Pseudogamous Apomixis in Maize and Sorghum in Diploid-Tetraploid Crosses

Apomictic seed development is a complex process including formation of unreduced embryo sac,parthenogenetic embryo development from the egg cell,and endosperm formation either autonomously,or due to fertilization of polar nuclei by the sperm(under pseudogamous form of apomixis).In the latter case,an obstacle to the normal endosperm development is disturbance of maternal(m)-to-paternal(p)genomic ratio 2m:1p that occurs in the cases of pollination of unreduced embryo sac with haploid *** of tetraploid pollinators can overcome this problem because in such crosses maternal-to-paternal genomic ratio is 4m:2p that provides formation of kernels with plump *** tetraploid lines as pollen parents we observed formation of plump kernels on the ears and panicles of diploid maize and sorghum *** kernels had hybrid endosperm and diploid maternal-type embryo or hybrid embryo with different ploidy level(2n,3n,4n).The frequencies of plump kernels on the ear ranged from 0.2-0.3%to 5.7-6.2%counting from the number of ***-type plants were found in two maize lines,their frequency varying from 10.7 to 37.5%of the progeny *** CMS-lines of sorghum pollinated with tetraploid sorghum accessions,the frequency of plump kernels ranged from 0.6 to 14.0%counting from the number of ovaries;the frequency of maternal-type plants varied from 33.0 up to 96.1%.The hybrid nature of endosperm of the kernels that gave rise to maternal-type plants has been proved by marker gene expression and by SDS-electrophoresis of endosperm *** data testify to variable modes of seed formation under diploid×tetraploid crosses in maize and sorghum both by amphi-and by ***,usage of tetraploid pollinators might be a promising approach for isolation of apomixis in maize and sorghum accessions.

La1?xSr x MnO3 nanoparticles were synthesized by precipitation from diethylene glycol solution. Features of synthesis were studied using 1Н, 13С, 139La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigations. The obtained results showed that the complexation reaction between diethylene glycol and metal cations takes place during the synthesis. These complexes decomposed at 200 °C and an amorphous precursor (La,Sr)MnO3 was formed. According to X-ray results, the crystallization of the perovskite structure began at 600 °C and finished at 800 °C. Microstructural studies showed that obtained nanoparticles are weakly agglomerated and have small sizes. Based on these nanoparticles, magnetic fluid was prepared which was effectively heated under an alternating magnetic field.

A misfit layer sulfide(BiS)_(1.2)(TiS_(2))_(2) with a natural superlattice structure has been shown to be a promising thermoelectric material,but its high carrier concentration should be reduced so as to further optimize the thermoelectric ***,ordinary acceptor doping has not succeeded because of the non-parabolic band *** this paper,we have successfully doped chromium ions into the Ti sites,which can maintain or even enhance the high effective mass of electrons so as to effectively improve ZT value.X-ray diffraction analysis,coupled with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,shows that chromium has been substituted into titanium sites in TiS2 layers and confirms its ionic *** chromium doping has successfully reduced the carrier concentration with the subsequent reduction of electrical *** other acceptor dopants(alkaline earth metals),chromium also enhances Seebeck coefficient and the effective mass,which can possibly be attributed to the formation of additional resonant states near Fermi *** the power factor does not improve,the significant reduction in the electronic part of the thermal conductivity leads to a measurable improvement in ZT.

Coal has been dominating the electricity supply in Indonesia,especially in long-term power generation from fossil *** dominance is due to lower production costs in coal-fired power plant ***,this low price is only based on monetary costs and ignores the social ***,this study aims to quantify the social costs of coal-fired *** QUERI-AirPacts modeling,the present study quantifies the social costs resulting from the Tenayan Raya coal-fired generation in Riau,*** includes the levelized cost of electricity and health costs into the generation *** that,this study calculates the net present value,internal rate return,and project payback *** study found that as much as$50.22/MWh was the levelized cost of ***$15.978/MWh or$0.015978/kWh was the social cost that was not included in the generating *** the electricity production level of 1,380,171.69 MWh per year,there is an expected extra cost of$22,052,383.30 uncounted when externalities are *** instance,the net present value(NPV)is lower and even negative when external costs are included(-$24,062,274.19)compared to$176,108,091.52 when externalities are not *** internal rate of return(IRR)is much higher when the social costs are not *** payback period is also shorter when the social costs are excluded than when the externalities are *** global number indicates that the inclusion of external costs would impact NPV,IRR,and the payback *** result implies that the government should internalize the external cost to stimulate the electricity producers to conduct cost-benefit *** cost-benefit analysis mechanism would lead the producers to be more efficient.

Russia is an important strategic cooperative partner of China. Sino-Russian strategiccooperative partnership has kept good momentum, witnessing comprehensive and rapiddevelopment since a smooth transition was secured, and the border disputes have been settleddown. Stabilization with China is seen by many analysts alike, possibly is Russia’s greatestforeign policy success over the past decade. The Russian-Chinese relationship is complex and has a long history of shared *** was the first country that established diplomatic relations with PRC and2009marked the60years anniversary of the diplomatic relations between two countries. However, when it comesto Sino-Russian bilateral energy relations, complexities and contradictions are magnified beyondconventional practices. Russia and China are natural energy partners. Russia is the world’slargest producer of oil and natural gas China, on the other hand, is the world’s largest energyconsumer, and vitally needs energy resources and power to build its economy and provide itspeople with energy supply. This relationship has been characterized by Anders Aslund of thePeterson Institute as “having an enormous complementarity between Russia, which hascommodities, and China, which has cheap labor and manufacturing." In spite of recentadvancements in cooperative energy engagement, and despite public overtures by the leadershipof both countries to the importance and vitality of deepening engagement where both energy andpower are concerned, the pace of progress has been slow and encumbered by mutual mistrustand differing policy agendas. The Sino-Russian ‘strategic relationship may not be all that it isportrayed to be. Unrecorded alcohol includes illegally distributed alcohol as well as homemade or surrogate alcohol which is unintended for consumption by humans(e.g.,cosmetics containing alcohol).The highest unrecorded alcohol consumption occurs in Eastern Europe and some of these countries have an over proportional liver cirrhosis *** besides ethanol have been hypothesized as being responsible for this *** the other hand,chemical investigations were unable to prove that unrecorded alcohol regularly contains contaminants above toxicological ***,illegally produced spirits regularly contain higher percentages of alcohol(above 45%by volume),but for considerably less costs compared with licit beverages,potentially causing more problematic patterns of *** this review,it is investigated whether patterns of drinking rather than product composition can explain the liver cirrhosis mortality *** examination of World Health Organization country data shows that the originally detected correlation of the percentage of unrecorded alcohol consumption and liver cirrhosis mortality rates disappears when the data is adjusted for the prevalence of heavy episodic *** may be concluded that there is currently a lack of data to demonstrate causality between the composition of illicit spirits(e.g.,higher levels of certain contaminants in home-produced products)and liver toxicity on a population *** may be cases of poisoning with antiseptic liquids containing compounds such as polyhexamethyleneguanidine,which were reported to be consumed as surrogate alcohol in Russia,leading to an outbreak of acute cholestatic liver injury,histologically different from conventional alcoholic liver disease.

A 3D morphometric perspective for facial gender analysis and classification using geodesic path curvature features

The relationship between the shape and gender of a face, with particular application to automatic gender classification, has been the subject of significant research in recent years. Determining the gender of a face, especially when dealing with unseen examples, presents a major challenge. This is especially true for certain age groups, such as teenagers, due to their rapid development at this phase of life. This study proposes a new set of facial morphological descriptors,based on 3D geodesic path curvatures, and uses them for gender analysis. Their goal is to discern key facial areas related to gender, specifically suited to the task of gender classification. These new curvature-based features are extracted along the geodesic path between two biological landmarks located in key facial *** performance based on the new features is compared with that achieved using the Euclidean and geodesic distance measures traditionally used in gender analysis and classification. Five different experiments were conducted on a large teenage face database(4745 faces from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children) to investigate and justify the use of the proposed curvature features. Our experiments show that the combination of the new features with geodesic distances provides a classification accuracy of 89%. They also show that nose-related traits provide the most discriminative facial feature for gender classification, with the most discriminative features lying along the 3D face profile curve.
