Impact of Chromium Propionate Supplementation and days of Adaptation on Energy Status in Newly Weaned Steer Calves^*

The objective of this research was to evaluate the influences that supplemental dietary chromium propionate (CrP;0 or 0.4 mg·kg-1 added to the total diet on a dM basis) has on plasma indicators of energy status in newly weaned steers upon introduction to the feedlot. For this experiment single source, Angus steers (n = 28;BW = 289 ± 12.0 kg) from a ranch in Western South dakota were weaned and immediately shipped 579 km to the Ruminant Nutrition Center (RNC) in Brookings, Sd. Steers were allotted to one of four 7.6 m × 7.6 m pens (2 pens/diet;7 steers/pen) at 4 d post-arrival to the RNC and test diets were initiated. No anabolic implant was used in this study. Subsequent BW measurements were obtained at 1400 h, to accommodate a post-prandial timing for blood sampling. This was 4 h after initial access to feed, and immediately prior to the afternoon feed delivery. Weights and blood sampling occurred on d 5, 12, 19, and 33. Whole blood samples were collected from all steers via jugular venipuncture and separated as plasma. There were no diet x day interactions (P ≥ 0.51) for plasma glucose, insulin, or urea-N. Plasma glucose, insulin, and urea-n levels were similar between diets (P ≥ 0.35). Plasma glucose and urea-n levels were not different across days (P ≥ 0.59). Insulin levels differed as a result of days of adaptation and were greatest (P = 0.01) on d 12 regardless of diet. There tended (P = 0.12) to be a diet x day interaction for NEFA levels. Plasma NEFA levels tended to be lower (P = 0.13) for calves fed CrP on d 5, and were greater (P = 0.09) on d 12 in calves fed CrP. The shift in NEFA on d 12 coincided with the spike in insulin levels. Both events occurred at the time that NEg intake was approaching the acclimated plateau and neither event impacted glucose status. In non-ruminants, elevated insulin concentrations decrease circulating NEFA levels. We detected minimal differences in regard to plasma indicators of lipid metabolism in this

A Rare Case of Aortic Valve Endocarditis and Acute Meningitis due to Haemophilus influenzae

HACEK organisms represent a rare but important group of causative pathogens in endocarditis. These bacteria have historically been associated with culture-negative endocarditis;however, modern laboratory techniques have made this less common. In this case, we present a 74-year-old man who presented with acute onset altered mentation, fever, and sepsis. He was ultimately found to have Haemophilus influenzae meningitis, cerebral empyema, aortic valve endocarditis, psoas myositis, and L2 - L3 diskitis with osteomyelitis. Although HACEK organisms are commonly found in the oropharynx and upper respiratory tract in humans, our patient did not report recent preceding dental or ENT procedures. H. influenzae is responsible for approximately 0.16% of all cases of bacterial endocarditis, representing a very limited subset. Although generally considered low virulent pathogens, this case demonstrates the unusual extent of infection from a HACEK organism, H. influenzae, causing aortic valve endocarditis as well as atypical non-cardiac sequelae, including acute meningitis.

Impacts of automated passenger cars on the capacity of a freeway basic section: applicability in the determination of vehicle adjustment factors in mixed traffic

The highway capacity manual(HCM)provides a formula to calculate the heavy vehicle adjustment factor(fHV)as a function of passenger car equivalent factors for the heavy vehicle(ET).However,a significant drawback is that the methodology was established solely based on human-driven passenger cars(HdPC)and human-driven heavy vehicles(HdHV).due to automated passenger cars(APCs),a new adjustment factor(fAV)might be *** study simulated traffic flows at different percentages of HdHVs and APCs to investigate the impacts of HdHVs and APCs on freeway capacity by analyzing their influence on fHV and fAV *** simulation determined observed adjustment factors at different percentages of HdHVs and APCs(fobserved).The HCM formula was used to calculate(fHCM).Modifications to the HCM formula are proposed,and vehicle adjustment factors due to HdHVs and APCs were calculated(fproposed).Results showed that,in the presence of APCs,while fobserved and fHCM were statistically significantly different,fobserved and fproposed were statistically ***,this study recommends using the proposed formula when determining vehicle adjustment factors(fproposed)due to HdHVs and APCs in the traffic stream.

BACKGROUNd Mucoepidermoid carcinoma(MEC)is a rare malignancy of the head and neck;however,it accounts for a majority of the tumors of the salivary *** study used a national population-based registry to describe the pre-treatment and treatment-related prognostic factors that influence survival in patients with MEC of the major salivary *** our knowledge,this is the largest populationbased study examining predictors of both overall and cause-specific survival of MEC of the major salivary *** To identify prognostic factors influencing overall survival(OS)and cause-specific survival(CSS)of patients with MEC of the major salivary *** We used the Surveillance,Epidemiology and End-Results database of the National Cancer Institute to investigate a variety of factors that could influence survival of patients diagnosed with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the major salivary glands.A total of 2210 patients diagnosed with MEC of the major salivary glands during the years of 1975-2016 were *** primary endpoints were OS and *** regression analysis was used to perform univariate and multivariate analyses of clinical variables such as age at diagnosis,diagnosis year,sex,race,tumor size,stage,grade,treatment with or without surgical excision,and adjuvant radiotherapy *** A total of 2210 patients diagnosed with MEC of the major salivary glands met inclusion *** this study,95%of patients underwent surgical excision and 41%received adjuvant radiation *** OS time for Grade I,II,and III/IV was 401 mo(±48.25,95%CI),340 mo(±33.68,95%CI)and 55 mo(±11.05,95%CI),*** analysis revealed that lack of surgical excision was associated with decreased OS[hazard ratio(HR)4.26,Pd that patients with localized disease had improved OS compared to both regional and distant disease(HR 3.07 and 6.96,respectively,Pdditionally,univariate analysis demonstrated that male sex,age over 50 at diagnosis,G

Neurosurgical procedures cause inevitable brain damage from the multitude of surgical manipulations ***,retraction,thermal damage from electrocautery,and intraoperative hemorrhage cause immediate and long-term brain injuries that are directly linked to neurosurgical operations,and these types of injuries,collectively,have been termed surgical brain injury(SBI).For the past decade,a model developed to study the underlying brain pathologies resulting from SBI has provided insight on cellular mechanisms and potential therapeutic *** model,as seen in a rat,mouse,and rabbit,mimics a neurosurgical operation and causes commonly encountered post-operative complications such as brain edema,neuroinflammation,and *** this review,we elaborate on SBI and its clinical impact,the SBI animal models and their clinical relevance,the importance of applying therapeutics before neurosurgical procedures(i.e.,preconditioning),and the new direction of applying venom-derived proteins to attenuate SBI.

Combining targeted therapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors in the treatment of metastatic melanoma

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and has an incidence that is rising faster than any other solid tumor. Metastatic melanoma treatment has considerably progressed in the past five years with the introduction of targeted therapy(BRAF and MEK inhibitors) and immune checkpoint blockade(anti-CTLA4, anti-Pd-1, and anti-Pd-L1). However, each treatment modality has limitations. Treatment with targeted therapy has been associated with a high response rate, but with short-term responses. Conversely, treatment with immune checkpoint blockade has a lower response rate, but with longterm responses. Targeted therapy affects antitumor immunity, and synergy may exist when targeted therapy is combined with immunotherapy. This article presents a brief review of the rationale and evidence for the potential synergy between targeted therapy and immune checkpoint blockade. Challenges and directions for future studies are also proposed.
