Elevated osteoclast(OC)activity is a major contributor to inflammatory bone loss(IBL)during chronic inflammatory ***,the specific OC precursors(OCPs)responding to inflammatory cues and the underlying mechanisms leading to IBL are poorly *** identified two distinct OCP subsets:Ly6C^(hi)CD11b^(hi) inflammatory OCPs(iOCPs)induced during chronic inflammation,and homeostatic Ly6C^(hi)CD11b^(lo)OCPs(hOCPs)which remained *** and proteomic characterization revealed that while iOCPs were rare and displayed low osteoclastogenic potential under normal conditions,they expanded during chronic inflammation and generated OCs with enhanced *** contrast,hOCPs were abundant and manifested high osteoclastogenic potential under normal conditions but generated OCs with low activity and were unresponsive to the inflammatory *** derived from iOCPs expressed higher levels of resorptive and metabolic proteins than those generated from hOCPs,highlighting that different osteoclast populations are formed by distinct *** further identified the TNF-αand S100A8/A9 proteins as key regulators that control the iOCP response during chronic ***,we demonstrated that the response of iOCPs but not that of hOCPs was abrogated in tnf-α^(-/-)mice,in correlation with attenuated *** findings suggest a central role for iOCPs in IBL *** can serve as potential biomarkers for IBL detection and possibly as new therapeutic targets to combat IBL in a wide range of inflammatory conditions.

When should we give up on expectant management for patients with proximal ureteral stones?

Background:Proximal ureteral stones(PUS)have relatively low rates of spontaneous ***,some patients do on expectant *** aim was to compare risk factors for surgical intervention in patients with PUS who underwent primary intervention to those subjected to expectant *** and methods:We retrospectively reviewed the medical charts of patients presented to the emergency room with symptoms of renal colic and underwent computerized tomography between August 2016 and August 2017.A total of 97 consecutive patients were identified with up to 10 mm *** collected patient demographics,clinical,and imaging data,and performed binary regression analysis for risk of ***:The average age was 49years(range 17-97)and average stone size was 7.1 mm(range 3-10).Forty-one patients underwent immediate intervention while the remaining 56 patients were treated *** the 56 patients treated conservatively,26 underwent delayed intervention while 30 reported spontaneous stone *** univariate analysis of all 97 patients,statistically significant risk factors for intervention were found based on stone size,age,serum lymphocyte,platelet counts,and stone *** these risk factors,stone size≥7mm(p=0.012,odds ratio=5.4)and platelet count?230K/mL(p=0.027,odds ratio=4.9)remained statistically significant on multivariate ***:Stone size and platelet count were found to be risk factors for surgical intervention in patients with up to 10 mm *** findings may assist in identifying patients who are more suitable for conservative approach.

Adjuvant chemotherapy after radical cystectomy:Do all patients who need chemotherapy after surgery actually receive it?

Background:Compliance with the guideline recommendations for neoadjuvant chemotherapyin patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer is *** adjuvant chemotherapy approach has the advantage of pathology-based decision-making,allowing for pa-tient *** addition,radical surgery is not delayed and treatment-related toxicity does not impair surgical *** proportion of patients who completed chemotherapy after cystectomy among those who were fit and in need of treatment were *** rea-sons for not completing adjuvant chemotherapy were determined.Materials and methods:We retrospectively evaluated all patients who had undergone radical cystectomy at our center over thelast 7 *** for adjuvant chemotherapy included pathological T＞2,any node+,or surgical margin *** patients who were fit for chemotherapy before surgery were included in the study.Results:Of the 52 patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer,14 received neoadjuvant chemotherapy or unfit for chemotherapy were *** the remaining 38 patients,14(37％)had bladder-confined cancers and did not require additional *** the 24 patients who needed chemotherapy and were fit to receive it,8 patients completed treatment(33％),and 3 discontinued treatment due to *** patients(50％)declined chemotherapy,whereas 1 patient became unfit for chemotherapy after surgery.Conclusions:While the adjuvant chemotherapy approach could save unnecessary treatment in 37％of patients,two-thirds of those who needed chemotherapy did not complete *** refusal was the primary reason for not receiving treatment.

In Sterile Insect Technique(SIT)programs,massive numbers of insects are reared,sterilized,and released in the field to impede reproduction of pest *** domestication and rearing processes used to produce insects for SIT programs may have significant evolutionary impacts on life history and reproductive *** assessed the effects of domestication on sexual performance of laboratory reared Queensland fruit fly,Bactrocera tryoni,by comparing an old(49 generations)and a young colony(5 generations).We evaluated mating propensity,mating latency,copula duration,sperm transfer,and ability to induce sexual inhibition in ***,both males and females from the old colony had greater mating propensity than those from the young *** duration was longer when females were from the old *** was no evidence of sexual isolation between the colonies as males and females from the two colonies had similar propensity to mate with flies from either *** from the old colony transferred more sperm regardless of which colony their mate was ***,males from both colonies were similarly able to induce sexual inhibition in their mates and were also similarly able to secure copulations with already-mated *** effects of domestication on sperm transfer,coupled with maintained ability to induce sexual inhibition in mates and to secure copulations with previously mated females,highlights that domestication may have little effect,or even positive effects,on some aspects of sexual performance that may advantage mass-reared *** in SIT programs.

Little effect of climate change on body size of herbivorous beetles

Ongoing climate change affects various aspects of an animal＇s life, with impor- tant effects on distribution range and phenology. The relationship between global warming and body size changes in mammals and birds has been widely studied, with most find- ings indicating a decline in body size over time. Nevertheless, little data exist on similar size change patterns of invertebrates in general and insects in particular, and it is unclear whether insects should decrease in size or not with climate warming. We measured over 4000 beetle specimens, belonging to 29 beetle species in 8 families, collected in Israel during the last 100 years. The sampled species are all herbivorous. We examined whether beetle body size had changed over the years, while also investigating the relationships between body size and annual temperature, precipitation, net primary productivity （NPP） at the collection site and collection month. None of the environmental variables, including the collection year, was correlated with the size of most of the studied beetle species, while there were strong interactions of all variables with species. Our results, though mostly neg- ative, suggest that the effect of climate change on insect body size is species-specific and by no means a general macro-ecological rule. They also suggest that the intrapopulation variance in body size of insects collected as adults in the field is large enough to conceal intersite environmental effects on body size, such as the effect of temperature and NPE
