Real-life experience of ranibizumab therapy for neovascular age-related macular degeneration from Turkey

AIM： To report the real-life experience and clinical results of intravitreal ranibizumab injections to neovascular agerelated macular degeneration（nAMD） in a single institution in ***： A total of 101 eyes of 89 patients with nAMD treated with intravitreal ranibizumab injection, followed up for at least 24 mo between 2009 and June 2014, which were evaluated retrospectively. A pro re nata（PRN） treatment protocol was performed after the patients had received three, monthly loading injections. Best corrected visual acuity（BCVA） and central macular thickness measurements were evaluated at baseline and 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 mo. Number of injections and visits were also ***： Of the 89 patients, 34（38.2%） were male and 55（61.8%） were female and the mean age was 74.0±9.5（52-91）y. The mean follow-up period was 24.82±4.4（24-29）mo. Mean number of visits was 8.4±1.12（7-12） in the first year and 6.6±1.33（4-12） in the second year. The mean number of injections was 5.8±1.6（3-10） and 4.2±2.2（0-9） in the first and second year, respectively. The mean BCVA was 59±15.8 letters at baseline by the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study（ETDRS） chart. The mean BCVA at 3, 12, and 24 mo was 70.3±15.9, 67.9±14.3 and 67.3±16.9 letters, respectively. Improvement in visual acuity for each of the visits from baseline was found to be statistically significant（P〈0.01）. Visual acuity in 9 eyes at month 3, 7 eyes at month 12, and 13 eyes at month 24 did not change. The mean central macular thickness（CMT） was 437.99±164.78 μm at baseline. The mean CMT was 348.05±138.47 μm, 349.27±139.79 μm, and 344.13±146.30 μm at months 3, 12, and 24, respectively. The decrease in CMT for each of the visits from baseline was found to be statistically significant（P〈0.01）.CONCLUSION： Anatomical and functional achievement are obtained in our study, but the mean number of injections and visits are found to be lower than the findings reported in randomized controlled clinical trials in the litera

Comparison of Histopathology of Transverse Carpal Ligament in Patients with Idiopathic Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Hemodialysis Patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The aim of this paper is to point out the growing clinical importance of Carpal tunnel syndrome in patients on hemodialysis especially in aspect of the diagnosis, treatment and possible cause of the syndrome. Sixty patients with clinical diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome was defined as the presence of two subjective symptoms (numbness, tingling in the median nerve distribution). The diagnosis was confirmed by electromyography. The patients with rheumatoid arthritis, thalasemia and thyroid dysfunction and the patients having pain due to arthritis or tenosynovitis were excluded. Fifty patients with clinical diagnosis of idiopathic CTS and seven hemodialysis patients having CTS were analyzed. Of 50 patients (47 female, 3 male) with clinical diagnosis of idiopathic CTS, 11 patients (22%) were involved bilaterally, 25 patients (50%) were affected only on the right and 14 patients (28%) were symptomatic only on the left. Of 7 hemodialysis patients (2 female, 5 male) with CTS, 1 patient (14%) was involved bilaterally (having two-sided A-V fistula), 4 patients (57%) were affected only on the right and 2 patients (28%) were symptomatic only on the left. There was significant correlation between the arteriovenous fistula and subsequent development of CTS. The all patients had fistulas in the affected side (5 of them were patent and 2 were occluded). In the relation between the duration of hemodialysis and development of CTS, 4 patients were over 10 years of hemodialysis, 2 patients were between 5 to 9 years and only 1 patient was below 4 years of duration. Amyloid deposit was demonstrated in 4 of 7 operated hands in the hemodialysis group. When we compared the presence of amyloid deposits in these groups, the difference between these two groups were found as statistically significant (p < 0.009). Analysis of geriatric patients with minor spinal trauma admitted to the emergency department of a university hospital

　本文的主要目的是研究利用不同类型的皮革废弃物制备有用的材料。在450和600℃的N2气氛中，将三种不同类型的制革废弃物（铬鞣革屑、植鞣革屑和磨革灰）在固定床反应器中进行热解处理。通过热解，得到了气体、油、碳酸铵和含碳残留物。本文研究了温度和皮革废弃物类型对热解产物分布的影响。磨革灰的油产率最高（ca．23％），而其它的废弃物只有ca.9％。元素分析和柱层析的结果表明，热解油经过重新处理后，可作为燃料或化工原料。含碳残留物（焦碳）的产率在37．5％到48.5％之间，它们的卡路里值在4300到6000kcal·kg^-1之间，适合用作固体燃料。此外，本文用CO2对焦炭进行活化，制备出了活性炭。由铬鞣革屑制备的活性炭，其表面积最大（799.5m^2·g^-1）它可以作为吸附剂来吸附水溶液中的染料。
