Objective:To determine the genetic diversity of Plasmodium(P.)knowlesi isolates from Sabah,Malaysian Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia,targeting the S-type SSU rRNA gene and including aspects of natural selection and ***:Thirty-nine blood samples infected with *** were collected in Sabah,Malaysian Borneo and Peninsular *** S-type SSU rRNA gene was amplified using polymerase chain reaction,cloned into a vector,and *** natural selection and haplotype of the S-type SSU rRNA gene sequences were determined using DnaSP v6 and illustrated using NETWORK *** study's 39 S-type SSU rRNA sequences and eight sequences from the Genbank database were subjected to phylogenetic analysis using MEGA ***:Overall,the phylogenetic analysis showed no evidence of a geographical cluster of *** isolates from different areas in Malaysia based on the S-type SSU rRNA gene *** S-type SSU rRNA gene sequences were relatively conserved and with a purifying *** sharing of the S-type SSU rRNA gene was observed between the *** isolates in Sabah,Malaysian Borneo,but not between Sabah,Malaysian Borneo and Peninsular ***:This study suggests that the S-type SSU rRNA gene of *** isolates in Sabah,Malaysian Borneo,and Peninsular Malaysia has fewer polymorphic sites,representing the conservation of the *** features make the S-type SSU rRNA gene suitable for comparative studies,such as determining the evolutionary relationships and common ancestry among *** species.

Background:Intestinal parasitic infections(IPIs)among indigenous people have been widely documented in Malaysia,however,the prevalence of these infections remains *** the past,most studies have focused on specific species of parasites but polyparasitism has received limited *** addition,epidemiology studies on indigenous people tend to consider them as a homogenous group,whereas in reality different sub-ethnic groups have different cultural and living *** in living habits such as personal hygiene practices may predispose different groups to different parasitic *** better understand prevalence and risk factors of intestinal parasitism among different sub-ethnic groups,the present study was conducted among two sub-ethnic groups of indigenous people(Temuan and Mah Meri)residing in Selangor state,***:A cross-sectional study that focused on two distinct sub-ethnic groups was carried out from February to September *** samples were collected from 186 participants and examined using the formalin-ether sedimentation technique.A molecular approach was adopted to conduct a genetic characterisation of the ***,questionnaires were administered to obtain information on the demographics,socioeconomic backgrounds and behavioural risks relating to the participants,as well as information about their *** analyses(*** and multivariate logistic regression analyses)were performed to measure risk ***:For Temuan communities,trichuriasis(64.2%)was the most common infection found,preceding hookworm infection(34%),ascariasis(7.5%),giardiasis(14.2%)and amoebiasis(7.5%).As for the Mah Meri communities,trichuriasis(77.5%)prevailed over ascariasis(21.3%),hookworm(15%),giardiasis(7.5%)and amoebiasis(3.8%).Significant differences in proportions of trichuriasis,ascariasis and hookworm infections were observed between the Temuan and Mah Meri sub-ethnic *** was more

Seizures due to neurocysticercosis(NCC) is a neglected human-to-human transmitted disorder and an emerging problem worldwide.A substantial portion of recent onset seizures is known to be attributed to NCC in Taenia solium(***) endemic areas where populations which neither raise pigs nor eat pig meat are also at *** prevalence of NCC causing epilepsy has been reported in the underdeveloped areas of Southeast Asia(SEA) however,only fragmentary information on its incidence is available in countries like *** Malaysia *** infection was previously thought to be infrequent due to Muslim population majority and the religious prohibition of consuming pork,but it is not totally absent There is an evident lack of knowledge and awareness of the actual burden,routes of transmission,and the impact of NCC in this *** problem is assumed to be more prevalent particularly in cities because of the frequent inflow of possibly *** infected individuals or carriers among those who migrate from neighboring endemic countries to *** issue of imported cases that are likely to be emerging in Malaysia is highlighted *** accurate quantification of regional burdens of epilepsy due to NCC in Malaysia is warranted considering the disease emergence in its neighboring *** is suggested that the importance of NCC be recognized through quantification of its burden,and also to collect epidemiological data for its subsequent elimination in line of World Health Organization's mission for control of cysticercosis as a neglected tropical *** this review the need as well as a strategy for neurc-care center screening of epilepsy cases,and various issues with possible explanations are *** is also proposed that NCC be declared as a reportable disease which is one of the eradicable public health problems in SEA.

Epidemiology and immunodiagnostics of Strongyloides stercoralis infections among migrant workers in Malaysia

Objective: To investigate the status of Strongyloides(S.) stercoralis infections among migrant workers in Malaysia for the first time and identify risk ***: Four diagnostic methods were employed for the detection of S. stercoralis including microscopy, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) using a commercial kit, ELISA using the rSs1a antigen and polymerase chain reaction(PCR). Low and semi-skilled workers from five working sectors(i.e. manufacturing, food service, agriculture and plantation, construction and domestic service) were tested on a voluntary basis. Results: The overall seroprevalence of S. stercoralis from 483 workers employing the ELISA commercial kit for IgG was 35.8%(n=173;95% CI: 31.5%-40.1%) whereas seroprevalence using the rSs1a-ELISA was 13.0%(n=63;95% CI: 10.0%-16.0%). Cross tabulation between the ELISA commercial kit and rSs1a-ELISA showed that only 6.4%(n=31;95% CI: 4.2%-8.6%) of the samples were positive in both tests. Microscopic examination of all 388 fecal samples were negative;however subsequent testing by a nested PCR against DNA from the same samples successfully amplified DNA from three male subjects(0.8%;3/388). Male workers, India and Myanmar nationality, food service occupation and those living in the hostel were statistically significant with seroprevalence(Paigns and programs aimed at increasing awareness and healthy behaviors.

Stenting as a bridge to surgery in obstructing colon cancer:Longterm recurrence pattern and competing risk of mortality

BACKGROUND Stenting as a bridge to curative surgery(SBTS)for obstructing colon cancer(OCC)has been associated with possibly worse oncological *** To evaluate the recurrence patterns,survival outcomes,and colorectal cancer(CRC)-specific death in patients undergoing SBTS for *** Data from 62 patients undergoing SBTS at a single tertiary centre over ten years between 2007 and 2016 were retrospectively *** outcomes were recurrence patterns,overall survival(OS),cancer-specific survival(CSS),and CRC-specific *** and CSS were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier *** risk analysis with cumulative incidence function(CIF)was used to estimate CRC-specific mortality with other cause-specific death as a competing ***-Gray regressions were performed to determine prognostic factors of CRC-specific *** and multivariate subdistribution hazard ratios and their corresponding Wald test P values were *** 28 patients(45.2%)developed metastases after a median period of 16 *** the 18 patients with single-site metastases:Four had lung-only metastases(14.3%),four had liver-only metastases(14.3%),and 10 had peritoneum-only metastases(35.7%),while 10 patients had two or more sites of metastatic disease(35.7%).The peritoneum was the most prevalent(60.7%)site of metastatic involvement(17/28).The median follow-up duration was 46 mo.26(41.9%)of the 62 patients died,of which 16(61.5%)were CRC-specific deaths and 10(38.5%)were deaths owing to other causes. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS probabilities were 88%, 74%, and 59%;1-, 3-, and5-year CSS probabilities were 97%, 83%, and 67%. Background:Access to clean and safe drinking water that is free from pathogenic protozoan parasites,especially Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia that cause gastrointestinal illness in humans,is still an issue in Southeast Asia(SEA).This study is the first attempt to detect the aforementioned protozoan parasites in water samples from countries in SEA,using real-time polymerase chain reaction(qPCR)***:A total of 221 water samples of 10 l each were collected between April and October 2013 from Malaysia(53),Thailand(120),the Philippines(33),and Vietnam(15).A physicochemical analysis was *** water samples were processed in accordance with the US Environmental Protection Agency’s methods 1622/1623.1,microscopically observed and subsequently screened using qPCR ***:Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected in treated water samples from the Philippines(1/10),with a concentration of 0.06±0.19 oocyst/L,and untreated water samples from Thailand(25/93),Malaysia(17/44),and the Philippines(11/23),with concentrations ranging from 0.13±0.18 to 0.57±1.41 oocyst/*** cysts were found in treated water samples from the Philippines(1/10),with a concentration of 0.02±0.06 cyst/L,and in untreated water samples from Thailand(20/93),Vietnam(5/10),Malaysia(22/44),and the Philippines(16/23),with concentrations ranging from 0.12±0.3 to 8.90±19.65 cyst/*** pathogens *** and *** were detected using using qPCR assays by targeting the 138-bp fragment and the small subunit gene,*** was detected in untreated water samples from the Philippines(1/23)and Malaysia(2/44),whilst,*** detected was detected in treated water samples from the Philippines(1/10)and in untreated water samples from Thailand(21/93),Malaysia(12/44),and the Philippines(17/23).Nitrate concentration was found to have a high positive correlation with(oo)cyst(0.993).Conclusion:The presence of(oo)cysts in the water samples means that there is potential risk for
