The purpose of this paper is to present a comparison between the modified nonlinear SchrSdinger （MNLS） equation and the focusing and defocusing variants of the （unmodified） nonlinear SchrSdinger （NLS） equation in the semiclassical limit. We describe aspects of the limiting dynamics and discuss how the nature of the dynamics is evident theoretically through inverse-scattering and noncommutative steepest descent methods. The main message is that, depending on initial data, the MNLS equation can behave either like the defocusing NLS equation, like the focusing NLS equation （in both cases the analogy is asymptotically accurate in the semiclassical limit when the NLS equation is posed with appropriately modified initial data）, or like an interesting mixture of the two. In the latter case, we identify a feature of the dynamics analogous to a sonic line in gas dynamics, a free boundary separating subsonic flow from supersonic flow.

The capacity of zoonotic influenza to cross species boundaries to infect humans poses a global health threat. A previous study identified sites in 10 influenza proteins that characterize the host shifts from avian to human influenza. Here, we used seven feature selection algorithms based on machine learning techniques to generate a novel and extensive selection of diverse sites from the nine internal proteins of influenza based on statistically importance to differentiating avian from human viruses. A set of 131 sites was generated by processing each protein independently, and a selection of 113 sites was found by analyzing a concatenation of sequences from all nine proteins. These new sites were analyzed according to their annual mutational trends. The correlation of each site with all other sites (one-to-many) and the connectivity within groups of specific sites (one-to-one) were identified. We compared the performance of these new sites evaluated by four classifiers against those recorded in previous research, and found our sites to be better suited to host distinction in all but one protein, validating the significance of our site selection. Our findings indicated that, in our selection of sites, human influenza tended to mutate more than avian influenza. despite this, the correlation and connectivity between the avian sites was stronger than that of the human sites, and the percentage of sites with high connectivity was also greater in avian influenza.

INTROdUCTION Project based learning(PBL)fully engages students in the subject area,promotes teamwork,transdisciplinary collaboration,allows student teams to engage and solve community design problems and can ultimately lead to broader student ***,however,presents significant curricular challenges,including project definition and meaningful student *** authors began the process of exploring PBL through a National Science Foundation Transformation Undergraduate Education in Science,Technology,Engineering and Mathematics(TUES)*** program was piloted for two semesters under the TUES award and has now completed its eighth semester overall operating as a special curricular track in parallel with an existing,traditional curricular program in Building *** four years of dedicated PBL program experience to inform their efforts,the authors are currently reworking the existing Building Science program curriculum to fully integrate a PBL capstone during the senior year while establishing a clear curricular path,creating a sound base of projects,and maintaining resource limits that include,but are not limited to,facilities,materials and *** this paper,the authors discuss their successes and difficulties with imple-menting PBL in an undergraduate design and construction program by reviewing twelve years of both spontaneous and planned project based PBL experiences in an undergraduate design and construction program.

A dominant gene, Pml2, conferring the resistance to powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis) has been transferred to wheat from Aegilops speltoides. Sixteen RFLP probes were used to test Line 31 and its parents, showing that Line 31 is a 6B/6S translocation lines. The linkage analysis by five probes indicates that Pm12 is located on the chromosome 6B/6S, and tightly flanked by an RFLP marker α-Amy-1 (1.1 cM), identified by RFLP and isozyme analysis. This approach is equally applicable to the identification of other transferred alien genes and the segments of alien chromosome introgressed into wheat.

The Florida Museum of Natural History＇s McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity, on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida, has become one of the world＇s largest institutions for research on butterflies and moths, and an important research facility for insect science. The facility was constructed by combining the staff and merging the Lepidoptera holdings from the Allyn Museum of Entomology, the Florida State Collection of Arthropods and other University of Florida collections, and now includes over ten million specimens from all over the world, rivaling some of the largest Lepidoptera research collections globally. The facility includes a team of domestic and international researchers studying many areas of lepidopterology, including behavior, biodiversity, biogeography, ecology, genomics, physiology, systematics and taxonomy. In this paper, we introduce the McGuire Center, its staff, and the many research activities for researchers across entomological disciplines.
