We applied the dynamic photoelastic technique to visualize the ultrasound generated in a glass sample by an Nd:YAG pulsed *** a laser pulse was incident on the surface of the glass sample covered,by thin layer of black ink,narrow pulses of JongitudinaJ,shear,and surface acoustic waves were seen in the *** photoelastic picture also showed that the directivity patterns of ultrasound generated in the present case qualitatively agree with the theoretical prediction for the case of a normal surface-acting force.

Acoustic Conditioning System Development and Conditioning Experiments on Black Seabreams in the Xiangshan Bay Sea Ranch

Attracting released hatchery-reared fish to designated areas during the growth process is vital to realize the objectives of sea ranching. Based on the bottom artificial reefs and surface kelp culture facilities in the Xiangshan Bay sea ranch, we proposed systematic techniques related to acoustic conditioning of the black seabream(Sparus macrocephalus). Experiments conducted in 12 m × 10 m × 1.6 m ponds on Xixuan Island showed that black seabream was positively sensitive to 500–600 Hz periodic signals. Conditioned responses were apparent after 8 d. Two to three days were required for recovery of the memory of a conditioned response after a 20-day interval. According to the practical application requirements in the open sea, unattended acoustic conditioning equipment was developed. The ranching equipment was used in 12 m × 12 m × 2.5 m cages, and the behavior of black seabream juveniles was successfully guided after 7 days. Of the 16000 released fish, 82.5% of them were conditioned with a flexible grading net. To avoid inducing a stress response, the juveniles were released into the sea ranch in situ from the net cage. The acoustic conditioning equipments were moved into the open sea and the aggregation phenomenon of the released fish was observed when the sound was played. After 6 months of investigation and based on Sr+ marking, only one acoustically conditioned fish was found outside the 3.5-km^2 sea ranch area, thereby reached the goal of guiding activity. The practical effect in the Xiangshan Bay sea ranch showed the validity of the acoustic conditioning system, which may contribute to improve the operation of the sea ranches in the East China Sea.

Many studies have shown that the magnetic resonance signal decay with an extend range of diffusion weighting(b-factor)is a bi-exponential attenuation in the diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging experiments in *** on this feature and the two-compartmental model,we propose a twice-linear-fitting(TLF)algorithm to estimate the apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC)of the water molecules instead of the commonly used iterative Levenberg–Marquardt(LM)*** TLF algorithm consists of two liner fitting steps to estimate the fast and the slow apparent diffusion coefficients and their sizes,*** is unnecessary to guess the initial values in the whole fitting *** time consumption of the TLF algorithm is much less than that of the iterative LM ***,the TLF algorithm may avoid the extraneous solutions,which often deteriorates the results of the LM *** with the iterative fitting method,the TLF algorithm is a reliable and timeefficient approach to estimate the ADC of water molecules in vivo in magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging experiments.

A Comparative Study of Fish Assemblages Near Aquaculture, Artificial and Natural Habitats

Habitat plays a critical role in regulating fish community structure. Using the data collected from a monthly trammel net survey in Ma'an archipelago off the east coast of China, we evaluated impacts of five different habitats(artificial reefs, mussel farms, cage aquaculture, rocky reefs and soft bottom) on fish assemblages. This study suggests that artificial reefs(AR) have significantly higher species richness, abundance and diversity than mussel farms(MF) or soft bottom(SB) habitats during most seasons, and that fish taxa in the AR habitats are similar to those in the rocky reef(RR) habitats. Two different fish assemblage patterns were revealed in the study area using non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination: an assemblage dominated by reef fishes(especially by Scorpaenidae species) in AR, RR and cage aquaculture(CA) habitats and an assemblage dominated by Sciaenidae species in MF and SB habitats. We suggest that reef fishes play a key role in differentiating fish community structures in the study area. Although few differences in fish abundance and diversity were found between the CA and SB habitats, a more diverse age structure was observed in the CA habitats. A much more complex fish assemblage and enhanced population of local species were established as a result of the presence of both floating and fixed artificial structures, probably through improved survival rates.

BACKGROUND： Tacrolimus （FK506） protects peripheral nerves located in damaged regions by inhibiting T lymphocyte proliferation and activation. OBJECTIVE： To evaluate the effect of FK506 on promoting regeneration of rat sciatic nerve. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A randomized, controlled, animal study was performed at the Laboratory of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Dalian Medical University, China, from September 2007 to September 2008. MATERIALS： A total of 60 adult, male, Sprague-Dawley rats were equally and randomly divided into model, local administration and systemic administration groups. All rats received a neurotomy of bilateral sciatic nerves to establish models of nerve regeneration chambers. The powder and injection of FK506 were supplied by Fujisawa Pharmaceutical, Japan. METHODS： The regeneration chambers of the model group were infused with 0.2 mL saline. The systemic group were injected with 0.2 mL saline, followed by daily subcutaneous injections of FK506 （1 mg/kg）, for 14 days. The local administration group was infused with 0.2 mL FK506 （1 μg/mL）. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Local immune response was observed using hematoxylin-eosin staining. Myelinated nerve fiber number, myelin sheath and nerve fiber thickness were observed using toluidine blue staining. Wet weight of gastrocnemius was evaluated. Compound muscle action potential amplitude, latency, and conduction time were recorded, and motor nerve conduction velocity was calculated using electrophysiology. RESULTS： The total number of myelinated nerve fibers in the local and systemic administration groups was significantly higher than in the model group. The density of myelinated nerve fibers, myelin sheath thickness and mean axon diameter were significantly increased in the systemic administration group compared with the model group （P 〈 0.05）. The sea area surrounding Baishishan Island has abundant fishery resources because of its plentiful food and rocky reefs that provide refuge from ***,overfishing has occurred in many areas and some species’local populations need to be replenished through stocking *** case study,using Sparus microcephalus as the test species,designed and analyzed detailed stocking strategies to improve the survival ratio and control the active range of the released *** variables included release location,release time,and tidal *** stocking strategies were designed,executed,and evaluated for comparison.A traditional stocking method was applied to the high flow area of Baishishan Island in Xiangshan Bay,East China *** released fry were transported by boat and released to the sea using *** fish were traced using plastic *** average distance of the 19 recaptured fry from the release point was 7.6 km with 52.9%mortality *** distance at recapture and mortality rate among recaptured individuals showed that the traditional releasing method was not *** in situ stocking method was used in a low tide area and natural process was imitated to decrease the stress response and promote physiological *** purpose of this method was to prolong the release process applying temporary net cages at the release location,which resulted in a regional distribution of the released fish and possibly improving the food availability.A new Sr+tagging technique was adopted to evaluate the release effect and quantify comparative release *** 1 fish among the 354 caught was found farther than 1 km from the release point in the following 6 *** results validated the promotion of the new stocking technique.

The Lamb wave technique is used in the detection of internal defects in plates. The reflection of the Lamb wave at the free edge of the plate has been shown to be rather complicated. The reflected wave is usually composed of infinite number of Lamb wave modes even in the case of incidence of one pure mode. The analysis of the reflection problem is complicated in nature as the orthogonality relations of the eigen modes of the Lamb wave concern both the stresses and displacements. We adopt the principle of the least squares as a new approach to simplify the analysis, in which the eigen-modes are taken as the trial function. It seems to be simple and effective. In most cases a good enough result can be obtained on using an 8- bit microcomputer. Here the coefficients of the various reflected modes are calculated, some interesting phenomena on the mode conversion are indicated and the conditions on the pure mode reflection are given.
