The operating circuits for LED （light emitting diode） lamp composed of diodes and DC capacitors only are proposed. The proposed circuit is based on a double-voltage rectifier circuit and a Cockcroft-Walton circuit. The circuit can operate LED without flicker, and is free from switching noise since high frequency switching circuit is not used. To replace an AC capacitor by a DC capacitor for the ballast, a diode is connected across the capacitor in parallel, and the operating voltage of LED unit is kept at the value greater than the peak voltage of the input power source. The circuit realizes high efficiency and high input power factor compared with the operating circuits on the market. Cockcroft-Walton-type circuit can operate many LED devices in series connection. Series connection is preferable for fabricating LED unit of a constant voltage characteristic. Moreover, fairly flat waveform of LED operating current is realized by Cockcrofl-Walton-type circuit, even though capacitor ballast is used.

AIM To demonstrate the feasibility of the wearable smart glasses, Pico Linker, in guide wire insertion under fluoroscopic guidance. METHODS Under a fluoroscope, a surgeon inserted 3 mm guide wires into plastic femurs from the lateral cortex to the femoral head center while the surgeon did or did not wear Pico Linker, which are wearable smart glasses where the fluoroscopic video was displayed(10 guide wires each). RESULTS The tip apex distance, radiation exposure time and total insertion time were significantly shorter while wearing the Pico Linker smart glasses. CONCLUSION This study indicated that the Pico Linker smart glasses can improve accuracy, reduce radiation exposure time, and reduce total insertion time. This is due to the fact that the Pico Linker smart glasses enable surgeons to keep their eyes on the operation field.

The authors have proposed that a counter-rotating type tidal stream power unit mounted rigidly on a pile, and outputs of the power unit and forces acting on the pile were investigated experimentally at a previous paper, A single propeller makes the pile undertake a reaction force orthogonal to the stream direction. On the contrary, proposed counter-rotating propellers do not require undertaking the reaction force of the pile, because the rotational torque is counter-balanced in the unit. This advantage means that the unit can be moored by only one cable. Continuously, this paper proposes such a power unit with tandem propellers, and experimentally investigates a behavior of the unit floating in a water channel. The vibrations of the power unit are induced from not only the individual but also the interacting rotations of the front and the rear propellers.

The authors have invented a unique counter-rotating type tidal stream power unit, which is composed of tandem propellers and a double rotational armature type generator without a stator. The front and the rear propellers drive, as for an upstream type, the inner and the outer rotational armatures in the counter-rotating directions respectively, which keep the rotational torques counter-balanced between both propellers and armatures. This paper investigates experimentally the output and forces acting on a pile in a water channel, to get design materials of the mono-pile type tidal stream power unit. The output is maximal at the moderate rotational speed, as the same as a wind turbine. The force acting on the pile is affected by the drag, the Karman vortex and the dynamic balances of the tandem propellers, and has dominant frequencies due to not only the individual but also the interacting rotation of the front and the rear propellers.

Pediatric living donor liver transplantation for congenital hepatic fibrosis using a mother's graft with von Meyenburg complex: A case report

This is the first report of living donor liver transplantation(LDLT) for congenital hepatic fibrosis(CHF) using a mother's graft with von Meyenburg complex. A 6-year-old girl with CHF, who suffered from recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding, was referred to our hospital for liver transplantation. Her 38-year-old mother was investigated as a living donor and multiple biliary hamartoma were seen on her computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scan. The mother's liver function tests were normal and she did not have any organ abnormality, including polycystic kidney disease. LDLT using the left lateral segment(LLS) graft from the donor was performed. The donor LLS graft weighed 250 g; the graft recipient weight ratio was 1.19%. The operation and post-operative course of the donor were uneventful and she was discharged on post-operative day(POD) 8. The graft liver function was good, and the recipient was discharged on POD 31. LDLT using a graft with von Meyenburg complex is safe and useful. Long-term follow-up is needed with respect to graft liver function and screening malignant tumors.

Comparison of strength values and laterality in various muscle contractions between competitive swimmers and untrained persons

Competitive swimmers may gain a specific training effect as the result of long term exercise in the water. This study aimed to compare isometric, non-isokinetic and isokinetic muscle strengths in competitive swimmers and untrained persons. Twelve young male adults without exercise experience for over three years and twelve swimmers with over 10 years of competitive swimming experience performed various strength tests. Non-isokinetic tests were evaluated using one repetition of maximum half squat, vertical jump, and drop jump. Isometric and isokinetic (60 and 180 deg/s) muscle strengths were measured by both legs in knee extension and flexion. There were no significant differences between non-isokinetic and isometric muscle strengths of both groups. On the other hand, all isokinetic parameters in both angular velocities were significantly larger in competitive swimmers. There was significant laterality of isokinetic strength in untrained persons, but not in competitive swimmers. In addition, right and left differences of isokinetic strength tended to be smaller in competitive swimmers. In conclusion, competitive swimmers tended to be superior only in isokinetic strength, which is a similar muscle contraction in the water, and have less right and left differences.

AIM: To investigate how hepatitis C virus (HCV) G1b infection influences the particle number of ***: The numbers of lipoprotein particles in fasting sera from 173 Japanese subjects, 82 with active HCV G1b infection (active HCV group) and 91 with cleared HCV infection (SVR group), were examined. Serum lipoprotein was fractionated by high-performance liquid chromatography into twenty fractions. The cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in each fraction were measured using LipoSEARCH. The number of lipoprotein particles in each fraction was calculated using a newly developed algorithm, and the relationship between chronic HCV G1b infection and the lipoprotein particle number was determined by multiple linear regression ***: The median number of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles was significantly lower in the active HCV group [1182 nmol/L, interquartile range (IQR): 444 nmol/L] than in the SVR group (1363 nmol/L, IQR: 472 nmol/L, P < 0.001), as was that of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles (14168 nmol/L vs 15054 nmol/L, IQR: 4114 nmol/L vs 3385 nmol/L, P = 0.042). The number of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles was similar between the two groups. Among the four LDL sub-fractions, the number of large LDL particles was similar between the two groups. However, the numbers of medium (median: 533.0 nmol/L, IQR: 214.7 nmol/L vs median: 633.5 nmol/L, IQR: 229.6 nmol/L, P < 0.001), small (median: 190.9 nmol/L, IQR: 152.4 nmol/L vs median: 263.2 nmol/L, IQR: 159.9 nmol/L; P < 0.001), and very small LDL particles (median: 103.5 nmol/L, IQR: 66.8 nmol/L vs median: 139.3 nmol/L, IQR: 67.3 nmol/L, P < 0.001) were significantly lower in the active HCV group than in the SVR group, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated an association between HCV G1b infection and the decreased numbers of medium, small, and very small LDL particles. AIM： To examine the influence of lipoprotein lipase （LPL） gene polymorphism in ulcerative colitis （UC） patients.METHODS： Peripheral blood was obtained from 131 patients with UC and 106 healthy controls for DNA extraction. We determined LPL gene polymorphisms affecting the enzyme at Ser447stop, as well as Hind Ⅲ and Pvu Ⅱ polymorphisms using PCR techniques. PCR products were characterized by PCR-RFLP and direct sequencing. Polymorphisms were examined for association with clinical features in UC patients. Genotype frequencies for LPL polymorphisms were also compared between UC patients and controls.RESULTS： In patients with onset at age 20 years or younger, C/G and G/G genotypes for Ser447stop polymorphism were more prevalent than C/C genotype （OR = 3.13, 95% CI = 0.95-10.33）. Patients with H^＋/- or H^-/- genotype for Hind Ⅲ polymorphism also were more nu merous than those with H^＋/＋ genotype （OR = 2.51, 95% CI = 0.85-7.45）. In the group with H^＋/＋ genotype for Hind Ⅲ polymorphism, more patients had serum triglyceride concentrations over 150 mg/dL than patients with H^＋/- or H^- genotype （P 〈 0.01, OR = 6.46, 95% CI = 1.39-30.12）. Hypertriglycemia was also more prevalent in patients with P^＋/＋ genotypes for Pvu Ⅱ polymorphism （P 〈 0.05, OR = 3.0, 95% CI = 1.06-8.50）. Genotype frequency for LPL polymorphism did not differ significantly between UC patients and controls.
