating small bowel (SB) pathology. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, blinded (to the type of preparation) review of 100 CE studies, 50 with no preparation with prokinetics from one medical center (Group A) and 50 from another center with administration of a single dose of 200 mg oral erythromycin 1 h prior to CE (Group B). Gastric, SB and total transit times were calculated, the presence of bile in the duodenum was scored, as was cleanliness within the proximal, middle and distal intestine. rESULTS: The erythromycin group had a slightly shorter gastric transit time (21 min vs 28 min, with no statistical significance). SB transit time was similar for both groups (all P > 0.05). Total transit time was almost identical in both groups. The rate of incomplete examination was 16% for Group A and 10% for Group B (P = 0.37). Bile and cleanliness scores in different parts of the intestine were similar for the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Preparation for capsule endoscopy with erythromycin does not affect SB or total transit time. It tends to reduce gastric transit time, but it does not increase the cecum-reaching rate. Erythromycin does not adversely affect image quality. We consider the routine use of oral erythromycin preparation as being unjustified, although it might be considered in patients with known prolonged gastric emptying time.
