Influence of ectomycorrhizal inoculation on Pinus wallichiana and Cedrus deodara seedlings under nursery conditions

A study was undertaken to examine the extent of root colonization by four locally isolated ectomycorrhizal （ECM） fungi （Hebeloma theobrominum, Boletus dryophilus, Scleroderma citrinum and Suillus luteus） and their effects on seedling growth in Pinus wallichiana and Cedrus deodara under nursery conditions. Seedlings of the two conifers were inoculated with mycelium of ECM fungi and were grown in pots containing sterilized forest soil for six months. The percentage of ECM colonization of roots was 38%-52% in Pinus wallichiana and 33%-48~ in Cedrus deodara. ECM colonization increased shoot height, needle number, shoot and root biomass and survival of inoculated seedlings. Among the four ECM fungi Hebeloma theobrominum was more effective with Pinus wallichiana and Scleroderma citrinum with Cedrus deodara in promoting seedling survival and overall growth. All the four ECM fungi used enhanced growth of inoculated seedlings and thus can be used in afforestation and regeneration programmes in degraded forests ecosystems.

Aims In view of the growing interest in modelling the potential spread of invasive species,prediction of plant invasiveness on the basis of native range size holds considerable *** objective was to use a simple model to evaluate whether a wider native range predisposes plant species to become invasive in non-native regions and to easily identify potential invaders on this *** Kashmir Himalayan alien flora,of which a large proportion is native to Europe,was used to test this *** The Kashmir Himalayan alien flora comprises 436 species of vascular plants at different stages of *** focussed on plant species at two critical invasion stages(sensu Colautti and MacIsaac 2004),*** II(species that are just at the earliest phase of introduction)and Stage V(species that are widespread and dominant in the invaded region and are thus considered invasive).We used the territorial distribution in Europe(number of countries)as a surrogate for the native range size of plants of European *** Findings Using a subset of 88 species,for which information on the native European range was available,we showed that a large proportion(68%)of Stage II species growing in the Kashmir Valley had a relatively restricted European range(present in20 countries).We consequently hypothesized that 14 Kashmir Himalayan Stage II species of European origin that are distributed in>20 European countries are at risk of becoming future invaders in *** the other hand,those Kashmir Himalayan Stage II species of European origin distributed in<20 European countries are less likely to become *** this analysis is quite simple,the data suggest that a wider native range is a good predictor of plant invasiveness and could be used as a simple and low-cost early warning tool in predicting potential invasive species.

Introduction:The ecological processes underlying the suppressive impacts of invasive species on native species diversity,both above-and below-ground,in non-native regions are not well *** therefore aimed to investigate the cross-city biogeographic patterns of arbuscular mycorrhizal(AM)diversity in Conyza canadensis rhizosphere in native(North American)and non-native(Kashmir Himalayan)***:We recovered AMF spores from rhizospheric soils of Conyza in native and non-native ranges,besides doing so from the uninvaded sites in the introduced *** extracted from AMF spores was processed for cloning and PCR-RFLP of SSU rRNA gene to yield the restriction groups(RGs)followed by their sequence analysis to determine the sequence groups(SGs).Results:The results indicated greater diversity of RGs and SGs in Conyza rhizosphere in native than in non-native *** the introduced region,however,the AMF diversity was more in uninvaded than in invaded *** species composition of AMF varied significantly between native and non-native regions and so also between invaded and uninvaded ***:Though difference in AMF diversity between Conyza invaded and uninvaded sites may be attributed to invasion,the role of other evolutionary factors seems likely for differences between the native and non-native *** suggest that the ecological processes underlying these evolutionary differences in two biogeographic regions,besides the intensity of urbanization,might play some role in these differences.

The objective of this study was to compare Magnetic Resonance Urography (MRU) with Intravenous Pyelography (IVP) in evaluation of patients with hydronephrosis on ultrasonography. 49 patients of hydronephrosis on USG were enrolled for the study from Jan. 2011 to Dec. 2012. All patients under went Intravenous Urography (IVU). MRU was done to determine the anatomical details and function of each renal unit. MRU was performed on a 1.5 tesla unit (Magneton Avento;Siemens, Erlangen, Germany). Static T2-weighted Magnetic Resonance Urography (MRU) was performed by using a standard fast spin echo technique. Dynamic study was performed after injecting intravenous diuretic followed by Gadolinium contrast media. Morphological results of MRU were compared with IVU. The anatomical findings were compared with operative findings. Stastical analysis was performed and data expressed as mean ± SD. MRU showed PUJ obstruction in 41 out of 45 patients (91.1%). We concluded that MRU can provide complete diagnostic evaluation of entire urinary tract in a single session and has potential to replace IVP.

Percutaneous Cholecystostomy in High Risk Patients with Acute Cholecystitis

Aims and Objectives: To assess efficacy and safety of percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) in high risk patients with acute cholecystitis. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out in high risk patients with acute calculous or acalculous cholecystitis. Patients qualifying for the study were subjected to PC under ultrasound (USG) guidance. A cholecystogram was done postoperatively, to help establish satisfactory catheter position. Results: 24 (70.59%) patients had empyema-gallbladder, 8 (23.53%) had acute calcular cholecystitis and 2 (5.9%) patients were diagnosed as acalcular cholecystitis. None of the patients was fit for general anesthesia at the time of admission. Median hospital-stay after performing procedure was 4 days. Clinical success rate was reported 100% in our study. Bile cultures yielded growth of E Coli in 10 (29.41%), klebsela in 8 (23.53%), pseudomonas aeruginosa in 6 (17.65%) and Proteus mirabilis in 4 (11.8%) of patients. 6 (17.65%) patients did not grow any organism in their bile. Growth noted was sensitive to imipenem 29.41% (10), ciprofloxacin 17.65% (6), levofloxacin 17.65% % (6) and cefuroxime 11.76% (4). No major complication was recorded in our study. No procedure related death was observed. Tube displacement occurred in one patient and minor bleeding was reported in 2 patients. Catheter was removed after a mean of 25.25 days. All patients underwent definitive surgical intervention during the follow up period of 3 months. Conclusion: USG guided PC is a safe and effective procedure for treating high-risk patients who present with acute cholecystitis. Once the acute symptoms diminish or resolve, it should be followed by elective surgery.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of uterus is the rare of the rarest among the tumors of female genital tract. We herein reported a 32 years old female operated for lower abdominal lump,which was diagnosed,as PNET later confirmed by immunohistochemistry (IHC). She was lost to follow-up and presented 10 months later with recurrence. She was treated with cyclical combination chemotherapy followed by definitive surgery and is in complete remission at present.
