Sodium alginate and carboxymethyl chitosan have been extensively applied in tissue engineering and other relative fields due to their low price and excellent biocompatibility. In this paper, we oxidized sodium alginate with sodium periodate to convert 1,2-hydroxyl groups into aldehyde groups to get aldehyde-sodium alginate （A- SA）. Carboxymethyl chitosan was modified with ethylenediamine （ED） in the presence of water-soluble N-（3-Dimethylaminopropyl）-N＇-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride （EDC） to introduce additional amino groups to get amino-carboxymethyl chitosan （A-CS）. Upon mixing the A-SA and A-CS aqueous solutions together, a gel rapidly formed based on the Schiff＇s base reaction between aldehyde groups in A-SA and amino groups in A-CS. FTIR analysis confirmed the characteristic peak of Schiff＇s base group in the hydrogel. It was confirmed that the gelation time be dependent on the aldehyde group content in A-SA and amino group content in A-CS. The fasted hydrogel formation takes place within 10 min. The data of bonding strength and cytotoxicity measurement also showed that the hydrogel had good adhesion and biocompatibility. All these results support that this gel has the potential as soft tissue adhesive.

Globular fossils from Doushantuo phosphorites at the weng’an area are for the first time identified as a gas-trulation stage of phosphatized embryos. They are got from the fossiliferous remains after acetic acid maceration. The fossils are found together with formerly reported animal resting eggs and embryos of the earlier cleavage stage. The oblate-shaped fossils with the same size as those reported embryos and invaginate at the middle part into the embryos, show the characteristics of the late blastula to the early gas-trula stage of the embryo development. This discovery convinces the existence of animal embryos at Doushantuo age and offers new facts for the studying of the affinity of related fossils, which are still controversial at present.

Liver fibrosis is a wound-healing response to chronic injuries, characterized by the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix or scar tissue within the liver;in addition, its formation is associated with multiple cytokines as well as several cell types and a variety of signaling pathways. When liver fibrosis is not well controlled, it can progress to liver cirrhosis, but it is reversible in principle. Thus far, no efficient therapy is available for treatment of liver fibrosis. Although liver transplantation is the preferred strategy, there are many challenges remaining in this approach, such as shortage of donor organs, immunological rejection, and surgical complications. Hence, there is a great need for an alternative therapeutic strategy. Currently, mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy is considered a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of liver fibrosis;advantageously, the characteristics of MSCs are continuous self-renewal, proliferation, multipotent differentiation, and immunomodulatory activities. The human umbilical cord-derived (hUC)-MSCs possess not only the common attributes of MSCs but also more stable biological characteristics, relatively easy accessibility, abundant source, and no ethical issues (e.g., bone marrow being the adult source), making hUC-MSCs a good choice for treatment of liver fibrosis. In this review, we summarize the biological characteristics of hUC-MSCs and their paracrine effects, exerted by secretion of various cytokines, which ultimately promote liver repair through several signaling pathways. Additionally, we discuss the capacity of hUC-MSCs to differentiate into hepatocyte-like cells for compensating the function of existing hepatocytes, which may aid in amelioration of liver fibrosis. Finally, we discuss the current status of the research field and its future prospects.

Study on alkali mechanical activation for recovering rare earth from waste fluorescent lamps

Recycling of rare earth from waste fluorescent lamps is becoming increasingly important in future sustainable development. However, cerium and terbium are usually difficult to recover due to the stable spinel structure. In the research, alkali mechanical activation was innovatively used to pretreat the waste phosphors for recovering rare earths. The effect of alkali mechanical activation on the structural changes of waste phosphors was explored using X-ray diffraction （XRD） and Fourier transform infrared spec- troscopy （FFIR）. Meanwhile, the effects of different parameters including milling speed, activation time, and amount of alkali on the leaching rates of rare earth were investigated. The rare earth elements re- covery rates are observed to increase rapidly, particularly with increases in rotational speed and acti- vation time. Under optimal conditions, the maximum leaching rates of Ce and Tb reach 85.0% and 89.8%, respectively. And the total recovery rates of rare earth reach 95.2%. All the results indicate that alkali mechanical activation can effectively destroy the spinel structure and produce substantial physico- chemical changes. These changes lead to the easy dissolution of rare earths in acid solution, and greatly improve the leaching of cerium and terbium.

Proteomic analysis of trans-hemispheric motor cortex reorganization following contralateral C7 nerve transfer

Nerve transfer is the most common treatment for total brachial plexus avulsion injury. After nerve transfer, the movement of the injured limb may be activated by certain movements of the healthy limb at the early stage of recovery, i.e., trans-hemispheric reorganization. Pre- vious studies have focused on functional magnetic resonance imaging and changes in brain-derived neurotrophic factor and growth asso- ciated protein 43, but there have been no proteomics studies. In this study, we designed a rat model of total brachial plexus avulsion injury involving contralateral C7 nerve transfer. Isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation and western blot assay were then used to screen differentially expressed proteins in bilateral motor cortices. We found that most differentially expressed proteins in both cortices of upper limb were associated with nervous system development and function （including neuron differentiation and development, axonogenesis, and guidance）, microtubule and cytoskeleton organization, synapse plasticity, and transmission of nerve impulses. Two key differentially expressed proteins, neurofilament light （NFL） and Thy-1, were identified. In contralateral cortex, the NFL level was upregulated 2 weeks after transfer and downregulated at 1 and 5 months. The Thy-1 level was upregulated from 1 to 5 months. In the affected cortex, the NFL level increased gradually from 1 to 5 months. Western blot results of key differentially expressed proteins were consistent with the proteom- ic findings. These results indicate that NFL and Thy-1 play an important role in trans-hemispheric organization following total brachial plexus root avulsion and contralateral C7 nerve transfer.

Plants are known to possess plenty of pharmacological activities as a result of various phytoconstituents. Tetramethylpyrazine(TMP), one of the most widely used medicinal compound isolated from traditional Chinese herb, is usually employed for anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-platelet aggregation, antilipid, anti-fibrosis, as well as activating blood, removing stasis, dilating small arteries, improving microcirculation and antagonizing calcium. In the present paper, the anti-adhesion effect of TMP were reviewed. TMP was found to play a multi-target and muti-link role in anti-adhesion by inhibiting hyperplasia of collagen and overexpression of adhesion-related factors and reducing the concentration of white blood cells and fibrin in plasma. Because previous studies mostly focused on in vitro experiments and animal experiments, there is an urgent need for clinical research with abundant indicators to further prove its anti-adhesion potency. Future basic research should concentrate on the development of TMP as a biological material.

Risk analysis for a cascade reservoir system using the brittle risk entropy method

The principal means of conserving water and utilizing hydropower in China is to exploit the use of a series of reservoirs in a cascade. This method and its inherent engineering safety problems are receiving increasing attention nowadays. In the field of engineering safety analysis, much work has focused on single reservoir projects in the past few years, but there is little research available on the safety risk analysis of cascade reservoirs, either within China or internationally. Therefore, a framework for risk analysis on the cascade reservoir system based on the theory of system engineering is constructed in this article. A cascading failure model is established and the connection degree factor discussed. In addition, the importance degree of the subsystem, which can be calculated by combining the analytical hierarchy process and the entropy weight method, is explained. According to brittleness theory of a complex system, brittle risk entropy is proposed as a performance index for measuring the collapse uncertainty of the cascade reservoir system. In addition, the brittle risk of the cascade reservoir system is predicted, which provides a reference for safety analysis in water conservation and hydropower construction projects in China.

Partial substitution of chemical fertilizers by organic amendments is adopted widely for promoting the availability of soil phosphorus(P)in agricultural ***,few studies have comprehensively evaluated the effects of longterm organic substitution on soil P availability and microbial activity in greenhouse vegetable fields.A 10-year(2009–2019)field experiment was carried out to investigate the impacts of organic fertilizer substitution on soil P pools,phosphatase activities and the microbial community,and identify factors that regulate these soil P transformation *** treatments included 100%chemical N fertilizer(4 CN),50%substitution of chemical N by manure(2 CN+2 MN),straw(2 CN+2 SN),and combined manure with straw(2 CN+1 MN+1 SN).Compared with the 4 CN treatment,organic substitution treatments increased celery and tomato yields by 6.9-13.8%and 8.6-18.1%,respectively,with the highest yields being in the 2 CN+1 MN+1 SN *** 10 years of fertilization,organic substitution treatments reduced total P and inorganic P accumulation,increased the concentrations of available P,organic P,and microbial biomass P,and promoted phosphatase activities(alkaline and acid phosphomonoesterase,phosphodiesterase,and phytase)and microbial growth in comparison with the 4 CN ***,organic substitution treatments significantly increased soil C/P,and the partial least squares path model(PLS-PM)revealed that the soil C/P ratio directly and significantly affected phosphatase activities and the microbial biomass and positively influenced soil P pools and vegetable *** least squares(PLS)regression demonstrated that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi positively affected phosphatase *** results suggest that organic fertilizer substitution can promote soil P transformation and *** manure with straw was more effective than applying these materials separately for developing sustainable P management practices.

Preparation of high acidity coefficient slag wool fiber with blast furnace slag and modifying agents

Preparation of high acidity coefficient slag wool fiber with molten slag and modifying agents is considered to be a positive approach for value-added utilization of blast furnace slag. In order to achieve the multi-purposes of fiber-forming, energy saving, and waste heat recovery, the modifying agents that can improve the acidity coefficient of slag effectively, economically, and environmentally were investigated. Three agents with different acidity coefficients were adopted to modify slag and manufacture wool fibers. The effect of agent and slag proportion on the melting temperature and viscosity of molten slag was studied at a fixed acidity coefficient of 1.8 and 2.0. The results indicate that the sample modified with high acidity coefficient agent and high slag proportion has lower melting temperature and viscosity. The effect of agent and slag temperature on the fiber diameter was also investigated when the acidity coefficient of slag is 2.0. At a fixed slag proportion of 50 wt.%, the mean diameter decreases with increasing temperature and decreasing viscosity coefficient. Besides, the temperature drops caused by the addition of agents and energy consumption of samples for heating the slag were also analyzed.
