Effectiveness and Safety of Chinese Medicine for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Chinese medicine(CM) for Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis(IPF) patients. Methods: To screened relevant articles, Pub Med, Cochrane Library, Excerpta Medica Datase(EMBASE), China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI), Chinese VIP Information(VIP), Wanfang Database and Chinese Biomedical Database(CBM) were searched in English or Chinese until December 2015 for randomized controlled trials, which compared CM treatment(CM group) with Western medicine or placebo(control group) on IPF. The outcome measures included acute exacerbation, pulmonary function, the St George’s respiratory questionnaire(SGRQ) scores, 6-minute walk test(6 MWT) distance, adverse events and mortality. Results: This meta-analysis included 25 randomized controlled trials involving 1,471 patients. Compared with the control group, CM group was superiori in reducing the risk of exacerbation [relative risk(RR)=0.40, 95% CI 0.22 to 0.72, P0.05). This meta-analysis also revealed that CM therapy significantly decreased the SGRQ score(SMD=–0.60, 95% CI –1.14 to –0.05, P0.05) between CM and control groups. Conclusions: The pooled outcomes suggest that CM treatment appears benefit in reducing the risk of exacerbation, improving lung function and decreasing the incidence of adverse effects and enhancing the quality of life. In binary compound 2D insulators/semiconductors such as hexagonal boron nitride(h BN), the different electron affinities of atoms can give rise to out-of-plane electric polarizations across inversion asymmetric van der Waals interface of near 0° interlayer twisting. Here we show that at a general stacking order where sliding breaks 2π/3-rotational symmetry, the interfacial charge redistribution also leads to an in-plane electric polarization, with a magnitude comparable to that of the out-of-plane ones.The effect is demonstrated in h BN bilayers, as well as in biased graphene bilayers with gate-controlled interlayer charge redistributions. In long wavelength moiré patterns, the in-plane electric polarizations determined by the local interlayer stacking registries constitute topologically nontrivial spatial textures. We show that these textures can be used to distinguish moirépatterns of different origins from twisting, biaxial-and uniaxial-heterostrain, where vector fields of electric polarizations feature Bloch-type merons, Néel-type merons, and anti-merons, respectively. Combinations of twisting and heterostrain can further be exploited for engineering various electric polarization textures including 1D quasiperiodic lattices.

This study analyzed the function of different glutathione S-transferase(GST)isoforms and detoxification metabolism responses in Manila clam,Ruditapes philippinarum,exposed to 4 kinds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)single,and their mixtures for 15 days under laboratory conditions.13 kinds of GSTs in R.philippinarum were classified,and the results of tissue distribution indicated that 12 kinds of GSTs(except GST sigma 3)expressed most in digestive glands.We detected the m RNA expression levels of aryl hydrocarbon receptor signaling pathway,and detoxification system in digestive glands of clams exposed to benzo[a]pyrene(Ba P),chrysene(CHR),benzo[a]anthracene(Ba A),benzo[b]fluoranthene(Bb F),and Ba P+CHR+Ba A+Bb F,respectively.Among these genes,we selected GST-sigma,GST-omega and GST-pi as potential indicators to Ba P;GST-sigma,GST-A and GST-rho to CHR;GST-pi,GST-sigma,GST-A,GST-rho and GST-microsomal to Ba A;GST-theta and GST-mu to Bb F;while GST-pi and GST-mu to the mixture of Ba P,CHR,Ba A and Bb F.Additionally,the bioaccumulation of PAHs in tissues increased remarkably over time,and showed an obvious doseeffect.Under the same concentration,the bioaccumulation in single exposure group was higher than that in mixture group,and the bioaccumulation of PAHs in tissues with different concentrations of stress was irregular.The results revealed the metabolic differences and bioaccumulation rules in clams exposed to four kinds of PAHs,and provided more valuable information for the PAHs risk assessment.

Understanding laser induced ultrafast processes with complex three-dimensional(3D)geometries and extreme property evolution offers a unique opportunity to explore novel physical phenomena and to overcome the manufacturing limitations.Ultrafast imaging offers exceptional spatiotemporal resolution and thus has been considered an effective tool.However,in conventional single-view imaging techniques,3D information is projected on a two-dimensional plane,which leads to significant information loss that is detrimental to understanding the full ultrafast process.Here,we propose a quasi-3D imaging method to describe the ultrafast process and further analyze spatial asymmetries of laser induced plasma.Orthogonally polarized laser pulses are adopted to illuminate reflection-transmission views,and binarization techniques are employed to extract contours,forming the corresponding two-dimensional matrix.By rotating and multiplying the two-dimensional contour matrices obtained from the dual views,a quasi-3D image can be reconstructed.This successfully reveals dual-phase transition mechanisms and elucidates the diffraction phenomena occurring outside the plasma.Furthermore,the quasi-3D image confirms the spatial asymmetries of the picosecond plasma,which is difficult to achieve with two-dimensional images.Our findings demonstrate that quasi-3D imaging not only offers a more comprehensive understanding of plasma dynamics than previous imaging methods,but also has wide potential in revealing various complex ultrafast phenomena in related fields including strong-field physics,fluid dynamics,and cutting-edge manufacturing.

Estimation of Shallow Landslide Susceptibility Incorporating the Impacts of Vegetation on Slope Stability

This study aimed to develop a physical-based approach for predicting the spatial likelihood of shallow landslides at the regional scale in a transition zone with extreme topography.Shallow landslide susceptibility study in an area with diverse vegetation types as well as distinctive geographic factors(such as steep terrain,fractured rocks,and joints)that dominate the occurrence of shallow landslides is challenging.This article presents a novel methodology for comprehensively assessing shallow landslide susceptibility,taking into account both the positive and negative impacts of plants.This includes considering the positive efects of vegetation canopy interception and plant root reinforcement,as well as the negative efects of plant gravity loading and preferential fow of root systems.This approach was applied to simulate the regional-scale shallow landslide susceptibility in the Dadu River Basin,a transition zone with rapidly changing terrain,uplifting from the Sichuan Plain to the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau.The research fndings suggest that:(1)The proposed methodology is efective and capable of assessing shallow landslide susceptibility in the study area;(2)the proposed model performs better than the traditional pseudo-static analysis method(TPSA)model,with 9.93%higher accuracy and 5.59%higher area under the curve;and(3)when the ratio of vegetation weight loads to unstable soil mass weight is high,an increase in vegetation biomass tends to be advantageous for slope stability.The study also mapped the spatial distribution of shallow landslide susceptibility in the study area,which can be used in disaster prevention,mitigation,and risk management.

Renewable energy production has been surging around the world in recent years.To mitigate the increasing uncertainty and intermittency of the renewable generation,proactive demand response algorithms and programs are proposed and developed to further improve the utilization of load flexibility and increase the efficiency of power system operation.One of the biggest challenges to efficient control and operation of demand response resources is how to forecast the baseline electricity consumption and estimate the load impact from demand response resources accurately.In this paper,we propose a mixed effect segmented regression model and a new robust estimate for forecasting the baseline electricity consumption in Southern California,USA,by combining the ideas of random effect regression model,segmented regression model,and the least trimmed squares estimate.Since the log-likelihood of the considered model is not differentiable at breakpoints,we propose a new backfitting algorithm to estimate the unknown parameters.The estimation performance of the new estimation procedure has been demonstrated with both simulation studies and the real data application for the electric load baseline forecasting in Southern California.

Preparation of baicalin colon-targeted granules and its intervention effect on ulcerative colitis in rats

Baicalin(BA)is a flavonoid extracted from the dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi with excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory biological activities.In this study,Eudragit S100 was used as the colonic target material to prepare BA colonic targeting granules(EBCGs)based on plasticizer dry powder coating technology to improve the targeting transportation performance of BA.In vitro studies showed that EBCGs with pH-sensitive properties were successfully prepared by plasticizer dry powder coating,and in vivo animal imaging studies showed that EBCGs could deliver BA to the colon and inhibit the release of BA in the upper gastrointestinal tract(GIT).In vivo studies showed that EBCGs had good therapeutic effects in colitis,which reduced expression levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-α)and interleukin-1β(IL-1β)and increased superoxide dismutase(SOD)activities in the colonic tissues of rats with colitis.In conclusion,Eudragit S100 could be used for the preparation of multi-unit oral colon-targeted formulations by plasticizer dry powder coating technology,and our prepared EBCGs had good colon-targeting properties,which could improve the therapeutic effect and provide a potential application for ulcerative colitis(UC).

With the aim to obtain enhanced absorbing performance at small thickness and low filling,a robust strat-egy to fabricate zinc oxide(ZnO)modified carbon fiber(CF)structures have been successfully prepared by using low temperature hydrothermal method.Due to the multi-interface polarization caused by the high specific surface area of the complex heterostructures and the improvement of impedance matching,the composites show excellent electromagnetic wave absorption properties.Under the condition of low filling content(20 wt%)and ultra-thin thickness(1.5 mm),the excellent absorption performance of minimal reflection loss of−34.4 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth(RL≤−10 dB)of 4.94 GHz is achieved.In addition,the effective absorption bandwidth covers the whole 2-18 GHz band with the increase of thickness from 0.5 to 10 mm.This work provides an innovative method for designing the matching layer of carbon-based absorbing materials,and ZnO@CF heterostructure is expected to become a potential absorbing material.
