Relationship between biological factors and catastrophizing and clinical outcomes for female patients with knee osteoarthritis

AIM To investigate the correlations between clinical outcomes and biopsychological variables in female patients with knee osteoarthritis(OA).METHODS Seventy-seven patients with symptomatic knee OA were enrolled in this *** investigated the age,body mass index(BMI),pain catastrophizing scale(PCS)and radiographic severity of bilateral knees using a Kellgren-Lawrence(K-L)grading system of the ***,a multiple linear regression was conducted to determine which variables best correlated with main outcomes of knee OA,which were pain severity,moving capacity by measuring timed-up-and-go test and Japanese Knee Osteoarthritis Measure(JKOM).RESULTS We found that the significant contributor to pain severity was PCS(β=0.555)and BMI(β=0.239),to moving capacity was K-L grade(β=0.520)and to PCS(β=0.313),and to a JKOM score was PCS(β=0.485)and K-L grade(β=0.421),*** The results suggest that pain catastrophizing as well as biological factors were associated with clinical outcomes in female patients with knee OA,irrespective of radiographic severity.

Psychological Preparation of Children for Medical Procedures: An Awareness Survey Targeting Nurses in Japan

Preparation is a means to support the psychological readiness and autonomy of children undergoing medical treatment. In this study, to understand the current practice and application of psychological preparation, using “explaining medical information to a child” as an indicator of respect for children’s rights, we investigated the effect of psychological preparation since 2002. The present study aimed to clarify the current status and awareness of psychological preparation for children undergoing medical procedures in pediatric nursing in Japan. An original questionnaire regarding psychological preparation for children in hospitals was sent by mail to nurses who were working in Japanese pediatric wards in 2010. Based on results from a previous study, nurses’ awareness of psychological preparation for children undergoing medical procedures seems to have improved. However, it was evident that nursing staff working in mixed wards require more specialized knowledge regarding child care, especially in terms of preparation. Furthermore, Japanese nurses recognized a need for improvement concerning their duties. It was also clear that the meaning of preparation remains ambiguous for many nurses. These results suggest that preparation has both psychological and ethical meanings.

Subunit Arrangement of a 2-Ketoisovalerate Ferredoxin Oxidoreductase from Thermococcus profundus Revealed by a Low Resolution X-Ray Analysis

2-ketoisovalerate ferredoxin oxidoreductase (VOR) is a key enzyme in hyperthermophiles catalyzing the coenzyme A-dependent oxidative decarboxylation of aliphatic amino acid-derived 2-keto acids. The enzyme purified under anaerobic conditions from a hyperthermophilic archaeon, Thermococcus profundus, is a hetero-octamer (αβγδ)2 consisting of four different subunits, α = 45 kDa, β = 31 kDa, γ = 22 kDa and δ = 13 kDa, respectively, and it has three [4Fe-4S] clusters per αβγδ-protomer, similar to other ferredoxin oxidoreductases. In the present study, the native enzyme was purified from this strain and crystallized to give rod-like crystals that were suitable for X-ray diffraction experiments. The crystals belonged to space group P41212, with unit-cell parameters a = b = 136.20 ?, c = 221.07 ?. Diffraction images were processed to a resolution of 3.0 ?. The data collected so far indicate the approximate molecular boundaries and a partial main-chain trace of the enzyme.

Centrilobular necrosis in acute presentation of Japanese patients with type 1 autoimmune hepatitis

AIM: To compare clinicopathological features of acute presentation of type 1 autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) with or without centrilobular necrosis (CN). METHODS: Our study comprised 41 patients with biopsy-proven acute presentation (acute exacerbation phase 36, acute hepatitis phase 5) of type 1 AIH at our hospital from 1975 to 2009. Elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (> 5x upper limit of normal) identified acute presentation of the disease. We compared clinicopathological features of these AIH patients with or without CN. The data used for analysis included patient background (age, sex, type of disease, presence of complications with other autoimmune diseases, human leukocyte antigen, and International Autoimmune Hepatitis Group score), clinical parameters at presentation (ALT, alkaline phosphatase, IgG, anti-nuclear antibodies, and anti-smooth muscle antibodies), histology and therapy. RESULTS: CN was found in 13 (31.7%) patients with acute presentation (acute exacerbation phase 10, acute hepatitis phase 3) of AIH. Serum IgG levels of patients with CN were significantly lower than those of patients without CN (mean: 2307 mg/dL vs 3126 mg/dL, P < 0.05), while antinuclear antibody-negative rates were significantly higher (30.7% vs 3.5%, P < 0.05). However, other clinical features were similar between the two groups. The frequency of advanced fibrosis in patients with CN was significantly lower than in patients without CN (F0-2: 84.6% vs 35.7%, F3-4: 15.4% vs 64.3%, P < 0.05). Other histological features were similar between the two groups. Although there was no significant difference between groups when evaluated using the revised original score (12 vs 14), the simplified AIH score of patients with CN was significantly lower (6 vs 7, P < 0.05). Frequency of DR4 was similar between patients with and without CN. CONCLUSION: CN is observed in both Japanese patients with acute hepatitis phase and acute exacerbation phase of type 1 AIH, although AIH with CN often

A Method for Determining <i>Batillaria attramentaria</i>Distribution Using Aerial Balloon Photography and a Vegetation Index Camera: Demonstration at the Yatsu Tidal Flat, Chiba Prefecture

Located in Chiba Prefecture, the Yatsu Tidal Flat is an important stopover for birds migrating between cold regions such as Siberia and warm regions such as Southeast Asia and Australia. Its importance led to its selection in 1993 as the first tidal flat in Japan to be registered under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat (the Ramsar Convention). However, the Yatsu Tidal Flat has in more recent years witnessed blooms of Ulva spp. (sea lettuce) and an increase in exotic species such as Batillaria attramentaria (Japanese mud snail) and Mercenaria mercenaria (hard clam), fueling concerns that the increasing spatial domination of the tidal flat by such species and competition with other species for food may drive a decline in the habitat’s self-cleaning capabilities. For this study, we focused on Batillaria attramentaria, which is now so widely distributed in the Yatsu Tidal Flat as to preclude reliable monitoring via aerial photographs or satellite imagery. Accordingly, we tested the utility of a simplified method for obtaining data on the distribution of Batillaria attramentaria by using aerial balloon photography and a vegetation index camera capable of generating NDVI data. Our results show that under certain conditions, this method can indeed be used to determine Batillaria attramentaria distribution.

Interspecific Crossing between Yam Species (Dioscorea rotundata and Dioscorea bulbifera) through in Vitro Ovule Culture

In the present study, in vitro ovule culture technique was used to obtain interspecific cross combination of Dioscorea rotundata ufenyi and Dioscorea bulbifera wild. Ten days after pollination, ovules were excised and cultured onto 1/2 strength Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium (Basal salt mixture + Vitamins) supplemented with 6% sucrose, 0.7% agar and plant growth hormones such as GA3, BAP, Picrolam and TDZ. Cultured ovules were transferred on 1/2 MS medium with 3% sucrose and 0.7% agar after three weeks. 40 days after pollination, germination was observed from 7 months cultured ovule between D. rotundata ufenyi x D. bulbifera wild. Hybridity of the regenerated plant was checked by flow cytometric method. A close relation was observed between the fluorescence intensity of the obtained progeny with one of the parents’ fluorescence. The observed progeny can be closely correlated with an apomictic tissue from an ovule parent of D. rotundata ufenyi. Plantlets derived from ovule culture were proliferated through in vitro shoot multiplication with hormonal concentration (0.5 mg/l BAP) supplemented with 1/2 strength MS medium. Obtained ovule culture derived in vitro plantlets were successfully hardened, acclimatized and transferred to the field, where they survived and grew normally. In plant breeding, interspecific crossing is very important technique, enabling the time needed to produce homozygous lines to be shortened as compared to the conventional plant breeding techniques.

Functional expression of a proliferation-related ligand in hepatocellular carcinoma and its implications for neovascularization

AIM： To detect the expression of a proliferation-related ligand on human hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） cell lines （SK-Hepl, HLE and HepG2） and in culture medium. METHODS： APRIL expression was analyzed by Western blotting in HCC cell lines. Effects of APRIL to cell count and angiogenesis were analyzed, too. RESULTS： Recombinant human APRIL （rhAPRIL） increased cell viability of HepG2 cells and, in HUVEC, rhAPRIL provided slight tolerance to cell death from serum starvation. Soluble APRIL （sAPRIL） from HLE cells increased after serum starvation, but did not change in SK-Hepl or HepG2 cells. These cells showed down-regulation of VEGF after incubation with anti-APRIL antibody. Furthermore, culture medium from the HCC cells treated with anti-APRIL antibody treatment inhibited tube formation of HUVECs. CONCLUSION： Functional expression of APRIL might contribute to neovascularization via an upregulation of VEGF in HCC.

BACKGROUND Emergency pancreaticoduodenectomy(EPD)is a rare event for complex periam-pullary *** intraoperative blood loss is correlated with poor post-operative *** SUMMARY Two patients underwent EPD using a no-touch isolation technique,in which all arteries supplying the pancreatic head region were ligated and divided before manipulation of the pancreatic head and *** operative times were 220 and 239 min,and the blood loss was 70 and 270 g,*** patients were discharged on the 14^(th) and 10^(th) postoperative day,***-two patients underwent EPD for the treatment of neoplastic *** mean operative time was 361.6 min,and the mean blood loss was 747.3 *** comp-lication rate was 37.5%.The in-hospital mortality rate was 9.38%.CONCLUSION The no-touch isolation technique is feasible,safe,and effective for reducing intraoperative blood loss in EPD.
