Ploidy-, gender-, and dose-dependent alteration of selected biomarkers in Clarias gariepinus treated with benzo[a]pyrene

Naturally-occurring and artificially-induced polyploids have been documented in various fish species but to date no comparison has been reported of the impacts of ploidy on fish biomarker responses to organic *** study describes effects of ploidy,gender,and dose on biliary fluorescent aromatic compound（FAC） concentrations,hepatic ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase（EROD） and glutathione S-transferase（GST） activities in one of the most commonly cultured warm-water species,the African catfish Clarias *** matured male and female diploid and triploid fish were intraperitoneally（i.p.）injected with 0,5 or 25 mg/kg benzo[a]pyrene（BaP） and liver and gallbladder were sampled48 hr *** significant differences were found between ploidies in bile concentrations of7,8 dihydrodiolbenzo[a]pyrene（7,8D BaP）,1-hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene（1-OH BaP） or3-hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene（3-OH BaP）.However,concentrations of the biliary FACs did differ between males and females at different dose of injection with generally higher concentrations in females at the low dose of BaP and higher concentrations in males at the higher BaP *** EROD activity did not exhibit gender-dependent difference,whereas it was significantly higher in triploids than *** activities were not significantly influenced by any of the tested *** work advanced our understanding of the role of ploidy,gender,and dose in biotransformation of pollutants in fish.

Structural,optical and magnetic properties are reported for new synthesized perovskite ***_(0.3)La_(0.7)Ti_(0.3)Fe_(0.7)O_(3) and Ba_(0.1)La_(0.9)Ti_(0.1)Fe_(0.9)O_(3) compositions were prepared via solid state reaction.X-ray analysis confirms that both compositions show feature of perovskite *** refinement method was used to confirm the phase formation and investigate the structure and space *** study demonstrates the formation of orthorhombic structure with Pnma space group for Ba_(0.3)La_(0.7)Ti_(0.3)Fe_(0.7)O_(3) while the composition Ba_(0.1)La_(0.9)Ti_(0.1)Fe_(0.9)O_(3) structure adopts Pbnm ***–vis spectroscopy measurements show very broad and intense UV–visible light absorption,the estimated band gap ranges between 2.07 and 2.15 *** measurements were carried out for the compositions Ba_(0.3)La_(0.7)Ti_(0.3)Fe_(0.7)O_(3) and Ba_(0.1)La_(0.9)Ti_(0.1)Fe_(0.9)O_(3).The hysteresis loops of both samples at 300 and 10 K show a strong ferromagnetic *** temperature dependent magnetization at 0.05 T under field-cooled(FC)and zero field cooled(ZFC)modes shows magnetic frustration or spin glass-like behavior.

Range formula based on angle of dispersion and nozzle configuration from an impact sprinkler

Jet breakup and dispersion from impact sprinkler are mainly influenced by the configurations of nozzle and dispersion *** on the structure,different types of nozzles were designed and tested with a pointed tip dispersion device under low pressure *** were performed using High-Speed Photographic technique,and Matlab computation program was established and applied to determine the initial jet breakup length and angle of dispersion from the *** sprinkler range decreased with the increase in diameter of nozzle,and the largest range of 15.1 m was produced from sprinkler with 6 mm nozzle size under a pressure of 150 *** angle of dispersion decreased with the increase of jet velocity,the spray coverage from sprinkler with 6 mm nozzle size was 1478 mm under 150 kPa,and was not statistically different when the pressure was increased.A new range formula was established for sprinkler with dispersion device through curve fitting of the parameters of initial jet breakup length,angle of dispersion,nozzle size and working *** new formula was reliable for calculating range with a relative error less than 3%.Since the formula is based on the angle of dispersion,it could be useful to estimate uniformity of water distribution in sprinkler irrigated fields.

Pharmacological activity,phytochemical analysis and toxicity of methanol extract of Etlingera elatior(torch ginger) flowers

Objective:To elucidate its pharmacological activities and medicinal potential of extract of Etlingera elatior（***）.Methods:Phytochemical screening of the flower extract was done to determine the phytochemical in the *** pharmacological study included the determination of antimicrobial activity and minimum inhibitory concentration（MIC） of metabolic flower *** antimicrobial activity of the extract was tested against medically important bacterial,yeast and fungal *** from that,the methanolic extract of *** flower was further tested in vivo toxicity using the brine shrimp lethality ***,the flower extract was qualitatively screened for their free radical scavenging activity by 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl radical（DPPH） ***:The extract was effective on tested microorganisms and MIC values were in the range of 1.563-50.000 mg/*** brine shrimp lethality test exhibited no significant toxicity(LC50= 2.52 mg/mL) against Artemia *** *** flower extract with high LC50 value signified that this plant is not toxic to *** the phytochemical screening of the flower extract revealed the presence of the following compounds: flavonoids,terpenoids,saponin,tannins and carbohydrates whereas,alkaloids,anthraquinone and reducing sugars were *** concentration of the flower extract required for 50% inhibition of DPPH radical scavenging effect(IC50) were 9.14 mg/mL and 8.08 mg/mL for butylated hydroxytoluene 8.08 mg/***:These findings indicate that the extract of *** flower possesses pharmacological properties and potential to develop natural products based pharmaceuticals products.

Water saving is an essential part of sprinkler irrigation owing to the impact of climate change and rising energy *** review highlights the technologies that are emerging in sprinkler irrigation to optimize crop *** there have been notable advances in irrigation,the continued progress has occurred by the combination of current status with the postulation of new ideas such as conversion of high-pressure sprinkler to low-pressure ones,incorporation of smart controllers in sprinkler irrigation *** enhance the adoption of these technologies,research on the dispersion device is needed to improve the performance of impact sprinklers to efficiently operate at low-pressure *** is also important to study how water savings estimates based on water use,irrigated area,longevity of saving,and level of wasteful irrigation prior to the retrofit obtained from field trials can be extrapolated to other areas with different *** in the development of optimized method for irrigation scheduling is *** review emphasizes that the status of technologies should be considered a continuum,building on earlier knowledge and progress,and hopefully leading toward optimized crop production in sprinkler irrigated areas.

Biochar:An Emerging Panacea for Remediation of Soil Contaminants from Mining,Industry and Sewage Wastes

Mine tailings, waste rock piles, acid mine drainage, industrial wastewater, and sewage sludge have contaminated a vast area of cultivable and fallow lands, with a consequence of deterioration of soil and water quality and watercourses due to the erosion of contaminated soils for absence of vegetative cover. High concentrations of toxic elements, organic contaminants, acidic soils, and harsh climatic conditions have made it difficult to re-establish vegetation and produce crops there. Recently, a significant body of work has focussed on the suitability and potentiality of biochar as a soil remediation tool that increases seed emergence, soil and crop productivity, above ground biomass, and vegetation cover on mine tailings, waste rock piles, and industrial and sewage waste- contaminated soils by increasing soil nutrients and water-holding capacity, amelioration of soil acidity, and stimulation of microbial diversity and functions. This review addresses： i） the functional properties of biochar, and microbial cycling of nutrients in soil; ii） bioremediation, especially phytoremediation of mine railings, industrial waste, sewage sludge, and contaminated soil using biochar; iii） impact of biochar on reduction of acid production, acid mine drainage treatment, and geochemical dynamics in mine railings; and iv） treatment of metal and organic contaminants in soils using biochar, and restoration of degraded land.

Foraging ecology and occurrence of 7 sympatric babbler species （Timaliidae） in the lowland rainforest of Borneo and peninsular Malaysia

Understanding foraging strategies of birds is essential to understanding mechanisms of their community assembly. To provide such information on a key Southeast Asian rainforest family, the babblers （Timaliidae）, we evaluated foraging behavior and abundance in 7 morphologically and behaviorally similar sympatric species （Cyanoderma erythropterum, C. rufifrons, Stachyris maculata, S. nigricollis, S. poliocephala, Macronus ptilosus, and Mixornis gularis） in 5 habitats defined by structural complexity：（1） continuous native rainforest, （2） logged native rainforest fragments, （3） mature industrial tree plantation, （4） young industrial plantation, and （5） oil palm plantation. Enough data were obtained to compare abundance in all 7 species and foraging behavior in 5. All species were common in forest fragments and mature industrial tree plantations and less so in continuous rainforest and young industrial plantations; only M. gularis occurred in oil palm. In terms of foraging, M. gularis was the greatest generalist; C. rufifrons foraged mainly on live leaves in the forest midstory; and S. maculata, C. eryth- ropterum, and M. ptilosus foraged mainly on dead leaves suspended in understory vegetation at sig- nificantly different heights. The dead-leaf substrate depends on a rich supply of falling leaves and ex- tensive understory structure, conditions most common in native forest and old industrial plantations, and less so in mature forest, young plantations, and oil palm. Because of the importance of foraging data to understanding and managing biodiversity, we encourage the development of foraging fields in eBird （***）, so that birdwatchers may help collect these relatively rare data.

Multiobjective car relocation problem in one-way carsharingsystem

In this paper, we present a multiobjective approach for solving the one-way car relocation *** fix three objectives that include the number of remaining rejected demands, the number of jockeys used for the relocation operations, and the total time used by these jockeys. For this sake, we propose to apply two algorithms namely NSGA-Ⅱ and an adapted memetic algorithm(MA) that we call MARPOCS which stands for memetic algorithm for the one-way carsharing system. The NSGA-Ⅱ is used as a reference to compare the performance of MARPOCS. The comparison of the approximation sets obtained by both algorithms shows that the hybrid algorithm outperforms the classical NSGA-Ⅱ and so solutions generated by the MARPOCS are much better than the solutions generated by NSGA-Ⅱ. This observation is proved by the comparison of different quality indicators’ values that are used to compare the performance of each algorithm. Results show that the MARPOCS is promising to generate very good solutions for the multiobjective car relocation problem in one-way carsharing system. It shows a good performance in exploring the search space and in finding solution with very good fitness values.
