Lithofacies and pore features of marine-continental transitional shale and gas enrichment conditions of favorable lithofacies:A case study of Permian Longtan Formation in the Lintanchang area,southeast of Sichuan Basin,SW China

In this work,the Permian Longtan marine-continental transitional shale in the southeast of Sichuan Basin was taken as study object.Through petrology and geochemical analysis,lithofacies types of the marine-continental transitional shale were classified,key controlling factors of physical properties and gas content of the different shale lithofacies were analyzed.The research results show that the Longtan Formation marine-continental transitional shale in the study area has four types of lithofacies,namely,organic-lean calcareous shale,organic-lean mixed shale,organic-lean argillaceous shale,and organic-rich argillaceous shale,among which the organic-rich argillaceous shale is the most favorable lithofacies of the study area.The pore types of different lithofacies vary significantly and the clay mineral-related pore is the dominant type of the pore system in the study area.The main controlling factor of the physical properties is clay mineral content,and the most important factor affecting gas content is TOC content.Compared with marine shale,the marine-continental transitional shale has low average values,wide distribution range,and strong heterogeneity in TOC content,porosity,and pore structure parameters,but still contains some favorable layers with high physical properties and gas contents.The organic-rich clay shale deposited in tidal flat-lagoon system is most likely to form shale gas sweet spots,so it should be paid more attention in shale gas exploration.

Micro-and nano-fiber probes for optical sensing,imaging,and stimulation in biomedical applications

The flexibile nature of optical fiber enables it to offer remote-access capabilities,which could be used in many biomedical applications.This review focuses on different micro-and nano-structured fiber probes for applications in biosensing,imaging,and stimulations.The modifications to fiber could extend design freedom from waveguide optimization to functional material integration.Fiber probes with optimized waveguide structures or integrated functional materials could achieve enhanced optical mode interaction with biosamples,and hence obtain ultrasensitive biosensors with a remarkably low limit of detection.Furthermore,bioimaging with a high spatial resolution can be obtained by engineering dispersion and nonlinearity of light propagation in the fiber core or designing a metal-coated tapered fiber tip with a sub-wavelength aperture.Flat metasurfaces can be assembled on a fiber tip to achieve a large depth of focus and remove aberrations.Fiber is also a compact solution to realize the precise delivery of light for in vivo applications,such as deep brain stimulation.The optical beam size,shape,and direction could be steered by the probe parameters.Micro-and nano-technologies integrated with fiber contribute to various approaches to further improve detection limit,sensitivity,optical resolution,imaging depth,and stimulation precision.

Handgrip strength and the risk of major depressive disorder:a two-sample Mendelian randomisation study

Background Major depressive disorder(MDD)is a common psychiatric disease and a leading cause of disability worldwide.Handgrip strength(HGS)as an objective physical fitness test is a practical index for identifying many diseases.Previous studies drew different conclusions about the relationship between HGS and MDD.Aims We aim to explore whether HGS has an effect on the risk of MDD.Methods HGS-related single-nucleotide polymorphisms identified by a genome-wide association study were used as instrumental variables in this Mendelian randomisation(MR)study.Summary data on MDD were obtained from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium.Four methods were applied,including inverse variance weighted(IVW),MR Egger,weighted median and weighted mode.Additional sensitivity analyses,including leave-one-out,heterogeneity test,pleiotropy test and confounders identification,were conducted to test the robustness of our results.Results Each 1 kg increase in left HGS is associated with a 21.95%reduction in the risk of MDD(OR_(IVW)=0.781,95%CI:0.650 to 0.937,p=0.009),while no significant correlation exists in the estimation of right HGS(p=0.146).Sensitivity analyses demonstrated statistical significance(β_(IVW)=−0.195,p=0.023)after excluding some genetic loci that cause pleiotropy.Conclusions Increased left HGS is associated with a reduced risk of MDD.In the future,it may be used as an index for the clinical screening,observation and treatment of MDD.

A simple atomization approach enables monolayer dispersion of nano graphenes in cementitious composites with excellent strength gains

Carbon nano additives(CNAs)are critical to achieving the unique properties of functionalized composites,however,controlling the dispersion of CNAs in material matrix is always a challenging task.In this study,a simple atomization approach was successfully developed to promote the dispersion efficiency of graphene nanoplatelets(GNPs)in cement composites.This atomization approach can be integrated with the direct,indirect and combined ultrasonic stirrings in a homemade automatic stirring-atomization device.Mechanical and microstructure tests were performed on hardened cement pastes blended with GNPs in different stirring and mixing approaches.Results show that the direct ultrasonic stirrings enabled more homogeneous dispersions of GNP particles with a smaller size for a longer duration.The atomized droplets with the mean size of~100μm largely mitigated GNPs’agglomerations.Monolayer GNPs were observed in the cement matrix with the strength gain by up to 54%,and the total porosity decrease by 21%in 0.3 wt%GNPs dosage.The greatly enhanced dispersion efficiency of GNPs in cement also raised the cement hydration.This work provides an effective and manpower saving technique toward dispersing CNAs in engineering materials with great industrialization prospects.

Experimental investigation and theoretical modeling on scale behaviors of high salinity wastewater in zero liquid discharge process of coal chemical industry

Zero liquid discharge(ZLD)treatment and reuse equipment of high salinity wastewater in coal-chemical industry often occur in various types of blockage problems because of high salt content,affecting the long-term stability of the device.In this study,the effects of solution temperature,steel,reaction time and wall roughness on fouling were investigated.The changes in the contents of fouling and fouling substances were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed by XRD and EDS respectively,and the formation of scale was observed by SEM.The results show that with temperature increasing,Q235 steel is the most difficult to scale.Scaling rate of all salt scales reaches a maximum after 12 h,and the fouling rate decreases significantly from 12 to 48 h.It gradually stabilizes at 48 to 96 h.With the roughness increasing,the thickness of fouling layer increases,and a linear relationship is presented for 1 to 10 h.By comparing actual and simulated wastewater scaling rates,the relationship between actual and simulated wastewater scaling rates is y=ax-0.494.The composition of the scale was analyzed,calcium carbonate is the main product and increases with fouling time.Based on the above-mentioned results combining literatures,the hybrid prediction model with calcium carbonate as the main product is put forward.It is discussed microscopically that calcium carbonate is converted from aragonite and vaterite in a thermodynamically metastable state to calcite in a thermodynamically stable state.

Traditional medicine has garnered significant global recognition,with an estimated 80%of the global population using it.Therefore,it is essential to fully understand the integration of traditional medicines into current healthcare systems.This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the standard process to modernize traditional medicine scientifically in the context of modern biomedicine,further termed here as“scientization”.Specifically,we aim to summarize the advancements made in understanding the efficacy,effectiveness,and underlying mechanisms of herbal medicine.We also examined the transition from experience-to evidence-based medicine during acupuncture.Furthermore,we explore the development of universal safety and quality control standards.Finally,we discuss international trade and export markets for Chinese medical products.The development and integration of traditional medicine have allowed it to further improve human health,resulting in a more comprehensive health solution for the global population.

Silicon substrate-integrated hollow waveguide for miniaturized optical gas sensing

Gas sensors have a wide variety of applications.Among various existing gas sensing technologies,optical gas sensors have outstanding advantages.The development of the Internet of Things and consumer electronics has put stringent requirements on miniaturized gas sensing technology.Here,we demonstrate a chip-scale silicon substrate-integrated hollow waveguide(Si-iHWG) to serve as an optical channel and gas cell in an optical gas sensor.It is fabricated through silicon wafer etching and wafer bonding.The Si-i HWG chip is further assembled with an off-chip light source and detector to build a fully functional compact nondispersive infrared(NDIR) CO_(2) sensor.The chip size is 10 mm × 9 mm,and the dimension of the sensor excluding the microcontroller board is 50 mm × 25 mm × 16 mm.This chip solution with compactness,versatility,robustness,and low cost provides a cost-effective platform for miniaturized optical sensing applications ranging from air quality monitoring to con-sumer electronics.

Inhibition of subicular seizure-labeled c-fos+ neurons alleviates cognitive deficit in epilepsy

OBJECTIVE Cognitive deficit is a common comorbidity in temporal lobe epilepsy(TLE) and that is not well controlled by current therapeutics. Currently,how epileptic seizure affects cognitive performance remains largely unclear. The subiculum is the major output of the hippocampus, which projects to entorhinal cortex and other more distinct brain regions. Physiologically,the subiculum codes spatial working memory and navigation information including place, speed, and trajectory.Importantly, prior studies have noted the importance of the subiculum in the beginning, spreading, and generalizing process of hippocampal seizure. How seizure-activated neurons in subiculum participate in cognitive impairment remains largely elusive. METHODS In this study, we sought to label the subicular seizure-activated c-fos+neurons with a special promoter with enhanced synaptic activity-responsive element E-SARE in the subiculum,combined with chemogenetics and designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs(DREADDs), Ca2+fiber photometry approaches, and behavioral tasks, to reveal the role of these neurons in cognitive impairment in epilepsy. RESULTS We found that chemogenetic inhibition of subicular seizure-tagged c-fos+neurons(mainly CaMK Ⅱ α+glutamatergic neurons) alleviates seizure generalization and improves cognitive performance in the hippocampal CA3 kindling TLE model. While inhibition of seizure-labeled c-fos+GABAergic interneuron shows no effect on seizure and cognition. As a comparison, chemogenetic inhibition of the whole subicular CaMK Ⅱ α+neuron impairs cognitive function in na?ve mice in basal condition. Notably, inhibition of subicular seizure-tagged c-fos+neurons enhances the recruitment of cognitionresponsive c-fos+neurons via increasing neural excitability during cognition tasks. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrate that subicular seizure-activated c-fos+neurons contribute to cognitive impairment in TLE, suggesting seizure-tagged c-fos+neurons as the potential therapeutic target to alleviate cognitive impair
