A polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film that has good electro-optical properties is produced by the method of polymerized-induced phase separation. Based on the application foreground, its capability parameters, such as contrast ratio, work voltage, and visual angle, are characterized for the first time by a white light but not a fixed wavelength light. The results show the PDLC film has a low work-voltage of 20 V, more than 150° visual angle, high stability, and long lifetime. The differences between plastic and glass ITO-coated substrates of PDLC films are also studied in this paper. The plastic substrate has better property and will have a wider perspective especially in the portable, tender and folded display devices. Due to adjustable properties of film by electric field, PDLC has the potential application for display device, sensor, switch, grating, and new generation analytical apparatus.

One factor that shapes the establishment of early neonatal intestinal microbiota is environmental microbial exposure,and probiotic application has been shown to promote health and growth of ***,this study hypothesized that environmental probiotic application in early days of life would be beneficial to newborn *** study aimed to investigate the effect of spraying a compound probiotic fermented liquid(CPFL)into the living environment of piglets on their early growth performance and *** work included 68 piglets,which were randomized into probiotic and control *** and fecal samples were collected at 0,3,7,14,and 21 days of *** CPFL significantly reshaped the microbiota composition of the delivery room environment,increased piglets’daily weight gain and weaning weight(P<0.001),and modulated piglets’serum cytokine levels(increases in Ig A,Ig G,and IL-10;decrease in IFN-γ;P<0.05 in each case)in ***,spraying CPFL during early days of life modified piglets’gut microbiota structure and diversity,increased the abundance of some potentially beneficial bacteria(such as Bacteroides uniformis,Butyricimonas virosa,Parabacteroides distasonis,and Phascolarctobacterium succinatutens)and decreased the abundance of Escherichia coli(P<0.05).Interestingly,CPFL application also significantly enhanced the gut microbial bioactive potential and levels of several serum metabolites involved in the metabolism of vitamins(B2,B3,B6,and E),medium/long-chain fatty acids(caproic,tetradecanoic,and peptadecanoic acids),and dicarboxylic acids(azelaic and sebacic acids).Our study demonstrated that spraying CPFL significantly could improve piglets’growth performance and immunity,and the beneficial effects are associated with changes in the gut microbiota and host *** study has provided novel data for future development of probiotic-based health-promoting strategies and expanded our knowledge of probiotic application in animal husba

Many polyurethanes(PUs)are blood-contacting materials due to their good mechanical properties,fatigue resistance,cytocompatibility,biosafety,and relatively good *** functionalization of the PUs using chemical synthetic methods is especially attractive for expanding their ***,a series of catechol functionalized PU(CPU-PTMEG)elastomers containing variable molecular weight of polytetramethylene ether glycol(PTMEG)soft segment are reported by stepwise polymerization and further introduction of *** the molecular weight of PTMEG fragment enables a regulable catechol content,mobility of the chain segment,hydrogen bond and microphase separation of the C-PUPTMEG elastomers,thus offering tunability of mechanical strength(such as breaking strength from 1.3 MPa to 5.7 MPa),adhesion,self-healing eficiency(from 14.9%to 96.7%within 2 hours),anticoagulant,antioxidation,anti-inflammatory properties and cellular growth *** cardiovascular stent coatings,the C-PU-PTMEGs demonstrate enough flexibility to withstand deformation during the balloon dilation *** special importance is that the C-PU-PTMEG-coated surfaces show the ability to rapidly scavenge free radicals to maintain normal growth of endothelial cells,inhibit smooth muscle cell proliferation,mediate inflammatory response,and reduce thrombus *** the universality of surface adhesion and tunable multifunctionality,these novel C-PU-PTMEG elastomers should find potential usage in artificial heart valves and surface engineering of stents.

We present observations of martensite variants and ferromagnetic domain structures of Ni_(53)Mn_(24)Ga_(23) ferromagnetic shape memory alloys with a pure tetragonal martensitic phase by using scanning electron aconstic microscopy (SEAM) and scanning thermal microscopy (SThM).Electron acoustic images show a polycrystalline morphology with martensite *** coincidence between crystallographic martensitic twin variants and magnetic domains is found.A domain-like structure,obtained by SThM,is firstly reported,and then confirmed by magnetic force microscopy (MFM).The experimental results will be helpful for investigating the local thermal properties of ferromagnets and understanding the relationship between martensite variants and magnetic domains.

BACKGROUND The waist-to-height ratio(WHtR)is a promising anthropometric measure used to evaluate cardiovascular risk in diabetes and metabolic syndrome *** metformin and acarbose in Chinese as the initial hypoglycaemic treatment trial demonstrated that acarbose and metformin reduced the WHtR after 24 wk of *** To investigate the factors associated with a decrease in the WHtR in newly diagnosed Chinese type 2 diabetes patients receiving acarbose or metformin *** At 24 wk,343 patients in the acarbose treatment and 333 patients in the metformin treatment were included in this *** the basis of the reduction in the WHtR,these participants were divided into the following two groups:LowΔWHtR group and highΔWHtR *** and related parameters associated with a highΔWHtR were investigated using univariate and multivariate logistic regression *** A significant decrease in the WHtR was observed in both treatment groups(acarbose:-0.015,95%confidence interval[CI]:-0.018 to-0.012,P<0.001;metformin:-0.013,95%CI:-0.016 to-0.010,P<0.001).In both the acarbose and metformin groups,the WHtR of the women was more likely to be reduced than that of the *** the acarbose group,a lower baseline area under the curve of glucagon-like peptide 1(AUCGLP-1)was associated with a highΔWHtR(odds ratio[OR]=0.796,P<0.001),while a higher baseline AUCGLP-1 was associated with a highΔWHtR in the patients treated with metformin(OR=1.133,P=0.025).Regarding the changes from baseline,an increase in AUCGLP-1 was associated with a highΔWHtR in the acarbose(OR=1.121,P=0.016)but not metformin group.A higher reduction in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol/non-highdensity lipoprotein cholesterol was also associated with a highΔWHtR in the acarbose arm(OR=20.735,P=0.001).In the metformin arm,a higher reduction in fasting plasma glucose(OR=0.843,P=0.039)and total cholesterol was associated with a highΔWHtR(OR=0.743,P=0.013).CONCLUSION A lower glucag

AIM: To quantitatively investigate the retinal vascular diameter changes, analyzing the early and long-term effects on the retinal circulation, with 6-month follow-up. METHODS: Patients underwent horizontal strabismus surger y were enrolled prospectively. Retinal vessel diameters on color fundus photographs were assessed before and 1, 7 d, 6 mo after surgery, using a computerassisted quantitative assessment software. To evaluate the retinal vascular caliber changes, retinal vascular diameters were calculated by means of the Parr–Hubbard formula as the central retinal arteriolar equivalent(CRAE) and central retinal venular equivalent(CRVE). The arteriovenous ratio(AVR) was calculated as CRAE divided by CRVE. RESULTS: A total of 154 eyes of 104 consecutive patients were included. Compared with the data before surgery(121.55±24.67), the mean CRAE(131.18±28.29) significantly increased 1 d af ter surger y(P=0.003), but went back to baseline level at 7 d(118.89±30.35, P=0.15), and 6 mo(123.22±15.32, P=0.60), so did the AVR(P<0.001, P=0.08, P=0.07). As for the mean CRVE, there was no significant difference between those four time points(172.43±33.25, 175.57±36.98, 174.03±40.18, 174.86±20.46, P=1.00). CONCLUSION: Strabismus surgery on both lateral and media rectus muscles, or single media rectus muscle may increase retinal blood flow during the early postoperative period, but would return to normal later. The number of transected anterior ciliary arteries rather might be the main cause of retinal hemodynamic changes early after strabismus surgery.
