Hypoparathyroidism with Fahr’s syndrome: A case report and review of the literature

BACKGROUND Hypoparathyroidism with basal ganglia calcification is clinically rare.Here,we report a case of Fahr’s syndrome due to hypoparathyroidism and review the literature in terms of etiology,clinical manifestation,diagnosis,and treatment.CASE SUMMARY A 62-year-old man experienced repeated twitching of both hands in recent 10 years.On July 28,2017,the patient was admitted to our hospital due to slow response and speech difficulties.On medical examinations,he had a positive Chvostek sign,while no Albright’s hereditary osteodystrophy signs or history of neck surgery or radiation,and his family members had no similar medical history.Laboratory examinations revealed hypocalcemia,hyperphosphatemia,and low parathyroid hormone(PTH)levels.Computed tomography revealed basal ganglia calcification.Based on these investigations,a diagnosis of Fahr’s syndrome due to hypoparathyroidism was suggested.After receiving intravenous calcium gluconate to relieve symptoms,the patient continued to take oral calcium carbonate and calcitriol for treatment.CONCLUSION The possibility of hypoparathyroidism should be considered in patients with chronic hypocalcemia,recurrent tetany,and even neuropsychiatric symptoms.Hypoparathyroidism is a common cause of basal ganglia calcification.Therefore,it is recommended that blood calcium,phosphorus,and PTH levels should be measured in all individuals with basal ganglia calcification to exclude hypoparathyroidism.

Bunch-length measurement at a bunch-by-bunch rate based on time–frequency-domain joint analysis techniques and its application

This paper presents a new technique for measuring the bunch length of a high-energy electron beam at a bunch-by-bunch rate in storage rings.This technique uses the time–frequency-domain joint analysis of the bunch signal to obtain bunch-by-bunch and turn-by-turn longitudinal parameters,such as bunch length and synchronous phase.The bunch signal is obtained using a button electrode with a bandwidth of several gigahertz.The data acquisition device was a high-speed digital oscilloscope with a sampling rate of more than 10 GS/s,and the single-shot sampling data buffer covered thousands of turns.The bunch-length and synchronous phase information were extracted via offline calculations using Python scripts.The calibration coefficient of the system was determined using a commercial streak camera.Moreover,this technique was tested on two different storage rings and successfully captured various longitudinal transient processes during the harmonic cavity debugging process at the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility(SSRF),and longitudinal instabilities were observed during the single-bunch accumulation process at Hefei Light Source(HLS).For Gaussian-distribution bunches,the uncertainty of the bunch phase obtained using this technique was better than 0.2 ps,and the bunch-length uncertainty was better than 1 ps.The dynamic range exceeded 10 ms.This technology is a powerful and versatile beam diagnostic tool that can be conveniently deployed in high-energy electron storage rings.

Recent Progress in Shape Memory Polymers for Biomedical Applications

Shape memory polymers （SMPs） as one type of the most important smart materials have attracted increasing attention due to their promising application in the field of biomedicine, textiles, aerospace et al. Following a brief intoduction of the conception and classification of SMPs, this review is focused on the progress of shape memory polymers for biomedical applications. The progress includes the early researches based on thermo-induced SMPs, the improvement of the stimulus, the development of shape recovery ways and the expansion of the applications in biomedical field. In addition, future perspectives of SMPs in the field of biomedicine are also discussed.

Objective: The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) pandemic has had a serious impact on health all over the world. Cancer patient, whose immunity is often compromised, faces a huge challenge.Currently, some COVID-19 vaccines are being developed and applied on general population;however,whether cancer patients should take COVID-19 vaccine remains unknown. Our study aimed to explore the knowledge, attitude, acceptance, and predictors of intention to receive the COVID-19 vaccine among cancer patients in Eastern China.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Eastern China from June 17 th to September 3 rd, 2021.Patients were selected using a convenience sampling method. A self-report questionnaire was developed to assess knowledge about the COVID-19 vaccine, attitude towards the vaccine and acceptance of the vaccine;following a review of similar studies previously published in the scientific literature, multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine the predictors associated with COVID-19 vaccine acceptance.Results: A total of 2158 cancer patients were enrolled in this study. The rate of vaccine hesitancy was 24.05%(519/2158);further, among the participants of vaccine acceptance, 767 had taken COVID-19 vaccine(35.54%), and 872 were willing to get vaccinated(40.01%). A total of 24 variables including demographic characteristics, clinical status of cancer, impact of COVID-19 pandemic on study participants,patients’ knowledge about the COVID-19 vaccine, and attitude towards the vaccine, had significant differences between the ‘‘vaccine hesitancy" population and ‘‘vaccine acceptance" population.Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that parameters including alcohol consumption(odds ratio [OR] = 1.849;95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.375–2.488;P-reference [P-Ref] < 0.001 vs nondrinkers), income impacted by COVID-19 pandemic(OR = 1.930, 2.037 and 2.688 for mild, moderate,and severe impact, respectively;all P-Ref < 0.01 vs no impact), knowledge of how the vaccine was developed(OR = 1.61

A bi-As-capped and tetra-V-substituted arsenomolybdate(Hbib)_(2)(biyb)_(3)[As^(Ⅲ)_(2)As^(Ⅴ)Mo^(Ⅵ)8V^(Ⅴ)_(4)O_(40)]_(2)·H_(2)O(1)(bib=1.4-Bis(imidazoly)butane;biyb=1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene)has been constructed through hydrothermal methods and characterized by conventional method.Compound 1 is a tetra-V substituted{AsMo^(Ⅵ)_(8)V^(Ⅴ)_(4)O_(4)}polyanions capped by two AsⅢcations at two symmetrical ditch in{AsO_(4)}rectangular pyramid geometry.It exhibits higher specific capacitance,capacitance retention,and electrocatalytic activities for oxidizing ascorbic acid and reducing peroxide hydrogen.

Real-time Microwave Exposure Induces Calcium Efflux in Primary Hippocampal Neurons and Primary Cardiomyocytes

Objective To detect the effects of microwave on calcium levels in primary hippocampal neurons and primary cardiomyocytes by the real-time microwave exposure combined with laser scanning confocal microscopy. Methods The primary hippocampal neurons and primary cardiomyocytes were cultured and labeled with probes, including Fluo-4 AM, Mag-Fluo-AM, and Rhod-2, to reflect the levels of whole calcium [Ca], endoplasmic reticulum calcium [Ca]ER, and mitochondrial calcium [Ca]MIT, respectively. Then, the cells were exposed to a pulsed microwave of 2.856 GHz with specific absorption rate(SAR) values of 0, 4, and 40 W/kg for 6 min to observe the changes in calcium levels. Results The results showed that the 4 and 40 W/kg microwave radiation caused a significant decrease in the levels of [Ca], [Ca]ER, and [Ca]MIT in primary hippocampal neurons. In the primary cardiomyocytes, only the 40 W/kg microwave radiation caused the decrease in the levels of [Ca], [Ca]ER, and [Ca]MIT. Primary hippocampal neurons were more sensitive to microwave exposure than primary cardiomyocytes. The mitochondria were more sensitive to microwave exposure than the endoplasmic reticulum. Conclusion The calcium efflux was occurred during microwave exposure in primary hippocampal neurons and primary cardiomyocytes. Additionally, neurons and mitochondria were sensitive cells and organelle respectively.

Critical respiratory failure due to pregnancy complicated by COVID-19 and bacterial coinfection:A case report

BACKGROUND In the past 3 years,the global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)has posed a great threat to human life and safety.Among the causes of death in COVID-19 patients,combined or secondary bacterial infection is an important factor.As a special group,pregnant women experience varying degrees of change in their immune status,cardiopulmonary function,and anatomical structure during pregnancy,which puts them at higher risk of contracting COVID-19.COVID-19 infection during pregnancy is associated with increased adverse events such as hospitalisation,admission to the intensive care unit,and mechanical ventilation.Therefore,pregnancy combined with coinfection of COVID-19 and bacteria often leads to critical respiratory failure,posing severe challenges in the diagnosis and treatment process.CASE SUMMARY We report a case of COVID-19 complicated with Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus)coinfection in a pre-gnant woman at 34 wk of gestation.Her rapid progression of pulmonary lesions caused severe respiratory failure,and she received noninvasive ventilator-assisted respiratory treatment.Subsequently,we delivered a foetus via emergency caesarean section after accelerating the maturity of the foetal pulmonary system,and the respiratory condition of the puerperant woman significantly improved after the delivery of the foetus.Lavage fluid was taken under tracheoscopy to quickly search for pathogens by the metagenomic nextgeneration sequencing(mNGS),and both COVID-19 and S.aureus were detected.After targeted anti-infective treatment,the maternal condition gradually improved,and the patient was discharged from the hospital.CONCLUSION The coinfection of pregnancy with COVID-19 and bacteria often leads to critical respiratory failure,which is a great challenge in the process of diagnosis and treatment.It is crucial to choose the right time to deliver the foetus and to quickly find pathogens by mNGS.

A Secure IoT Firmware Update Scheme Against SCPA and DoS Attacks

In the IEEE S&P 2017,Ronen et al.exploited side-channel power analysis(SCPA)and approximately 5000 power traces to recover the global AES-CCM key that Philip Hue lamps use to decrypt and authenticate new firmware.Based on the recovered key,the attacker could create a malicious firmware update and load it to Philip Hue lamps to cause Internet of Things(IoT)security issues.Inspired by the work of Ronen et al.,we propose an AES-CCM-based firmware update scheme against SCPA and denial of service(DoS)attacks.The proposed scheme applied in IoT terminal devices includes two aspects of design(i.e.,bootloader and application layer).Firstly,in the bootloader,the number of updates per unit time is limited to prevent the attacker from acquiring a sufficient number of useful traces in a short time,which can effectively counter an SCPA attack.Secondly,in the application layer,using the proposed handshake protocol,the IoT device can access the IoT server to regain update permission,which can defend against DoS attacks.Moreover,on the STM32F405+M25P40 hardware platform,we implement Philips'and the proposed modified schemes.Experimental results show that compared with the firmware update scheme of Philips Hue smart lamps,the proposed scheme additionally requires only 2.35 KB of Flash memory and a maximum of 0.32 s update time to effectively enhance the security of the AES-CCM-based firmware update process.

Effect of relative humidity at either acute or chronic moderate temperature on growth performance and droppings' corticosterone metabolites of broilers

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of relative humidity(RH) at either acute or chronic moderate ambient temperature(Ta) on growth performance and droppings' corticosterone metabolites of broilers.Two experiments were conducted: effect of RH(35,60 or 85%) on average daily feed intake(ADFI) and droppings' corticosterone metabolites at acute(1 d: 20–26 or 31–20°C,26 or 31°C for 6 h d–1 at 10:00–16:00) moderate Ta(experiment 1) and effect of RH(35,60 or 85%) on growth performance and droppings' corticosterone metabolites at chronic(step-wisely increasing temperature by 3°C every 3 d from 20 to 32°C within 15 d: 20–23–26–29–32°C) moderate Ta(experiment 2).Droppings were collected at the 2,4,6,8,and 22 h after Ta-RH controlled in experiment 1 and at the 2,4,6,and 22 h after Ta controlled to 32°C in experiment 2.The results showed that: 1) In experiment 1,85% RH increased(P0.05) was found in ADFI among the three RH groups at acute moderate 26°C; 35 and 85% RH increased(P0.05) in droppings' corticosterone metabolites was found between the 35 and 60% RH,however,35% RH decreased(P<0.01) ADG compared to the 60% RH,and the average of droppings' corticosterone metabolites in the whole period al

Hydrothermal calcification surface modification of biomedical tantalum

Tantalum(Ta) as a new type of medical metal is now utilized in several orthopedic applications due to its excellent fracture toughness and workability,high corrosion resistance,good biocompatibility and X-ray visibility,but it lacks bioactivity.Therefore,pure Ta was hydrothermally calcified in CaHPO4 solution at 120-200℃ here for bioactive surface modification.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM),energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Raman spectroscopy analyses show that thin tantalum oxide film with a few calcium phosphate precipitates is formed at the surface after the treatment at 200℃.The hydrothermally treated sample has good hydrophilicity and corrosion resistance evidenced by the water contact angle measurement and the potentiodynamic polarization test,respectively,and it can induce the formation of apatite layer after soaked in the simulated body fluid for 1 week.The present method would be applicable for bioactive surface modification of tantalum implants with irregular shapes and even porous structure.
