BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the relative efficacies of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DES) and bare-metal stents (BMS) in elderly patients。 The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome for geriatric patients who received either DES or BMS。 METHODS: From January 2002 to October 2005, 199 consecutive Chinese geriatric patients (≥ 75 years old) underwent PCI with coronary DES or BMS implantation at our institution。 We analyzed the major clinical end points that included all-cause mortality, cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, target lesion revascularization (TLR), stent thrombosis, and bleeding complications。 RESULTS: The three-year cumulative rates of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular death, and myocardial infarction were significantly lower in the DES group (6.3%,3.6%,5.4%) compared with the BMS group (16.2%,11.5%,14.9%; P <0.05)。 No significant differences were found in the three-year cumulative rate for target lesion revascularization (6.3% vs4.6%, P =0.61) or stent thrombosis (3.6% vs2.3%, P =0.70)。 Likewise, there were no statistically significant differences in the cumulative rate for intracranial hemorrhage, or major and minor hemorrhage at three years。 CONCLUSIONS: DES-based PCI was associated with a significant reduction in the three-year cumulative rate of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular death, and myocardial infarction compared with BMS, without increased risk of TLR, stent thrombosis, or bleeding complications at three years in this group of Chinese geriatric patients。

The efficacy of pelvic radiation in the management of locally advanced stage rectal cancer has come under scrutiny in the context of modern precision medicine and systemic therapy as evidenced by recent clinical trials such as FOWARC(J Clin Oncol 2019;37:3223-3233),NCT04165772(N Engl J Med 2022;386:2363-2376),and PROSPECT(N Engl J Med 2023;389:322-334).In this review,we comprehensively assess these pivotal trials and offer additional insights into the evolving role of pelvic radiation in contemporary oncology.

Effects of Serum Concentration, Synchronization Time and Confluence on the Cell-Cycle Synchronization Efficiency of Goat Fibroblasts

This study aims to evaluate the effect of serum concentration, synchronization time, and confluence degree on the synchronisation efficiency of goat fibroblast cycle. The results indicated that there was no difference in the percentage of nucleated fibroblasts in the G0/G1 stage between serum concentrations of 0.3% and 0.4% (83.89% and 82.69%, respectively, P > 0.05) as well as between serum concentrations of 0.2% and 0.5% (76.95% and 75.46%, respectively, P > 0.05). The percentage of nucleated fibroblasts in the G0/G1 stage was highest at the concentration of 0.3% and lowest in the control group (83.89% vs. 62.67%, P 0.05). The beneficial effect of high confluence was confirmed by the large percentage of nucleated fibroblasts at the G0/G1 stage. The 60% confluency was significantly lower than the 80% and 100% confluency (73.44%, 86.63%, and 87.17%, respectively, P < 0.05). The results indicate that the goat fibroblast cycle synchronization is the most effective at the serum concentration of 0.3%, 72 hours of synchronization and 100% confluency.

Sewage discharge could be a major source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） in the coastal waters. Stonecutters Island and Shatin Sewage Treatment Works （SCISTW and STSTW） in Hong Kong, adopted chemically enhanced primary treatment and biological treatment, respectively. This study aimed at （1） determining the removal efficiencies of PAHs, （2） comparing the capabilities in removing PAHs, and （3） characterizing the profile of each individual PAHs, in the two sewage treatment plants （STPs）. Quantification of 16 PAHs was conducted by a Gas Chromatography. The concentrations of total PAHs decreased gradually along the treatment processes （from 301 ± 255 and 307 ± 217 ns/L to 14.9 ± 12.1 and 63.3 ± 54.1 ng/L in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively）. It was noted that STSTW was more capable in removing total PAHs than SCISTW with average total removal effidency 94.4% ± 4.12% us. 79.2% ± 7.48% （p 〈 0.05）. The removal of PAHs was probably due to sorption in particular matter, confirmed by the higher distribution coefficient of individual and total PAHs in solid samples （dewatered sludge contained 92.5% and 74.7% of total PAHs in SCISTW and STSTW, respectively） than liquid samples （final efffluent-total contained 7.53% and 25.3% of total PAHs in STSTW and SCISTW, respectively）. Despite the impressive capability of STSTW and SCISTW in removing PAHs, there was still a considerable amount of total PAHs （1.85 and 39.3 ks/year, respectively for the two STPs） being discharged into Hone Kon coastal waters, which would be an environmental concern.

Dear Editor,Coronavirus Disease 2019(COVID-19)is associated with a variety of neurological complications,including encephalopathy,encephalitis,dementia,and others.1 The pathogenic mechanism of these neurological manifestations remains incompletely understood but may be due to factors such as coagulation problem,immune-mediated response,or direct viral invasion into the central nervous system(CNS).2 We and others previously reported that ancestral SARS-CoV-2 could infect and replicate in human brain organoids.3,4 More recently,SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.1 emerged in late 2021 and demonstrated altered virological features including increased immunoevasion and attenuated pathogenicity comparing to SARS-CoV-2 wildtype(WT)and previous variants.5 However,the neuroinvasiveness of Omicron sublineages remain ***,we investigated the neuroinvasion and neurotoxicity of Omicron BA.1 and BA.2,and compared the findings with those of SARS-CoV-2 WT and Delta in human forebrain and midbrain *** results demonstrated that BA.2 replicated more efficiently while triggered lower levels of type I interferon response than that of SARS-CoV-2 WT,Delta,and BA.1 in both human forebrain and midbrain *** addition,BA.2 triggered substantially higher levels of apoptosis in the infected human forebrain and midbrain ***,these findings suggest that BA.2 may be different from SARS-CoV-2 WT and previous variants in its capacity in targeting and causing diseases in the human brain.

In this study,we developed a novel optical-flow algorithm for determining the wall shear-stress on the surface of *** algorithm solves the thin-oil-film equation using a numerical scheme that recovers local features neglected by smoothing filters.A variational formulation with a smoothness constraint was applied to extract the global shear-stress *** algorithm was then applied to scalar images generated using direct numerical simulation(DNS)method,which revealed that the errors were smaller than those of conventional *** application of the proposed algorithm to recover the wall shear-stress on a low-aspect-ratio wing and on an axisymmetric boattail model taken as examples in this study showed a strong potential for analysing shear-stress *** to the methods used in previous studies,proposed method reveals more local features of separation line and singular points on object surface.
