An association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease has been repeatedly rep orted. Several studies have focused on levels of gammaglutamyltransferase (GGT) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in relation to cardiovascular outcomes. Evidence indicates that GGT may have a potential role for cardiovascular risk stratifi cation while the role of ALT for cardiac prognosis remains controversial. A conceptual framework that includes not only GGT and ALT but also markers of hepatocyte apoptosis such as cytokeratin-18 fragments should be developed.

AIM： To report the real-life experience and clinical results of intravitreal ranibizumab injections to neovascular agerelated macular degeneration（nAMD） in a single institution in ***： A total of 101 eyes of 89 patients with nAMD treated with intravitreal ranibizumab injection, followed up for at least 24 mo between 2009 and June 2014, which were evaluated retrospectively. A pro re nata（PRN） treatment protocol was performed after the patients had received three, monthly loading injections. Best corrected visual acuity（BCVA） and central macular thickness measurements were evaluated at baseline and 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 mo. Number of injections and visits were also ***： Of the 89 patients, 34（38.2%） were male and 55（61.8%） were female and the mean age was 74.0±9.5（52-91）y. The mean follow-up period was 24.82±4.4（24-29）mo. Mean number of visits was 8.4±1.12（7-12） in the first year and 6.6±1.33（4-12） in the second year. The mean number of injections was 5.8±1.6（3-10） and 4.2±2.2（0-9） in the first and second year, respectively. The mean BCVA was 59±15.8 letters at baseline by the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study（ETDRS） chart. The mean BCVA at 3, 12, and 24 mo was 70.3±15.9, 67.9±14.3 and 67.3±16.9 letters, respectively. Improvement in visual acuity for each of the visits from baseline was found to be statistically significant（P〈0.01）. Visual acuity in 9 eyes at month 3, 7 eyes at month 12, and 13 eyes at month 24 did not change. The mean central macular thickness（CMT） was 437.99±164.78 μm at baseline. The mean CMT was 348.05±138.47 μm, 349.27±139.79 μm, and 344.13±146.30 μm at months 3, 12, and 24, respectively. Solar air heaters are at the centre of interest owing to their widespread use for various *** the study,thermal performance analysis of a solar air heater that can be easily produced from daily waste materials is *** system has a low-cost structure with both waste material use and a simple *** proposed system is tested under different climatic conditions,and the energetic and the exergetic performance figures are obtained for the first time in *** is observed from the experimental tests that the results are stable and coherent as well as in good accordance with the similar attempts in literature with some cost reductions and performance *** performance analyses indicate that the maximum energy efficiency of the system is about 21%,whereas the exergy efficiency is 1.8%.The energetic and exergetic outputs of the system are also determined to be 27 W and 3 W,respectively,which is promising.

In light of the growing epidemics of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD),identification and validation of the novel biochemical surrogate markers for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)are paramount to reduce the necessity for liver *** availability of such markers has tremendous potential to radically alter the management strategies of NAFLD patients and to monitor the disease *** current biomarkers do not entirely fulfill the many requirements for the identification of patients with NASH,they should not discourage our quest,but remind us that we need to cognize the challenges ahead.

To the Editor:The nomenclature for steatotic liver disease has been a topic of debate since *** conventional expression,non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD),was introduced in 1980 to describe the occurrence of steatosis in the absence of other hepatic ***,in recent years,there has been a growing movement to phase out and retire this *** 2020,Eslam et al^([1])proposed a new definition—metabolic(dysfunction)associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)—redefining the disease to include hepatic steatosis along with other factors such as diabetes,obesity,overweight,or meeting the criteria for metabolic dysfunction.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) is generally considered as the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome(MS).Although there is no doubt that NAFLD is tightly linked to the MS,the diagnosis of NAFLD encompasses a broad range of histological entities and as a composite phenotype may be hindering attempts to understand the mechanistic basis of these *** awareness that NAFLD is not solely and invariably associated with the MS is a useful means to help direct future *** should be aware that mechanisms other than insulin resistance may contribute to the chronic inflammatory processes that underpin the development of liver fat accumulation and the subsequent architectural distortion of the *** studies with special focus on hemoglobin as a risk factor for the development of NAFLD in the absence of MS should be performed.

AIM: To investigate serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in relation to the clinical,biochemical,ultrasonographic and histological characteristics of patients with hepatitis C virus. METHODS: Duration of disease,HCV-RNA,liver steatosis,and the hepatitis activity index (HAI) were correlated with serum ALT in 36 patients with HCV. ALT values were also investigated in 16 control subjects without any liver diseases. RESULTS: In bivariate analyses,ALT levels correlated with duration of HCV infection (P < 0.01),HCV-RNA (P < 0.05),and the HAI (P < 0.01). Among the components of the HAI,ALT concentrations were significantly associated with periportal bridging/necrosis (P < 0.01) and fibrosis (P < 0.05). In multivariate analysis,periportal bridging/ necrosis (β = 0.508; P < 0.01),duration of HCV infection (β = 0.413; P < 0.01),and HCV-RNA (β = 0.253; P < 0.05) were independently associated with ALT activity. The normal ALT activity for men and women was < 23 IU/L and < 22 IU/L,respectively. CONCLUSION: In patients with HCV,alterations in the liver tissue as reflected by ALT elevation are mainly associated with periportal bridging/necrosis,viral load and duration of disease. A cut-off value < 23 IU/L distinguished with high diagnostic accuracy healthy controls from patients with HCV.
